It's honestly speaks to it's pull factor that they could open in the least settled part of Germany and not next to a city
Egypt - Visited pyramids at Giza. Saw mostly 'abandoned' buildings on the way (no windows/doors) until I realized people were living there.
And when we got off our tour bus at the pyramids, we were met by hoardes of aggressive beggars trying to sell us plastic trinkets....they'd stand in front of you and try block you from walking and grab your hand and place 'a gift' (plastic pyramid) in it saying it's free, then ask for a gift in return. They'd get angry if you refused and there were so many, it was very intimidating.
Also, our bus had a police escort, and an armed guard on it who had an uzi machine gun hidden under his suit jacket....and the town of Giza had army trucks and soldiers with guns standing there...VERY scary.
I know a couple who honeymooned there also, and because the wife was blonde they were constantly followed by large groups of men offering money to sleep with her. Local men had zero tact, zero respect for distance. The husband was getting really angry but couldn't do much because he was heavily outnumbered. It's very backwards there.
Of course it is backwards, the advanced civilization died out or moved on,, and were replaced by Arab tribes.
That's what happens when you allow Islam to destroy your culture. It's happening to England, France and Germany right now as well.
It's so sad because I always had a fascination with Egypt as a child and always dreamed of seeing the pyramids and all the other famous places there. But I hear stories about women being routinely sexually assaulted at these sites by the camel guys, relentlessly harassed at the markets and some straight up kidnapped. I feel terrible for saying it, but as a solo female traveller, it's one of many countries I would avoid visiting because, unfortunately, Muslim countries don't have the best reputation for not harassing female tourists. I've heard stories about Turkey as well, though not as bad.

@@myself-cs5fr To be honest I think this is up to you going in expecting the wrong thing. You have to have street smarts in Egypt or you'll get scammed. They're pretty brazen about it. As long as you understand how it works Egypt is a wonderful place to be. I've dived with tiger sharks in the red sea, driven motobikes in the Sahara and visited "nomadic tribes" or at least imitations of how they used to be. Along with that I've been to Giza and Hurghada for a more tourist friendly experience. If you take a taxi in Egypt there's more than 50% chance they'll try to scam you. They're not sorry, just let them know it's not working.
About visiting the pyramids. Go with a group and a guide. It doesn't matter what kinda guide as long as they're recommended. Our guide told the peddlers and scammers to try other people since we had been informed. There's no reason for them to try if they know it won't work.
The trainstation area in Frankfurt is infamous for being one Germanys worst neighbourhood for decades. There actually were serveral british newspaper articles about it just last month to warn English tourists when their soccer team played in Frankfurt during the European Championship and the fans would have to walk through it on their way from the trains to the stadium.
I agree, I was about to write something similar. It's just sad to know that this is the only impression of Germany this one person had.

Asked someone for directions and instead of a no or even just being outright ignored, they had to go into great detail about how im ruining this country and taking jobs. It is horrifying how they downgraded Egypt . From most of human history , Egypt fed a third of humanity and was a beacon of literature and knowledge . It isn't a proper shadow of it for most human history .
Not the entire Dominican Republic but I would not go back to punta Cana. Me being used to people trying to sell you things everywhere you go was fine. But the people I went with had no idea how to deal with them.
They kept stopping and really thinking people were their friends then they’d get sucked into buying crap they didn’t need.
Then 3 days before we went back they were all broke and needed help with basic needs. It sucked.
Also my room got broken into the last day and 300 dollars was taken. A bag was taken as well.
They checked the maid carts when I informed them and boom. My bag and the 300 sitting in the maid cart for our building.
I agree with Punta Cana not being good, but I feel like your reasons for why it sucked could literally apply to any non-western/ 3rd world country. Your friends seem like very inexperienced travelers.
Egypt. Cairo was so incredible dirty. But the worst: As a woman traveling alone I was constantly approached by men wanting to get to know me (i.e marry me for a visa). I couldn’t enjoy anything and left sooner than planned.
2 of my friends were missionaries to Haiti.Unfortunately they paid the ultimate price. But what were they supposed to do?Just leave all the kids in the orphanage on the street.They had a chance to escape but they loved that country and so that's where they died

Mexico, I never felt safe at all when traveling there anymore. Cartels and Government security would either be killing each other or be working together. I never felt at ease the more time I spent there

I was told by a gang leader at the bar in my hotel in Canún, Mexico that his men wanted to kill me because I’m British and he was the only reason they weren’t doing it right now.
I could see guns in their belts under their shirts and his two men were snarling at me and shouting expletives in Spanish. You had to have a wristband to get past security and to order drinks as they didn’t have a cash register. The bar tender was visibly scared of them, I only managed to slip out because a group of Colombian guests joined our section of the bar.
When ever you went out of the complex of hotels there were SUV’s with police dressed like SWAT riding on the side of them

I used to honestly be kind of obsessed with Japan and then I kind of looked in the mirror one day and realized Japan would not love me so I'm good with learning the language and living my life.
I would have to say Mexico, the general population is actually rather nice, but the police are corrupt as hell and it's pretty hard to communicate when they're yelling angry Spanish at you and knocking your leg out from under you with a club.

