To the Dominican Republic

- It's hard to find a break in the strong winter trade winds, so I pick the best window I can see to get from Boqueron, Puerto Rico, to the Dominican Republic. Of course it's never just simple downhill sledding. We get caught in the doldrums on the lee side of Puerto Rico, then squalls and increasing wind and swell as we approach Luperon. Then we have quite the tricky entrance to negotiate into Luperon ...

Best line ever: it's Monday....no it's Saturday.
Makes me so jealous!
Monday? Saturday? Not original but somebody else called whatever day it was last week "Blurrsday".
a couple of weeks ago I spent the whole Saturday thinking it was Sunday, wasn't till I said to my wife as I went to bed that I had work in the morning that she told me it was Saturday, so I had a bonus day that weekend 🤣
“...I’ll figure that out when the time comes.”
I like your way of thinking...
Well Kevin, today is my first day of retirement, well ... I quit my job. Time to put some work into my SC31 and join you out there... going simple, going now.. I can’t thank you enough for the inspiration.
Congrats!
congrats
Sounds good!
You're living my dream.
Hope your not disappointed... But i don't think so.
I’m sensitive to calling her a “crate” even though I know it is with affection. She cares for you well; I was enjoying her happy neutral helm as you guided her upwind into PR. You work for her and she delivers, a fine relationship! Cheers to you and your Ruth Avery!
This channel is always fascinating.
I really like the fact that the boat has no motor and the dinghy you got to paddle. That's just me
yeah luv the "old school"
I just like that he has the skills to make it work.
Looked like that entrance into Luperon may have initiated a few sphincter fluctuations! Happy the passage was successful. Thanks for taking us along on yet another voyage, Kevin!👍
Yes indeed, there was some panic in that approach.
Another beautiful video Skipper and the colors are phenomenal in some of those shots. Always a pleasure watching your content it's amazing how casual and calm and in control you are. Looking forward to studying your departure from this last anchorage. Those tacks are going to most likely be interesting.
Nine seconds after you posted, I already hit that 👍
Just found How to sail oceans..and subbed. Thanks........
Well there's some real gems for you hiding in that back catalogue, enjoy.
Watching you row that dinghy reminds me of Captain Jack Sparrow. 😆 The dreadlocks are all that was missing. The sunfish was hilarious.
I like that boarding ladder
While other people panic about the Mona passage, tales of squalls etc..kevin is saying some rain is coming.. it all comes down to knowing how to handle your vessel, making sure things on board are ship shape. Then the passage doesn't seem so dounting. It's very similar to the gulf stream crossing and other much talked about crossings. There truly is no,perfect weather window. Great video.
I have nothing against fishermen, but for the life of me I can't figure out why some have no issue with putting out traps in the middle of an entrance channel. Imagine arriving at night and trying to motor in..... You could easily pick up that trap in the prop, and the next thing you know you're drifting into that hostile shore.... Good call to arrive there during daylight Kevin. Fair winds.
Probably for the same reason they put them right in the channels in Maine--'cause it's where the lobsters are. Yes, you have to be on alert, another reason for not coming in at night ...
@@howtosailoceans1423 and for not having an engine. 🤠
I'm afraid there's a fine line between the lobster fishermen and pleasure sailing. I have been the lobster fisherman, and had my markers cut by pleasure boats. I is frustating especially when your trying to make a living. Just my two cents.
A real sailor,
Ruthies looking great ! Cheers!
Earth friendly recycling system!! : )
That's a heart thumper at the entrance when I saw your sails loose the air, full with air. I'm guessing you would have drifted into that channel.
Frightful entry to Luperon. You amaze me with your sailing finesse
Heart was in my mouth approaching Luperon!
You gotta get your cheap thrills, as the late Larry Pardey used to say.
Thankyou, some mastery going in with the breakers nearby, I was edgy on my lounge chair
Love it, thanks again for your updates!
