How I set up Desert Lizard shocks

- I haven’t found any videos I’ve looked that do a good job of explaining how or why to set up these shocks in any certain way. This is my preferred method but these shocks give you the most adjustability and the best control of the movement of your suspension of any other shocks, especially for the money.
Fellow utahn here. Currently building my desert lizards. I’m new to crawling and this helped out a ton. Thank you
Someone give this guy a hug! Thank you for the video mate. I love these shocks, and this might be the best build tutorial I've seen!
Best desert lizard shock video hands down!
Thank you. I know it doesn’t have the production value of other channels, but hey.
I just bought 3 sets of these and have been searching far n wide on RUclips and nobody has explained setting them up quite like you. Now I feel completely comfortable getting them setup they’ve just been sitting in the package because the instructions are literally none existent and most RUclips videos don’t explain much but I greatly appreciate the knowledge you have shared with this video keep it up 👍🏾 🤘🏾
@@Defcon_One1 I’m glad I could help :)
Tip starting @13:05 really helped me getting the shocks dialed.
I love these, and couldn’t figure out the bleeding to get it to screw all the way down! Thank you so much best video I’ve seen yet on these, thanks for your time! They should sponsor you!!
I set up my shocks the same way as you on my TRX4 High Trail. Love it. No more flipping on a small side hill. Great vid for those who are lost with these shocks.
Thank you for the feedback.
Thank you! I’m a noob to crawling and this has been the best explanation I’ve seen so far.
Freaking fantastic build video on these shocks!!! Getting ready to build mine for my wraith, saved this video for future reference 100 times thanks Rc brother 🙏
You’re very much welcome.
glad I saw your vid, I have the lizards and have not developed them as the coilovers I use were ok... but always knew I needed the spring selection to bring out their best... : )
Best video I've ever seen about shocks.
Great job, this helped a lot of people I bet.
It definitely helped me..
Thank you! I hope it did.
Great ideas for low CG crawling. I'm contemplating a progressive spring rate for my bouncer by moving the short spring to outside the plunger and adding another plunger to separate the short medium and medium soft length springs.
Fantastic video, Cameron! Thank you for sharing your endless RC wisdom with all of us in the community 🤙🏼🤙🏼🙌🏼
Just got these shocks, thanks for the tips on putting them together. Have a SCX10 Deadbolt from 2014 that I'm finally upgrading.
This is a excellent explanation, tutorial, or “Pro-Tip” video. I run the same setup on the front as you do with the exception of a two hole piston. On the rear I run both medium springs swapping the springs as you do with the short spring above the piston. So far so good. I’m buying another set this week and I’m gonna set them up exactly how you have yours to compare them, and see if I like it better. Anyway, great video.
Great video explaining the benefits of the Desert Lizards! I’ve been running mine with the long soft springs under the piston and the short soft spring on top (medium short spring on top in the back). This is on a Gspeed V3 carbon chassis so it’s pretty light and I want as much droop as possible. This gives me just under 5mm up travel which is all I need to keep it from riding stiff and I can get the rig pointed up steep without the front unloading. I feel like the long spring below the piston gives just a slight bit of tension against the short spring above the piston to really keep the suspension from unloading.
Another bonus is that a seal rebuild kit is included along with all the mounting hardware, all the tuning springs and pistons so you don’t have to buy anything else. Just add the oil you want and go!
Thank you.
Very cool, I recently got some 90mm Desert Lizard shocks for my Gen8 & will use your method. Thanks for the video.
Hope you like it.
Just got some! Thanks for the great video. Cheers
awesome to hear your thoughts on these bad boys. keep up the cool vids
Very nice video. I´m going to buy those 90mm desert lizard to my Vanquish VS4-10 Phoenix and 15weight shock oil is a good idea.
What did you use for shock tower mounts on your VS10 stock ones do not work on my straight axle and I also cannot flip due to shock body hitting axle. What did you do?
Nice i feel smart because that was the first thing i did to my lizards just to keep it from unloading. I have it on a basic 10.2 chassis with no weights and its awesome i still have full extension/ flex 💪🏼 awesome 👍🏽
This was helpful, thank you
Cool break down.....thanks.
That's exactly how I do them nice job. Except you don't have to disassemble it to replace droop spring I just unthread it from the shaft like a key on a key ring.
True, but I like to get grease pushed into where the o-rings are while I’m doing it.
Great video 👍 very informative.
Thank you. Glad it helped.
I’m getting a set for my new Vanquish I hear the big bore type shocks don’t fit it. And it comes with 80 mm shocks & hear 90mm improves the performance so I’m getting the 90mm ones.
I like the idea on the light weight oil, how many holes in your plunger? Happy holidays!
I’ve played with the 2&3 hole plungers but ended up just going back to the four hole and just changing the oil weight if I need to.
I’m curious about how much stroke different sizes have? Say with your set up. Compressed and fully extended. I know it’s going to change with different spring set up. I like how your doing it.
Very Cool tutorial!
Great video. Thanks for the detailed experience. I was wanting to get these for my Capra. Do u think I should go with the 90mm or 100mm. Let me know your opinion. Thanks.
For the Capra I would go with 100mm personally, but 90s would sit a bit lower. It would depend a bit on your terrain and driving style.
Thanks the spring set up u have is awsome. Did it to my 100mm I just got in. Btw check out rc pirates for shock tower. Have them on my phoenix. Have to cut the fenders a bit to fit in front though.
Had a question. If u flip them like u did on your phoenix. Should u leave the springs the way they are as they came stock.
@@kevinhill2929 yes. It functions correctly this way whether right side up or up side down.
Thanks. Sorry for shock towers was rc rock pirates. But have to trim the inner front fenders to fit. But ya have the 100 mm desert lizards on my Fordryce. Might pick them up for my phoenix as well. I am running the trx4 shocks on it but really like not having the coil over shock just like u mentioned with oil grime build on springs.
Thanks for sharing 👊🏾😎 Rcfam
Thanks bud. Great video.
Estaba buscando alguien que hubiera montado los Desert Lizard Two Stage en un Vanquish VS4-10 Phoenix. Muchas gracias. Me faltó saber cuál cilindro montaste (De cuántos agujeros)
Liked and subbed brother! Thanks juat what I need. Do you recommend the same setup with 120mm on the trx-4 K10 High Trail??
I would definitely recommend trying this set up first and then see if you need to make any adjustments. This set up works as is on all but two of my trucks. I only made small adjustments from the set up for those two.
If I’m tryng to get a realistic look what springs would you recommend??
I’m not really sure how to answer that, the springs don’t really change the look in my opinion. They just change the ride height and firmness, so it would just be a matter of putting whatever length springs that you want below or above the piston to make it sit at the right height you want.
The oil weight in the springs you you will determine on how heavy of a axle you have or use
Any advice for rc4wd leaf spring set up? Cant seem to find much
I haven’t done a leaf truck yet. These would work well as dampers though I think. Just don’t run any springs in them and find a oil thickness you like.
Why did you mount them up side down? I am just learning as well
And what oil weight did you start off with? I am putting 90mm on 2 scx10.3 and 120mm on my green wraith with a custom cage
Because they'll leak less, if at all, and it puts the heavy end down. I almost always use 15 or 20 weight to allow the shock to move more freely. Heavy oil just makes the shock slower or sometimes not even move its full range of motion.
Thank you.
