  • A step-by-step guide of the DSG to Manual swap of an 8P A3 2.0T quattro, which was never sold in North America as a manual. The basics of this swap can also be applied to other PQ35/PQ36 VW/Audi Chassis vehicles, including the 8J TT/TT-S and 8P A3 3.2/MK5 Golf R32 (substituting VR6 parts as necessary)

    Thanks for this video. I have a Manual Golf mk6 GTD that i'm planning on using as a donor to do this to a DSG mk6 GTD. The reason reason for not buying another manual or just driving this one is that it has 340k Km (210k miles) on it is getting tired, leaking oil and doesn't have the options i want. I want one with a sunroof as I had in my mk6 1.4tsi twincharged version. But i can't find any original 2.0 tdi 170hp versions with a manual and a sunroof in 4/5door. always a 3 door or a dsg with the sunroof.
    Now i'm looking into buying a dsg mk6 and doing this swap. As i am not a bodywork type of carguy, a gearbox swap would be easier than swapping roofs on a non sunroof one.

    • @carsonthepartsguy8751
      @carsonthepartsguy8751  4 месяца назад

      Short answer: yes, it’s possible.
      Long answer: it involves cutting and welding to modify/replace the rear floor pan, welding in center driveshaft support bearing mounts into the tunnel, replacing the rear subframe with a quattro subframe and diff/axles, replacing the gas tank with a quattro version, and wiring in the Haldex unit.
      The 02Q gearbox will bolt up to any VW/Audi engine with the 4 cylinder bellhousing pattern when used with an appropriate flywheel, this includes the 07K 5 cylinder engine (with slight grinding to the bellhousing on the transmission to clearance the timing cover)

      Get your parts from a manual TDI, preferably from the same model year, and start swapping pretty much. You'll have to review the wiring diagrams for the TDI, but it will mostly be the same as the swap I've done here. You just need to swap the passenger front axle as they are different between DSG and Manual on the FWD.

      Your best bet would be to find one of the swap videos for a B8 chassis Audi. This video is specific to the PQ35/36 chassis, which would be 8P A3, 8J TT, and the MK5/MK6 VW Golf/Jetta and some other transverse models. I don’t own a B8 and don’t currently have any plans of covering a swap on one. Again, sorry I can’t be of help on that one.

      @@sawyercrosby3710 Well, I know it’s going to involve raiding the Golf R parts bin. And you’d probably want to go aftermarket on the clutch, pressure plate and flywheel setup. All that’s left to figure out is coding and wiring. If you’re serious, my Audi-modding co-conspirator Matt and I have discussed doing this kind of work on the side out of his garage in Vero Beach. We can talk about that if you’re serious. 🙂

      @@carsonthepartsguy8751 i just retired down to the southern AL area. I've got a mk 7 golf r transmission and bevel box ready. Ill be acquiring the rest of the parts slowly, but I'm probably going to get an S3 sometime in the 2025 era....which year I'll feed once done. I've got to finish paying off my wife's Yukon then I can take this project on.
      Currently I'm also getting parts to do the AWD swap on my 15 GLI. But that project is going slow due to that is my daily driver to work currently. I'd prefer to get the S3 manual swap completed first then get back on to this...

    Nice video man. When I code my cayc ecu to manual 6 speed using long code helper the coding is rejected. Did you not get this problem?

      I did not. No problems recoding the ECU for my CCTA code NA-spec ECU. Your other option would be to get a tuner to reflash the ECU with a manual file.

      I paid $1150 shipped for the brand new gearbox, flywheel and clutch setup was $500 (got a deal) and the rest of the parts came from a wrecked MK5 GTI I bought for $350 and parted out. 😉

    Is this the same for a tdi?

    • @carsonthepartsguy8751
      @carsonthepartsguy8751  2 года назад +1

      It’ll have its own component differences, such as the clutch, PP and flywheel setup, but the basics of the swap are the same. If you’re swapping a FWD 8P A3 TDI from DSG to Manual, you’ll want the transmission, axles, starter, bolts and the aforementioned c/pp/fw setup a MK5/MK6 Golf/Jetta, ideally with the same engine code if possible. Then make the necessary wiring changes.

      @@Anthony-sr3if Look into recoding your existing ECU first. I was able to on mine, but not sure on a TDI. You also have the option of swapping a manual ECU in and having it adapted to your car by a dealership or shop with a factory scan tool and subscription to ODIS.

    Clearly, you pretty much need to be a professional mechanic AND have a lot of time available to study wiring diagrams and find compatible parts in order to do this. It's not just pulling one trans and installing another.

    • @carsonthepartsguy8751
      @carsonthepartsguy8751  2 года назад +1

      It’s the parts bin, and while I am a former certified VW/Audi Tech and a current VW parts consultant, I do believe this swap is within reach to anyone with good mechanical aptitude. It’s swapping parts out, no real fabrication required in this instance. I’ve laid it all out here, and if given the opportunity I’d gladly swap others like the 3.2 VR A3 or MK5 R32. Knowing what is compatible does help, and brand knowledge also comes into play - but a lot of enthusiasts already have that. The wiring diagrams weren’t hard to follow at all. But, if you want something bad enough, you’ll find a way. 🙂