1. If you’re easily offended, don’t go, their SOG is NOT PC!
2. I assume “Seppo” is a contraction of “Septic Tank”, cockney rhyming slang for Yank. Not necessarily an insult, in the same way as POME (Prisoner Of Mother England) is for Brits. Take the hit, own it, and you’ll fare way better.
3. I have family there, & have been three times now. One of my cousins was brutal in his first words to me, I knew then it was gonna be fun

Mexico, specifically Cancun. Got married there and on my wedding day the venue called a taxi for me and my wife, we were told on the phone and when we got in the taxi that the (short) trip would cost 400 pesos, got to the end, handed the driver 400 pesos and were told it was 800 pesos. We guessed that the driver thought we were rich because I was white and we were speaking in English. I told him to pound sand in Spanish and he started aggressively flipping through price lists before showing me 800 pesos on one list (he neglected to remove the "precio gringo" tape) and started saying that if I didn't pay he would call the police. I told him that if he didn't leave immediately I would call the police and play them the recording of the 400 peso quote we received from the taxi company. He then shoved a gun in my face.
And that is how my wife found out how effective NZ military training is.
I agree on the Singapore one. I visited on vacation in 2012 with my then BF now husband and maybe it has improved but we went to a pub and saw a local woman slapped and punched by some man she was with(she just cried a bit and continued sitting there). Everybody(in a full pub) just pretended it didn't happen and when I asked my BF if we should report it to a manager or call the cops, he just say leave it alone. I insisted on leaving after finishing the drinks we had. It tainted the country for me and it was frightening. I hope its better now but I won't ever go back...I see all their PRs online about how its amazing but that undercurrent of violence is still there for me.
My friends and I call Singapore a country with no soul. Yes, it is rich and clean and orderly. But that is as far as it goes. Service workers are treated horribly. Everything is about status. They are just very good in advertising their country. It's a very sad place.
I have been to Germany many times and visited several cities. I have a large group of friends there scattered all over the country and while I have never been to Frankfurt, I know that it's the one city in Germany that is quite dodgy. I would advise the person in this story to visit somewhere like Leipzig, Hamburg or Munich as they will have a much different and more positive experience. Rural Bavaria is also really beautiful.

Count myself lucky that I haven’t gone anywhere that involved a bad experience.
I do prefer going to new places over ones I’ve been to before. The only exception is if I didn’t get to go everywhere I wanted or some activities weren’t available at the time I went.
I will say though, don’t go to Kyoto in the summer. It was humid as balls there. Rest of Japan was fine temperature-wise but I was constantly melting in that city.
I wouldn't want to go back to the UK. Visited there several times before Brexit, wouldn't do it now.
The place is OKish - some nice architecture, cold weather, bad food, nothing unforgivable.
However every time I went there, I was the only person questioned out of the entire plane, because I am Bulgarian and I was flying from Spain. I've lived in Spain most of my life, but didn't get the citizenship because I didn't feel it was needed (no duel citizenship allowed within the EU). To be questioned as if you are a criminal every time you arrive in a country, just because of where you were born, it gets really really tiring fast.
Why go to the UK and get treated like scum when I can go anywhere else and be treated like a regular person?

The two complaints about America are Las Vegas being overrated and the US just being too big.
I know experiences can vary: but it's funny that some think America has major problems with being racist/xenophobic. And then there are countries where that actually _is_ more mainstream.
True. Racism in American is almost nonexistent anymore and if someone is, they tend to not show it. I've noticed that latin countries like Mexico, Brazil, etc are MUCH more openly racist.
Many Asians are openly racist. They will say it to your face in a very hostile manner.

I can understand not going back to Japan. While it's a good modern nation with friendly people, there is an undercurrent of racism in the nation. I didn't see it when I was there, but it is there.

Sydney's people are known to be snooty and shallow, Melbourne's people love their wanker coffee, Brisbane's people love their XXXX beer and are fans of Bluey C. Heeler because she lives there, Adelaide's people hate their town water, Canberra's people are dizzy from the roundabouts and are overall crazy, Darwin's people think 30°C is too cold, and we forget that Perth exists.

