I literally just said out loud "Thank you lady" lol. I am so excited to begin tatting. Your explanation was to the point without being condescending. Loved it!
I'm just picking up tatting again after a long hiatus, and while transferring the knot came back to me easily, I couldn't remember how to handle the thread and shuttles efficiently. I was struggling all over the place, each knot a chore, until I found your video, and now the two halves of the stitches are coming along "zip-zip!" again. Thank you!
I have tried tatting off and on over the last 20 years. This is the first time it is making sense in my head because you explained the flipping of the knot. Thank you so much!
I've found this video after 2 years and I still think you've done an awesome job of explaining especially about transferring the knot. Thank you again and again.
As everyone else said, this made my brain click 😂 thank you so much! I kept watching these videos and hearing 'flip the knot' and no amount of watching and rewatching of other videos was doing the trick. You explained it so well!
Phenomenal explanation! Thank you so much! This was the first video where I could see everything clearly and understand how it all worked. I was finally able to do the double stitch!
Your explanation of the knot transferring and going slowly so I can keep track of what you are doing makes this a wonderful video. I could never follow what was being done before. Thank you.
I found this gadget (which I now know is a shuttle) at a secondhand store. I collect little odd items. I found out what it was and decided to see how it works. Having never done anything even remotely close to this, I used your video and was able to make 6 stitches. They're certainly not the best, but I did it. Thank you so much for your instructions!!! Now I have a new rabbit hole to go down. ☺️
This is one of the best beginner shuttle tatting videos I've ever seen. I love the large cord. When I learned to shuttle tat I actually used a large cord so I could see and study the mechanics of the technique and learn what was happening. Your instructions are so clear and you move slow enough that people can actually see what is happening. I also love that your work surface is so clean and clear because it allows people to concentrate on what you are doing without being distracted with a lot of stuff in the background. Thank you for sharing. :)
Thanks so much. Bought a supposedly Easy Tatting book, which spent a couple of hours trying to make sense of,so then found your instructions and it took a couple of minutes to understand
I learned to tat in 2009 and have been teaching for over 12 years. Teaching student to "flip the knot" has always been challenging. Transferring the knot is an excellent way to describe what is being done. I will be using that terminology in my future classes.
This is the absolute best instruction I have ever seen on RUclips. This woman is very patient and instructs as if you were there. Keep up the good work.
I just want to say thank you for using the cord to show how to tat. It is much easier to see how to do it. Thank you also for showing and explaining it so well. Great video!
It was much clearer for me to see, how I'm supposed to hold the thread AND the shuttle. The thick thread also made it visually clearer to me, how the thread is supposed to move over and under the hands, fingers and thread. Thank you very much!
This is so extremely helpful!! I can't thank you enough. The bigger thread and shuttle, along with your clear instruction, make it so much easier to understand.
You make it look so easy thank you. My step mother made and got ribbons at fairs for her work. I never knew her, but I now have some of her beautiful work and her equipment, now I can learn to use it. Thank you.
Good morning! I dug out my tatting shuttle, determined to have another go and found your series of tutorials. Thank you so much. Not only is this the best set of tutorials I have found but you have also inspired me to think about tatting using thicker coard for a more modern approach.
This is the absolute best lesson I have seen that shows not only how to do it but why. Others are clearing but you, you have it so well put and without a ton of excess talking causing me to get confused. Thank you so much!
I learned this from a book when I was about 12, and I had to make a shuttle, and it’s been years since I did this. But you explained this so clearly, I’m 50 now, but I think I will have another go, as it has come flooding back!
Thank you for your comment Nathaniel, I hope you pick it up again - I'm sure you'll enjoy it. And there is so much help available on internet nowadays. Happy tatting! :-)

Excellent tutorial! I have decided that the shuttle is easier than the needle method. Just waiting for my shuttle to arrive. Your explanation is so clear, thank you.
