Great discussion, Greg!! This is my favorite work of fiction from Peter Ackroyd and such a strange, wonderful book to read. I think I’ve focused so much on the book as a work informed by psychogeography that I’ve never regarded it as postmodernist, so that was an interesting idea to explore. I’m not sure if it was Swift or Bunyan who first introduced me to 17th and 18th century English, but a dose of Boswell in my early twenties certainly helped! Stephenson’s Quicksilver and Vollmann’s Argall took me back to those eras in very different ways. So glad to see the love for Hawksmoor though!! Hope you’re well. Cheers, Jack
_First!_ I'm excited for this review, because you'd mentioned how excellent it was and recommended it, to me. (It's in my Thrift Books cart, lol!) My father's a retired firefighter/paramedic, bit even _he_ might agree w me that having *SIX* Smoke Detectors upon their ceiling, Greg! 😜🤣😉
@@anotherbibliophilereads Just a dumb joke! I bet it looks way cool, at night, w the lights on. You'll have to do an evening video, sometime soon . . .
I enjoyed this book so much I took a trip to London and visited all the Hawksmoor churches still standing.
If I lived closer to London I would have checked out the churches too. But COVID and a pond are preventing me.
@@anotherbibliophilereads I am only an hour away by train so just a bit more doable 😉

I bought Chatterton when I finished Hawksmoor. It might take some time before I get to it. I do need to read Boswell.
Fantastic review! There was a lot to like about the book.. it was definitely a great book for a buddy read! Lots of opportunities for discussion!! 💕
Thanks for being part of that buddy read.
Big fan of the novel. An intersection companion piece is Alan Moore’s From Hell that draws parallels with Hawksmoor and The Jack The Ripper murders.
I need to pick up From Hell.

I think you like it. I guess the ceiling lights do look like smoke detectors.