If you visit California, be advised that it can get VERY hot here in the summer, and weather in the winter can shift drastically and plan accordingly. Some of the rural places have no cell reception and terrible roads.
You are so right- just to add more, it also depends on the place. San Francisco can be 60 F and windy while LA is 100 F with no breeze on the same day. And even in big cities, there are patches without internet especially in nature-y areas. Where I lived in the Bay Area lacked internet despite being a residential area

Jamaica cops will sell you weed, and then arrest. My family went there for my sister's wedding. It was a great trip until we were at the airport. The police accused my sister's friend of trying to buy weed. We had to give the cops 2 cartons of cigarettes for her release. They don't sell cigarettes there.

Having to be worried about North Korean soldiers crossing the DMZ trying to kidnap you, some of the lack of cleanliness, and just in general as someone who at times struggles with depression, being in a country that’s #2 worldwide in deaths by suicide is both scary and sickening with how systematic this is.

Not a country, but Paris. Got shouted at by metro staff for not having a ticket that would open the barriers that I had literally just bought, rubbish and foul smell absolutely everywhere, rude as hell locals and crazy over crowded public transport. Absolute shit hole.

Bro I'm French and I wouldn't get within a 50km radius of Paris 😂. We have a saying in France: "Paris is Paris and outside of Paris is France". The castles in central France, the Alps, Pyrenees, Montpelier etc. are where tourists should go.
No to self. Always travel with a man who can protect me. And research the heck out of the laws and any protest or political anythings happening when I want to go. Arrested for standing? Touched while walking? Theres just so many things that co go wrong. RESEARCH and pick your country very carefully.
I've traveled to many countries solo as a woman and have always been fine. It depends on the country.
Been all over the world and there’s not one place I wouldn’t return to… or regretted. China I didn’t like how ppl took photos of me randomly on the street, but tbh Chinese tourists did they to me in my home country too lol. Paris is probably near the bottom of my list, but other places in France makes up for it. Cuba the foot was bad and it was boring… wasn’t bad just not for me. going to Egypt soon though so we will see how that turns out.

I have been to 41 countries. There's not a single one I'd categorically say I wouldn't visit again. My girlfriends usually haven't travelled as much as me and I enjoy being able to give them enjoyable experiences in other countries, no matter which one it is.
I wonder where the people that were kidnapped in brazil went. You can have a pretty bad time there, but just get a local to instruct you on where and where not to go and you are OK. It doesn't help that most foreigners think of Rio when they think of Brazil. Rio is definetly the least safe place (by a very wide margin) in the southern half of the country.
I'm not visiting a country where thousands of square kilometers are unexplored and undocumented. You're asking for trouble at that point.
Australia will never make sense to me. They have large ratites and kangaroos that reproduce uncontrollably, but what do they eat there? They mainly eat beef that is raised on farms that have to be defended at great expense against the kangaroos and emus that they also like to shoot from helicopters, but God forbid that these animals are hunted to be eaten, particularly because kangaroo is delicious and emus don't taste much different to chicken, with the difference that you can feed 12 people with one bird.
I've only been to one country and it was Canada. I really liked it. It felt a lot like America but just slightly nicer people. I loved the natural history museum in vancouver. It was excellent.
Canada is like the US with good transit and nicer people. The buildings in their cities are also just newer glassy and almost futuristic.
I had a comp sci professor in college 2004-2008 who worked in Dubai back in the 60’s-70’s when they were first setting up their telecommunications network. He used to tell us his “Dubai Stories” all the time.

I would like to point out that Japan has one of the worst policies when it comes to foreigners that you can imagine. For example, the number of non-Japanese people who are allowed to live in certain areas is limited. Even if there is still capacity, you cannot buy them. You have to find a reputable Japanese person or a reputable company that will work for you. These places are really expensive and very limited, which of course means that they are not allowed and are wasted on the unemployed. This means that if you lose your job, with a bit of luck you have 60 days to find a new job or you can be deported.
Most people are horrible pretty much anywhere.

I would like to point out that the Egyptian Museum is so bad because it was looted during the uprising after which the Muslim Brothers took over and then the general who is currently ruling as president or dictator chased the Muslim Brothers away. During this time, absolutely no one has approved new funding for the reconstruction of the museum or replaced the people who died in the course of this political reorganization or even provided a budget to continue to finance Beren positions. The Tutankhamun exhibition looks so good because the British are continuing to finance it and in return they should get the artefacts back at a later date, which will now be on Judgement Day.
I loved China. Don’t like their government but the people were amazing and kind. We went there to adopt our amazing son! Best time ever once our new three year old son quit screaming bloody murder and decided his brand new parents were not horrible. LOL! He’s an adult now and adopting him was the best thing we ever did.
I had the same trip. The people were wonderful, but I was always afraid of the government. They made their presence known everywhere. I’m good. Never going again.

