After studying the Anglo Scottish wars, a history teacher I know played the film and asked her students to jot as many inaccuracies as they can on a blank piece of paper. They never failed to fill at least one side. So even terrible “historic” films can be educational. 🤣
My grandmother's maiden name is Bruce. It's the only thing I have from that side. I've read so much and when I was at my lowest the stories lifted me back up. If Robert could lose so much and still succeed, I too could overcome my demons and pull myself back up.
In my opinion, Robert Bruce killed a man in a church who had done more for Scottish independence than either himself or William Wallace combined... Just saying...
My favourite has to be Andrew de Moray. He taught the other 2 what the strategy was to win a guerrilla fight. Born in Elgin and having Murray in my DNA also makes me a wee bit biased. Keep the fantastic work Bruce.

BBC should seriously consider picking this up for series. Production value and presenting skills are excellent, fascinating subject delivered with genuine insight and enthusiasm.
Wallace was sincere, loyal, steadfast, valiant, and more courageous and braver than the others, for he was a real, trustworthy hero, and leader. Most of those who followed him were commoners, who saw in him a protector from the thugs of the time, namely, the nobles and kings of Scotland and England! To be a true King, a man must have the qualities and virtues necessary for such an undertaking, and sadly, this is rarely to be found, nor even aspired to, through the many ages of mankind. In Wallace, these qualities were plentiful, even overflowing, and when he screamed freedom, he meant it, unlike the many fork-tongued of those days, and these too. I would gladly follow him into battle, if it was worth fighting for, and lay down my life, for such men will always inspire loyalty and commitment.
Wallace was never going to be King, and he knew it. It was an era dominated by the Catholic Church and "Nobilty" and only a contender with a legitimate claim to the throne was going to be acceptable. We have to remind ourselves that every acre was controlled if not owned by "the nobility" on one side or the other. The common folk were never going to be allowed their choice of King.
As a young lad I was made more aware of Bruce than Wallace and became a Bruce man. Later in life I moved slowly towards Wallace as I learned more of Scots history. In the end I have a more affection for Wallace, Bruce following. Regardless, each was, in their own way responsible for kindling. and keeping alive, the strongest desires for independence.
A very important point to make. I was talking to my son about this just the other day I'm as much of a Bruce-booster as anybody, but it's absurd that the Battle of Roslin is so unappreciated.
I think Roslin doesn't get the Credit it deserves simply coz John Comyn the one that the Bruce Murdered and Simon Frazer who led it got their role downplayed by The Bruce Family, simply coz they hated each other. Both rivals for the Crown, Not much remains in Scotland about Battle probably through Robert becoming king and getting rid of a lot of documentation about it. Most of what we know is from English chronicles but no doubt it was one hell of a fight for Comyn & Frazer and the Scots footsoldiers to overcome that and win all 3, I guess those better English weapons left over from first battle helped the Scots a lot. Imagine being a Scot fighting with the English at Roslin, No quarter was given, even English/Scots prisoners got murdered simply coz John Comyns small force only had enough men to fight instead of wasting hundreds of much needed soldiers having to guard the prisoners. Brutal for us but normal enough for time especially when defending your Country.
Robert the Bruce gave Henry de Bohun a splitting headache and his continuing under such trying times showed incredible inner strength and fortitude, but William Wallace is my choice. He was made Lord Protector of Scotland near where I was born. I am a proud Scot even though I left there as a nipper. I still have family there. Keep up the great work Bruce, I have only just found your channel and it is great to get history with a bit of humour.

So I researched the true history and fell I love with scottish history and the story of the true braveheart heart ' Robert the Bruce'. Been to stirling,Falkirk and bannockburn twice and loved it, but I'm Wallace fan more xxx

