I'm excited that he's excited over his beets🙂
Captain Nemo IKR? It’s part of the charm of his channel.
The excitement is as if he never peeked at the beets all season. But it's fun to watch
clearly we need a gif
He's got the beet!!!!
@@kenttheboomer721 ah huh! He certainly does!!!
Charles Dowding always recommends multi-sowing beets, radishes, herbs, peas, onions, and all sorts. As he says, "it's like they want to be with their friends". And in my own experience now, just about every brassica will benefit from multi-sowing! It's like a gardening cheat code XD
Even large brassicas like cabbage?
I do my red onions this way and they do so good!
Brassicas?! Whaaaa?! For realz? And when I get a starter pack with 2 seedlings tight together, I gently, gingerly coax them apart. Is this a mistake?
@@ericchandler90 starting from seed or sets? Could sets be planted this way? I've still got some around that weren't all planted. I suppose I could experiment, even though I know they won't likely bulb out this late in the season. Maybe I'll get larger "green onions" though, as they push apart from one another. Hmm...
@@4UnlimitedBEing
Both seeds and starter bulbs do great with this method. I will plant my bulbs about a half inch to one inch apart. Seeds seem to do better being crammed close.
Charles Dowding does this. 3 to 5 beet seeds together; he pulls the biggest off the beets in succession, and lets the smaller ones keep growing.
I just saw a blog post of Charles on multi sow. The leeks look really nice because they grow up out of the dirt. So you don’t have that much sand in them to contend with.
Also I see that you direct sow yours. What I think I’m going to do is use the soil blocker. I’m going to start my seeds in them. Then transplant the block directly.
Cherna Gast yes, he is the best. You can do it with radishes too.
the no dig legend himself :D
Cherna Gast Yes, this is where I learned thus technique as well. I don’t know why Luke didn’t mention him in this video. I’m pretty sure he also learned this from Mr. Dowding, and should have at least given him a shout out, instead of going on and on about people who thought he was crazy for trying this technique, and how it’s “new” information. Certainly new for many gardeners, but not a newly discovered approach to gardening. I love learning new things from more experienced gardeners and I watch tons of gardening videos on RUclips. If I ever decided to do gardening videos myself, I’d like to think that I would give credit where credit is due, for great tips I learn along the journey that is becoming a great gardener. I know I’m forgetful though, so if I couldn’t remember where I heard/learned it from, I’d at least give a disclaimer that I saw it on a RUclips video, or learned it from someone else, instead of presenting the topic like I had pioneered the technique myself......
Three GoodEyes Well from a marketing standpoint alone it’s wise to give people credit.
I cried a little when you said what a blessing!! I prayed over both our gardens when we planted, for a great harvest.
Great episode Luke! Multi-sown beets are the best!
If you twist the larger beets out gently when you harvest them you won’t disturb the smaller beets as much and then the smaller ones can grow on 😀
Thank you for adding this reply. I was wondering about this very thing. 🙂👍🏻
That’s what my Grandma used to do. Pull the bigger ones gently, allow the adjacents to continue to grow.
Hes always excited this many years later. I dont like beets but I'm about ready to plant some now lol!
We tried yellow beets once,...different flavor, more potato-like! You may like them! :D
@@robine916 oh wow. No seeds around now but they are on the list for next year, thank you!
Try them with sour cream. That is how I learned to like them. Now I don't need the sour cream.
@@humblecourageous3919 thank you for the tip. I dont like sour cream tho lol, however I love them spiced or pickled so I will make a few batches of each as I cant get anyone in the house to eat them either but I have always known with that deep red color they have to be so good for you!
I think I like the beet greens just about as much as I do the beets themselves! Win, win!!
I saw the video on trio seeding. I tried it. I am also very impressed.
I planted again, between the rows. They are about 2" high. Now, when I harvest this coming weekend, I will have a new set of beets ready to take off. At this rate, I may be able to get three large harvests of beets out of that same narrow space.
That's an excellent idea! It seems like beet seedlings are pretty fragile in hot sun, this time of year
Where is that video?
@@Themurphyshow7 I LOVE that idea!! ❤
I love that you said what a blessing bc it really is and most gardeners don’t awknowlesge that
This is how I grow my beats and I am thoroughly satisfied with results every single harvest. It made my heart so happy to see how happy you were pulling your beets just like I was a few minutes ago😁😁
Watching with my kids. They’re as excited as he is for him. Getting a stereo of “Oh ya!!”s
Stephen Leaf cute that the kids get excited.
Beets and radishes grow fabulously like this. I appreciate that you mentioned that you didn’t make this way of planting up on your own-that it’s been done for years. I agree that people criticize the method till they see the results themselves. Nice harvest!
I found this out by accident. I was growing some microgreens indoors and I accidently dropped some turnip seeds in a different tray. They started growing and I did not know what they were as they grew big before I saw them and did not recognize them. I decided to let them grow to see what they were. They grew into 3 nice size turnips, now I am planting them on purpose : ) It is fun to grow turnips indoors when there is 10 inches of snow on the ground.
Your enthusiasm makes me smile. I love how harvesting makes you soooo happy.
This is your best and most important episode for people feeding themselves this essential super food!!!
I absolutely love your enthusiasm with gardening. You’re quite an inspiration as well as an educational fountain. Thanks for everything you do.
not new to gardening by any means, but I've not grown beets before, I always assumed the body of the beet had to be in soil but apparently not. Very cool, I'll need to try this. And one of the best parts of the beet are its greens ;)
The first season growing beets I didn't thin them at all. 2 rows about 6 feet long, and I had an insane harvest of greens and then beets. A few of them were bordering on softball size(they were a little tough because I let them grow too long before harvesting).
He sounds like I do when I'm harvesting... it never gets old. haha! Christmas in the garden!
As my multi-sown (directly into the garden soil) beets are expanding to gigantic size, I've been "stealing" greens to use in salads. BUT - I tried chopping up some of the greens and put about a cup of them into my morning protein shake. I know - sounds weird! IT WAS AWESOME! They added a bit of that earthy flavor - but I didn't notice what I would call leafy material. It made for a SUPER HEALTHY, TASTY SHAKE! :) Thanks for all your advice, Luke!!!! I've never had such success growing beets before! :D
If I dont get this excited, its only because I am not great at growing roots. Im working on it! Some day I hope to be WOW WOW WOW WOW WOOOOOOW!! Adore your excitement! It's why I follow you! You can't fake that excitement!
I love that he says "this is what dreams are made of" any passionate gardener would agree. But my mind instantly went to a song using alternate words "Sweet dreams are made of beets" LOL
lol ... love it!
He's so friggin wholesome.
I agree and he is so darn cute!
Beet dreams are made of these!!!! 🎼

