dude really thought he could win by riding out a guard pull advantage for 10 minutes. shameful display of jiu jitsu on the part of mike perez as well as ibjjf for allowing such stalling to happen for half the match, of a worlds final no less. props to tommy for staying composed and attacking with sharp techniques. it’s a shame you’d see more exciting matches from the blue belts who are willing to go out there and game.

Normally I would say any strategy is valid but this really was just zero engagement at all, pinning the ankle and staying as far away as possible. I get that being able to say he is a world champ is huge for his potential career but sheesh

While it true that striking martial arts are always more popular than grappling martial arts butt Scottish doesn't help with the popularity of bjj.

Perez brought shame on competitive Jiu Jitsu with his lack of engagement, but Tommy refusing to change his game plan in any way didn’t help. I’ve noticed at the highest level, especially in IBJJF, guys go in with one specific plan and they refuse to adapt in any way to what their opponent is doing. If Tommy didn’t like that Perez wasn’t engaging he could have stood up at any time to score a takedown and start attacking from the top. I get that guys specialize and it’s good strategy to stick with your game plan, but it makes the sport so hard to watch. If you’re the best you should be well rounded enough to attack from all positions, not just open guard from bottom.

Ibjjf sucks. Where is the warning for stalling, so boring to watch. The ref sucks

Perez won trials due to shady referees and it is seems that he was getting help here also.
