Climbing Honeysuckle (Lonicera Serotina) & Other May Projects 🌺

  • In this week’s garden video I show you lots of garden jobs I managed to get done in between all the rain we had last weekend.
I’ve cut back all the prickly long blackberry canes which overhang into my garden over my neighbour’s fence.
I’ve drastically pruned my climbing ‘Santana’ Rose and I’m going to have one last ditch attempt at getting it to climb up my west facing wall. If that’s not successful I will replant it elsewhere in the garden.
Most of my tulips were flattened in the rain and so I’ve been round and removed all those that are no longer standing upright.
I show you how my Dryopteris Affinis and Polystichum Polyblepharum Ferns in Shady Corner are doing since I cut all the old fronds off about a month ago.
I have redesigned my tiny flower border for the very last time and now my painted snail is sitting on a bed of artificial grass alongside some pebbles and an unknown species of fungus!!
Woodland Courtyard has a few new additions, namely a 2 foot tall wooden mushroom carved from a tree, plus some other trinkets such as little birds, a China mushroom, plus hedgehog and bird flowerpots.
I found a 3-Tier Metal Plant Stand on Amazon which is 34”/84cm tall and each of the 3 shelves can hold 44lbs/20kg. I have painted my old wooden “Lazy Susan” and am using that as a table top and that’s where my new Acer Palmatum (Japanese Maple) ‘Bloodgold’ will live.
    Here is the link:
VASZOLA 3 Tier Tall Metal Plant... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CPXZQJY...
Next I show you how my new compost system is going, I’m very pleased at being able to re-use all my garden waste and now it’s in a far more accessible spot than it was before when it was all tucked away behind the Cabin.
For the first time ever I have cleared out the garage gutters which were completely filled with weeds. That’s usually a job Richard does but I’m trying to save him the trouble. Very messy, but surprisingly easy (not to mention quite satisfying) to do.
Finally I am moving my Climbing Honeysuckle - Lonicera Serotina - from behind the Trachycarpus where it’s been unhappily struggling for the past 2 or even 3 years, and replanting it in the smaller of my two obelisks in my Fountain Garden.
I think that’s it! Oh, and I also managed to weed 4 out of my 7 weeding areas.

Hey, I have a few suggestions for deterring snails/slugs from your garden. Diatomaceous Earth is excellent. It’s all natural, a soft sedimentary rock that crumbles into a fine white powder. It’s non-toxic. Coffee grounds, crushed eggshells, vinegar and salt all work. I’ve used salt around my pots to create a barrier between snails and pots/plants. They won’t cross it. I haven’t tried Epsom salt but I’ve read to use it like I use salt. You can also mix Epsom salt with water and spray the foliage for other pest. It’s mix of one cup Epsom salt to five gallons of water. I try to use all natural remedies for everything. I hope this helps. I use it and have never had many problems with snails. I hope your weather improves and you get some sunny weather. It’s been bad in the U.S. as well. I’m in the Gulf Coastal area and it has suddenly turned extremely 🥵 hot. Hopefully it cools off next week. I do know it’s been a trying Spring for us here and for my gardening friends across the pond. 🌞🌱🪴🌻💚 have a great week 😊

@heartofdixieprepping4797 that’s so interesting thank you. Does the salt upset the plants in any way? Trouble is we have lots of rain which would wash it all away a lot and I’d have to keep reapplying. I’ve kind of accepted the slugs and snails and I tend to just mostly have plants they don’t care for much. I can’t plant things with crunchy ‘celery’ type stalks. I only have 2 hostas now which I’ve put in the black raised pot which is right next to my new wooden mushroom, so far they haven’t found them 😂👍🩵🌺

    • @heartofdixieprepping4797
      @heartofdixieprepping4797 Месяц назад

@@TheEnthusiasticGardener yes those snails are pests. My neighbor use to go out every night with a flash light and pull them off of her flowers. lol so far I haven’t seen any this year. Salt does wash away with all this rain but it’s never hurt my plants, but I never put the salt too close. Another thing is-that I use pots mostly so no problem for me but the egg shells are great. They don’t like to go over it, or won’t but all of those things work. I have only one hostas left. And it’s pitiful. They just haven’t grown well for me here. I’ll look up what plants you can add to your garden that 🐌 don’t like as well. I can’t remember at the moment. I hope you are having sunshine today. We desperately need some. Everything is still so well. ☺️💚

The ferns you had up as Dryopteris affinis in the troughs are Polystichum setiferum. The fern in the ground just before you get to them is Dryopteris affinis, or one of that group of species - very difficult to tell them apart.

