We often forget how much effort and meaning musicians put into their work. Hours upon hours worth of passion and ideas - all condensed into a track that only lasts a few minutes at most. Here, I'll briefly try to appreciate some of that genius by examining Christopher Young's theme for Sandman, from Spider-Man 3.

ALI, another great vid! Sandman theme is one of my favorites next to Electros. The piano is so powerful, it made me cry the first few times watching this movie 😭.
Love to see what you do next. What musical masterpieces do you have in mind?
@@kingwolf33 I’m going to do Shang-Chi soon, and also try to start another series of longer videos that breakdown my thoughts on songs from iconic movie scenes :)
I don't care if you make spiderman or non spiderman videos your music analysis is incredible! And I'll watch anything you make as long as it's music related
@@artloverivy You should really cover the soundtrack from Attack on Titan if you have seen it. The track T-Kt especially.
This isn’t sandman’s theme, this is the theme of a father who just wants to get to his daughter.

Sometimes I wonder... why _Sandman?_ Of all the characters Raimi could've picked, why was it _Sandman,_ someone who (as far as I know) had never been that popular or interesting, that he wanted to reinvent? And yet Sandman's the best character in his film, and frankly Young did the heavy lifting for that, giving Sandman gravitas and relatability despite his small screentime. Sandman's reinvention by Raimi and Young may just be the most creative thing to happen in any Spider-Man film ever.
Something that really proves your point is that despite all the hate that’s thrown at this film, pretty much nobody thinks Sandman’s portrayal was an issue, and in fact almost everyone can agree that he was the strongest part of the movie.
The answer is simple: Because Raimi thought Sandman's powers had great cinematic potential.
Best character? Seems to be Harry.
@Paz I feel like perhaps the inclusion of "Venom" in the movie allowed the audience to appreciate sandman more when he *did* show up
@Paz They should've saved Sandman for Spider-Man 4 and used just Harry and Venom in Spider-Man 3. Venom is Peter's suit for a portion of the story, so there kind of has to be another villain to fight while Peter is in the Venom suit. Similarly, Harry also needs a second villain in the film, especially if they want to give him a redemption arc. So those two compliment each other really well.
Sandman, on the other hand, is interesting enough to be the antagonist all on his own, or at the very least not be pushed aside by the other two. So waiting until the fourth movie to include him so they can actually give him enough focus would've been better.
That scene of him first rising out of the sand pit is my favorite scene in the entire raimi trilogy. No words are spoken, no fast paced action, just a man waking up to his horrible curse. And the way he finally gains enough determination to form a whole body just by looking at the locket of his daughter is so powerful. Music plays a crucial role in film, and sandman proves it.
Yeah that scene is the best part of Spider-Man 3 in my opinion.
That scene has been so fucking powerful and hasn’t left my mind at all since childhood
this theme make me cry a little bit this scene whas so sad 😢

No words just music and emotions

"Every villain is the hero of their story"
That stood out to me so damn much, and it makes absolute perfect sense in Sandman's case. Truly amazing what they did to the character.

@@BBK113 well psichos are an exception i guess

I'm not a big fan of Spider-Man 3 but this scene alone is a cinematic masterpiece. When he puts all effort to catch his daughter's clock and rise up, this put a tear in my eyes
To be fair the original idea was sand man to be the only villain in the movie. But it was the studio that made them put venom in, basically ruined the entire movie.
@WiiManElite But still tho the Studio and Sony should have never gotten involved in the first place even Sam Raimi was deeply unhappy with how this film turned out to be, Raimi never wanted to include a character that he barley knew
The reinvention of Sandman in Spiderman 3 was, to me, one of the best examples of character building in any of the Marvel movies. In a lot of ways, he is the polar opposite of Spiderman; he is what Peter could have been with just a tiny change of circumstance.
He loves his daughter more than life itself, and like any of us, would walk into any Hell for her. The difference with Flint is that, compared to Peter, he hasn't had the best start to his own life, or so it seems. He hasn't had the same upbringing, the same education or emotional grounding from his own parents. The result is a man who feels he only has a limited number of things he can do to provide for his daughter, and so he uses the only tool he feels he has... his physical strength. Because for her, he'll do anything, no matter the personal cost.
Trouble is, if the only tool you've ever had is a hammer, eventually all your problems start to look like nails...
He could be any of us.
That's an amazing comment I actually got chills reading the last part.
DUDE!!! This comment deserve to be framed, you said it amazingly and the hammer and nails part, was... UFFFFFFF! I felt it! It is really deep and it explain the character so well, pretty cool.
The hammer analogy was really fitting for this character
I love analyzing film scores and character themes. Finally someone who gets how to do it in a simple way without making an entire video essay. Really good video!
I’m glad you like the format! I really wasn’t sure if people were going to like it at first, but it seems to be working for most people thankfully.
@@artloverivy Definitely a great format, keep it up!

