Planting Ground Cover, Herbs, Zinnias & A Miniature Ficus 🌸🌺

  • Finally, after so much rain here in Essex, England, the weather is beginning to warm up and the past few days have been beautifully sunny.
    Today I’m direct sowing Zinnia ‘Zinderella Peach’ seeds in both containers on my west facing wall. Zinnias like the heat and flower from July to September.
    I’m also planting a birthday gift for my wonderful friend Tina. It’s a miniature Ficus Tree (Weeping Fig) called ‘Kumani’ and it has a really attractive braided stem. Ficus Trees can either be an indoor house plant here in the UK, or we can leave them outside during Spring and Summer and take them inside for the colder months. They love bright light but best not to put them in the direct sun during the hotter parts of the day in case their leaves burn.
    For Woodland Courtyard I am planting up my hedgehog planter with Apple Mint (don’t plant Mint directly in the ground as it’s invasive and you’ll live to regret it!), and for my bird planter I have done gorgeous scented Sweet Basil.
    Finally, I am adding some lovely ground cover plants. All love full sun and heat. The Thymes can also withstand cold temperatures down to -10 Celsius (44 Fahrenheit). The Ajugas and Phlox can tolerate even colder temps of -20 Celsius (-4 Fahrenheit):
    Golden Thyme (CITRIODORUS Aureus)
    Thyme (Vulgaris Silver POSIE)
    Thyme (PULEGIODES FOXLEY)
    Ajuga (Black Scallop)
    Phlox (McDaniel’s Cushion)

    Hi Janette. Garden looking very pretty. Good idea to plant herbs and Thyme around your seat and have the gorgeous perfume. Love the Ficus with the twisted stem and fairy, what a lovely gift for your friend Tina. Happy gardening and looking forward to seeing your new seats courtesy of Richard 😁👍🧑‍🌾🪴🍪☕

      Good morning dear Penny and I am looking forward to the new seats so much, I think it’s been maybe 6 months without any, but of course fortunately most of that time was cold anyway so it worked out fine. Tina loved her ficus tree 🩵 the thyme smells lovely by the seat so I hope it and the others do well. Raining here this morning and I’m off to work very soon, but I wish you a really happy day ☺️💜🩵🌹

    Hello Janette, great selection of ground covers! I love thyme! The fairy you added to Tina's gift was the perfect touch. I will see if I can find a mini ficus, I love it! I miss seeing Lucy on your videos, and I was going to comment on that a while ago, but I didn't want to make you sad. I have a small dog and have had both cats and dogs over the years. They bring us such joy. Lucy will always hold a special place in your heart. ❤

    Hi Janette, I had an idea of what to plant by your shed where you said the soil is only a few inches deep if it's at least partial sun. You could plant sempervivum ( hens and chicks ) it has very shallow roots and it spreads quickly. I want to get out in the garden , but every weekend has been heavy rain here. I have a tub of spearmint, I absolutely love the scent of it. Hope the zinnias work out well for you 😆

    Oh your garden is so beautiful. I love the tiny tree you planted for your friend. I saw these videos on people in Africa and India, other countries as well. They release thousands of ducks in the rice fields and farms to eat the snails and pests. It’s so amazing to watch them. I never knew ducks could run so fast. They don’t need to fertilize because the ducks do that as well. I hope you sat in the garden and enjoyed watching the northern lights, what a show that was. Can’t wait to see the new chairs. Tell Richard to take it easy, we don’t want him stress out. Till next week, we enjoy your garden.

    Hi Janette, your garden is looking magnificent on such a lovely sunny day. So very hard to lose a little loved one. When I lost my darling Annie (a Lassie collie) I said I'd never have another pet. The saying goodbye is just too hard but one day a little stray kitten arrived and stayed and I love him so much. I love the newest additions to Woodland Courtyard. Snail is so beautiful he deserves a name of his own. Tina's little plaited ficus with the fairy sitting on the logs was gorgeous. So exciting that the chairs are on their way. I expect they'll be finished by next week. Good luck with the zinnias. Watching little seeds peep through and grow is so rewarding. That chair may be your favourite place to sit with all those lovely herbie scents surrounding you. Hope you and Richard have a great week and enjoy working on the chairs together. Much love, Bron xx

      Hello my dear Bron and yes, losing loved pets is very difficult isn’t it? She was a little bundle of loveliness as I’m sure your Annie was 🧡 what shall we call snail? I’ll let you name him, I think it’s a boy 😂 Tina loved her tree when I took it round yesterday afternoon. I’m excited for the chairs too, it’s been about 6 months I think without any chairs but at least most of that time was cold and wet anyway. At the moment we still have to varnish batch 2 of the slats and they take quite a few days to dry properly and by the weekend hopefully we can screw them all together, I don’t want Rich to overdo things though. Anyway, I wish you a very happy week (pouring down here this morning) 💜🩵

      Hi Janette, what about Lancelot. Snail is very handsome as Sir Lancelot was said to be, he does have a coat of armour to protect him and he lives in Woodland Courtyard. Not quite King Arthur's court but close enough. Of course, if you think Lancelot is too pretentious for Snail he could just be Basil or Herbie. You know him better than I do so if you've thought of a name that is more 'him' then I won't be offended if you choose that. Bron😊

It's pouring and has looked like night until now which is 1:21 pm. The winds are bad. We have trees and power lines down in part of our area. We lost power briefly a few times. I'm just praying for no tornadoes today. Looks like a rough week. But hopefully we will have some sunshine soon.