Excellent video. I can’t believe I’ve never been taught about this battle. Loving the channel, it has really inspired me to start visiting these places.
I love them both equally. Wallace liberated my home city of Aberdeen when he crossed the river Dee with help from the people of the fishing village of Torry. Killed the English raided their ships and burned them in the harbour. The Bruce and his men entered the city at night with help from the gate keepers their password was 'Bon Accord' the city motto to this day and there's magnificent statues of those two great men in the heart of the city.
Well...Good King Robert the Bruce it is. He gave the lands of Stockethill to the people of Aberdeen in 1319 where the city Hospital is now and the Goodwill fund to help the people in their hardship, that's still used to this day. A reward for sheltering him when he was an outlaw.
At the end of the day Aberdeen was very important because of the Blackfriars and Greyfriars and Carmelite monks there. Both Wallace and the Bruce especially had the nod from bishop Wishart of Glasgow and Lambeton of St Andrews who played a huge part ( the church and the soul of Scotland was the same thing ) with the Templars who had a house in the city and in Maryculter. Wallace was more of of a 'Up lads and at em'. The Bruce was a very shrewd and political mover.
I read a book 40+ odd years ago by Nigel Tranter on William Wallace. I was so affected by the book he became the biggest Scottish hero for me. I am not Scottish. But he became my hero. Since then I always maintain that Wallace was the biggest hero of the day. I even feel emotional thinking about it. Braveheart versus the book, I say the book.
And he still lives, drawing heroes from the ages to him for the final battle in the war between light and darkness, for this was not so much about sovereignty, but personal freedom, and the right to be who you are, and true to truth itself. To be so, we must hearken to the Voice of the Spirit, and become selfless servants of the Almighty Father. And this is why Braveheart was a hero, for he heard the Call from Above, and laid down his life for the task, despite the greater forces of his enemies, who had to use cunning above might, to destroy him. He is reincarnated for the final trumpet calls that blow to herald the Final Judgement of all men, and in his inner courage, and devotion to the one true God, helps other heroes draw together through the laws of homogeneous vibrations, whereby they can ascend above the dissolution point that comes to separate the men from the boys, for now all must reap what they have sown. Then the Kingdom of God can come into being, which is what Wallace really fought for all those years ago, which includes a true King who justly serves the people and the land, and I know, for I was there!
I thought I knew all our major battles with them lot but I’m very pleasantly surprised by this one. The amount of our battle tales where we are outnumbered and seemingly doomed that we rise up and win. Hearing these story’s remind me why I absolutely love our home, which is needed these days. Both men were amazing courage’s warriors but I have to say Wallace is my favorite by a hair, always has been, also let’s not forget about the great James “The Black” Douglas who comes at a close second imo, he was just as important as Wallace and the Bruce, these men have my respect 100%, they inspire me and Iv always been extremely interested and touched by what these men went through and did to win the there freedom
I only learned of this battle a few weeks ago. Really surprised it hasn't been given the respect and plaudits it deserves. I love Scottish history and from what I've watched and read, Comyn pledged fealty to Longshanks and after lerning of Roberts plan to rebel, Comyn was basically going to grass him up which would suit his own needs and ambitions to rule Scotland. So over all I'm glad Bruce did what he did. Wallace or Bruce? Wouldn't be one without the other I believe. I love them both ❤ 🏴
Class video, I’d never heard of the Battle of Roslin while learning about the Wars of Independence through primary and secondary school, interesting how it seems to be universally overlooked.
It just doesn't have the 'whatever' that makes an event well known - you only have to look at how Outlander skipped Falkirk Muir, the biggest battle of the '45! ...or how the battlefield close to my home - Pinkie Cleugh - seems almost unknown, especially compared to that of Prestonpans a couple of miles away! Pinkie Cleugh was the bloodiest battle on Scottish soil, or so I read, and was directly connected with the English attempt to force the child Mary, Queen of Scots, into marriage with Henry VIII's son. Mary herself, was forced to surrender to her rebel lords on the hill overlooking that same battlefield 20 years later. Once the lockdown is over, I'll have to have a wee wander over to Roslin...

