Loved hearing about 'The Good' James Douglas! More videos about him please! Having done my family tree, I found I have deep ancestral roots in Scotland. I was thrilled to find out that Robert the Bruce is a great grandfather, but I was beyond thrilled to find that 'the Good' James was also a great grandfather! As a child, before I knew of my Scottish roots, I've loved Scotland and anything Scottish, I hope to realize my lifelong dream of visiting my ancestral home some day. Thank you, I really enjoy your stories!
Really appreciate the videos especially this one as I'm the co- regent of Douglas Clan Society in Michigan. I can never get enough stories of ancestral Grandfathers the Good Sir James and Robert the Bruce. Thanks for helping to keep Scottish history alive and nobody does it better!
Yes Sir, please do more videos on Good Sir James, I would love to learn more about Douglas's exploits, why he was known to the Scots as "Good Sir" as well as why those "south of the boarder" called him "Black Douglas" & no one tells it better than you Bruce... 💙🏴
My family is from Dunfermline. Thomas the Burt was friends with the Bruce, came with him from England. Buried there in Dunfermline Cemetery. Thank you for the tour and history 💜
Thank you so much for the hush ye poem. My Grandma was born in Canada to a Forfarshire Scottish Mother, and Devonshire English Father. Now I know what she was saying to us.
A'reyt Bruce. Only this week I had a post of a quiz question from Times Radio about Wallace. I usually get these right, which I assume is why RUclips keep recommending them, but this was one that I also added a comment to, praising your channel. Another great lesson on Scotland's history this week too.

Hi Bruce Wasn't expecting one of your excellent story telling posts today. For me, as a Sinclair, it has to be The Good Sir James❤ I remember reading somewhere years ago, before Geoff Brown, that the Lockharts of Lee brought Bruce's heart home and they too have the red heart on their family arms. That story would be of interest to me at least.

Another excellent and informational video, thanks. If you enjoy historical fiction, check out Jack Whyte, born I think in Stirling. He wrote a series on The Border Wars. Starting with "The Forest Laird" about Wallace. He also had a theory that the Robin Hood legend was based on the life of Wallace, living in Stirling (Sherwood?) Forest with his followers.
Braveheart wasn't William Wallace. That title goes to Robert the Bruce. As an American of Scots Descent, and amateur Historian who has studied Scottish History, I walked out of the movie "Braveheart" very disappointed in it's Hollywoodization/Bastardization. Very little in the movie was historically accurate from the opening narration onward. Most egregious moment? Wallace' hooking up with Isabella, who was 10 years of age at the time of Wallace's execution. She wasn't even married to Edward II yet. She wasn't even in England yet, and there's no historical record of Wallace and Isabella being within a hundred miles of each other. The story of the Black Douglas taking Bruce's heart to the Holy Land, has been a favorite of mine since childhood. Thank you Bruce for an excellent retelling of Sir James Douglas' story. I agree, Sir James could have the Braveheart appellation as well.
Never trust the silver screen for anything factual. Just suspend belief and enjoy the story. If it gives you the idea for a car with a moving map in the dashboard, you might find the studio has beaten you to the patent office.
William The Black Douglas kidnapped/married Eleanor de Ferries of FRATING, ESSEX* in 1288/1290. "..Eleanor married him, much to the displeasure of King Edward I who seized all of the Douglas’ lands in England and ordered the married couple imprisoned. To leave detention in Knaresborough Castle, Eleanor paid a fine of £100. In 1296, Douglas revolted against the King again and after a siege that killed 8000 civilians on Good Friday he was imprisoned in the Hogs Tower of the Castle. They were released after surrendering their Essex and Hertfordshire manors. Douglas chose to become the first noble to join William Wallace’s rebellion in 1297, instead of accompanying Edward I to a campaign in Flanders against Philip IV. Douglas recaptured Sanquhar Castle, killed 500 retreating English soldiers and launched attacks against Derisdale and Scone Abbey. Edward 1 captured Douglas whilst he was with Sir Robert the Bruce.. He was imprisoned for a third time in Berwick Castle; and then the after the defeat at Stirling Bridge he was moved to the Tower of London where he died from abuse in 1298.." *I am the local History Recorder. This would make a good story to cover.

According to the anonymous writer in my mom's 3rd form reader, it was Sir James Douglas who carried de Brus' heart to Spain encased in silver and carried around his neck. On seeing a comrade (Sir William St Clair) surrounded by Moors he charged to the rescue and was himself surrounded. He took the case from around his neck , threw the case, and charged the Moors saying "Pass on in fight as thou wert wont to do and Douglas will follow thee or die." They found Sir James Douglas' dead body over that silver case.
Good vid,Bruce, upvote from me : nice to see the battle of Theba/Teba(Aug.1330) get a decent mention for once, even the main Sinclair ancestor [contrary to the Roslin Chapel MI,he was only 'the younger of Roslin' at the time of his 1330 death,as his father was still alive] ! 👍 P.S. (1) Also personally referred to Douglas as 'Good Sir James' [ noting the collective ancestry via his grandson Sir William of Nithsdale's dau. I have never heard of the Good Sir James. However, carrying the name Douglas, I'll surely have to look more of his story. BTW, I grew up with the story that Douglas derives from the German dunkeln, which means 'dark.' So the 'black' moniker for the Good Sir James is understandable in that way.

Hi Bruce, im heading to Scotland in February from Australia (something watching your videos in the last couple of years played a part in!). Is there any chance you might be doing any shows around then?
Have you done a video on the harrying of the Buchans? I'm from the area and share the name. I'll dig through your channel (love what I've seen so far). This video reminded me of it. Still love Robert the Bruce though.
Apparently the sculpture of Willam Wallace that is on at Nicolas church at the bottom of Lanark was done be a carluke man, as was " bonnie prince Charlie" on top of the Glenfinnan monument, allegedly sir Walter Scott had told the sculpture that there was a picture of bonnie prince Charlie in the library at lee castle in braidwood, after being let in by the house keep he then chose the wrong portrait to base his sculpture on!!!
I read about this, this morning, as this is the Anniversary. Ya Dobber is my favorite cheeky word. Have you done a Video on Robroyston yet? My daughter and I wish to visit Scotland in the coming year. I could think of no one better to consult than you sir. Can you point me it the right direction?
Guid Sir James is one of the most underappreciated, and unknown, of all the Scottish heroes (Andrew de Moray being the most notable other). His name should be as widely known as William Wallace and Robert the Bruce.
