The music video Jay, directed by Julian Doyle, was conceived by Terry Gilliam & Kate Bush. The video features Canadian actor Donald Sutherland playing the role of William Reich and Bush playing the part of his young son, Peter
Pareil
Actually I would love to see this dude react to some of the old Donald Sutherland movies!
Wait… is this based on a true story?
@@sivadtube Yes
ohhh i knew he looked familiar
This is Kate at her best, and that's saying something! She showed her brilliance so often with her beautiful songs and innovative videos. This song and video is a wonderful example of her art!
Her songs transend generations. A very unique talent. And Donald Sutherland playing her father in the video.😁📀👍🎶❤️
For you young folks Keifers father .
@@kirbywilliamson2942 Donald Sunderland had a son! Boy I'm getting old...🤣🤣
Kate demands that Donald be in this video but his management said no because they didn't want him to profit while he was working for them so Donald said I'll do it for free! To work with Kate! !! What a legend! !!!
The young ones will know Donald Sutherland as President Coriolanus Snow from the Hunger Games.
I personally "followed" Donald Sutherland ever since I saw this very video, as a pre teen, in the 1980's.
Clicked SO FAST - love Kate Bush and LOVE this song - also the video was gorgeous - great story
Ditto.
I'm pretty sure that Kate wrote the script for the video with the great director Terry Gilliam (of Monty Python). Obviously inspired by the Wilhelm Reich story.
Same here, but then I always click fast for Kate Bush! Suggestion: Try "The Sensual World" for your next reaction, JV -- you won't regret it.
ruclips.net/video/4b2UsMruAwM/видео.html
Her father was a cloud engineer in the 40s for HAARP. YEP.
Killing it with today's choices. This is a 10/10 every day of the week. Wonderful artist. Her work is timeless and resonates with new listeners regardless of how many years have passed since it was released
I've been waiting for this one. Purely magical.
The song is sung from the perspective of Peter Reich, son of Wilhelm Reich. Wilhelm Reich claimed to be able to make rain with his cloudbuster device.
The narrative of the video is based on the book, titled A Book of Dreams, which Kate pulls out of Donald Sutherland's portrayal of Wilhelm Reich's pocket. She plays Peter in the video.
Spot on! Thanks for saving me the trouble of explaining that but it needs to be said
I believe it actually worked, at least once. The US govt threw the book at him, total judicial overkill, as they are want to do.
@@SvenTviking It wasn't his cloudbuster that he was imprisoned for. It was his orgone accumilators
@@drakocarrion- True, but that was an excuse. They wanted his cloud seeding technology which is used by many governments today. They weren't going to take on someone like him, but they WILL take his work. Old as the hills.
The whole "Hounds of Love" album is superb. Get it while you can Jayvee.
I bought mine second-hand in the UK and to this day is one of my most appreciated items.
The video and the song are based on a book called "A Book of Dreams" by Peter Reich (the kid being portrayed by Kate) about how his father was arrested (the psychiatrist and philosopher Willhelm Reich).
"Your son's coming out" has a dual meaning as well since Peter Reich is gay, something she definitely has in mind. Her songs always operate on multiple levels.
I was actually fortunate enough to grow up listening to Kate bush. My aunts and mom loved her and listened to her all the time. She’s still one of my faves and this is one of my favorite songs of hers. I love how experimental she is with both vocals and background music. Some of her songs are INSANE. And I love all of them.
Just one word describes Kate Bush, unique!
Kate Bush isn't just a singer of songs but a storyteller, fantastic.
She has such a magical way of turning literature into music….genius
Well put, she is unique, I've been a fan since hearing Wuthering Heights over 40 years ago!
Huge, Kate Bush fan. Have been since the early 80's. Tucked in my Walkman, her music went everywhere with me. On the train, bus, subway. On all my walks through the streets of the city. Her music became the background music of my life. It was magical time.