I love these videos. I didn't know a thing about the battle of Roslin and it really makes me frustrated and sad that Scottish history wasn't taught (probably still is not taught) in Scottish schools. I imagine Bruce had to study the subject at university to become such an expert (don't know where the wonderful story-telling skills came from though). We went from Roman Britain straight to the French Revolution and Victorian social reforms in my school. I hope it's improving these days but there are many Scots whose past has been hidden from them by their own education system.
Didn’t know that much about the Battle of Roslin. Thank you for educating on this. It’s amazing how the Scots prevailed against the massive odds against them. This is a battle that should be in film. It is surprising also how many battle sites exist in the Scottish Borders where Wallace fought the English in the Ettrick/Selkirk Forest.
I am directly descending from John the red, my clan was forced to live in Cumbria following the near genocide of my clan. My grandmother used to tell me the story, the real story of my clan, and the service we gave to this land. Thank you for an almost honest telling of this story. When the power hungry norman loving debrock family said "the only good Cumming is a dead Cumming" they meant what they said, after murdering the true king of Scotland, he murdered his way north, very few of my ancestors survived the slaughter, men, women and children alike, burned out their homes, they spared no one they found. He was and is a traitor to Scotland, who was crowned by devious men for monetary reasons. My family should have been king's of this land, instead we were hunted, and hated and scattered to the winds. I used to laugh when i watched that work of fiction braveheart, if only people knew the truth about Scottish history. In short the wrong man was killed in that church in Melrose. Murdered under a flag of peace, by a maniacal foriegn terrorist. And who knows what could have happened if John the red hadnt went unarmed to parly with the Bruce. This country and its history could have been so much different. Thanks again for sticking to the facts.
I am not Neil . I am a roommate . So books say that King Robert Bruce wounded John Comyn and two other men killed him . So are you an ancestor of John Comyn ? I didn't know he had any descendants ? Have you posted your genealogy ? If so I would love to see it as I am a fan of Scottish history and Royalty .
If you need me to choose between the two, the story of Robert de Bruce is my absolute favorite. I don't think that I have ever read a story that was so much equal parts suffering and stoic victory.
Again you come to my rescue as I have often wondered what happened in those years! Very well told story. In fact, better than the books and classes I went to to research this stuff! Since you asked, I lean toward Wallace as he championed the original pick and truly seemed to do what he did for Scotland's people and not his own personal gain, but I admit to not knowing enough about this to say for certain. There's also no question that he would have climbed up the ladder had Comyn lived. The Bruce family went after Comyn's pick, then Comyn himself and then went after England when Edward defeated Wallace and proceded to execute him in such a horrific fashion as to send the Scottish a vile warning not to challenge him ever again! (Never challenge a Highlander that way! I know this for a fact!) Robert the Bruce, who was not a Highlander, was now able to take that anger and horror and use it to unify Highlanders, Lowlanders and nobility to turn Scotland around as a complete whole which freed the country. In that, he vindicates himself for a lot of crimes that he and his family perpetrated against his own nobility, ie. his own people. But one still has to wonder if he could have done it without the death of Wallace first. While my Highland friends and history buddies would say 'well, that's politics for ya!', this poor little churchmouse is also part Cherokee and her ancestors from both sides still say 'It takes the whole tribe to do it right!' Countries work best when the folks in charge listen to its needs instead of its greeds. Robert the Bruce figured that out. Perhaps the current politicians and nobility from around the world could also learn from this???
P.S. William Wallace, who more championed the common folks - rather than many of the so-called "nobles" who played big mansion monkey-boy politics switching sides and double-crossing each other - and the Scottish common folks! Ian Graeme, Andrew de Murray and Simon Frazer also did better.
Wallace- does he really deserve the glory that he gets, or is it mediaeval media hype? Either way, a genuine patriot. Bruce- undoubtedly won us independence, but out of his own personal aims and ambition. For me, it's the ordinary, unrecorded folk who deserve the credit. They had everything to lose but little to gain, yet they fought for what was right and prevailed against the odds. Thus it was then, and thus it shall be again. Nemo me impune lacessit.