@@artloverivy Reading the commentary as the music plays is really smart imo in a different kind of video itd be intercut oddly and u wud lose the cohesive and succinct vibes of ur vids. Plus u time them really well and it matches the shifts in the music. Props and keep up the good work
+1!!
I was THOROUGHLY disappointed that this incredible theme was not in No Way Home. Sandman really felt like he was the least developed villain in the entire film, neck and neck with Lizard, who also received barely any attention.
Really felt like those two should’ve gotten a bit more to develop them, especially when they were noticeably less well developed in their own solo movies in the first place, compared to the likes of Ock, Goblin, and Electro.
I heard a bit of Sandman's theme when he made a sand tornado around the statue of liberty.
While I rather seeing Sandman more instead of Ned, His story didnt have a place to go.
Even in the third movie his main struggle was to find money and learn to turn his condition into superpowers.
He always had one goal, his daughter.
In Spider-Man 3 he never wanted to fight with Spidey, not until afterwards Spider-Man tried to kill him. Which even then they left on good terms.
In this movie, He constantly states he just wants to go back and see his daughter. Yet he can do NOTHING about it for the first half of the movie.
The best course of action is to wait and allow Peter to send them back. Which he does, Then once he realises siding the villains may give him a chance to turn back home quicker, he switches sides.
I think you cant actually give him more without altering his story or personality, which would be problematic.
Lizard on the other hand was used as a mindless monster that can hit hard for the majority of the movie, I'd like to see more on that.
I mean at least Sandman got to help Peter stop Electro, Lizard was stuck in a container the whole time until the final battle.
@@titanium_rocket1505 I can swear they would use his biochemistry knowledge to make cures (like they did with Norman) but they had to change their minds because the actor couldnt make it.
Although It would be funny to see a giant lizard working with Spider-Man in order to find a cure to Sandman.
Sandman is better developed as dock Ock
I mean he has tragity, a very good motivation and isnt really a bad guy
This theme is so underrated. Everyone always rates it last but it is so fire with the scene.
Facts. It deserves more attention.
Who tf rates it last?
@@gv82089 everyone...? No one
Did the lizard even have a motif
The song was his humanity, that scene shows us how human he really is. Even if he is completely made of sand, it shows us how strong his will is. To keep on moving forward from being sand to sand man.
The part that always stood out to me was how he reached for the locket, but couldn’t pick it up. It was the thought of his daughter that gave him the strength to pull himself back together and become the Sandman. His love for her was strong enough to bring him back to full solidity.
Gonna be real, sandman's birth in the movie still makes me tear up a bit and I actively find myself routing for him.
I love this format so much, using the subtitles to really explain the music while also letting the music speak for itself. Your explanations are also really well put and thought out.
ruclips.net/video/HFcaWLIGrvU/видео.html
Pretty fucked for blind people though
X3... 000!!! ✊😄😆😂😇
This song is the perfect example of losing yourself, but holding onto the one thing that drives you, the one thing that keeps you alive, and becoming so obsessed with it you become what you feared, a monster. This song perfectly encapsulates what sandman is as a character, and is honestly the best villain song in any spiderman film
I’ve always loved the brass notes, and the choice to end the more melancholy Birth theme with those sour sounds at full blast. It carries you emotionally from “man, poor guy” to “I just witnessed the birth of a monster” in a split second.
I agree. It’s such a nice way to have your cake and eat it too by treating Sandman like a relatable character and then also threatening at the very end of the scene.
There is nothing more terrifying and monsterous than someone who feels that their child will die if they do not act.