This video was filmed on a hill just 15 minutes down the road from me, White Horse Hill Uffington, such a magical place, there's a reason why Kate Bush and Donald Sutherland filmed the vid here!
This was filmed near where I lived and my parents watched the film being made.it was amazing.
That's brilliant and so lucky ❤️
Kate bush makes me proud to be english. She is unbelieveably talented and back then she was ahead of her time.
This is a phenomenal song. Her record Hounds of Love was groundbreaking. She's very unique and always creating different music.
A great cassette that I wore out in the 80s. I still love it in 2021!
@@AdrianDeVore that's excellent
@@michaelconnolly7681 Thanks! I've been listening to Kate Bush for 40 years since I discovered her when I was in high school. 🙂
A phenomenal song on a phenomenal album, Mind you Kate is..... well you know what I was going to say 😏
Hello Earth haunts me to this day
Kate Bush the legend. Thank you. 👍🎶
Seeing Kate in concert was one of the greatest musical experiences of my life. She is a Goddess! What I love about her most is that she doesn't just write about boy meets girl love stuff. She writes about all kinds of diverse things from washing machines to witches. Even when she writes about boy/girl love, she does it from such a unique angle. Kate is the most unique musical 'pop' artist ever!
Oh lucky you! Best wishes from Australia.
A classic. Her voice is beautiful ❤️
This is a masterpiece, song and video, but to really understand it you need to know the background story, of a child whose father was taken by the government and only came to terms with what had happened when he was much older. Takes a genius like Kate Bush to make something so beautiful out of something so sad.
The stroke of genious was to have Donald Sutherland in this video. The man can act! A true film legend. He delivers so much in what is a silent role. One of my all time favorite actors
35 years on & cloudbusting still sounds fresh & upto date👌
My friend, Google Wilhelm Reich and you get all the answers.
True story!
Thanks for the reaction to this awesome song!
The woman is simply a genius. One of a kind . This is my favourite song of hers but I love so many others too .
Couldn't have put it better myself! 👍
👍agreed
Never clicked so fast in my life! Cloud busting is based on a true story - the book of dreams by Peter reich about his father. His father built a cloud buster and the government threw him in prison for making it rain!
Also I sang my heart out to this at kates 2014 concert. Best night ever 😃😃
Kate plays the part of Peter. His dad is wilhelm reich. It’s quite sad really what happened to them both. And sad to think he built a cloud buster to make it rain and the government did what they did and when you think of the countries who don’t get a lot of rain….
I didn t Know it was based from a true story
@@sbent7143 yes it is 😊
It still is my favourite Kate Bush song and the music video complements the song so well. Donald Sutherland is a good actor. Apparently he didn't get paid for this one as he didn't manage to get a work visa.
@@nmtb1972 oh I didn’t know that! I did hear he had like a few days free as he was filming a movie so they managed to get him just before!
All of her songs take me on a journey. This song is so full of life. And hearing her sing, "I just know that something good is gonna happen" fills me with a sense of hope.
Thanks. This song. Your reaction. Wow!
The second I got the message I clicked. One of her most entertaining videos and a really great song
One of her greatest songs from an album packed with top tunes!
Kate is a true genius. I was lucky enough to see Kate on her Before The Dawn “tour” in 2014 - dream come true 💜
Omg that’s just amazing, I’m so glad you had that experience!❤️
My absolute favorite song of hers!
Mine too! It just about beats all her other wonderful songs.
My favorite Kate Bush song. This was the song that made me fall in love with her.
She played this as the encore to her first concerts in 35 years back in 2014. I was lucky enough to be at one. The entire audience sang along with the 'yay-ee, yay-ee o-o-h's at the end. It was an emotional experience.
Oh, your comment made me get goosebumps. You lucky man, I bet it was amazing to be there.
Now you need to do the Utah Saints song that sampled this "Something Good" - it was a MASSIVE dance hit in the 90s, and is how a heap of people in my generation discovered this song.
