The Hollywood Movie made with a DJI Pocket 3 camera

  • Cinematic is the big buzzword nowadays in the camera video photography channel world, as is the DJI Osmo Pocket 3, so of course its only a matter of time until the 2 terms are combined into RUclips clicks. Cinematic does NOT just mean blurry backgrounds and color grading! Cinematic does not mean smooth camera moves and LUTs. Cinematic does not mean nerds pretending to be actors. Cinematic means SO much more! The Pocket 3 is a good camera for RUclips but don't waste your precious time trying to prove it's anything but. If you're going to spend a lot of time and effort to make a real movie, then use a freaking real camera!

    Absolutely correct, Markus. There are people that see dozens of rock concerts every year and don't even know there's a difference between a bass and a guitar. My favorite part in El Mariachi was the bus scene when you can accidentally see Robert Rodriguez
    in the rearview mirror. He's standing there holding the camera all by himself in this big action scene. That is as "run and gun" as it gets.

      @@nicksavage4763 it was 1992 DUDE! It was 16mm film, and Robert could barley affort the film to shoot it, it was expensive! But BECAUSE it was 16mm film, it could be remastered to 4k in pretty good quality. Analog video back then could have never delivered that. And BTW: dont talk BS if you have no clue, just a good advice.

    • @zl8315

      actually it was 16mm film ( though I can't recall if it was super 16 or not) . 1991/1992 was a little too early for digital though analog video had been around in low budget features since the early 1980's ( "Julia and Julia " being the first analog HD video feature in 1986/87). "Windhorse" ( the first Digital Feature) was shot in 1995/96 if I remember correctly at standard def with a betacam.@@nicksavage4763

    Agree, what camera you use is now just used as marketing material for camera companies and no more than that. The average viewer won't know or care to know whether something was filmed with an arri, red, sony or an iPhone as long as it looks good. Cameras have become so good that you can get 35mm film quality image in phone cameras. Just choose a camera that fits your budget and fills you requirements.
    Side note: Young Markus looks very much like Ben Stiller

Iv tried to make some of these little cinematic scenes with action cameras. The real work in it is getting your lighting framing and audio together. The camera itself is the easy part.

    I SOMEWHAT disagree. A film needs to have a certain level of quality if it is to be shown in theatres or even on broadcast TV. Remember when HD finally got to a point that they deemed it good enough quality to make feature films with? If I'm not mistaken, one of first, if not the first, "Hollywood" features to be shot on HD and released to theatres was Once Upon A Time In Mexico. There were also other projects that bragged about being edited on smaller, less hardware based NLE's, like Final Cut, the original design version, not the iMovie pro version they have now. Those kinds of things were important for moving the system of film making into the hands of people that didn't have the backing of big studios. Letting people who had the desire but didn't have the connections know that they could get their stories made into movies that people might actually be able to see, and even GO and see.

I study it more because I know what you had to do to achieve such a fine production with the budget you had and how people chipped in to help make your dream come a reality. They saw that you were very heart felt about the project and cared and that the story was a good one.

    I’ve never been so torn. This is literally the best camera I can afford and no one has ever offered me an expensive camera. There’s some contradiction, although you have a bunch of expensive cameras behind you, you yourself stated that when you made your first movie you didn’t care what they thought about your camera. I got this camera for under 600 and I literally could not find a better alternative with the same qualities.

    • @LadySaigo
      @LadySaigo 3 месяца назад +1

      Exactly. This whole thing is contradictory. "What counts is the story" "the equipment doesn't matter" - meanwhile telling you the equipment DOES matter and don't use a DJI. Make that make sense.
      If the equipment doesn't matter, then just let people film on whatever they have: their phone, a DJI, a crappy camcorder from BestBuy. As long as they focus on the story, that's what matters right?
      90% of people looking into filming with not a professional camera are beginners just trying to do the best they can with something decent. Anyone doing it just to "prove" they can are going to be a stark minority and/or just doing it for content for their RUclips channel to test the limits of the device, which I don't see a problem with regardless. Let them. It's probably only going to be for RUclips anyway and it IS them having fun.
      Anyway, if you can't find a better alternative, you do you and make that film. You got this.

  • @AnotherMovieStudio
    @AnotherMovieStudio 3 месяца назад +1

    Okay I’ve seen a lot of people in the comments and people I know who have seen this specific video to be misinterpreting what he is actually getting at: The equipment gloating is not a flex.
    He’s saying you use whatever you have available to get a project made. You don’t need some fancy equipment or high end gear to make a film. If all you have is a DJI Pocket 3 to make a film, then that’s fine do it; but don’t do it simply because you want to show people you can do it with that camera alone.
    Now him saying if someone believes in you they’ll lend you a better camera, that could happen if you’re lucky; but it might not happen either. Though, as he’s trying to say in this video, that does not matter.
    Make what you want with what you have simply because it’s the project you’re passionate about, not because you want to be groundbreaking or wish to stand out all because of the equipment you used.
    He’s not saying “don’t film a movie with the DJI Osmo Pocket 3” he’s saying don’t try to be a hero and say you did it to prove something whenever nobody will give a crap what you used.