I'm stunned I didn't know about this battle as a proud Fifer/Scot but it definitely highlights how history is written by the winners!
I’ve just recently come to these videos, I’ve always been fascinated by medieval history and being Scots , by Scottish history in particular. Fantastic stories told by an enthusiastic and knowledgable storyteller, a great thing to hear and see REAL stories and the real characters rather than the laughable pseudo history of Braveheart et al. My dad's entire family is Scottish except they have a French great grandmother and she married a good looking man named Benjamin Harris.. he died when he was 27 from some sorts road but I saw a picture of him.. my great-grandfather looked pretty identical to the young Sean Connery.. oh my goodness was the man just absolutely good looking.. all my dad knew was that my great grandfather got a sore throat in the spring and he died in the fall.. so I know it wasn't strep throat.. he was not a smoker, but that doesn't necessarily mean somebody can't get cancer.. dad didn't talk about him being in any pain and neither did my great grandma but but his throat hurt really bad and then he started running a fever in the fall and died shortly thereafter when she was pregnant with their third child. My mom's family is French Indian and I'm not 100% sure but I'm thinking that her mother was English or Scottish.. I say English because she was a Barton and they are all Soooo SHORT! EVERY ONE OF MY DAD'S SIDE OF THE FAMILY, EXCEPT MY DAD SISTER AND ONE GREAT AUNT, HAVE BEEN EXCEPTIONALLY PAUL AND WOMEN ARE FIGHTING 7 IN OR TALLER AND THE MEN 6'2" TO 6'5". IT'S NOT LIKE THAT IN MY MOM'S FAMILY AT ALL BECAUSE THE WOMEN ARE ABOUT 5 FT TALL AND MY MOTHER WAS THE TALLEST AT 5 FT 1 IN.. THE MEN ARE ABOUT 5 FT 8 IN.. IT'S BEYOND OBVIOUS THAT MY GRANDPARENTS WERE SCOTTISH ON MY DAD'S SIDE OF THE FAMILY EXCEPT FOR MY GREAT GRANDMA WHO WAS FRENCH AND I DON'T KNOW HOW SHE PUT UP WITH THEM.. SHE WAS A VERY PATIENT WOMAN AND LIVED UNTIL SHE WAS 100... MY GREAT-GRANDPARENTS WOULD EVEN SAY WORDS THAT WERE SCOTTISH SLANG OR GAELIC AND I GREW UP UNDERSTANDING IT EVEN IF THEY WERE JUST A COUPLE WORDS HERE AND THERE. I’m truly fascinated by ancient history and medieval in particular... so much for chivalry, life was brief, brutal and for most grindingly poor and unfair. Sitting here in the 21st century with modern views on the value of life it’s horrifying and compelling just how cheap life was to the privileged class back then , no welfare state , no organised medical facilities, mostly no recourse to law , when “might was right “.... all in all I prefer today’s society but like you am fascinated by this bygone era.
In a comfortable chair, just listening to The Battle of Roslin had me exhausted. One of the most unbelievable battles ever fought in my opinion. When all the odds were stacked against them. John Comyn and all the others Scot's that fought there must've fought like wolves.
While Clans Coordinator for my club in Boise, Idaho, I met and talked with the Chief of Clan Wallace in North America. Him and his men were quite impressive.
Living not far from Roslyn, I'm shocked that I've never heard of this battle. You may have a point though: the Victor always writes the histories ( in this case the Bruce). Bruce, the more of your videos I see, the more impressive you become. By the way: definitely William Wallace, despite everything, he was one of us, whereas the Bruce was definitely one of them, despite his common touch 🤔 🏴🥃🏴

I guess if you live there, you just assume that you will get to see it someday but if you travel, you pack it in!! As for a preference between the two men...... I cannot choose. Excellent. As to your question Wallace or Bruce? There are two statues at the front of Edinburgh castle, one is not higher or larger than the other..... "Scots Wah Hae" one could have not succeeded without the other. Time for another vote.

King Robert Bruce, Sir William Wallace; which was the most important, which was the greatest. They were both freedom fighters who sacrificed everything for the people of Scotland. The two men did know each other and I do believe that Bruce took his inspiration from Wallace. I believe that Wallace was the spark and Bruce was the fire that freed Scotland from the English. Without the spark there can be no fire and without the fire no freedom. Robert Bruce did have other people who helped to mold him into the man he became. The King of England Richard and the Bruce’s grandfather, We’re maybe his greatest influence as a young man. God bless all who love Scotland’s history.
Just came across this one - I’ve spent most of my life in Midlothian, grew up here and went to school about 4 or 5 miles away from the battle site. The battle was never so much as mentioned in the entire of my school life - the only reason I’d heard of the Battle of Roslin was a wee crossed swords mark on the OS maps of the area. I don’t know if it’s still the case, but there was a real issue when I was wee where pre-union history just didn’t exist in schools. Even now, I could tell you more about Henry VIII than about any Scottish king from a similar period… a legacy of control from the Scottish Office before devolution, I’d guess.
I tell you what i would rather have seen someone like Gerard Butler play the Bruce in outlaw king than chris pine.nothing against chris pine but there’s plenty of good Scottish actors out there.why not go the extra mile to get one to play the main role?

I attended Roslin Primary school back in the 50's I used to collect bird's eggs. The best place to get Jackdaw eggs was a place just outside Roslin called 'Mount Marle' I used to wonder at the name because it wasn't a hill or a mountain but a cliff face on the Esk river. I've heard that the Name; Marle was the commander of the third English force, and when the battle turned in the Scots favour, He was told: "Mount Marle for the battle is lost." Nice job on the doco, BTW And you are correct History is written by the victors, Robert Le Brus.