Hi Janette, so much rain? Even in Sydney we've had a week of rain and it's still going. Do you get to eat some of those blackberries? I love all the little friends in woodland courtyard, so colourful and cheery. I've been going quite well playing the weeding game in between the rain. Wasn't it Mary Poppins who said to make every job into a game. Thanks for that good idea. Maybe hard to find the fun in clearing the guttering but it must have been very satisfying picking up those long strips. The honeysuckle and the potato vine should look so pretty together. Hope you and Richard have a great week. Much love, Bron xx

But I did pick loads of them last year and made a crumble 👍 hope you’re having a great week ☺️🩵

I've told you before I don't have much luck with ferns.I only have a Japanese painted fern that barely grows it's probably 10 yrs old , but this year it's already looking better than it ever has. My Acropolis clematis is in its 3rd year ( leap year of sleep, creep, leap ) and it has at least 100 flower buds on it and it's only about a foot tall right now. I can’t decide if I want to leave him as is or paint him. I think most cottage gardens leave them as is….. any suggestions? Then I found the cutest ceramic rain boots. Adorable! They were $1.25 each at a Dollar Tree Store that we have here. Everything is $1.25. It was a dollar but inflation 😮after the pandemic raised everything.

Oh my, I do love the fungus thingy. It looks like a desert truffle (it’s not) but also looks like a Matsutake mushroom. But the Matsutakes are not in season yet. Is it growing from the stump from your tree. What type of tree was it? Another question….has it been there for a while or just coming up? I don’t remember seeing it before. But it’s very nice especially with the added rock. I love the “fake” grass. It looks real. I think you have nailed this area now. Snail is happy. I love fungus and have identified around a hundred different species on our land. The are so beautiful to me.

Hello there!!! I’ve been trying to find out what the fungi/mushroom thing is. My only guess is that it is Ganoderma, have you heard of that? As you can see it is rock hard. A couple of years ago Rich hammered away at it and chiselled it completely off and we threw it away, but of course it just came back. The tree was an Oak tree which we had to remove shortly after we moved in because it was huge and very close to our bungalow. And that was maybe 18 years ago. So then when we had the cabin installed about 8 years ago, the concrete base covered only half the stump and we have the other half of the stump left in that little “snail bed”. I don’t mind it at all, I don’t think it’s poisonous or toxic, Lotte never goes near it anyway. Interesting isn’t it? I’d be interested to hear what you think. Thanks for watching - you are my first ever fungi/mushroom expert garden friend 👍😊 hope you’re having a great week 🩵🌺

@@TheEnthusiasticGardener yes, I have two ganodermas in my house that I found on our land. They are different than what you have. But there are many species of this fungus. Yours may be one that I haven’t seen or read about or could be a growth from the oak stump. But I do know that they grow on oaks. I’ll research that. We have a lot of oaks here. The ganoderma fungus are absolutely beautiful and have medicinal properties. Mine are the reddish/orangish ones or a wine color. They get darker with age.
I’m not an expert. I’m a mushroom enthusiasts I guess. lol but I wish…..it is so much fun to hunt for them and do the research. Under the grown is an entire interstate for mylecim . These run for hundreds of miles…across states even….then under the right or I should say perfect conditions a mushroom pops up and blooms overnight. They are amazing. I have gorgeous mushroom pictures. I actually grew Lion’s mane last year and made a crab cake type dish out of some. It was fun but a lot of work.
