Oh my God! This is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in a long time. I'm not that familiar with Carla Bley's work, but her music and Elling's lyrics (with an assist from Sarah Teasdale) lift this sone to majestic heights without ever straining or wrenching. Goodness! Simply lovely!!!
I would have never and never in a million of years thought it would have been possible to put lyrics on this masterpiece from Carla Bley Kurt Ellings did it beautifully
Fantastic. More attention is deserved for Sara Teasdale, the early 20th century American poet - her poem, “Winter Stars”, was used by Elling as the middle four verses. Her life story is worth exploring (spoiler alert: it’s sad)
Absolutely. I first read it as a 4th grader in Springfield IL when we learned from a favorite teacher that she was in love with local poet Vachel Lindsay.
AcoustiMan check out Practical Arrangement with Kurt Elling and Branford Marsalis. You’ll love that one too. And though it’s instrumental, Carla Bley’s Lawns. Enjoy.
@@waynewillis6768 I think Practical Arrangement is my very favourite Kurt Elling track (although it's so hard to choose just one!) but it is so beautiful and poignant. I also love Calrla Bley's Lawns. :)
Winter Stars BY SARA TEASDALE I went out at night alone; The young blood flowing beyond the sea Seemed to have drenched my spirit’s wings- I bore my sorrow heavily. But when I lifted up my head From shadows shaken on the snow, I saw Orion in the east Burn steadily as long ago. From windows in my father’s house, Dreaming my dreams on winter nights, I watched Orion as a girl Above another city’s lights. Years go, dreams go, and youth goes too, The world’s heart breaks beneath its wars, All things are changed, save in the east The faithful beauty of the stars. why not give it credit -
I’ve loved Carla Bley’s “Lawns” and “Healing Power” since her performance on David Sanborn’s “Night Music” with Bootsey Collins and the house band link: ruclips.net/video/MUwINMW0MbI/видео.html . What a beautiful tune and great addition of lyrics by Kurt Ellington.
OK, Carla is a hip name drop (and image--that hair!), but this is another simple melody--like all the others since folk and country outsold Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, and Jimmy Van Heusen. No worse than Sinatra's descending to "Strangers in the Night" and his final Duets disasters (his best-selling albums). His best recorded work? 1940 to 1965,
It's called a "side stick" or "rim shot" and is played by placing the tip of the stick directly on the skin of the snare and hitting/"snapping" the rim of the snare with the "blunt end" of the stick. So it's more "hitting a ring of metal" LOL! You'll hear it used in many jazz tunes: whether it's suitable in a lyrical tune like _Lawns_ is a matter for debate. Personally, I think it's just being played too loudly (or, the snare mic. is making it *sound* really loud, in which case it's the PA engineer's fault for not turning that mic. DOWN for this one tune).
@@robertphillips2492 I would go with your choice, sir! I've since watched a video of another performance of this, and it seems that this drummer is VERY heavy on his rimshots; or, as I mentioned, it's a bad mix. Then again, both videos are presumably camcorder or phone jobs, so the audio is a nasty blend of direct pickup plus the PA sound, which rarely works well.
This performance will go down in the history books.
What an incredible beautiful song if more people listened to music like this maybe there would be less hate in this world.

Art is the answer.
Amen!
before i read this text i just thought how understanding the beauty of this music can make the world a better place for living !!!
I can't put into context how this song moves me. It's perfectly wonderful.
Kurt has so many beautiful varied performances of this gem

Glad you mentioned Sarah Teasdale...
Carla Bley has written a masterpiece, and Elling’s lyrics are icing on the cake. Wonderful performance.

Kurt Ellings did it beautifully
Check out Night Music with Carla Bley. Bootsy Collins worked on a version that they named Healing Power. Carla plays on it
@Jaycee37 great comment - this is a pointer to one of the best performances to be found on youtube
One of my favorites of Kurt's. Of course, I love everything he does. Thank you!
The restraint and musicianship in the trumpet solo was amazing.. beautiful story told there.
Marquis Hill is an incredible talent.
And the poem in the middle.... "Winter Stars" by Sarah Teasdale.... "I went out a night, alone......"
I am impressed with the vocals and the trumpet player.
As a matter of fact the other musicians are fantastic.
Great work Carla Bley.
a straight f'ing masterpiece
Pure poetic and spiritual beauty! What a masterful performance. Thanks for posting this!
The best version of the wonderful track of Carla Bley. GREAT Kurt Elling
A truly breath-taking interpretation of this absolute masterpiece by Carla Bley. Thanks for uploading this gem

Great, relaxed voice!
Fun fact. The pianist on the original version was Larry Willis (R.I.P). His nickname was Lawns. That's why she named the song "Lawns".
Cheers
What a great voice, timing and performance

Winter Stars

The young blood flowing beyond the sea
Seemed to have drenched my spirit’s wings-

Great version. This is a cool version too... @

The illegitimate son of Duke I suppose?

Unbelievable.
what is that ridiculous " hitting a block of wood " for . Ruins it and a great trumpet solo

Yes, I’m a drummer and personally would have chosen to complement this arrangement with a soft Tom pattern using mallets.

I would have preferred brushes...but it doesn't detract from a wonderful performance.