I'm flying, I'm flying! (I videoed a fast ride like the beginning of this video and my son had the nerve to ask me, "did you speed up the video?".)
It’s hard to beat the feeling of a fast reach
Love your videos.
I know it's nothing to do with sailing but it'd be interesting to see you go through the immigration and customs clearing in and out process, and go over the quarantine flag and courtesy flag protocols.😏
It was quite the process ...
@@hans-verhoeven
bureaucrats seldom do!
You parked Ruth Avery clear at the back of the lot, left you quite a row, lol!
Thanks for the great videos, stay safe!
I'd be nervous navigating that entrance WITH a motor! Great video, thanks!! Ron
It's a little dodgy, but doable.
Great video.
you are an amazing sailor and navigator
Thanks again for a great video.....
Great episode. Love watching you sail into yet another anchorage. 👍
Another great video.
Another great video Kevin. I was having a little anxiety as you were approaching the island but then I remembered you've done this sorta thing before.
I still had plenty of anxiety coming in to Luperon ...
Great fun to watch you do your thing. I really enjoy your channel.
Great video Kevin! Thanks
another great episode Kevin; always looking foward to the next one and checking my youtube subscription hoping for a new video ;-) I'd love to see how you solo handle all 3 sails + running backstay when jibing, especially in stronger wind conditions.
Nice video Kevin. ... always challenging the squalls. ... fair winds Pal ... cheers from Muros
Beautiful boat do people think she's a westsail? Also gaff rigged boats are the best looking sailboats.
I would suggest you put the spaghetti in boiling water. :)
Happy days. Good sailing enjoy the lack of crowds
Ayup another good one. always the maps and navs are great a little more on customs. stay at it. I gotta get me some t shirts
I know it's rolly when I hear your ship's bell sound.
Yes indeed.
Enjoyed the episode...thx! Andrew
Reminded me of Sailing around the south coast of Samoa , there's a lot of water spout' / blow holes along the coast .
Kevin, ever read all the Patrick Obrien novels? That series and your youtube are my too favorite sailing escapes while my boat on the hard.
Yes, I remember "The Far Side of the World" I think it was, great novel.
@@howtosailoceans1423 There are like 15 in the series, each one better then the next. I have an extra set. Next time you are in Chesapeake/Northeast reach out and I will give to you and buy you a beer. Your channel is my #1 sailing go to.
T-shirt came in the mail a few days ago, thanks!
Thanks for the support!
@@howtosailoceans1423 hey Capt! You still working the stock market ? How y’a feel about TSLA ?
Always enjoy your videos, thanks for posting.
Nice voyage!
I remember one time Bruce the guy that wrote the book ran aground entering Luperon. We all had a laugh.
You did well.
Was that Van Zant? That was probably before chart plotters. Inside the water is soup, can't see the shoals at all.
@@howtosailoceans1423 yes Bruce Van Sant .We had a great time cruising in the early 90s
Aye m8, so nice to see your sail handling and hear your confidence about how and when to do your doings.
The tune in the first part really has potential by having a lot of ’air’ in it. Leaving to the audience to ‘fill in’ with associations. 👍🏽 Great!
Thanks m8! And thanks, btw, for being a loyal follower of HtSO.
Standing by.
Hi Kevin. How long will you be in Luperon? I was there 2 weeks ago and will be there again in 2 weeks to buy a sailboat that is currently moored at the moorage there in Luperon. It would be great if we could meet up before I have to sail to Turks and Caicos!
Probably here from another week or so.
The auto subtitles get very creative sometimes 😂 sailing to Loop Iran
Let's go!
Not familiar with the term 'Fisherman's Reef' Does it mean easing your main sheets to spill some of the wind?
Precisely.
@@howtosailoceans1423 Thanks mate
A wee verse or two to pay respects to your never ending roaming, it tells the story of a guy who when deceased he's ashes was scattered on the ocean..