@@singletona082 love can really be a dangerous motivator
The theme of Flint Marko makes me teary eyed everytime. Its tragic but filled with so many other emotions, its just perfect
Christopher Young was an absolute musical maestro in making this iconic theme!
I thought it was Danny Elfman until this day 😮
@@AndersonMallonyMALLONY-EricCF SM3's new themes were Young's. Elfman's old themes were recycled for Hero Spidey.
2:46 Holy shit, I felt that in my spine
Good job dude, you made a perfect analysis to the villains of each generation of Spidermen, you did Mysterio (Holland), Electro (Gafield) and finally Sandman (Maguire).
The Sociopath, The Outcast, and the Tragic Hero.
Thanks 😊 And I love how the other villains are good people with redeeming qualities who just went down a bad path… and then there’s Mysterio 😂
@@artloverivy I, too, am willing to cause mass mayhem for having my life's work be called "B.A.R.F."
Dude, sandman's theme is so damn good, one of my favorite villain themes
It’s because of this movie that Sandman is my favourite Spider-Man villain, no joke. As a kid I loved him because I thought he had cool powers and I only ever watched Spider-Man 3. The older I get however the more I realize just how fleshed out he truly is. He remains my favourite because of Sam Raimi’s will to keep his vision of this character alive even with the studio interference.
"I'm not asking you to forgive me. I just want you to understand"
I never listened to Sandman’s theme. So I’m glad it was broken down to me while I listened to it for the first time!
2:20 i always cried when i hear that part everytime.and afcourse toby"s theme.
2:08 is the part I always remembered
This is a yet another fantastic theme breakdown from you! Sandman has always been my favourite Spider-Man villain for the very reason you stated! He's solely motivated by love, not greed like so many other villains. Over time I've come to realize that I can't listen to this theme without tearing up.
Thanks for watching! And yeah I obviously agree it’s such a well done and emotional piece.
I’m glad someone finally recognized the first and only song in a movie to ever make me cry, as a kid.
this literally got uploaded as i was watching mysteirios theme lmao
Lucky you 🍀
His theme is beautiful. Its kinda interesting how The tune suits The character. Like Vergil and 'Bury The Light' ir Sephiroth 'One Winged Angel, for example. Nice analysis
Honestly I tear up every time I hear the soft part of this song. You gotta root for a loving father.
Looking forward to you analyzing Danny Elfman's, James Horner's, Hans Zimmer's, and Michael Giacchino's Spider-Man themes :)
He already analyzed some of them.
I’ll get around to them eventually! Maybe I’ll do all three in the same video to really show the strengths of each one. Just be patient because it’s gonna take some time!
*She. And I think they meant for the heroes not the villains, but thanks for trying to clarify 💖
@@artloverivy Oh, sorry.
@@pinhe4d321 Don’t worry you’re good 😊
I loved this theme as a kid.
It always felt like he was a villain, but for the wrong reason, I love how it transitions to a more melancholy motif.
Will you do one for Tom's Spider-Man score progression across his trilogy? That really stands out to me and I want to see your analysis
I think I might do something like that with all 3 Spider-Men at some point
his themes are nowhere near as iconic
@@reubenthomas6889 I agree.. MCU, even with all its resources, really let down Tom
@@reubenthomas6889 It may not be as "iconic," but you have to understand that it's incredibly difficult to write anything as iconic as what's come before. I think a lot of things go overlooked because they're not considered as "iconic," and while there is merit to wanting something to be perceived in that light, it's never going to strike the same chord. I think there's a lot of really good stuff the MCU is putting out, music-wise that's just straight up ignored because of this concept, and I think it's worth looking into and seeing what's there to possibly appreciate.
@@suicidalloafofbread2009 the music is simply incredibly bland and boring. And this concept you speak of while it has basis in reason it’s simply not true - the man of steel theme is arguably as iconic as the old superman theme, even though I don’t like snyder’s movies.
