How is Eastern Germany Progressing? | People and Politics

  • Schwedt and Eisenhüttenstadt were once major centers of heavy industry in East Germany, producing oil and steel. After the collapse of communism, they went into decline. Whereas Eisenhüttenstadt managed to recover, however, Schwedt has not.
    Are these towns typical of overall development in the former East Germany? How so local residents there view progress? And what role does politics play, 25 years on?

    Politicians say that unemployment is 9 percent. The reality is around 20 percent.

      Yes, I was about to mention that, western propaganda is disgusting, these 20% are human beings, if you want to force us to have capitalism then at least say the reality as it is so we can try and fix it through your failing system.

    I wouldn't mind living in a city like Eisenhuttenstadt.It's looks really nice and quiet.If they built a new Univercity that would start bringing back the young generation

    • @grantbeerling4396
      @grantbeerling4396 5 лет назад +3

      Funny I thought the same....Regeneration is difficult, but from past personal research it starts with the state offering a carrot, a trained workforce, good infrastructure, a sense of place that comes from developing 'places' ie the whole 'place making' philosophy...

    • @1988deef
      @1988deef 3 года назад +1

      That's right, but the problem is: the government doesn't want that and the nation is overaged. Families and young people are unfortunally not supported in Germany. Money goes to the rich ones, the concerns, politicians and millionaires who lead the state. For families with more than three kids it's even hard to find a residence.

    If things are this bad in East Germany, can you imagine North Korea when it finally falls?

  • @GoodVideos4
    @GoodVideos4 8 лет назад +41

    Oh well, the German nation generally is hard working. Look at how quickly they built themselves up after the two world wars. So, can apply to the former East Germany also.
    Look to those times in their past for inspiration.

    • @GoodVideos4
      @GoodVideos4 6 лет назад +9

      Well, more and more young people are returning. I also wouldn't want to be so pessimistic, arrogant and judgemental about it.
      If someone is in error, educate don't belittle. A reason is because the focus will be on the belittle part, not the educate part. So yes, I know that you are dumb.

    • @1988deef
      @1988deef 3 года назад +2

      @Average Joesson You are wrong. There are not only old people in East Germany and a lot of people return, too. The biggest problem is the migration into cities because it destroys the villages. But that also seems to change now because of corona virus and the summer heat which heats the towns and flats up more and more because it's getting warmer (there are no air conditioners in the flats).

    Germany is a beautiful nation but the fall of the DDR came too quickly and suddenly. There was no proper transition, and I hate to see the homeland of my ancestors fall apart like this. It may be controversial to say this, but I think the fall of the Eastern Bloc really hurt the world in the long term.

    • @GDRAFPilot_
      @GDRAFPilot_ 5 лет назад +11

      @sparkz the only reason why the eastern bloc fell is because of the Soviet internal crisis and Gorbachev letting the people do their revolution against their communist government

      In my town, you can reach everything quite easy by tram or bus and there is also a good health care. That's good for the elder. But outside the cities, a car is needed because in the last 30 years, nearly every shop in the villages has been closed (background: in GDR times, there were shops like barbers, post offices, bakeries and butcher shops in nearly every small village).

    • @1988deef
      @1988deef 3 года назад +2

      That's right. The salaries in the east of Germany (the New Laender) are between 10 and 25% less. The wage floor today is as high as the salaries in West Germany around 40 years ago. I know nobody here (Saxony) who earns the German average wage. Most people get the wage floor or something between the wage floor and the average wage.

    Simple, East Germany sets the lowest tax rate in the country and businesses will move there. Won't take long until revenue starts flowing in

    • @mikedresel731
      @mikedresel731 6 лет назад +2

      skojo3e Thats not like business works.If you want to attract companies to a certain area which produces innovating stuff you need qualified people in this area.But to get qualified people to move or stay in this area , the sate have to offer them good quality of live. So the stats needs taxmoney to provide this conditions.
      If you just lower the taxes you onley attract companies which produce simple stuff, which need qualified works.The problem is that you never can be so ceap like coutrys in asia or east europa. And second whats the point in a race to the botton, if for example state A lowers the taxes to attract companies from state B and C , state B and C will follow it lower the taxes even more. In the end B C A will have lowered the taxes to the point where the can't rebuild ther infrastructure. Meanwhile state D has invasted in his infrastructure and have attracted innovativ companies maby even a few companies from the tax haven states A B or C . Why you ask , because this firms had to pay so much more money for logistic etc. ,because of the bad infastructur that it is ceaper go produce in state D.

  • @hyatech

    My idea would be, that the government builds up IT-infrastructure and lowers the taxes. Maybe you can get innovative start-ups in theses cities, that want low rents, but need fast internet.

    • @1988deef

    No different than anyplace else where people can freely move around. If people can move, they'll do it, and they'll leave behind the boring or depressed areas. This only does NOT happen where governments control movement and don't allow it.

    The ice cream vendor's stall only gets crowded on hot days. I've interestingly heard that it's better to eat ice cream on cold days, as it contains sugar, warming a person up. And, at least elsewhere, thus more sales of ice cream on cold days. I also would only want to eat ice cream on cold days.