My bones drift upon the sea,
My soul lives upon the water,
The albatross keeps me company
And the rocking of the waves are my salvation.
I lay down and marvel at the stars
And wonder if there's a God above me,
Does he know I forgot to pray
If he does ,i hope he will forgive me.
In the clearing I see a silhouette
Of a promised land that know no pain or anger
I trim my sail and head for the shore,
When it disappears then I start to wonder,
Every night I dream the same auld dreams
Every night your face is in my slumber
I dream about the things that used to be
When the love we thought we had was so much younger.
My soul lives upon the sea
My bones live upon the water,
The albatross keeps me company
And the rocking of the waves are my salvation.
I have a musical version on utube somewhere if you want to hear it..
Nice!
I have been Reading some Webb Chiles and I sometimes think of you when I am reading his stories. Have you
ever done any southern ocean sailing?
Yes, been around Good Hope, but never "running easting down" in the high latitudes of the Southern Ocean, I stuck with trade winds where I could.
sailing without all the gear and computers and engine? Literally thousands of years. Sailing with all the gear and engine and computers? few years. Your way is much more proven. My wind monitor computer thing has never workd on my boat and people tell me how I have to get that fixed. I tell them how I miraculously find out which way the wind is comign from without it. Your way of sailing gets you much more dialed into boat and weather and makes a better sailor.
Great trip and I also went and listened to your music that you have I love it.
I'm impressed with your tender rowing skills
Cheers Gray Australia
Wearing my HTSO t shirt today, about to start commissioning on Pendragon in Baltimore. Are you coming back to the Chesapeake this summer? Great video, made me nervous going through that channel!
Hi James, thanks for the support. Hope to be back in Deltaville by May.
@@howtosailoceans1423 great love the refit videos maybe see you again in Baltimore
👍!!!
Ahoy!
I have inlaws in the D.R.
Say hi to Emily and Clark!
I don't see them around. Their boat is here though.
I'm consumed with jealousy.
Great video was the dingy one you made
Iirc from a past episode, the one he made got run over and destroyed by a power boater in the middle of the night, forcing him to go out and buy the Fatty Knees Dinghy. Believe the power boater's insurer paid out a few Gs in settlement.
No, the nutshell(s) are long gone, this is a Fatty Knees 8'.
Could you use your outboard motor on your dinghy to pull your sailboat into or out of a tight spot if there was no wind and favorable current . I have been wanting to try this on my boat.
Yes sir, usually tie if "off the hip" (on the quarter, aft) and use it as a push boat. Only works in flat water, though.
😍💙🌊
I want to sail my boat from California to Texas, you think that's a good idea?
You mean through the Panama canal? Should be doable with an engine. Getting from Panama to Texas might have you slogging to windward for a while.
Just wondering... How do you find not having any shade on deck? Bimini etc.
Tough when I have to be on deck all day, as in when coastal piloting. Otherwise it's fine, though I could use a small spray hood.
What size and make of dinghy you have?
Who watches the sailboat when you go shore? Do sailboats get robbed?
Miles and Allison offer a boat watch service, which I used when I left the boat overnight to go to Puerto Plata. For short trips ashore it seemed safe enough to leave the boat.
First! On Texas Independence Day!! State covid restrictions are ending here! Yippee!
We are a free people again.
relatively speaking, of course!
Didn't know it was Texas Day ... and I lived in Houston for two years.
Texans can now boil their water maskless! 👍
What charts are you using on the HP laptop?
Those are NV Charts. Couldn't get anything for OpenCPN covering the DR.
You have to change your filming environment, that constant noise of wind and boat moving is really annoying.
It bothers me to see that your boat its not tidy up :'(
The man just circled the northern half of the Atlantic, produced, packaged and uploaded videos and lessons for us all, negotiated a reef strewn harbor entrance under sail in an engineless boat, and your comment is that you are dissapointed with the condition of his boats interior... You sound like a wife.