I remember being so fascinated with this video when it came out. Just a little girl I was, couldn't quite make out if I was seeing in Kate; an adult or a kid, girl or boy. And that tall man with his grey hair being taken away by those bad men. Pretty scary! Then the rain making machine.. Wow.. I can still feel that mysterious feeling I got from this song as a kid. Really special.
I mean I'm not the biggest Kate Bush fan, I never had any of her records though I heard many of her songs and like pretty much anything I heard from her.. but she definitely is one of a kind and a fascinating beeing on earth with a beautiful energy about her.
@I love, you should listen to her first albums, unbelievable how she wrote and composed
You 💖💖💖 and Kate Bush 💖💖💖 and your videos 💖💖💖. Love, memory, dreams, wishes, the whole life and human spirit is completly in one song of her.
Kate Bush is that rare unique talent. Try “How To Be Invisible (2018 remaster version)” for a taste of how she developed into a truly great artist. Talent to burn and creativity from left field that stayed relevant
I remember hearing Wuthering Heights when it was released, I've been a fan of this genius ever since.
Excellent choice. Not very often I hear that one mentioned. Certainly my favourite out of her later work. Very intense that break in the middle.
@@michelm306
Totally agree. 50 Words for Snow and Aerial albums are simply stellar
My favourite Kate Bush song ❤
Mine too!
Oh the lovely Kate Bush. This is from The Hounds Of Love album. She tackles subjects in her songs that other artists wouldn't even think of doing. Such a talented lady with so many great songs.
That whole album ‘Hounds of Love’ is a masterpiece 👌🏼
The video was filmed about 10 miles from where I live in South Oxfordshire England at the uffington white horse which is a chalk horse carved into a hill about 3,000 years ago and I saw a metal sculpture of the horse on a building next to Fenway park in 2007 when i was in Boston but it's been knocked down now.
I first saw this video on the big screen so to speak when they sometimes used to play a pop video before the main film at the cinema where I had gone to see Back To The Future.
I've never heard this before. I like her tone and vocals.
Please do yourself a favour and check out her back catalogue. A true musical genius. The compilation album 'The Whole Story' is a great starting point.
This is one of Kate Bush's songs that brings tears to my eyes, instantly... every time. "This Woman's Work " has the same effect. Stunning and moving.
Kate is the gold at the end of a rainbow...xx
Songfacts®:
Like Bush's first hit, "Wuthering Heights," this is based on a book. It was inspired by Peter Reich's 1973 Book of Dreams, which describes his father Wilhelm's arrest for contempt of court.
Wilhelm Reich was an Austrian psychiatrist who was trained in Vienna by Sigmund Freud. His work combined Marxism and psychoanalysis to advocate sexual freedom. In the 1930s, Reich came up with the concept of "orgone," a physical energy contained in the atmosphere and in all living matter. The "Cloudbuster" was a device he came up with to manipulate the orgone energy in the atmosphere, which would force clouds to form, bringing rain.
Hawkwind and Patti Smith have both released songs about Reich's concept of Cloudbusting.
The video, directed by Julian Doyle, stars Donald Sutherland as the inventor/father trying to get his cloudbusting machine to work.
In a 1985 interview, Bush explained she came upon Reich's book by accident. "I didn't know anything about the writer. I just pulled it off the shelf, it looked interesting, and it was an incredible story. It's written by Peter Reich, and it's called A Book of Dreams. It's about himself as a child, through his eyes as a child, looking at his father and their relationship. It's incredibly beautiful, it's very, very emotive, and very innocent because it's through a child's eyes. His father was a very respected psychoanalyst, and besides this, something that features in the book, he made machines called 'cloudbusters' that could make it rain, and him and his father used to go out together and make it rain; they used to go 'cloudbusting.' And, unfortunately, the peak in the book is where his father is arrested, taken away from him; he was considered a threat. So, suddenly, his father is gone, so it's a very sad book as well."