He never tarnished anybody's name, Also there was mare Scots who gave their lives fighting and dying wae Wallace. We will never know there Names who died in there thousands on the Battlefield or given same fate as Wallace if captured alive, Noble or Common it didn't matter, It was still hung,drawn and quartered...
I read a book called The Bruce Trilogy by Nigel Tranter, so always liked the Bruce. Fantastic book loved it so much read every Tranter book on Scottish historical characters My library had which was a lot. I recommend every book the guy wrote, you really get an experience of scots history the movies can not give you.
I grew up a few miles from there and, almost half a decade later, this is the first I've ever heard about this battle. My guess would be "let's not talk about the Comyns" as the reason. Your point about squabbles at the top is very well made. Would that it were not.
Nice one on a untold part of Scotland history. The Wallace/Bruce debate. The achievements of Wallace should never be underestimated, but the truth is he would have been ineffective without Andrew Murray. Wallace was lead by his heart a warrior in the truest scene. Bruce was a master tactician a warrior King. Don't know if you've covered the story of Murray.

BBC should seriously consider picking this up for series. Production value and presenting skills are excellent, fascinating subject delivered with genuine insight and enthusiasm.
Wallace was sincere, loyal, steadfast, valiant, and more courageous and braver than the others, for he was a real, trustworthy hero, and leader. Most of those who followed him were commoners, who saw in him a protector from the thugs of the time, namely, the nobles and kings of Scotland and England! To be a true King, a man must have the qualities and virtues necessary for such an undertaking, and sadly, this is rarely to be found, nor even aspired to, through the many ages of mankind. In Wallace, these qualities were plentiful, even overflowing, and when he screamed freedom, he meant it, unlike the many fork-tongued of those days, and these too. I would gladly follow him into battle, if it was worth fighting for, and lay down my life, for such men will always inspire loyalty and commitment.
Wallace was never going to be King, and he knew it. It was an era dominated by the Catholic Church and "Nobilty" and only a contender with a legitimate claim to the throne was going to be acceptable. We have to remind ourselves that every acre was controlled if not owned by "the nobility" on one side or the other. The common folk were never going to be allowed their choice of King.
As a young lad I was made more aware of Bruce than Wallace and became a Bruce man. Later in life I moved slowly towards Wallace as I learned more of Scots history. In the end I have a more affection for Wallace, Bruce following. Regardless, each was, in their own way responsible for kindling. and keeping alive, the strongest desires for independence.
A very important point to make. I was talking to my son about this just the other day I'm as much of a Bruce-booster as anybody, but it's absurd that the Battle of Roslin is so unappreciated.
I think Roslin doesn't get the Credit it deserves simply coz John Comyn the one that the Bruce Murdered and Simon Frazer who led it got their role downplayed by The Bruce Family, simply coz they hated each other. Both rivals for the Crown, Not much remains in Scotland about Battle probably through Robert becoming king and getting rid of a lot of documentation about it. Most of what we know is from English chronicles but no doubt it was one hell of a fight for Comyn & Frazer and the Scots footsoldiers to overcome that and win all 3, I guess those better English weapons left over from first battle helped the Scots a lot. Imagine being a Scot fighting with the English at Roslin, No quarter was given, even English/Scots prisoners got murdered simply coz John Comyns small force only had enough men to fight instead of wasting hundreds of much needed soldiers having to guard the prisoners. Brutal for us but normal enough for time especially when defending your Country.

Robert the Bruce gave Henry de Bohun a splitting headache and his continuing under such trying times showed incredible inner strength and fortitude, but William Wallace is my choice. He was made Lord Protector of Scotland near where I was born. I am a proud Scot even though I left there as a nipper. I still have family there. Keep up the great work Bruce, I have only just found your channel and it is great to get history with a bit of humour.

I love them both equally. Wallace liberated my home city of Aberdeen when he crossed the river Dee with help from the people of the fishing village of Torry. Killed the English raided their ships and burned them in the harbour.
The Bruce and his men entered the city at night with help from the gate keepers their password was 'Bon Accord' the city motto to this day and there's magnificent statues of those two great men in the heart of the city.

