  • The Toronto Blue Jays just made a move that is being loved by some, and questioned by others. The Blue Jays have been searching for starting pitcher depth for several weeks now, even more than getting another big bat. We talked to Shi Davidi recently on our podcast who agreed with us that the Blue Jays are prioritizing starting pitching depth. And that manifested itself into Max Scherzer. If you’re wondering why the Blue Jays signed a 40 year old pitcher at the end of his career in Max Scherzer… well. Here’s why...

    Yes, he’s had injuries; and Yes, he’s 40 (turning 41 later this year).
    But even in these later years, he has shown himself to be a “workhorse” pitcher, he knows who he is, and if he didn’t believe he has something left in the tank he would have retire already.
    The man may not be the Ace pitcher anymore, but he has experience, intensity, and a level of professionalism which would be felt by everyone around him.
    Honestly, I’m happy to bring him in, and let’s give him a chance to show what he can do.
    Mad Max is here! And the Fury Road….. now runs through Toronto!

    I think some things need to be clarified. Max Scherzer was dominant as recently as 2022.
    In 2023 he was worth 3.2 WAR and had a 3.77 ERA in 27 starts.
    Last year was the first time since his rookie season that he didn't make at least 23 starts (not including the covid season of 2020).
    Even his stats over the last 2 seasons make him a top 3 starter on nearly every team in baseball.
    Lastly; Charlie Morton and Justin Turner both were effective last year at 40+ and have consistently been good for most of their careers. Justin Verlander didn't do well last year but had arguably his best season ever in 2023 at 40.
    Other players that are still ranging from good to excellent that will reach 40 this year or next are David Robertson, Adam Ottavino, Carlos Santana and Daniel Bard.
    Max Scherzer is always prepared and always a bulldog on the mound. I'm super excited to get to see him pitch all year for Toronto and I know he's going to be awesome!

      Randy Johnson had a perfect game at age 40. Quite a few pitchers have had success in their 40s, so it's funny how a lot of people seem to think that age 40 is a death sentence for MLB careers.
      I've also noticed that a lot of people have been fooled by misreading Baseball Reference, believing that his stints with the Rangers and Mets in 2023 were two separate, full seasons. I've seen several people quoting those as his 2022 and 2023 seasons.

      Simply isn't happening. Tax allocation is already $250 mil. That's a $10 mil tax bill. Alonso, who already isn't a great fit after the Santander acquisition, takes that tax allocation up to, let's be conservative, $273 mil. Vlad's current tax hit is $28.5 mil. He turned down $340 mil. If an extension happens his tax his will likely raise by AT LEAST $10 mil, taking the Jays to $283
      Those Alonso and Vlad estimates are conservative
      Jays can afford it. But they don't want to pay the taxes that would come with a payroll over $283 million. Closest team I can find as a comp with calculated tax bill, Mets at $291 mil, est tax bill of over $32 mil

      He was lifted from games in Texas and didn't throw fits; nor did he when with the Mets. He hasn't taken off his pants since the Nats. He really has calmed down the past few years. But he is really, really valuable with the youngsters on the team and most people don't consider that as part of the equation.

  • @TheChuck181
    @TheChuck181 6 дней назад

    I think you’re wrong. His primary motivation is simply to go out having a solid season. He doesn’t want last year to be the end. Secondary is playing for a competitive team which is why this close to spring training he is ending up on the Jays because we are a potentially competitive team and we’re actually offering him a contract and a spot in the rotation. It’s simply not just some wildly competitive veteran only coming back for one real shot at a championship. Scherzer isn’t delusional. A 2025 Jays team that makes the playoffs and wins playoff games would be just as surprising to him as us.

    Since Max was 35 he has had a WHIP of 0.820 to 1.115 a year ago, and still averages 9+ strikeouts per 9 innings. You could not do that if you were washed up. Jays should keep Y Rod in the starting rotation and go to a 6 man rotation. Bassitt and Gausman would like that and Max would last longer until he runs out of gas. By then Alec Manoah would be ready to resume his young career.

    We were the only team to be negative WAR from pitching in 2024. -0.1.
    Max has had multiple years of ERA+ higher than any of the other starters have ever had - all after he turned 35.
    No guarantees, but even if he pitched 100 innings, you're damn sure they'll be good ones.
    People focus so much on the offense, which was 3 WAR better than the 2016 playoff team and that's without Bo, Santander, Gimenez and whoever else they add.
    This offense/defense will probably be the best we ever had if they perform to expectations. (In terms of WAR)

    • @mcfarlac1
      @mcfarlac1 6 дней назад

      The Jays scored 671 runs in 2024 (23rd in MLB), and scored 759 runs in 2016 (9th in MLB). The offence in 2016 was better.
      I agree with everything else. This team has a legitimate chance to make playoffs this year. Especially if we add Alonso, and get a good season out of everybody

    • @eshep71
      @eshep71 6 дней назад

      @mcfarlac1 according to WAR(baseball reference) we had 27 war from the lineup/defense last year. I know it was heavily defensive in comparison to other, which is hard to truly value.
      The thing about WAR, is that there is only 1000 to go around. All WAR is good. 33 per team in average.
      Teams in the 43-50 WAR range (off/def/pitch) generally make the playoffs.
      In 92,93, 2015, 2021-23, our off/def war was remarkably similar. 30-33.
      The pitching was anywhere between 13-20+.
      We were only 5 o/dWAR off of the pace last year. Bo/Gimenez offers 5 each and Santander offers 4. Over 10 of which should be offensive. Theoretically we could hit 35+
      Pitching went from 13 (with the best rotation) to 0 WAR.
      Because the offense isn't as potent as it was , we need the pitching to rebound and protect as many runs as possible.
      In 2022, we had 2 starters with 5+ era. We probably can't bury that again

    • @eshep71
      @eshep71 6 дней назад

      @mcfarlac1 and to be honest, in 2021 we had like 32 o/d war and 20 pitching. 50+ total and missed the playoffs by a game lol
      So the math isn't always perfect, but it's a solid foundation to follow and makes sense of the Gimenez trade (because he was the worst hitter and still had 2 oWar, not to mention the D.)
      I don't blame anyone for not trusting the math the same as me. Lol

    • @mcfarlac1
      @mcfarlac1 6 дней назад

      @@eshep71 I guess I just look at WAR on an individual player level, especially this time of year. It gives a rough way of comparing a position player to a bullpen guy or starter.
      If I was to compare teams I would use run differential or win totals. Your way is another way of looking at things.

    • @eshep71
      @eshep71 6 дней назад

      @mcfarlac1 I respect that. I use those too. But Even then, we have to have added (with Bo recovering) upwards of 150+ runs.. on the conservative side.
      With a shut down staff, that run differential changes.
      We were 6th in baseball, 3rd in the AL(NY,Bal) in non pitcher WAR... Which is kinda impressive considering how bad it seemed (and it was well below our expectations)

    I'll tell the truth: we have a misguided front office, AND most of the holes in this team aren't really plugged yet. Scherzer is not the silver bullet, and more of an overhaul in the team can get us closer to being what we once were. Mad Max is a legend, but he's had injuries lately and I think that'll reflect, so we should've been more aggressive and got Shanahan + Atkins the pink slip already. Replace people up and down who need replacing. Anybody who thinks Scherzer is the answer to our woes needs to think again - and I'll be honest, Toronto needs a new identity.

      Their pitching is excellent but they're really going to have to get lucky with Bellinger, Goldschmidt and some of the younger guys.