This is just delightful... I’m getting proper ‘Double Rainbow’ vibes from how excited you are 🌈🌈😆
Your joy is almost better than the size of those beets! Awesome!
Oh good! I did this with my beets after watching another video about doing this with carrots. I was starting to get worried but I’m not now. Awesome! Excited to harvest now. ☺️
I was excited when I got a golf ball sized beet to grow this year. Congrats on another great harvest Luke, and thanks for spreading the word on the method you used to grow them.
Glad I saw this vid! Sometimes it pays to be a gardening rebel.
I love it when a plan comes together! Quick tip for you... if you twist out the larger ones (instead of pulling them), you're less likely to pull out the smaller ones when you harvest. What variety of beet did you plant Luke?
I used this method after watching this when I planted a couple of months ago and truly my best beat harvest ever!!!! Thank you for sharing is why I had to come back to thank you!!!
This is great! I have a small space in an organic community garden and am going to plant beets now (July) to harvest by the end of summer. It's so good to know that I can plant many in a small space. Enjoy your beets and thanks for the helpful videos!
This is gonna be the very first time I'm gonna try to grow beets. I can't wait. Im so excited! I love pickled beets so thats what I'm doing with mine!
It’s so great to see your successful garden. I to am happy that Luke is so full of joy & expresses this in his videos. Thank you Luke, we all support you & love your channel!
The beet roots are a real bonus. I just a can’t get anough of the leaves! Been eating the leaves all spring and just about to harvest the roots. Already got another beet crop on the way to replace them. Guess I’m a beetnik. Nyuk nyuk nyuk 😉
Amazing, you cannot "beet" that harvest😂😂😂😂😂😂sorry, I had to.
👏👏👏🤭
Fantastic!! 😍 Awesome idea.
It made me wonder, I'm going to try it with turnip too.
Thank you sooo much. 🙏

I just want to express my gratitude for all your sharing on this channel. I'm a newbie gardener, in the past two years, I've been learning from you on different topics. It's such a great help. And your genuine passion on gardening is so encouraging. I can share your joy when you were holding that bunch of giant beets! Wish you another wonderful growing season!

looking for it and it was too far down.
I came looking for the Dwight comments! 😂
Love the yield! How big are the cells you plant the 3 seeds in? How close together do you plant the cells when you transplant? What varieties do you recommend?
This is what I would like to know, did you get an answer? I didn't see a response to your question
I'm just heading up to harvest my beets too! I multi-sewed without knowing it was a good idea lol. And you are right, they popped out of the soil and look like they will be beautiful!!
They look like a beautiful bouquet💐🤣. Sometimes in gardening, when a method goes right, there is no better word than 'WOW'! Loved this video!