Bush spoke of the song in a 1989 Associated Press interview. "All of us tend to live in our heads. In 'Cloudbusting,' the idea was of starting this song with a person waking up from this dream, 'I wake up crying.' It's like setting a scene that immediately suggests to you that this person is no longer with someone they dearly love," she explained. "It puts a pungent note on the song. Life is a loss, isn't it? It's learning to cope with loss. I think in a lot of ways, that's what all of us have to cope with."
Bush had trouble pulling the track together until she came up with the steam engine sound that's heard throughout - courtesy of bassist Del Palmer and a Fairlight synthesizer. She told the story in a 1985 radio interview: "That did all fall apart over a period of about ten bars. And everything just started falling apart, 'cause it didn't end properly, and, you know, the drummer would stop and then the strings would just sorta start wiggling around and talking. And I felt it needed an ending, and I didn't really know what to do. And then I thought maybe decoy tactics were the way, and we covered the whole thing over with the sound of a steam engine slowing down so that you had the sense of the journey coming to an end. And it worked, it covered up all the falling apart and actually made it sound very complete in a way. And we had terrible trouble getting a sound effect of steam train so we actually made up the sound effect out of various sounds, and Del was the steam. And we got a whistle on the Fairlight for the 'poo poop.'"
Bush wasn't sure if she interpreted Reich's story properly and was worried about the author's opinion of her song and video. She was relieved to get his approval. "He said he found them very emotional and that I'd captured the situation. This was the ultimate reward for me," she recalled.
This was used in a 2009 Austrian documentary on Wilhelm Reich, titled Wer hat Angst vor Wilhelm Reich? It also plays in a key moment of the 2020 Hulu movie Palm Springs ©️ Songfacts
Wow, that was so interesting, thank you. Best wishes from Australia.

An absolute favorite. Kate Bush is made of magic. Her storytelling is epic. Thank you for reviewing!!
Such an unique person... this is where the word "talented" was really for.... you get right into her songs, they are like short storys and the performance is always amazing, much more Kate please!

I adore Kate Bush.
I'm with you there.
@Luna Raven how are you doing? I knew a lot of people who couldn't stand her, but they were insane. ;)
@Luna Raven I wasn't introduced to her music until I was almost in college. '84 or so? Never really saw her videos until recently, lol.

Kate Bush is one of the most creative songwriters in the last 50 years. Always amazed.
Everything Kate does is unique and every song completely different. She is an amazing artist in the true sense of the word and transcends eras of music, her music will never date.
There's no one like Kate, she's pure genius. The Cloudbusting machine in the video was designed and constructed by the people who made the creature in the "Alien" movies. I highly recommend you listen to her perform this song in her highly acclaimed 2014 live shows, "Before The Dawn." Kate and the audience sing along blow the roof off the place (and listen to the ending applause): ruclips.net/video/Cj4ZTVNO_aU/видео.html
Just love kate bush, such a unique artist, a complete one off. The video based on a true story of a cloudbusting machine
Kate bush…..ouaouh !!! I love her so much, thanks to you to share her music Sir :)
There is more plot and emotion in this little video, than in a dozen Hollywood features. Kate really knew her craft, all aspects of it. Song, arraignment, vision. A tear still forms in the corner of my eye all these years latter, and I must have seen this video dozens of times and listened to the song hundreds.
P.S. don't let the bas***d win . . .!
Loved this since the first time I heard it, never has gotten old.
Great track. Love Kate Bush. Truly a great artist
Such bittersweet memories this brings. So long go and so far way.
This song grows on you with every time you listen to it. Still one of my all-time-favorite pop songs.
the harmonies in this song are something else
Love this woman since the 70's! She's amazing
You and me both!
Never realised that Donald Sutherland played the scientist and her father in this video. Love Kate Bush voice, so distinctive and one of a kind!