Well...Good King Robert the Bruce it is. He gave the lands of Stockethill to the people of Aberdeen in 1319 where the city Hospital is now and the Goodwill fund to help the people in their hardship, that's still used to this day. A reward for sheltering him when he was an outlaw.
Wallace fourth part is buried in the wall of St Machar's cathedral in Old Aberdeen. The Wallace star is carved in stone work.
At the end of the day Aberdeen was very important because of the Blackfriars and Greyfriars and Carmelite monks there. Both Wallace and the Bruce especially had the nod from bishop Wishart of Glasgow and Lambeton of St Andrews who played a huge part ( the church and the soul of Scotland was the same thing ) with the Templars who had a house in the city and in Maryculter. Wallace was more of of a 'Up lads and at em'. The Bruce was a very shrewd and political mover.

I read a book 40+ odd years ago by Nigel Tranter on William Wallace. I was so affected by the book he became the biggest Scottish hero for me. I am not Scottish. But he became my hero. Since then I always maintain that Wallace was the biggest hero of the day. I even feel emotional thinking about it. Braveheart versus the book, I say the book.
And he still lives, drawing heroes from the ages to him for the final battle in the war between light and darkness, for this was not so much about sovereignty, but personal freedom, and the right to be who you are, and true to truth itself. To be so, we must hearken to the Voice of the Spirit, and become selfless servants of the Almighty Father. And this is why Braveheart was a hero, for he heard the Call from Above, and laid down his life for the task, despite the greater forces of his enemies, who had to use cunning above might, to destroy him. He is reincarnated for the final trumpet calls that blow to herald the Final Judgement of all men, and in his inner courage, and devotion to the one true God, helps other heroes draw together through the laws of homogeneous vibrations, whereby they can ascend above the dissolution point that comes to separate the men from the boys, for now all must reap what they have sown. Then the Kingdom of God can come into being, which is what Wallace really fought for all those years ago, which includes a true King who justly serves the people and the land, and I know, for I was there!
I thought I knew all our major battles with them lot but I’m very pleasantly surprised by this one. The amount of our battle tales where we are outnumbered and seemingly doomed that we rise up and win. Hearing these story’s remind me why I absolutely love our home, which is needed these days. It depends what you call "heavy calvary". I will investigate about it and try to answer. First all, Alexander's battle was in Asia.

Both men were amazing courage’s warriors but I have to say Wallace is my favorite by a hair, always has been, also let’s not forget about the great James “The Black” Douglas who comes at a close second imo, he was just as important as Wallace and the Bruce, these men have my respect 100%, they inspire me and Iv always been extremely interested and touched by what these men went through and did to win the there freedom

I only learned of this battle a few weeks ago. Really surprised it hasn't been given the respect and plaudits it deserves. I love Scottish history and from what I've watched and read, Comyn pledged fealty to Longshanks and after lerning of Roberts plan to rebel, Comyn was basically going to grass him up which would suit his own needs and ambitions to rule Scotland. So over all I'm glad Bruce did what he did.

Class video, I’d never heard of the Battle of Roslin while learning about the Wars of Independence through primary and secondary school, interesting how it seems to be universally overlooked.

It just doesn't have the 'whatever' that makes an event well known - you only have to look at how Outlander skipped Falkirk Muir, the biggest battle of the '45!
...or how the battlefield close to my home - Pinkie Cleugh - seems almost unknown, especially compared to that of Prestonpans a couple of miles away!
Pinkie Cleugh was the bloodiest battle on Scottish soil, or so I read, and was directly connected with the English attempt to force the child Mary, Queen of Scots, into marriage with Henry VIII's son. Mary herself, was forced to surrender to her rebel lords on the hill overlooking that same battlefield 20 years later.
Once the lockdown is over, I'll have to have a wee wander over to Roslin...

I love these videos. I didn't know a thing about the battle of Roslin and it really makes me frustrated and sad that Scottish history wasn't taught (probably still is not taught) in Scottish schools. I imagine Bruce had to study the subject at university to become such an expert (don't know where the wonderful story-telling skills came from though). We went from Roman Britain straight to the French Revolution and Victorian social reforms in my school. I hope it's improving these days but there are many Scots whose past has been hidden from them by their own education system.
We need to be learning from the past, and picking the right future for this dynamic country!