Hello Sue, glad you think so. I think maybe the learning curve with the shuttle is a bit steeper to start with but personally (and I know there are lots of needle tatting lovers out there!) Hello Terry, thank you so much for your lovely message, I'm always delighted to hear when my videos have helped. Yes, I have several more videos on my channel so I hope you find others (maybe in the beginners series?) that you will find useful too. :-)
This was a revelation. After watching a million other videos I still couldn't get it right, bu thiw was the best explanation and demo I've seen. Thank you so much!!
First time in years (if not my whole life) that I'm commenting on a RUclips video. Just want to say thank you! I've been trying to learn for days and finally found you video and now everything is going so much better!
Amazing! I have tried other videos and would leave frustrated with a tangled mess. After 2 months of not touching my shuttle and unsuccessfully looking for a physical tatting class to go to, I thought I'd give it one last try- found your video this morning and have successfully been able to follow with you! Thank you thank you! Renewed hope :)
Wonderful Elizabeth! Such a nice message to read this morning. I know there are lots of videos out there and sometimes it's just a matter of finding the one that suits you and hopefully it will click. If my video's helped you get started with tatting, then I'm happy!
This is literally the first one of these videos that I've watched that finally made sense!! Thank you so much! All of the other ones that I've watched haven't been able to explain exactly what "transfer the loop" meant. This made it so much easier to understand because I could finally actually see what was happening and you slowed it down and backed it up so I could see it undo and redo as well.
3 days Ive been struggling .....Im left handed so that doesnt help but one watch of this and Ive done it...... I am thrilled. I love you completely and utterly.
Hello! It's lovely to hear! So glad my video helped. I've been thinking of making a left-handed video (although I'm not left-handed). I hope all continues to go well for you with tatting. :-)
BRILLIANT dmonstration. Thank you. Years ago I tried to learn from a pattern booklet but really could not understand the technique. You have made it very clear.
I am relearning shuttle tatting after many years away from it. This is a fantastic tutorial as you have made it very easy to see everything. Thank you!
Brilliant! You could also make a video with a chain and two colors when ch would show the transfer. This is GREAT because it shows so clearly why the knot must move and it explains the ring too. Wonderfully done!
I have had such a hard time getting this as I couldn't get my knots right so that I could get my first rings to close. My thread would just lock and I couldn't slide the knots to close make a ring. I watched video after video and I finally found yours. I can finally slide the knots and close a ring. I can finally learn tatting now that I can do the knots properly. Thank you!!
I just ordered a vintage book with knitting, crochet, and tatting instructions from the 1950's. I can't wait to get my book and shuttle and get started.
Wow! Tried this decades ago with a paper tutorial before youtube, and kept making the knots on the hand cord instead of flipping the knot and putting it on the shuttle cord...I just couldn't understand how the shuttle cord was free to be pulled to close the circle!! This evening I found your tutorial and slowed it down....AHA moment....wow....so pleased I've finally understood it....and it's still like magic how the knot flops😂now I can finally make some lace!!!thank you so much!!!!💓
Hi Jeanne, thank you so much for your comment as I'm always happy when someone tells me a video of mine helped them get a lightbulb moment! I wish you all the best in keeping to make progress with tatting.
Such a good demo of the method, thank you. I cannot even fathom the 215 people who gave it a thumbs down. Maybe they are the ones with the really bad instructional videos that have deeply frustrated most of us wanting to learn this craft. Again, thank you.
Thank you so much for your comment Rita! I must admit I used to get upset in the beginning when I saw "thumbs down"s on my videos but now I choose to concentrate on all the lovely comments I get instead... such as yours! :-)
This video is so helpful!!! I’m new to shuttle tatting and this video made all the difference - I’m shuttle tatting now!! Thank you - still trying to make my stitches consistent but I’m doing it!
