West Germany banned a number of parties, both left and right, that broke no laws during the Cold War. They do have that right; they’re not a democracy, they’re a liberal regime.

It might actually weaken the democratic institutions more than having a government involving the AfD. Being in a government requires a party to deliver political promises to voters, so there is actual risk for the AfD to lose votes as a result of bad governing.