Didn’t know that much about the Battle of Roslin. Thank you for educating on this. It’s amazing how the Scots prevailed against the massive odds against them. This is a battle that should be in film. It is surprising also how many battle sites exist in the Scottish Borders where Wallace fought the English in the Ettrick/Selkirk Forest.
I am directly descending from John the red, my clan was forced to live in Cumbria following the near genocide of my clan. My grandmother used to tell me the story, the real story of my clan, and the service we gave to this land. Thank you for an almost honest telling of this story. When the power hungry norman loving debrock family said "the only good Cumming is a dead Cumming" they meant what they said, after murdering the true king of Scotland, he murdered his way north, very few of my ancestors survived the slaughter, men, women and children alike, burned out their homes, they spared no one they found. He was and is a traitor to Scotland, who was crowned by devious men for monetary reasons. My family should have been king's of this land, instead we were hunted, and hated and scattered to the winds. I used to laugh when i watched that work of fiction braveheart, if only people knew the truth about Scottish history. In short the wrong man was killed in that church in Melrose. Murdered under a flag of peace, by a maniacal foriegn terrorist. And who knows what could have happened if John the red hadnt went unarmed to parly with the Bruce. This country and its history could have been so much different. Thanks again for sticking to the facts.

If you need me to choose between the two, the story of Robert de Bruce is my absolute favorite. I don't think that I have ever read a story that was so much equal parts suffering and stoic victory.
Again you come to my rescue as I have often wondered what happened in those years! Very well told story. In fact, better than the books and classes I went to to research this stuff! Since you asked, I lean toward Wallace as he championed the original pick and truly seemed to do what he did for Scotland's people and not his own personal gain, but I admit to not knowing enough about this to say for certain. There's also no question that he would have climbed up the ladder had Comyn lived. The Bruce family went after Comyn's pick, then Comyn himself and then went after England when Edward defeated Wallace and proceded to execute him in such a horrific fashion as to send the Scottish a vile warning not to challenge him ever again! (Never challenge a Highlander that way! I know this for a fact!) Robert the Bruce, who was not a Highlander, was now able to take that anger and horror and use it to unify Highlanders, Lowlanders and nobility to turn Scotland around as a complete whole which freed the country. In that, he vindicates himself for a lot of crimes that he and his family perpetrated against his own nobility, ie. his own people. But one still has to wonder if he could have done it without the death of Wallace first. While my Highland friends and history buddies would say 'well, that's politics for ya!', this poor little churchmouse is also part Cherokee and her ancestors from both sides still say 'It takes the whole tribe to do it right!' Countries work best when the folks in charge listen to its needs instead of its greeds. Robert the Bruce figured that out. Perhaps the current politicians and nobility from around the world could also learn from this???

Wallace- does he really deserve the glory that he gets, or is it mediaeval media hype? Either way, a genuine patriot. Bruce- undoubtedly won us independence, but out of his own personal aims and ambition.
For me, it's the ordinary, unrecorded folk who deserve the credit. They had everything to lose but little to gain, yet they fought for what was right and prevailed against the odds. Thus it was then, and thus it shall be again.

I’ve just recently come to these videos, I’ve always been fascinated by medieval history and being Scots , by Scottish history in particular. Fantastic stories told by an enthusiastic and knowledgable storyteller, a great thing to hear and see REAL stories and the real characters rather than the laughable pseudo history of Braveheart et al. My dad's entire family is Scottish except they have a French great grandmother and she married a good looking man named Benjamin Harris.. he died when he was 27 from some sorts road but I saw a picture of him.. my great-grandfather looked pretty identical to the young Sean Connery.. oh my goodness was the man just absolutely good looking.. all my dad knew was that my great grandfather got a sore throat in the spring and he died in the fall.. so I know it wasn't strep throat.. he was not a smoker, but that doesn't necessarily mean somebody can't get cancer.. dad didn't talk about him being in any pain and neither did my great grandma but but his throat hurt really bad and then he started running a fever in the fall and died shortly thereafter when she was pregnant with their third child.
My mom's family is French Indian and I'm not 100% sure but I'm thinking that her mother was English or Scottish.. I say English because she was a Barton and they are all Soooo SHORT! EVERY ONE OF MY DAD'S SIDE OF THE FAMILY, EXCEPT MY DAD SISTER AND ONE GREAT AUNT, HAVE BEEN EXCEPTIONALLY PAUL AND WOMEN ARE FIGHTING 7 IN OR TALLER AND THE MEN 6'2" TO 6'5". IT'S NOT LIKE THAT IN MY MOM'S FAMILY AT ALL BECAUSE THE WOMEN ARE ABOUT 5 FT TALL AND MY MOTHER WAS THE TALLEST AT 5 FT 1 IN.. THE MEN ARE ABOUT 5 FT 8 IN..
IT'S BEYOND OBVIOUS THAT MY GRANDPARENTS WERE SCOTTISH ON MY DAD'S SIDE OF THE FAMILY EXCEPT FOR MY GREAT GRANDMA WHO WAS FRENCH AND I DON'T KNOW HOW SHE PUT UP WITH THEM.. SHE WAS A VERY PATIENT WOMAN AND LIVED UNTIL SHE WAS 100... MY GREAT-GRANDPARENTS WOULD EVEN SAY WORDS THAT WERE SCOTTISH SLANG OR GAELIC AND I GREW UP UNDERSTANDING IT EVEN IF THEY WERE JUST A COUPLE WORDS HERE AND THERE. THAT'S MY OPINION AND I'M SURE THAT BEFORE SCOTLAND ACTUALLY HAD A LEGITIMATE KING AGAIN, both countries would go over the border and they would raid one another's villages..