I liked Sandman's character even though spiderman was my favorite but Sandman was different he wasn't entirely bad he just wanted to help his daugther and he didn't wanted to kill uncle Ben it was an accident and i'm glad Peter forgived him
That theme that plays when he awakens as Sandman for the 1st time is just pure beauty. It's an amazing mix between audio and visual
I’ll forever be baffled at the incredible capacity of music to make us feel emotion. It’s literally just air vibrating in different ways, and yet just a combination of notes can create in incredible details a full story. Truly mind-blowing
In my opinion this is one of the greatest scenes in superhero movies. Spider-Man 3 wasn't a good film at all, and I wished Venom wasn't in the movie and they just stuck with Sandman and Harry Osborn, but man this scene hits hard. Sandman picking up the locket and seeing the picture of his daughter broke my heart. Sandman had the potential to be one of the greatest villains in superhero movies. When you make a villain you sympathize with, feel sad for, and root for him, then you know you've made a great villain. Not all villains are bad.
not a good film at all???
bruh you are still in 2007 and mad at Sony, yes theres alot of flaws, but it's still a fun great film overall, literally the only bad parts is when Venom is involved, not the black suit, not Sandman ESPECIALLY, he's the best part of this film and imo saved whatever little wasn't salvaged in the end
i know alot of people didn't like spider-man 3 that's ok i respect everyone's difference opinion but for me i love spider-man 3 it was a good movie to me
Beautifully analysed.
The piano part continues into the second last scene, where Flint Marko and Peter Parker stand together, facing each other.
This is why I love Sandman and his theme. Out of the villain themes, his theme is the only thing I understood when I was a kid. I understood his motivations more than Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus. He’s my favorite “villain” of the Spider-Man Trilogy, so I was excited when he appeared on Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The scene where he is unable to pick up the locket……even in his sand form….because of such a beautiful music…..he conveyed his emotions and made me cry!……
Finally Spider-Man 3 gets some attention, i never understood the hate it gets. It's my favorite of the trilogy, it has a dark horror aesthetic that none other movie brings to us. Hopefully we will get the Raimi cut one day too. #Releasetheraimicut
Sandman’s first forming will never not make me cry. A man finds the will to keep going to save his daughter’s life despite his deformation. Once he realizes what’s at stake, he wills himself back into existence. It’s truly inspiring and heartwarming. But also heartbreaking at the same time, as this man has been broken by the world around him
I love that you’re giving these leitmotifs the recognition they deserve. You’ve got to do Prowler’s (from Into the Spider-Verse) theme next! The score really conveys things in a manner that’s similar to how you described Mysterio’s theme, where it basically tells a narrative by itself rather than filling in as background noise. The respective scene where it plays really wouldn’t have had such an impact without it. It’s truly amazing
I've always thought that piano motif when he sees the locket really expresses how much his daughter meant to him. As a young kid I didn't quite get his motivations, but still felt like I understood it nonetheless through the power of that small but beautiful tune.
Oh my God. I’d forgotten about this. Nostalgia through the roof
Golden Globe-nominated composer Christopher Young has scored almost 100 successful features ranging across virtually every genre, all with strikingly original music. Beautifully analysed.
I love how you explain the themes, it makes me want more of these types of commentaries to exist. Just captions and the music. No voice overs. I'll definitely be waiting for more.
I’m so glad it worked for you!
I would say the sadder theme is Flint Marko's theme as the intimdating theme is Sandman's theme
A theme which shows how people move forward with pain and sorrow in them ....and do anything for loved ones and family

