Sometimes Howard Keel was awkward as an actor, and one could tell that he was a singer-turned-actor. But at times, he really excelled. He was good at putting fear into the heart of J.R. Ewing. He was one of the few people who could do it. He did it in this scene, and he did it when he told J.R. that the price of oil was going down and he was sitting on millions of barrels of oil. His delivery here and in that former scene were perfect.
It didn't make sense that JR was such a master strategist and yet he routinely antagonized people that could do him serious harm. I guess you could argue that the JR character's insecurities overwhelmed his intelligence but still, it seems like such a smart guy would learn his lesson at some point. Having said that, Hagman and, especially, Keel both do a great job here.
Miss Ellie as played by Barbara Bel Geddes would not have allowed J.R. to talk to Jamie like that. She stood up to Jock when Jock objected to her giving Southfork to her brother Garrison Southworth.
Miss Ellie is right not J. R. Can not throw any one out. Not his home !! That’s why he did not inherit South Fork. Clayton is right too. J.R. Should have seen that coming I sure did.
In my own way I felt kind of sorry for Jenilee Harrison. She comes in replacing Suzanne Somers whose firing from Three's Company was the "ugliest" in terms of TV at the time. Then she plays Jamie Ewing the "outcast" relative. Some Family Members don't click. Vicky Brandon on Guiding Light, then Dennis Parlato briefly replaced Michael Zaslow as Roger Thorpe on Guiding Light. As for what JR said to Clayton about Ewing's Business, he's right to a degree. When you are the Second Wife/Husband of someone, you are tolerated, but never fully accepted.
Honestly, I was re-watching 3s Company a while back and I realized that when they demoted Harrison to a supporting role in Season 6, Cindy was a hell of a lot funnier than Season 5 as a main character. They should have kept her for Seasons 7 and 8 as that funny side character.

Although I liked Jennilee Harrison. I always thought the character of Jamie Ewing was irritating and annoying. Donna Reed was a fine actress but she was too weak for a role that was pretty much set in stone by Barbara Bel Geddes who was by far a much stronger actress for this role. I really liked Howard Keels acting. He was a class act.
Harrison was a bad choice to portray this role. She was fine on Three's Company. Jamie reminded me too much of Pam - always whining, nagging, lecturing and acting morally superior to everyone else. Oh, and don't forget, she was an oil industry "expert" because she worked with daddy on an oil lease in Alaska. Then she "conveniently" (like Pam with Wentworth Industries & Wentworth Tool & Die) had 10% of a $2 billion company handed to her.
Jennilee Harrison meant well but to go from Comedy to Drama isn't as easy as it looks. She even knew that she couldn't fill Suzanne Somers Shoes. She's done well as a Fitness Mogul. At that time, the show lost so much pizazz. It kind of reminds me of when they bring in new folks to an established Show. Cousin Oliver, The Brady Bunch, Cousin Pam, The Cosby Show, Jeremy The Foster Child on Eight Is Enough. I think without realizing it, JR was subconsciously punishing Jennilee through Jason or even Lucy through Gary & Valene. I wished Valene could have talked to Jamie and told her how rough she had it as Gary's Wife back in the day.
Barbara Bel Geddes was definitely not a stronger actress than Donna Reed. They were very difference but neither one were really ever top tier actresses.

Donna Reed was a great recast. She signed on for 2 more years, but Barbara Bel Geddes changed her mind the 1st year Donna Reed was on the show and wanted to come back. They let her come back! Donna Reed sued the Lorimar and won what was owed to her for the remaining 2 years of her contract. Good for her!!!

Considering all the women JR went through, it's amazing how little he seemed to know about them. Did he REALLY think he was going to diss Jamie and she would just go away quietly? Especially considering she was walking around with that document splitting Ewing Oil into equal shares. Clayton got it. He KNEW she was going to turn around and drop the hammer on him. It didn't occur to JR until Clayton brought it up.
Mary Martin would have been a better choice, but imagine the fireworks when BBG decided to come back the following season. Larry would have his real-life mother against one his favorite co-stars, Barbara Bel Geddes!