    Hi 👋 Janette, such a relaxing video after a long day🫶. Tina is going to love her birthday ficus, you did a beautiful job🥰. And the bird planter, so sweet. I have a similar one in blue but it’s a hanging one. Everything is looking great in the 🪴 garden. The chairs, wow Richard is really son talented, can’t wait for the reveal🙌. I did the same thing this past Saturday, I weeded a few flower pots and added soil amendments and good as new☺️, I potted up 2 🌹. I’m rooting for your zinnia seeds to sprout. Beautiful grow cover and nice trick either way the C to F conversion 😆it’s hard to remember for me🤣. Have a great week my friend🌿

      Good morning to you from a very rainy England this morning. Tina loved her little tree when I dropped it round yesterday afternoon. I’m looking forward to the chairs so much, we still have to varnish the second batch of wood slats and they take a few days to completely dry but then it’s just the screwing together. Might be able to finish this weekend, depends on the weather. Glad we have matching bird planters 😊 and I’ll let you know how the zinnias do and the ground cover. Well done for getting all your garden jobs done. Hope you have a really great week Elizabeth 💜🩵

      Good morning or should I say Good Afternoon 🌞 to you and Richard ☺️. I’m so happy that Tina loved her tree, it was so adorable and creative. Yeah the chairs are getting closer 🥳. Kick back and put your feet up if you can today on this rainy day and enjoy a cup of tea/ coffee, it’s much deserved, between all the plantings and weeding, you deserve a rest🫶. Enjoy your week as well🫶.

I love all of your projects. I am also thinking of planting more ground covers this year. I have a lot of ajuga and different mosses in my backyard in the shady areas as well as lamium. I would like to plant the creeping phlox and thyme too. Your present for Tina and your pots look lovely too! I love the way you pronounce basil. Also, I don’t think you know but my Chelsea Flower Show announcement was an April Fools joke!! I did confess at the end of that video and then the beginning of the next one. I’d be completely stressed out by now if it were true. Sorry to disappoint you but I couldn’t resist having a joke that day 😊 hope I am forgiven ☺️ I’m excited for the ground cover plants too, I’ll keep you up to date on those. Hi Janette, The apple mint sounds lovely, I might try that in a pot. I like the little tree for Tina. I have never seen those. Cheeky little slug, they get everywhere. I am using a nematode biological slug killer this year, as I am feed up with hostas being eaten. This seems to be working. 😊
    PS nothing to do with the garden, I note you hair is longer. It looks really nice.

    • @TheEnthusiasticGardener
      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  18 дней назад +1

      Aww thanks Pauline 😊 I thought I’d grow my hair as I’ve had much the same hairstyle for 4 years! But, it was easier to do when it was shorter!! Yes, horrible slugs! I moved my only 2 hostas a month ago, because of the slugs, they’re now in the black planter raised way off the ground (next to my compost alley) and so far they haven’t been discovered … not sure how long that will last but so far so good. I have to watch what I put down for slugs etc because of Lotte. She liked to eat the slug pellets I bought last time. Was supposed to be safe around children/animals but still, I’m sure eating pellets wasn’t good for her so I had to abandon that idea 😂 we need ponds with frogs to eat them. Hope you’re having a great week so far Pauline 💜🩵

    • @paulinecrispin121

      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  18 дней назад

      @suziebelle1959 (I love your name 😊). It’s so simple. I just peel off every leaf apart from the new baby ones which have recently appeared. I peel off all leaves lower down the stem. I’ll show you a link here to a video where Richard helped me do it for the first time. I must warn you - he was extremely rough 😂 but the Fatsias are so tough they didn’t mind a bit!!

      Good morning Max! Ours were second hand old ones too. Yes! You can buy a spray on Amazon which is called a Rust Converter Spray which reacts with the rust and turns it into a sprayable area. Over here it is made by Jenolite. Or, you can buy a spray paint (again Jenolite on Amazon here) which you can spray direct over the rust (called Directorust spray paint). Have a look on Amazon as I’m sure you’ll be able to find some. It works very well, I’ve used it before on other things. Let me know how you get on? Hope you enjoyed your morning coffee Max ☺️💜🩵💚