Lmao! I was thinking the same thing. "Luke... Do ya need a towel?... Are ya gonna be ok buddy?" Now I really want to plant beets!
Little late, but I just pulled up a beet the size of my fist. I started to search beet RUclips videos and it brought me here. Your reaction is about what I just did. You would have thought I hit the lottery, coming in the house shaking my beet saying “do you see this!?!?” I’m loving how excited you are. I’m vibing off your energy!
I've always believed in crowding veggies. Spacing is for large agriculture to make processing easier.
I smoosh as much into a bed as humanly possible 😆
My zucchini plants relate to this. 😅
Yep lettuce is great to tuck under larger plants.
A little less than 20 large beets in that bunch you showed, guess it depends on how many you have left in the ground. So I'm not seeing a huge benefit but you are probably getting more beet numbers overall plus the density reduces weeds. I direct sowed beets this year and transplanted some. The transplanted ones did much better but they were better spaced.
@@Biophile23 Good to know. I am experimenting with crowding multiple plant varieties together to see how they do. So far, pretty good. Radishes fill in gaps, beets are ok, chinese cabbage is good and when I harvest something there is room for other plants to grow. Good to know beets like a little more room. Cheers!
I used this technique this year but when I did it I did 3 different kinds of beets in each square
Awesome idea! Have you harvested yet? How did that work out?
Monica Partington it worked out fairly well
I love your beet enthusiasm! It makes me happy!
Your harvest is FANTASTIC! May ask how do you preserve your beets? Canning, dehydrating? And what do you do with the greens, use them for compose or eat them? If your canning them, have you, or will you, do a video on your canning process?
Try to dehydrated them then put them in the blender. Put some in a shaker and Add them To the foods soups salads smoothies
Or just water. Also do the same with the root and use it in the same way. The green beet powder is excellent for your liver.
Your excitement over your beet harvest is the motivation I needed to get my second planting set. 😄❤️
I'll have to try this method. I love beets, especially pickled
I really appreciate not just the wonderful classes, but how every episode is family friendly. No profanity. No using the Lords name in vain. Just good clean fun in the dirt!
Agreed 👍🏾
agree.. hes a respectful young man
Why would there be profanity in a beet growing video??
I don't know what gardening videos you've been watching.
Yeah vegetables hate foul language.
You've convinced me. I always tended to overseed my garden but never to extent. Since we do raised beds, I will definitely be increasing my seeding to a new level. Thanks so much for bringing this to our attention.
That is how I am growing my beets this year, too! I started them in soil blocks. I am growing white turnips like this as well! I start a tray of beets and turnips every week or two so that I have a constant supply of beets and turnips to fill any gaps in the garden!
When you say “start a tray” ... are you transplanting?
@@gailwallace3695 Yes, I am! That is how Charles Dowding does it! It works beautifully!
skittles99 thank you!!
Love that you recorded your reaction!!! Made me smile and very happy for you! Never would've thought crowding them would work. I'll give it a try!!
Great beet harvest and love your enthusiasm! I just ordered more Trifecta Plus the other day. The veggies in beds I put it in are doing so much better than the ones I didn't have enough for and had used another brand. There is no comparison!
Wow!!!! I’m impressed with your beet garden and your presentation. Been vegan for 17 years and starting beet garden this year. I grew them differently before but your way looks so productive. Thank you! 🌱🌱👍🙏

Good job, Luke!!! I love being able to witness your excitement and success. You are an inspiration to keep growing! ❤️
The three “b’s” of successful gardening. Beets, Bears, Battle Star Galactica! ✌🏻🇺🇸
Question? Which bear is best?
John alderson wrong! The black bear
If only cylons could be programed to pull weeds.
That was exciting. Because of your encouragement I am planting more green beans, and I have decided to put in another bed for beets and turnips because I have found they are so good roasted! These are New To me this year...wish me luck!
Delighted for you, Luke, that you're so exhilarated by your beet harvest! Will you try multi-sowing with other root crops, such as your radishes, turnips, and so on?
I just sowed beets for the first time 1 week ago. I’m excited to see how it will turn out. I’m going to add more seeds.
This is great. I saw Charles Dowding's video on doing this but loved your reaction...that was priceless.
I LOVE BEETS. Just planted 2 weeks ago. And agree with what you are saying! Have grown them for years.

