No way could a Jock Ewing ever have a wife other than Ellie. He’s intimidating and powerful. JR scares a whole state with one phone call...doesn’t even try to talk back to Jock. Bobby stands up to Jock, but even he knows when to quit. Ellie isn’t afraid of him, and a man like that HAS to have a woman like that, or their egos will run rampant
I wish I knew as a kid just how lucky we were to have Barbara Bel Geddes on our screen every Friday night. There was nothing more powerful than throwing Bel Geddes and Larry Hagman against one another in a scene. Beautiful writing for this scene.
One of the things I miss most about my mother is when she told me off like this. There is something incredlbly purifying about being told the truth by a person who loves you unconditionally.
JR was a real bastard but Larry Hagman played the part so well that he also gave him a human quality that could make the viewer feel empathy for him from time to time. That's why the fans loved to hate JR.
That's what made him such a memorable character. Also if Dallas had one thing in common with UK Soaps is that there's always a Scene with Liquor. Either at Home, or the Neighborhood Pub whether it's on Eastenders, Coronation Street or Emmerdale. I call this The "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof Salute". Remember when Big Momma said to Maggie "When A Marriage Is On The Rocks, The Rocks Are There Right There!" Miss Ellie bought it into this Scene and as you know she Played Maggie on Broadway in one of the earlier productions back in the day.
When Larry Hagman played the lovable, bumbling, fumbling Major Nelson on "I dream of Jeannie" people didn't watch the show because of him, they watched it for Barbara Eden. (In my opinion) her and Donna Douglas (Ellie May Clampett) were 2 of the most beautiful women in the world. Having said that when Larry Hagman became JR Ewing his popularity with the females literally went through the ROOF. I heard a female make the comment that the reason he was so popular among the women was because even though he was a PRICK, and ruthless he was very powerful. Women are attracted to that kind of personality, not so much the placid, easygoing types. They love the POWER, and the materialism. That is why so many are willing to put up with the Machiavellian personality traits, and the cheating, and knowing that they have their eye's on other females.
Thank you for posting this! Barbara Bel Geddes- she had a matronly way, but a real power about her, and was a force of nature. She could stand on her own, and I for one wouldn't want to be on her bad side, any more than JR's!!
JR's hypocrisy knew no bounds. Whether as you said in interfering in his brother's marriages or calling Sue Ellen a slut while he himself starts sleeping with other women and out right neglecting her.
Jock knew how wicked JR was but Miss Ellie was the only one who called him on it. In The Old School Books after JR Bankrupted their Associates, Bobby told him how much trouble he was in and JR said "I don't need you to protect me Bobby" but Jock had a premonition that something bad was going to happen and he got shot.
Missy Ellie is a prime example of a parent judging her son for being exactly the type of person his father and she raised him to be someone without morals who doesn’t feel guilt.
Listen to the scene carefully. She let JR go to be raised solely by Jock, and he turned JR into a ruthless robber baron with no soul. That’s why he is an even more ruthless version of Jock. The opposite was true of Gary. Jock had almost nothing to do with his upbringing, and he turned out to be weaker than dishwater because of it. Bobby had attention from both, so he turned out to be a balanced person who can reign in JR. That’s the underlying theme of the entire show while Jock is alive.
very good scene btw miss.ellie n jr....solid writing, directing n delivery....dallas was great back it its early years...just was not the same after jim davis (jock) died....just seem to go left from there n the casting was lighting in a bottle.....miss.ellie n Jr actually favor each other as did jock n bobby......

It's interesting how people who grew up like this can turn out different, like Bobby and JR. My dad is like Bobby even though he is the oldest son. He always put family before money, thank God
No doubt about it, JR was a crappy husband to Sue Ellen and not just the adultery. I remember that first episode where Sue Ellen tells Ellie how Jock was constantly in her face as to why she was no pregnant yet and Ellie says she would speak to him. It should have been JR, Sue Ellen's husband. who should have been the one to tell Jock to back off.

On The Bold & The Beautiful John McCook who plays Eric Forrester was only Seven Years Older than Ronn Moss (Ridge Forrester #1), and on The Cosby Show Sabrina Lebeuf (Sondra) is only Ten Years Younger than Phylicia Rashad (Clair).

Ellie was RIGHT. They have similarity in terms of business but Jock was different to JR in terms of Family. Jock was a much better man than JR. Jock was much more loving and respectful to his wife.
No wonder Sue Ellen was a drunk the family was always drinking. Stop by the office and sign a deal, lets have a drink. Before dinner, lets have a drink. All they ever did on that show was drink booze.
Yes, on UK Soaps most notably Coronation Street, Eastenders, & Emmerdale the bulk of the Action takes place at a Bar. The Rovers Return, The Queen Victoria aka The Vic, and The Woolpack. They could have mixed Non Alcoholic like Cranberry & Seven Ups, Shirley Temples, or Cream Soda.

God Miss Ellie really realizes now that "giving JR To Jock" as a littl eboy was a very bad thing. As for his love for his Sons, he loved them all but never equally. Bobby was the apple of his eye, Gary reminded him too much of Garrison and Aaron Southworth, who ran or died and JR was the "Heir Apparent" to the Ewing Throne and as the "Eldest" he was supposed to be a proper example to his Brothers. I also feel that JR felt that Jock, Miss Ellie and Bobby had no place to tell him how to run his personal life. Deep down he only married Sue Ellen because Jock put so much pressure to marry the "Right" woman after the debacle with Valene.

These episodes were the best with Jim Davis as Jock and Barbara Bel Geddes as Miss Ellie more than once Miss Ellie had it out with JR over Sue Ellen and I don’t blame her for doing it.
J.R. never received the nurturing he needed at a young age. That’s bad parenting. That’s not his fault. Jock created and raised an aggressive, ruthless, unemotional alpha male. It’s like he had no mother or feminine qualities.

crassyfrake The problem I had with that is that some of the other characters weren't much better than JR, only they were less overt about it. Bobby, honestly, often let his fists do the talking a bit too easily. Jock was often an ass, Pam could be one hell of a bitch when she wanted to. Even Ellie, like in this scene, could be really cruel. But while JR gets called out on every single thing he did - and some he didn't - the other members of the family are rarely called out for their own behaviour. In a sense, its very unfair treatment. Ares99999 " Your father has redeeming qualities." Umm ... not really. The apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. Yes JR is pure evil. So was Jock. Miss Ellie has her evil moments.
Jock's approval meant the most to J.R. than anything. If Jock had the same one on one with J.R., it would've made a lot more of a difference. At least he'd have been home w/ Sue Ellen more and more discreet about seeing other women.

And honestly, JR worshipped his parents. If he turned out that way, its because Jock and Ellie let him turn out that way.

" Your father has redeeming qualities." Umm ... not really. The apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. Yes JR is pure evil. So was Jock. Miss Ellie has her evil moments.
srb9 I completely disagree that JR is 'Pure Evil'.
Jock's approval meant the most to J.R. than anything. If Jock had the same one on one with J.R., it would've made a lot more of a difference. At least he'd have been home w/ Sue Ellen more and more discreet about seeing other women.
