Yeah, I like videos like this (as well as videos with simple narration explaining what's happening). I didn't come to watch some guy talk too loud about how cool it is. I came for the cool smoke and how to make it.

I remember trying to do this stuff as a kid 30 years ago and lighting my kitchen table on fire trying to cut off match heads. What a good time to be alive for a kid.

For a more vivid coloration of the smoke, I suggest adding powdered paint to the mixture instead of the crayon wax. It seems to bond better with the smoke mixture in my experience. Powdered tempera paint is also dirt cheap.
minecraftengineer do you add the power dry or wet it. I added dry and it didn't seem to work.
I added green powdered paint and it worked fine. It's all about the ratio. I would say what ratio I used, but it was a while ago and I forgot (sorry). Do some experimentation with the amount of paint, adding slightly more each time until you get the right mix.

Is the smoke toxic? Like is it dangerous if people breath it?
It's non-toxic but it's smoke (burnt particulate) so it can cause various types of irritation.

Well, you are effectively breathing smoke and aerosolized crayon, so that's something you probably don't really want in your lungs. A simple gas mask should be enough..n95 maybe?
Adding a small amount of Bi Carb Soda into the mix will slow down the reaction and create more coloured smoke as the reaction is cooler and longer burning

8 years too late but next time try a hot water bath to melt the wax, as a safety measure

+leftnao hello. Potassium nitrate absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. So if you wish to store them, they have to be stored in an air tight box. (Plastic)

To remove the paper from the crayons super fast, just put them in the freezer for a while... paper slides right off and will save a ton of time if you plan on peeling a lot.

Instead of grinding the sugar into a fine powder, couldn't you just use powdered sugar?
+CtrlAltPhreak I don't know for sure, but probably not, Powdered sugar has corn starch in it to keep it from clumping. I think that would affect the end result.

+ComputerSchool101 We use powder sugar all the time when making fireworks, you are completely fine, just make sure you choose "pure" powder sugar. As for the blender, do NOT use a metal blade. The KNO3 is an oxidizer and due to the friction of the blade may cause combustion.

all the ingredients are non-toxic However no smoke of any kind is good for you (remember kids, smoking is bad for you) but this is pretty close to harmless in low quantities.

Firstly I am not a chemist, just an enthusiastic amateur. However, ammonium nitrate is usually associated with bomb making, so I would be very cautious in both purchasing and using it. The mix I have shown is tried and tested and the same as you will find on countless smoke mix tutorials.

Great videos, you are very gifted at what you do! First off unlike some people watching your videos, I am old enough, and it's amazing how parent's these days do not monitor there kids. I am in the process of making some of your pull string fuses for the smoke bombs. I will be using them in a Cival War reinactment that me and my co worker's participate in every year.
So I was wondering on the pull string fuse, with the 3" shell, how long did you make that fuse? And also would you happen to know what mixture I would use to slow down the burn time?

swallow forge...maybe you can add a tablespoon of baking soda to slow down the burning in order to give you more smoke

In my experience, the baking soda mearly changes the speed of combustion, it doesn't appear to create more smoke. In the open on a windy day, I found that the fast combustion creates a bigger cloud of smoke, the slower burn getting dispersed more quickly. But hey its fun to experiment with these things, so if it works for you it may work for others :) All the best SF

it's relatively harmless, but I wouldn't breathe it. And no, it does not affect clothes

Advise against using yellow tape on an olive drab sphere with a ring on the top. Very easily mistaken for a high explosive (color coding is used for this reason, yellow is HE).Recommend white electrical tape instead. Source: 89 Bravo.

My advice stems from training MOS 89B, USA.
Color coding on artillery is intended to provide visual aid in identifying round contents. Olive drab painted exterior is common, so different colored rings on a round indicate what it is meant to do. Yellow is high explosive, brown is low explosive, red is tracer, silver is incendiary, black is armor-piercing.
Granted a grenade would not likely bear colored markings indicating its usage, but with the militarization of police forces in America one can not be too careful and should try to avoid confusing them, or possibly end up perforated.
i try to maike that with small pownder and they never work do you have the gram of each powder to make that working good

just grab a place to put the powder and use some thing hard to slam and rub it. Slam it (not to hard) then rub it and after a few minutes it should be good

Do not try this at home. If you heat that mixture too much, everything within a 3 foot radius will be en fuego.

nobody would do this in their kitchen most people who can understand this know to use a burner for it that is separate and portable.

You can pick one up second hand for next to no money. Plus ask around, it's the sort of thing people have at the back of a kitchen cupboard and never use. Someone may have one you can have for free.

Potassium nitrate is used for curing meat such as ham, corned beef and making Salami. So some butchers and delicatessens will have some. Also it is used to rot down tree stumps and is sold in some garden centres as Stump Remover. Hope that helps. SF

Well, it depends on where you get it. Some places it's dirt cheap stuff that can rival the quality of say, Hawaiin, but nothing can rival Dutch weed. In some places of the island, it's guarded by soldiers with machine guns and M16s, so you'll have to be very careful, and those areas tend to be a bit expensive.

2. Flashlight (to see what I draw)
3. Paper (to draw on)

5. Aluminum Foil (for boiling stuff or something like this)

ok heres the truth to this video yes it works but not as much smoke as i wanted and there was no color just a lot of damn fire and the other way of cartelizing the sugar is way more effective and produces more smoke

Why does my smoke turn white every time I try this . Like it’s straight up white and there is no color at all.
Depends on quality of the pigment in the crayons. It may be you are burning at too high a heat which will destroy the pigment. Try adding a little baking powder to the mix. Otherwise try using oil based pastels. They also work very well.