JR reminds me of my oldest and youngest siblings. We 4 in the middle have ad to endure it. Time flies by and I have seen other big families change as the spoiled ones lose their power, as the parents quit being manipulated.

When I think of Barbara Bel Geddes As Miss Ellie #1 and Donna Reed as Miss Ellie #2 it reminds me of The UK Soap Opera EastEnders. In the 1990's Daniella Westbrook played Samantha "Sam" Mitchell #1, and then Kim Medcalfe played Sam Mitchell #2. Kim tried but she couldn't hold a candle to Daniella. Sadly enough Daniella is battling Cancer so she may not be able to come back.

Donna Reed's version of Miss Ellie was never good at being angry or putting anybody in their place. This version literally let J R walk all over her during that season.
The only thing that the Reed Miss Ellie was better at was her clothing. With Reed, producers could dress Ellie as the multi-millionaire she was, instead of wearing a frumpy, burlap sack with flat shoes.

Any Dallas remake from now on will never succeed and a huge waste of money. Any copy, would always be tenth rate. Dolly and Kenny couldn’t play those parts. Hell, Meryl Streep couldn’t succeed.. The reboot died the minute it aired and was buried, the minute Larry Hagman/JR Ewing died!

No, she was definitely a Ewing. They pretty much dropped the possibility of her not being a Ewing very early on, so they could focus on the fight between the Ewings and Cliff/Jamie for control of Ewing Oil.
Donna Reed was a wonderful actress but she could never fill the part of playing Miss Ellie.

When I think of Barbara Bel Geddes As Miss Ellie #1 and Donna Reed as Miss Ellie #2 it reminds me of The UK Soap Opera EastEnders. In the 1990's Daniella Westbrook played Samantha "Sam" Mitchell #1, and then Kim Medcalfe played Sam Mitchell #2. Kim tried but she couldn't hold a candle to Daniella. Sadly enough Daniella is battling Cancer so she may not be able to come back.

Donna Reed was such a classical actress, she acted as though she was in a big-budget movie of the fifties in her delivery. "I want you to apologize " can't see Barbra Bel Geddies delivering that line. Both great actresses though
Donna Reed's version of Miss Ellie was never good at being angry or putting anybody in their place. This version literally let J R walk all over her during that season.
The only thing that the Reed Miss Ellie was better at was her clothing. With Reed, producers could dress Ellie as the multi-millionaire she was, instead of wearing a frumpy, burlap sack with flat shoes.
redletter2008 : Donna Reed was a way more glamorous Miss Ellie true but I also thought that she was a great actress who did very well in that role!! The way they did her regarding going back to the original Miss Ellie was dead wrong

grecosgreece daz the reason Dallas was the outrageous hit it was, was because of the original actors who portrayed the characters.. Any Dallas remake from now on will never succeed and a huge waste of money. Any copy, would always be tenth rate. Dolly and Kenny couldn’t play those parts. Hell, Meryl Streep couldn’t succeed.. The reboot died the minute it aired and was buried, the minute Larry Hagman/JR Ewing died!

Even though Donna Reed could not fill Miss Ellie’s shoes, as she was not a great actress, however she did dress like more of a wealthy woman with a far better wardrobe than what they allowed Barbara Bel Geddes wear.
Donna Reed aged well looked amazing in that red dress. So elegant and pretty. But not right in this role.
Why did they replace Barbara Bel Geddes?
If this was early on, Donna Reed taking over Miss Ellie would not have been a problem. But 8 years in, it don't work.

No, she was definitely a Ewing. They pretty much dropped the possibility of her not being a Ewing very early on, so they could focus on the fight between the Ewings and Cliff/Jamie for control of Ewing Oil.