    Being an owner of both the OG OSMO Pocket and OSMO Pocket 3, and using them extensively for specialty time-lapse work, I think you should be taking some of your own advice, and using whatever you've got to make a movie. By your own stated logic, if it doesn't matter what tool you use to make a movie, then it also doesn't matter if the camera is an OSMO Pocket 3 Gimbal Camera then does it Marcus ? Let Mr. OSMO Pocket 3 go straight ahead and try it. Of course I agree with you the emphasis should be on the story and not the equipment. Just so we're clear, (Even though the equipment doesn't matter and isn't the point), you do know that little camera in your hand has full jam-sync SMPTE Time Code capability right ? You do get the Pocket 3 is designed with double system sound capability in mind ? (Well, it has it it !) You do understand that through the wireless Mic that comes with the camera you can plug in professional external microphones right ? (You can also do the same via simple USB adapter directly to the camera itself. This little camera has every professional feature the SONY FX3 has (Except the interchangeable, better lenses, of course). There is enough of a good 1 inch sensor in the camera to yield very acceptable results ( *IF they are very careful framing up their shots and pay attention to their lighting) because there is slight barrel distortion particularly on the outer limits of the image at the bottom left and right edges.*

    Markus, I really enjoy your videos, except for this one. You are arguing against your point. To make a movie on a dji pocket 3, or another non traditional film making camera is definitely a challenge. Artist are always looking to do something different and challenging. The script is important, but not as important as the journey. To have a 20 person film team with all the high-tech and most expensive equipment is one way, and the expectation will be extremely high. Now put a two person team with a pocket 3, and the film comes out amazing. Who are you going to be more impressed with. You are always going on with small and lighter is better for you, and I definitely agree. But as artist we are always looking to explore, to think out of the box with nontraditional methods. Keep up the great work, but on this video, I think you dropped the ball.

It doesn't matter, why i don't advertise it... Do good job in final image, and it doesn't matter what equipment is used. But you can make idiotic restrictions or fallacies.
    Like believe that wide angle lens is all you need, or it is capable to be used get same control as with normal or short telephoto lenses in normal use.
    I don't do video for high end production. And when someone pay for job, i don't take my C class equipment to do it... It is A class for my flexibility.

When I got back to the put-in and was in the process of loading my kayak, a person from another party noticed the bottle and appeared to be vey interested in it. They approached and asked where I got it from. I replied, in the river, out by the old flooded homesteads. The person couldn't stop looking at the bottle, fixated on it. I grabbed my paddle, my pfd, my pack and gear bag, and tossed them, along with the bottle, into the trunk and as I was stepping into my car, the person barks out ' you know that's a genie bottle right"! I was a little startled and for a moment I thought, oh oh, is this going to be one of those encounters? The person didn't say anything else but now they were staring at the trunk of my car. I got out of there pronto. When I got home, I have to be honest, I got the bottle out of the trunk, took it inside the house, cleaned it up a bit and then...yup, I took the cork out and gave it a little rub. The internal mics probably didn’t do well, but I’ll try the wireless one if just for the fun of experimenting. Looking forward to the difference. Don’t really expect great results. Might have to do separate recording equipment.

    For my last vacation I bought a 10 year old camcorder to use and abuse. The videos that I made with it are getting as many (if not more) views than the stuff I made with 4K equipment and nobody has mentioned poor quality video. I therefore take your advice entirely. Thanks. I always enjoy your content.

    I remember people hyping up "The Creator" because it was shot on a FX3. Hell I would have not even heard about the movie if YT creators didn't hype up the camera used in it. And in the end the movie turned out to be mediocre story wise (imo)

    • @maddogtank8425
      @maddogtank8425 6 месяцев назад +1

      That's the one thing I think he's missing. And the one thing that I don't understand is why he's diswaiting people from making a movie with a camera that's perfectly capable of it. Yes, is it limiting 100%? However, the main thing that makes a movie s***** Is the story being mediocre? The camera being at the same focal length throughout the entire movie isn't shitty if there is a very enough set and Shot composition and the story is good enough. I know i'm much rather watch a movie Made on a pocket 3. That is as good as the Godfather, when it comes to story and cinematography in general, such as like shot composition. And lighting rather than watch a movie made on an Alexa, that a five year old came up with and shot.

    I clicked on this thinking you would be talking about a specific movie that was made with the dji pocket 3 -- mainly because that camera's price tag is way more in the reach of most consumers. Having a gimbal is a plus, because I hate movies with the shaky cam. Oh well, just another Markus rant, which is ok I guess.
