Seed Pots from Newspaper - How To

  • Here's a quick video of how I make seed pots out of newspaper. They're quick, simple and cheap to make. I'm starting my seeds this year in these seed pots as well as soil blocks (I have a couple vids of making those too). Sort of an experiment to see if one outshines the other and also because I just like trying things out to see! Hopefully this will find it's way to all of you gardeners in time for spring! And as always thanks for watching!
    I own 100% of the audio and visual content of this video. Music clips are created for this channel by my brother-in-law Trey Harris.

    Best newspaper pot I've seen so far.

    You can also use toilet paper rolls (the inner cardboard tube). pack the soil straight in, place the seed and they disintegrate after awhile (and worms love cardboard). Nice tip, thanks for sharing.

      TheApothecaryAus Thanks! I might just have to plant a couple seeds in some and see how they do. I'm always up for trying a new technique:)
      Thanks for the comment and watching!

    Great info ..great video..thanks..I’m into hydroponics, which gets expensive..the setup etc., supplies, etc..now I can make my own seed starting pots, for my hydroponically sprouted seeds, with less expense..I can’t wait to start making them, and selling the plants at our local Farmers Market..(more profits for me)..thanks..

    Great job! Wheat flour paste would be my choice vs. Super Glue. Or just Crimp the top edge to hold it in place once it's off the form.
    Also, if you combined this with the soil pot plunger you made then you could combine the two! Pack the soil in the plunger, wrap the newspaper around, then plunge the soil into the newspaper. But I'm sure you thought of that!
    Keep up the great work, and have a better day!

    I made these paper pots from newspaper & they all got mold on them, mostly on the outside, but it was black mold. I'm now looking into simple soil blocks only. I've used paper cups, reused yogurt cups & used plastic cups, all of which I will no longer waste my time, soil or seeds doing that again. I'd never heard of simple soil blocks until recently, so that is what I'm looking into now. I wish everyone that tries the newspaper pot method great success, but unfortunately it did not turn out for me.

      You got the Mold because the Mold is already in your house.

      @@Pipping-Hot I'm sure you are right. I do have a mold problem. I'm convinced this house needs to be torn down and a new one built or moved to a different location on the property.

    Thank you for posting. I used tubes from paper towels last year. Also I set my seed starters on cookie sheets. I placed the tcookie sheets on a drying rack by a sunny window which worked out great.

    Not sure if someone else mentioned it, but wouldn't you be able to use your spoil block maker to also make your newspaper pots? It would be great to wrap the paper around and them tamp the paper down with the plunger portion!! Awesome!!!

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  8 лет назад +2

      +Lisa Johnson that's a great idea Lisa. I used just a regular piece of PVC for these just to show that you really didn't need anything special to do it. But I think that's a fantastic idea with the plunger being used as the tamper portion!

      Suburban Plantation oh man... mother's day is later but when you do get into spring and summer you do have a really wonderful growing environment for sure! Our great time is spring and fall and the middle of summer is basically keeping the plants alive through the heat..lol

    • @CiberWizZ
      @CiberWizZ 9 лет назад +1

      Adam Lawton Hey, yes, he said some people fold or use tape. I mean something non toxic that you can just put in the ground and forget it...

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  9 лет назад +1

      Miguel Rossi Seabra Thanks Miguel! As for the toxicity of the glue (cyanoacrylate), I'm no expert... but from what I understand, most all adhesives/polymers have some amount of toxicity, but mostly before being dry or cured fully. Once cured they generally pose less of a toxicity risk. Not to say that their aren't any potential toxins, but cyanoacrylate glues even have a history of use in medical procedures (although probably not hardware versions...lol). And when it comes to transplanting them I don't think it'll be too much of a hassle to pinch that section off... but we'll see :)
      But if you do have concerns then I'd probably recommend that you do the folding technique. It seems pretty effective as well but I just liked the ease and speed of the glue:)
      Anyways, hope that helps clear up any questions you might have. And as always, thanks for the comment and for watching:)

      You could also just use a pair of scissors to cut down the side of the paper when you're ready to plant. Either cut the vertical strip off that contains glue, or make a slit down the side and unwrap the newspaper entirely! Either way, you get a great/free seed pot and no worries about toxicity. I tend to like my newspaper seed pots to be as neat as possible without a lot of fuss in making them, so this idea is right up my alley! Hope that helps!

    Good video, although I wouldn't use pages with colour on them. Black and white newspapers are fine, nothing real bad in them, but once they add colour to the pages you start getting some not so fun chemicals. And super glue is fine I think, as people do use (the hard ware version) for closing wounds quickly, when you can't get stitches for whatever reason. Cheers!

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  9 лет назад

      Canadian Sasquatch Brewery Hey CSB... I just looked and most all are totally black and white but a few here and there have some color in them. Maybe I'll just cut those off during the transplant process:) BTW... my dad has been making quick batches of 'apple wine' recently. Kindof 'prison style'...lol But it tastes pretty good!

    • @Canadiansasquatchbrewery
      @Canadiansasquatchbrewery 9 лет назад

      It seemed to be the same stuff to grow on my peat cups. I remember, not to long ago, seeing on a commercial plant start operation video that it was harmless to the plant. Of course once you see it, do your research asap, never want to lose a batch of plants!
      I want to make one of your soil presses, but with 5 college classes, 25 hr work week, + running a 3 acre farm, i dont think ill find the time anytime soon. lol Happy growing.

      Matthew Metzler I think I'll give them a couple slits on the sides before I totally plant them just to give the roots a way out. But it's wait and see for now:) BTW... I got some of my seed from Terroir Seeds in Prescott... they have an interesting selection of unusual plants that do well in our hot and arid regions.

    Not sure if super glue would be OK for the ground, it's not biodegradable like a basic fold, seems pointless with the glue.