In an age of superhero movies, where music and soundtracks seem like an afterthought (barring a few exceptions), it's amazing to see how the music stood out in the Raimi trilogy (even though the third movie had a different composer)
Not gonna lie, I actually cried at the end of the movie when Sandman apologized to Peter and told him about his daughter, and then just flew away. It was sad AF specially with the theme playing in background
As a boy when I watched this movie during this scene I did feel a little bad for him but thought there was no excuse...
As a Father watching this again, I felt overcome by emotion was found myself rooting for him. I felt his pain and anger when all he wanted to due was help his daughter...all of this while holding my 3 year old. Music is a powerful thing
It’s incredible how music can tell a story without words!

Oh man, everytime I listen Sandman's introduction theme, I can't stop tearing up by how it's orchestrated and the feelings it wants to give.
The way you passionatly describe the Themes makes me trink you're a nice person

bruh this channel has like given me a new found love for the music in movies the way you describe the music and how they mesh with the scene is honeslty awsome
this actually made me cry. your commentary is awesome.
I was 7 years old when this film was out. And we went to the theatres as a family. I still remember how amazed and awestruck i was by both music and visuals of this scene. Man that music takes me back ages. When I see the sandman rising scene or hear the music, I'm taken back years to the theatre again. Such a masterpiece. That music has soul.
The moment in the theme that coincides with Flint laterally pulling himself back together is what stands out the most for me, the gentle piano sound makes me feel like the universe was aware that Flint was in a very vulnerable state (having just watched himself disintegrate - slowly enough to comprehend it, but too fast to come to terms with his demise) but it still had to break the news to him. It's like Flint was being told: "Hey, it's okay, you're still alive. Now I want you to try to sit up...that's it, good. I need you to listen to me, you've been changed physically, but you're still you on the inside, This is going to be a lot to take in, but try to keep calm. Remember what you were doing? Reach out and try to grab that shiny pendant over there, focus, concentrate and imagine your hands, your fingers...that's it....very good."
"Do you remember who that is? Your daughter, you were trying to save your daughter, see NEEDS you! You thought you were going to die, but instead you've been given a gift, a gift you can use to help SAVE her, get the MONEY for your DAUGHTER! Now I want you to stand up! STAND UP! Now with this gift, you can get the money, save your daughter, be her HERO, and don't let anything or anyone stand in your way!"
My god sandman being written so well was a surprise and completely blew my 7 year old self away ... back then watching a superhero movie made you transition between different emotions and the spiderman 3 ending and especially sandman made my heart feel very very heavy ....
Tobey and Andrew's Spiderman movies keep giving me goosebumps all throughout the movies. The individual music for all characters in all of them give me goosebumps every time. Those movies are the definition of masterpiece. You could even connect with the villains of the first trilogy on an emotional level. Tom's Spiderman movies haven't done that for me, not even a little bit. They don't even have the masterpiece musics.
Thats why they were very nostalgic because of the soundtrack and its very masterpiece, its shows that effort of composing soundtrack is very important in every film

A dream I had was I fell off climbing up this mountain and a boulder landed on my legs when I hit the ground. Still alive, but I couldn't get myself free. Suddenly this anthro-dragoness shows up and using her claws cuts my legs off and rushes me to this sorcerer and his daughter. They save me When I begin to wake up this music is playing. I'm alive, but now I look like an anthro-dragon. The difference between me and the dragoness is I've got wings. She's a sea-dragoness.

This is such a cool idea to do the analysis in the captions. Helps to be able to listen to the beautiful score and just read along.
I’m glad you approve 💖
Sandman is the reason I can never fully enjoy Spider-man 3; too clearly through him can you see the film Raimi was trying to make, but couldn't due to the studio interfering. If it hadn't been for all the forced Venom content stealing his screentime, I fully believe Sandman would be regarded as equal to Gobby and Doc Ock, and there's no better evidence than the sand pit scene. Genuine masterful film making, the synergy between the music and visuals is just so unbelievably emotive that you become glad there's no dialogue to interrupt it, everything you need to understand is told to you through the feelings the music invokes. It's art.
100%

I still maintain to this day that had Raimi been allowed to focus on Sandman in Spiderman 3 as he initially intended it would've been a masterpeice to rival his second outing. Every scene with Church in it had a soul and gravitas that the rest of the film lacked.

Sandman rising truly tells us what Raimi wanted for Spider-Man 3. Unfortunately Sony got in the way wanting Venom and so Raimi did his best to have both. It's true, Spider-Man 3 could've been better but evenso, it still is one of the most memorable films for me. It is also my childhood. No amount of critics will change that