Nothing beets this method... you had me convinced in a heartbeet.
Stop harvesting pun weeds:p

I will try that next year. This was my first year growing root vegetables and I thinned them all and they were all very small. That was one great harvest of beets. Thanks for sharing this!
I'm growing beets in some of my potted fruit trees. They are huge!
Omg! I never thought of that. Great idea! I have some potted fruit trees. If I did that do u think theyd grow well mid july in kansas? Its pretty hot but they would be shaded. Hmm... I feel an experiment coming on...
@@amandaadams4103 Oh indeed! It was easier than I thought. I was experimenting too. I planted one fava in each plant. Cut it when it got about 5". Added leaves to pot. I have one pot for growing more fava seeds. I have a garlic and onion in other trees. They get too dry. Won't do it again. Happy Gardening Sis💚🌱
I never thought of doing that! And its not too crowded?
Hi Luke,
A nice crop of beetroot.
Charles Dowding also does multi sow for quite a few crops, including beets, radishes, leeks, parsnips, turnips and some others.
A good way to increase production.
Regards Dennis
Amazing harvest! I think you could have left the smaller beets there to grow and catch to the big ones for a second harvest.
I had heard the term multi-sowing casually thrown around for beets. Thank you for showing me what it is and what it yields. Amazing. I will definitely be doing this.
I like the little ones best for pickling whole! Will try this next year!
Oh, make no mistake...you’re crazy but in the best way ever!♥️👍🤓
Debra Bjornsen what’s your pickling method?
Ger Riding I use the recipe variation for sweet pickled beets in the ball canning book. Instead of regular pickling spices you use cloves and cinnamon sticks infused in the brine.
I love the flavor of cloves so this is a winner!🤓
My tendersweets turned out amazing! Shorter with more girth. My first success with carrots! Crazy that i havent had much luck with Scarlet nantes, even with raised beds on top of clay. You just never know. Gotta say, you are a gardener after my own heart...high i tensity gardening.😀 I always get flack from people about this. Happy harvesting!
The smaller beets are my favourite, there sweeter and not as earthy.
I agree. Although I'm sure it depends on the varieties. My father always taught me to pick them smaller for flavor.
It’s rather ironic, but I always avoided the larger beets at the market for the same reason....until I was forced to buy them because that’s all I could get....and to my complete shock found them to be sweeter, tastier, and more tender! Now I go for the big ‘uns!!
@@dianeharrell817 Can I ask what variety they were? I've found smaller was better with the Detroit variety but there's so many variables in gardening.
I also enjoy smaller beets.

My jaw literally dropped at those beets! I can’t wait to try this with mine for the fall! Thanks for your wisdom Luke!

The littles are great pickled. Every part of beets are delicious, love the greens.
You put my beets to shame. Back to the drawing board next year!
You still have time for a fall crop
smaller beets taste sweeter and less earthy
Next year.... nah I'm gonna start me some near the end of summer. My winters are very mild.🤷🏼♀️😁
I had beets just as big as these this year growing them more traditionally. I tilled compost into my soil and made sure it was loose. I planted them in full sun and let grass grow with them so the leaves didn't get muddy. They turned out great and I was able to get another batch in the soil for fall.
I am so excited to try this with my sugar beets this year! I've been wondering how to get enough by spacing them, and this is perfect!
Check out Charles Dowding’s multi sown videos!
I planted mine by his way this year and they are doing pretty good, o take the bigger ones as I need them and leave the littles to grow more.
I use similar principles with most of my plants even raddishes I included broad beans in my bed this year for the first time and designated a whole bed to them and followed the spacing direction but I had a few seeds left over so threw them in with the crowded beds . And the ones I threw in the crowded beds are growing heaps better than the ones in their own recommended spacing bed
This is amazing! I will be trying this method with my fall garden! Do you still space the rows 6" apart wh n multi-sowing, or do they need more room between rows?
The way I spaced mine is, first I started them in soil blocks. (You can also use starter cells or small cups if you don't have a soil blocker). Then I thinned to three plants per block. Then, using the square foot method, I planted each square with four blocks per square foot, which results in 12 beets per square foot. When you use this method, you don't have to put rows in between if you are growing in raised beds. If growing in-ground, you would only need a row about every three to four feet so that you can walk in your row, yet still reach your beets for harvest. This works well with turnips and onions, too! When harvesting, gently twist and pull your largest first, and then any remaining small ones can continue to grow on till they are the desired size. Check out Charles Dowding on RUclips!
I've never grown beets before but this is getting me into the spirit
How far apart did you sow the multisown modules? Beets are one of my favorite things to grow in the garden, but I struggle with them!
Just what I was planning to ask!
WOW I loved learning about how you grew them so close together. I wish I knew it before I transplanted mine from pot to raised bed to give them more room.
When did you plant them? My beets are still tiny leaves (maybe 6") with no bulbs in sight and its already mid July.
Did you fertilize and get the soil really loose? Beets are heavy feeders, it seems. This was my first successful year with them and I think it's because I finally used fertilizer
Hey Luke thanks for this video , I harvested mine today but just found this video . I'm going to plant a second round following this advice. I love the taste of the Early Wonder Tall Top variety you sell. Thanks i'm off to plant more.