You just got to love a bit of Kate Bush 😁💕👍🏽🇬🇧
Oh-my-goodness. This song really caught me off guard, brought me to tears. Took me back in time to my early teens when I moved to my dad's in Oakland after my mom died. I forgot Donald Sutherland was in it - I think I've only seen the video once in my life (we didn't have internet back then. LOTS to catch up on! Weeee!). Kate Bush is such an amazing storyteller- with an exceptional operatic vocal range. And such a beauty too! I really love your reaction J. THANK YOU for playing this, and thank you to the person/people who suggested it! (Looks like whoever did suggested it for other RUclips music video watchers at the same time. Or maybe it's just a koinkidink?)
I forgot about this song, so when I saw this I first thought ‘oh my God’, and then I cried. It made me think about my son and how he is growing up and how close we are. It is a beautiful, haunting song
The man in the clip is donald sutherland. One of the greatest actors ever
Absolute zinger of a song, she was so different, so much talent bursting forth! Classic Kate, will never get a bad word from me! Oh and that voice.
It's a memerable video (and song) that's stood the test of time. I used to work at the hill where this was filmed and people would visit it because they wanted to see if for themselves (There are lots of other reasons too, it has a long history) and they would talk to me about it and the impression it made on them. That's the power good music videos can have!
When Back to the Future was first shown in the UK this video was the "B movie" so I saw it several times at the cinema, each time I went back to rewatch BTTF 🙂
My favourite Kate song.. total genius
This is loosely based on a real life scientist named Wilhelm Reich who actually built cloudbusting/rainmaking machines. His work was supressed by the government and he died penniless.
So sad. I was vaguely familiar with the story but not the ending 😞
I believe I read some of one of son Peter Reich's books excerpted in Rolling Stone back in the 80s, must've been. I recall he'd suffered some mental health issues due to the kind of casual experimentation with recreational drugs most of us called Tuesday. I used to have copy of Wilhelm's 'Mass Psychology of Fascism', had it for decades, but I've really been regretting giving it away the past few years.
Of course the band Hawkwind wrote songs about him, “Orgone accumulator”.
come on man you really think orgone energy and other pseudoscienc shit he peddled is real?
they put him in prison and he "suddenly" died there...just 2 weeks before he would've had his first hearing concerning parole..
I'm usually not a fan of music videos, but Kate Bush has always done them right. If you can check out Army Dreamers.
This song just builds and builds. Its like a march , a d more people join as it goeson. A wrk of art.
Great song , I love Kate Bush 🥰🇬🇧xx
Love her she's so diverse and creative. 'Army dreamers' is another great song!
Big fan of Kate Bush. Love this song and video.
I absolutely adore her voice 💕
The song is about the close relationship between a young boy (played by Kate) and his father who invents a machine that can make rain from clouds. The son is telling the story as an adult about his pain and loss of his father that he couldn't help when the government officials found out about his work and took him away. The song was inspired by Peter Reich's 1973 memoir, 'A Book of Dreams' based on a true story. Amazing song!
This song and video are masterpieces.
This is my absolute favorite Kate Bush videos! That's famous actor Donald Sutherland playing her father! She's just such a talent! League of her own!! Do more of her please!❤

My favourite Kate Bush song and video
How creative and clever is Kate?
FIrst time I heard this track was hearing "I just know that something good is going to happennn" on a Utah Saints cut.
The QUEEN!!!
This song reminds me of my dad and will make me cry every time I hear it. Amazing song!
This was probably my favorite Kate Bush song, thank you!! Next another great tune from that same album = "Hounds Of Love" please!
Sutherland did the video for free because they couldn't get a work visa for him in time. Donald said the first time he saw her coming out of her trailer she was "smoking". He said, "That could hurt your preformance" and she said, I haven't been straight since 78. He said he loved her immediately.
Fantastic song, with the utterly brilliant Donald Sutherland. Enough said.