That’s a great explanation. Thank you so much. I have been needle tatting because I thought using a shuttle was so much harder. I’m anxious to try the shuttle now!😊
Fantastic video, thank you for sharing this. It's the best explanation I have found. I couldn't work out what both threads were doing and how to get the knot to flip, I was getting really frustrated trying to work out where I was going wrong, but your explanation made it so quick and easy to understand, and now it's clicked! I'm looking forward to learning tatting, such a beautiful craft!
This is the best video that I have ever seen to show the double stitch with a shuttle. I still cannot do shuttle tatting but this video may help. I at least understand the process now. The other videos that I had watched were too far away and the tatter was going too fast. Thank you so much for this video. I am going to give this another try!
Hi Cheryl, thank you for your comment. I really hope you'll be able to shuttle tat soon and I'm very glad to hear you found the video helpful. Good luck!
Very clear. I didn't really need the technique, but I have this monster Tatsy shuttle, and wanted to see how someone managed such a big shuttle. Thanks!
You give wonderful instructions and slow enough to see exactly what you are doing. I tried shuttle tatting, really wanted to do that. Every time I tried to make a ring, it would not move. I finally gave up afted about 100 times of trying. I started needle tatting. It was much easier. At least I was able to.make the rings and chains. Thank you for the instruction. I will try shuttle again.
Hi Cathy, I really hope you will be successful when you try the shuttle again! Don't give up, once you figure out the "flip" (transferring the knot), you'll be away! :-)
Thanks so much, I watched many other videos before finding this one and for the first time I could clearly understand what this flip of the knot means! Thanks so much, so clear and well explained!!! I'll follow you in the following tutorials now, happy I found you ❤❤❤ thanks so much for the clear explications, absolutely the best video to understand double stitch with a shuttle ❤❤❤
This is brilliant -- a friend asked me to teach her how to tat & now I can!!! We'll watch this demo -- it is exactly how I tat -- thank you! ps I've tatted for so long, I've forgotten how to be a beginner! -- this will help me teach!
Thank you for teaching without the burden of two separate threads. I was taught this method by a lifelong tatter years ago. When I recently purchased a DVD of instructions to brush up my skills, the method using a shuttle thread and a ball thread was giving me fits. I couldn't put my finger on why (how pun-ny) until I came across your video. Trying to keep tension this way is SO much easier. Perhaps later I'll find there are advantages to having a ball thread to contend with, but right now the only advantage I can think of would be needing less thread on the shuttle and thus fewer rewinds. My speed and stitch consistency will increase rapidly with your method, which will help me keep at it. I look forward to seeing more of your instruction... and THANK YOU AUNT RUTHIE for taking time out of your busy NS life to show your grateful US niece how to tie a knot.
Thank you for your comment and as always, I'm very glad if you found this helpful. This was my first time doing a demo video with a larger shuttle and thick cord, hoping this would make things clearer. There are many many designs that require only one shuttle so there is no need to tackle shuttle and ball or two shuttles until you are ready to tat more complex designs. Good luck, I hope you keep making progress!
Oh my goodness you are amazing! I have tatted before but I have been strugging for a long time to figure it out again so I can make some lace. Thank you !!
This is the best video that I have seen to help new tatters learn the knot transfer. I have taught tatting and it is hard to get this point across, even with a visual, but your explanation is right on the spot. Thanks for making this.
Lady, Thank You!!!!! I watched about 4 videos on starting off tatting. You taking the time to explained and illustrated it so well. I finally get how to transfer the knot to it's on the knot chord vs the suddle chord which I was struggling with.
Thank you. You are the first person to tell me how to hold the shuttle in relation to how it is wound! I have watched many videos on how to transfer the knot without success. Now I just pull until the shuttle thread straightens completely and I know it has happened. I have been needle tatting for ages but just could not transfer the knot when trying to shuttle tat.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Took a class 11 y ago. Have depth perception issue atop instructor explaining the SAME way, over and over again. Switching the knot over explanation Much Clearer for me, thank you BUNCHS!