#20 America. That was pretty vague. That, technically, is not a country. There are the two continents of North and South America, each including a number of different countries.
One could assume they meant the country United States of America. Even then, which state(s) did they visit? What many people outside North America tend to not realize is how vast the country is. There are 50 states. Most states are about the size of an average European country, and each has their own multiple sets of cultures that make the states seem like separate countries. Even if you dipped your toes in a few states, basing an opinion on the country as a whole is hardly fair or realistic.

Paris…the centre is fine but outside it a dirty, graffiti mess that looks disgusting. The river is fine but it’s just to packed and full tourists everywhere and the Eiffel Tower isn’t even that good looking.

Probably India. Overall I’m glad I went, there are some really beautiful places and things to see, it’s good to go once, but I have no desire to go back. People see you’re white and will try to rip you off. Tuk tuk drivers will deliberately take wrong turns to charge you more. Even private hire tour guides will take you to random overpriced places you don’t want to go because they get a commission. If you’re female, men will constantly be asking for selfies with you and get quite rude, even aggressive when you say no. I would like to point out that Dubai was a third world country with a few fishing villages and farmers and no relevant production of anything, then capitalism came there, oil was extracted and then a few rich families swept away all existing governments and today the country is controlled by the moneyed aristocracy, ice-cold capitalism and the population is divided into those who are super rich and those who work for them.

I had the same experience that the girl had in Japan in China. I was followed around and taunted for being fat and Black I even got fired and they said it was because I was fat. I also became a complete recluse and suicidal I had to leave.

I would never go back to Dubai. The people there are mean. I didn’t like the heat. If you’re a woman and you go there you really need to have a man with you because women are invisible. I wouldn’t go back to Turkey or Greece. Turkey it’s impossible to walk with out children following you begging for money. If you want to see antiquities it’s great but you have to check currency exchange every day. It’s not worth the stress. Greece I just want to say if there any lovers of Greek culture and antiques it’s all a tourist trap. Nothing you buy was made in Greece everything was made in China so getting souvenirs was useless. The government didn’t do a good job protecting the sites so it’s damaged or gone. However as disappointing as these things were I am glad I experienced it. I would encourage everyone to travel outside of their home country just once. It really helps you to appreciate home and you become more honest about what needs to be changed or protected.
Hey if anyone from the countries I mentioned live there no disrespect was intended. A tourist experience is not the same as living there. One thing I have always wished when I traveled was to meet more locals to get a better experience.

Death Valley 3 pm in July during record heat wave. 134 degrees Fahrenheit. All while a monsoon storm came yesterday turning the place into a mud pit. The all wheel drive in a Nissan ultima is not up for that challenge. Combining the ultra high humidity as the ground is rapidly evaporating all that mud and a clogged radiator from the mud and you’ll know what a sauna is like when the door won’t open. Moral of the story have off road recovery on speed dial and a satellite phone and plenty of Fiji water. Or just don’t go to Death Valley the day after a monsoon storm. The police are really bad in USA. Someone got offed by Johnny law over a cigarette. 50 bucks is a lot more than a cigarette. And if you need to go to the hospital while in USA just endure it.
Only other nation I've been to is Canada and I would not go back. I already kind of know that the canadian rep of them being 'nice' isn't really true. But going through a major canadian city with a strong southern accent from the USA and they seem to immediately seem to think you there to hate crime someone or something. Of course that might just be Ottawa which is the place I've been to the most. Toronto and Vancouver were ok enough. Although my rental did get vandalized in Vancouver, so that sucked.

I've been to seven continents and more than sixty countries, and there are several that I would rather avoid but not to the point that I would refuse to visit if there were good reason. The only exception is Thailand. That place is awful.

It’s been 25 or so years but when I visited Egypt it was amazing. The poverty is indeed grinding but the attitude “If you’ve seen one temple, you’ve seen them all.” is ridiculous! Every single sight there is a precious memory. Yes, the culture is very different from Western cultures but that doesn’t make it “less.” That is so racist.
Most people who visit Morocco go to Marrakesh which is awful. If you move away from the capital it’s a lot nicer. I go surfing slot in Acadia and will happily wander about in shorts and a tank top with no issues at all.
