Two ways to make Newspaper Plant Pots (the simple way + the origami method)

What do you do when you want to make newspaper plant pots but don't have one of those special tools? Learn to make them what what you have on hand. In this piece you'll learn how to make biodegradable plant pots using just newspaper and a few things you already have in the house. No need to invest in a pot maker.
I introduce two ways to make them. The first is a round type that takes less than 30 seconds. The second is a beautiful origami box style that will take a little longer. They stack together really nicely though.
I literally learned how to make these today so I'm certain that you'll be able to pick it up just as quickly. If you have any questions please leave them as a comment below.
Also, when choosing paper, use standard newspaper that's been printed in black and/or color ink. Both paper and ink are biodegradable. Avoid shiny paper.
These pots will last a few weeks before breaking down. When it's time to plant your seedlings out, you can pop the pot in the ground, newspaper and all.

I tried newspaper pots this season and they have worked out very well! The seedlings are growing well and it's easy enough to peak at the root growth and refold the paper. And then it all goes into the compost. I'm hooked. I love the different shapes and sizes you did. I'm going to expand my collection!

With the round pots, you can flatten the botton by flipping the jar and reinserting it to crush the bottom flat.

Pre-water the compost in a tray so it's just damp when you add it to the newspaper.

I did some round ones like this last year and they worked pretty well.
One easier way is to use those small square boxes like the one in which soap or some cosmetic comes in, and glue newspaper to it and make it a little hard surface so it stays in place too. Hope this helps.

Great video Tanya, the round ones look the best bet but the square ones would be nice to make in pretty paper for filling for gifts. Shame about the tomatoes, hope they make it! Always a challenge growing!

SOME QUESTIONS? Do you also put the plants in the ground with the pots? And uh, what about the ink? I see more people putting paper and cartboard even with glu on it in the soil. What is your opinion about it? Greetings from the Netherlands.
Yes you can plant the pots directly in the ground with the plants. Just make sure the paper stays moist and the roots will break through. As for ink, the vast majority of newspaper ink is made with soy and is biodegradable. Some isn't though so it's worth checking with the newspaper -- sometimes they'll have the information printed inside. Avoid shiny papers though -- it isn't printed with suitable ink.
Absolutely love this, yes this is a real problem when growing, I use biodegradable pots from our pound/dollar shop, you get about 20 for 1 pound/dollar. They you can plant the pot, but this is so cool! Im going to show my children this :)

Hmmm...can you just plant the pot in the ground as the newspaper will disintegrate????
id tear the paper off, or atleast most of it before transplanting, it helps the roots to not have to work its way tru the paper

The leaves on my tomato plants went the same way as yours and I think it was because they were cold, then hot then cold. I’ve also taken a few of the leaves off, I may need to take some more. I hope they survive. The variety are Shirley. 😊

Great video Tanya, do you have any advice on how best to water seedlings in newspaper pots, to stop the pots getting sodden and falling apart?
The round ones I've made are very durable under normal watering conditions. They're several layers thick which seems to be the trick. The square ones are doing okay too but are less sturdy.
You could use a tin can to roll the round ones, too, making it a bit safer for munchkins to do :)

Do you water these from top or bottom? If bottom then does the paper stays together?
if your circle one's bottom doesn't stay put-put a dot of water-soluble glue on it to keep them in place and cut a slit to keep that side thingy in place

How can you water these pots as water will tear away the newspaper? How do you manage? Please explain...
They hold long enough despite being wet. Try making and using them and you’ll see.
I'd put each one in a cheap baggie... I don't think they will hold up too well and leak everywhere. then re use the baggie next year...
I always feel a bit guilty using the double solo cup method, but as much as I like the thought of newspaper pots I'm a little concerned that he pH from the paper and ink may be detrimental for certain plants. Low pH problems is the reason why paper peat pots have sadly all but gone away. Also, mold can be a problem and newspaper is a GREAT substrate for mold growth.
could just make a paper mache version (dipping it in water and hydrogen peroxide). This will kill off any mold and you can leach out the ink leaving a wood pulp only. More time consuming but could actually be pressed into pots that can last multi seasons or broken down if buried and fully saturated before hand.

My local newspaper does not use soy based inks, so I can't use the newspaper in the garden. They use petroleum based inks. :(
Time to prompt them into the 21st century! ;) Use other newspapers? Have a dig around the local paper recycling bin for national and international papers.
Elizabeth Myers Maybe use normal thin paper? Ricepaper on a roll isn’t that expensive and it can take a lot of water...:) Less expensive as pottery, much more eco friendly as plastics...:)

My concern with using newspaper is the inks that are used. Do they not get absorbed by the seedlings/plants as they grow. Not so much an issue with flowers but could trace elements of the ink show up in the vegetables?
Modern newspaper inks are made of soy! They're perfectly fine to use in the garden 👌
