About a month ago, this phone booth was taken out. It's an empty patch of concrete there now. They should have left it there, or restore it to full working condition.
We still have pay phones in Australia. There is a government policy called the Universal Service Obligation (USO) so by law, the telephone company Telstra has to still provide pay phones and landlines. And all of the pay phones are free and you can call the pay phones
I worked at a call center about 10 years ago. 10 years old for a fancy cell phone is nothing. Had one lady call and said her six year old just lost his new iPhone 3GS. No six year old needs a phone of any type. And I've never found a phone booth that had an intact phone book in it.
phone booths don't exist in my area since the place didn't have people when phone booths were a thing now im trying to write a scene for personal enjoyment and needed to know how phone booths work to try and be accurate since I can't ask my parents (again, the area and country was underdeveloped and only the capital had them if my assumptions are correct)
There was also the "post-pay" phone. Making a local call, the user would deposit their dime or quarter when the called phone answers. Busy or no answer? No coin deposit required.
That’s why he specifically states, IF somebody answered the call, and the call extended past a few initial seconds of talking time, you lost your money. Meaning you called a wrong number, business you wanted no longer existed, or even a voicemail picked up the line, etc. I remember this being true also. If the person didn’t pick up the phone within 10 seconds or so, hang it up to get your money back and try again. That way a voicemail doesn’t pick up and waste your money. Even then, if you reacted fast enough after realizing it was a voicemail, hanging up within the first couple seconds would still generally refund you.
@@PayterX We are both old people to know that. I'm 67, soon to be 68 in two months. Gee, how time fly's; it seems just yesterday that I was a young boy checking phone booths looking for the dime someone forgot to take...
@@markmaloney8154 Hell I still did that to the payphone outside of my local corner store until they finally tore it down... in 2022. It hadn't even been connected to service in who knows how long, but I would still find some quarters in it once in a while
Cell phones made the world safer though the 70s and 80s were very violent people forget Yeah distracted driving is a negative but before phones people got murdered and kidnapped more

I remember all of that and I also remember pagers and answering machines.
I was 16 in 1996. I remember having to call home from a mall pay phone. Fun times.
When I was in high school (1997-2001). We had a payphone mounted to the wall right at the front entrance of our school.

This had to be 10 minutes long?
Well, I feel sorry if this telephone booth is missing a working telephone and a door.
Actually this just happens in the United States other countries phonebooks are still very popular
He's wrong, if no one answered the phone, you got your money back...