Thnd so much because some people do it too fast or use suck small string i couldn't tell what they were doing. I think most people that make tatting vids forget what's it like to start from the beginning... This was much more helpful
You're welcome! Thanks to internet nowadays though, it's easy for the tatting community to stay in touch with others around the world... and it makes it feel a bit less like a "lost art". :-)
Thank you so much! The large cord and your explanation really helped. I wasn't getting why my stitches were upside down and I couldn't grasp the concept of flipping the knot until now. Thank you again!
This is the best explanation I ever seen I have been trying to get this .I even went to class and didn’t get it I teach my self needle tatting but my dream is to learn this you explained it very well God bless you thank you very much

BRILLIANT dmonstration. Thank you. Years ago I tried to learn from a pattern booklet but really could not understand the technique. You have made it very clear.
You are welcome! Very glad if you are finding it helpful.
I am relearning shuttle tatting after many years away from it. This is a fantastic tutorial as you have made it very easy to see everything. Thank you!
You're very welcome! I'm glad it was helpful and nice to know you're picking up tatting again. :-)
Thanks for this! I've watched several videos to get a hang of tatting and this one was definitely the clearest one! Great!
Thank you very much, I'm very glad it my video was useful.
Brilliant! You could also make a video with a chain and two colors when ch would show the transfer. This is GREAT because it shows so clearly why the knot must move and it explains the ring too. Wonderfully done!
Thank you so much Michelle! Good idea about the two colours for a future video.
Been trying to learn tatting for 8 years on and off. Finally got it thanks to this really clear tutorial. Thank you so much!
You're so welcome! Very glad you found the video helpful in getting you started to tat! :-)
I was getting so frustrated trying to figure out how to flip it and this made everything click! So excited to embark on this journey thanks to you!!!
I'm so glad! Always lovely to hear my videos have helped. :-)
I've been struggling with this for a while - now I see where I've been going wrong! Thank you for such a clear explanation 😀. X
My pleasure, thank you for your comment. :-)
Omg thank you so much for making this video!!! This is by far THE best shuttle tatting introduction I’ve ever seen!!
Thank you so much! Glad it's helpful! :-)
Thank you!!
Wonderful! Always lovely to read comments like yours. :-)
Best explanation I have come across so far! Thank you! I was getting really frustrated and you made it easy to understand.
Glad it helped! Thank you Vickie!
You are the very best tatting teacher ever!!!! Amazing how understandable you make learning this beautiful craft!!! Thank you so much!
What a lovely comment! Thank you very much and I'm pleased if you found my video helpful. :-)
I just ordered a vintage book with knitting, crochet, and tatting instructions from the 1950's. I can't wait to get my book and shuttle and get started.
Wonderful! I hope you enjoy learning to tat! :-)
This was the clearest demonstration I have ever seen Thank you.
Thank you so much! :-)
Wonderful! Very glad you are making progress (and sorry I had not replied before, I seem to have missed comments somehow).
Thank you a lot, Frivole, because in all the explanations that I read, I never found this so clear !
Merci Marie-Hélène! I'm glad if this video helped you. :-)
That’s a great explanation. Thank you so much. I have been needle tatting because I thought using a shuttle was so much harder. I’m anxious to try the shuttle now!😊
Glad it was helpful! I hope it goes well when you do try the shuttle. :-)
So very glad to hear it! Always a pleasure to read messages like yours! Happy tatting!
Nice clear explanation and done at a slow speed so the brain can keep up. Thank you and well done as the penny has now dropped. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Wendy, thank you for your comment. I'm always glad to hear when my videos helped someone along! :-)
Good luck!
You did an amazing job of showing how to do the ring. Thanks so much!❤️
You're very welcome! Thank you for your comment. :-)
Oh, this is wonderful. I finally understood the mechanics behind it. Now there just remains practice, practice, practice! Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful! Good luck with it Alva! :-)
Just starting out and have tried other videos, was getting frustrated until I came to yours! Thank you I am on my way thanks to you!
