Seeing you mention Derlei makes me remember Carlos Alberto. He was only 19 years old when he scored the first goal in the final, giving Porto the 2003/2004 UCL trophy.
Carlos Alberto was a very troubled person, in spite having a lot of talent... He didn't work hard and was a mess of a person (he needed someone else always checking out to not get into trouble and Porto did it very often).
Lucas, with this video you brought tears to my eyes, both because of Derlei's life story and the memories you brought me remenbering Ninja playing for our beloved FC Porto. Such a humble player Derlei was! I'll always remember him running from attack to our defensive midfield trying to win the ball and when he did it he still had the strength to go score a goal on the counter-attack. And then you made me remember Panathinaikos and the penalty kick in Coruña. Thank you, Lucas.
I nearly cry bro and I never hear before about Derlei, what a player, he come from cero and give hope to the small team making him a hero is always nice to see a good man getting what he deserves
Thank you so much for this . Derlei is just one of many many Mourinhos masterpieces on and off the pitch, which is something that younger generations will hardly ever understand. Awesome video content.
Back when I was a kid, I used to hate Derlei, he seemed to score every time he played against Sporting, and then, we sign him, and he became Liédson's best ever partner. What a player, one of the best in the Portuguese league in the 00's, and awfully underrated.
"and in a poetic moment Derlei was the one to take it. He scored and Mourinho subbed him off. When he did the Porto fans gave him a standing ovation, but he was completely reduced to tears." Thanks for the videos
7:32 Some extra context, that Panathinaikos team had a lot of Greek players that would go on to win the Euro 2004 one year later and the previous year they topped their group in the Champions League against the rich and new stadium Schalke, Mallorca of Etoo and the invincibles Arsenal. Then in the knock out their were the favourites against Barcelona in the quarterfinals. They only lost because a last second shot went wide with the whole Camp Nu at its feet expecting it to be a goal that would give Panathinaikos the away goal victory. Beating them in Greece, somewhere that Barcelona of Rivaldo, Xavi, Overmars e.t.c. and the Arsenal of Henry, Viera e.t.c. both failed to even get a draw, it was a big deal!
I remember him very well. But then, there were a number of other good players in that Porto side that didn't quite hit the limelight afterwards. Even the Monaco side they beat 3:0 had a number of young stars that couldn't live up to their full potentials. Well, such is life.
I'm sure the fact he said no to Chelsea did not "leave everyone to wonder what it could have been if he paired up with Drogba".. In fact, I'm certain no one ever said that sentence up until now 😅😅😅 another great video nonetheless. Keep it up 👌
He didn't fade away, he got sold , spent two years at sporting and decided to retire in Brazil. I loved watching play for Leiria and Porto, but we porto fans always knew 95% of those players were playing levels above their actual ability merely because mourinho made them believe they were the best in the world. But Derlei had a solid career
They were always "playing above their actual ability in FCPorto" because in FCPorto there's a magic juice called Amarelinha that boosts the average player's performance and speeds up injury recovery, remember Marega? Everybody knows it.

Derlei was never the same player after the serious injury he got in his second season at porto, thats the real reason he's career never took off after porto. He played for Benfica and Sporting but he never got nowhere near the level he reached at Porto.
Well, the guy had a pretty respectable career. And his amazing seasons at Porto will never be forgotten by Porto fans. They all know who Derlei is. Peace.
Actually, Derlei went to Dynamo Moscow after FC Porto and had two good seasons there. Afterwards failed in the loan to benfica... but played quite well in sporting the following two seasons...
The biggest shock watching this is that Celtic, a SCOTTISH side was the monster in the room back then. So sad how big money has made the game so restricted to the few big money clubs.
He had a serious injury, and was never the same. Also the fact he didn't play for Portugal is BS. He was a portuguese citizen by the time of euro04, but he was never before call, so was no reason to do so, now that the squad was complete. He the half season with Fernandez, Porto was a very different team. A lot leave, a lot came in, so the team wasn't at is best. And Porto sell more players, in the mid season. Derlei was one of then.
Disappeared? He got the contract of his life in Dinamo Moscow.. He stayed there a few years and the he played in Sporting Lisbon... 90% of football players would love to "disappear" like him....
Disappear!? I remenber him playing for bigger clubs than corrupts FCP ... benfica and SPORTING (Two special moments 5-3 Sporting - SL Benfica and great goal against russian team in UCL)!