I'm very pleased if my video helped! Thank you for your comment. :-)
Very clear. I didn't really need the technique, but I have this monster Tatsy shuttle, and wanted to see how someone managed such a big shuttle. Thanks!
You're welcome! It is rather large but still manageable though it slows down tatting quite a bit. :-)
the best explanat!ion ever. I´ve seen a lot but you´re the only one that explains how to tranfer the knot. Congrats!!!!
Thank you very much Marcela! :-)
Thank you very much for your video, I understood the concept of transferring the knot only after watching this video. Thank you very much once again.
You're very welcome! I'm so glad it was helpful! :-)
AWESON , REALLY GOOD. !!! You are a perfect Teácher, clear, no selfish, you share your knowledge with other .God bless you!
Thank you very much Martha! :-)
Thank you so much for your lovely comment Barbara! I hope you'll now be well on your way to becoming a proficient tatter. :-)
One of the best and clear explanations vids I found on utube. Very excited to try tatting and happy to find ur vids here. Thank you so much
Awesome, thank you!
This is brilliant -- a friend asked me to teach her how to tat & now I can!!! We'll watch this demo -- it is exactly how I tat -- thank you! ps I've tatted for so long, I've forgotten how to be a beginner! -- this will help me teach!
That's great! Very glad my video will be useful to you both! :-)
Nice, easy to understand. I actually think I could do it because of your in depth explanation. Thanks!
You're very welcome! Thank you for your comment. :-)
Most helpful video I’ve watched while trying to learn. Thank you.
Great to hear! Thank you. :-)
You are so welcome! I really hope you'll be happily tatting away again soon. :-)
This is the best video that I have seen to help new tatters learn the knot transfer. I have taught tatting and it is hard to get this point across, even with a visual, but your explanation is right on the spot. Thanks for making this.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment Nancy, it's always nice to know when something is particularly useful. :-)
Lady, Thank You!!!!!
I watched about 4 videos on starting off tatting. You taking the time to explained and illustrated it so well. I finally get how to transfer the knot to it's on the knot chord vs the suddle chord which I was struggling with.
You are so welcome! I'm very glad my video helped and thank you for your comment.
Hi Elizabeth, very glad my video was useful in helping you get started with shuttle tatting! Thank you for your comment. :-)
My mother tatted and I could never learn but this gives me hope. Maybe at 78 I can learn. Thank you. Very clear on instructions.
It's never too late Ruth! I hope you will pick up your shuttles and have a go. :-)
Thanks for doing this with large easy to see thread and shuttle. I’m still learning this was very helpful, thank you!
Glad it was helpful! :-)
Been trying for 2 days but now I finally can get the stitches on the shuttle cord. I'm away!! Thank you for sharing.
Very glad I could help! :-)
Thank you for explaining where each loop is supposed to be in each stage of the stitch. That’s the piece I was missing.
Great, very glad if you found it helpful! :-)
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Took a class 11 y ago. Have depth perception issue atop instructor explaining the SAME way, over and over again. Switching the knot over explanation Much Clearer for me, thank you BUNCHS!
You're very welcome! I'm glad you found the video useful. :-)
I now load my shuttle properly and it’s working! So happy.
Very glad it helped! :-)
Thnd so much because some people do it too fast or use suck small string i couldn't tell what they were doing. I think most people that make tatting vids forget what's it like to start from the beginning... This was much more helpful
Thank you very much, glad you found it helpful.
I loved to watch my Grandmother Tat it always amazed me. Almost a lost art now. Thank you.
Wonderful! It always makes me happy when it clicks for people! :-)
This is the best explanation I ever seen I have been trying to get this .I even went to class and didn’t get it I teach my self needle tatting but my dream is to learn this you explained it very well God bless you thank you very much
Thank you for your message Zizi, I really hope you're next attempt will be successful and that you'll enjoy shuttle tatting. Best wishes.
I'm watching many videos, but dint get it. You teach it very clear. Now I can do it👍. Thank you😊🙏
Very glad to hear it Sandhya! :-)