I’m truly fascinated by ancient history and medieval in particular... so much for chivalry, life was brief, brutal and for most grindingly poor and unfair. Sitting here in the 21st century with modern views on the value of life it’s horrifying and compelling just how cheap life was to the privileged class back then , no welfare state , no organised medical facilities, mostly no recourse to law , when “might was right “.... all in all I prefer today’s society but like you am fascinated by this bygone era.

In a comfortable chair, just listening to The Battle of Roslin had me exhausted. One of the most unbelievable battles ever fought in my opinion. When all the odds were stacked against them. John Comyn and all the others Scot's that fought there must've fought like wolves.
While Clans Coordinator for my club in Boise, Idaho, I met and talked with the Chief of Clan Wallace in North America. Him and his men were quite impressive.

Living not far from Roslyn, I'm shocked that I've never heard of this battle. You may have a point though: the Victor always writes the histories ( in this case the Bruce).

Both are equally important. If Andrew de Moray hadn't died at or shortly after Stirling Bridge, perhaps he may have been a part of the conversation
King Robert Bruce, Sir William Wallace; which was the most important, which was the greatest. They were both freedom fighters who sacrificed everything for the people of Scotland.
The two men did know each other and I do believe that Bruce took his inspiration from Wallace.
I believe that Wallace was the spark and Bruce was the fire that freed Scotland from the English. Without the spark there can be no fire and without the fire no freedom.
Robert Bruce did have other people who helped to mold him into the man he became. The King of England Richard and the Bruce’s grandfather, We’re maybe his greatest influence as a young man.

Just came across this one - I’ve spent most of my life in Midlothian, grew up here and went to school about 4 or 5 miles away from the battle site. The battle was never so much as mentioned in the entire of my school life - the only reason I’d heard of the Battle of Roslin was a wee crossed swords mark on the OS maps of the area. I don’t know if it’s still the case, but there was a real issue when I was wee where pre-union history just didn’t exist in schools. Even now, I could tell you more about Henry VIII than about any Scottish king from a similar period… a legacy of control from the Scottish Office before devolution, I’d guess.

I tell you what i would rather have seen someone like Gerard Butler play the Bruce in outlaw king than chris pine.nothing against chris pine but there’s plenty of good Scottish actors out there.why not go the extra mile to get one to play the main role?

I attended Roslin Primary school back in the 50's I used to collect bird's eggs. The best place to get Jackdaw eggs was a place just outside Roslin called 'Mount Marle' I used to wonder at the name because it wasn't a hill or a mountain but a cliff face on the Esk river. I've heard that the Name; Marle was the commander of the third English force, and when the battle turned in the Scots favour, He was told: "Mount Marle for the battle is lost." Nice job on the doco, BTW And you are correct History is written by the victors, Robert Le Brus.

As a Wallace I’m a bit bias towards sir William lord high protector but don’t tarnish Wallace’s memory by mentioning braveheart outlaw king was amazing depiction of the Bruce álba gú bráth
He never tarnished anybody's name, Also there was mare Scots who gave their lives fighting and dying wae Wallace. We will never know there Names who died in there thousands on the Battlefield or given same fate as Wallace if captured alive, Noble or Common it didn't matter, It was still hung,drawn and quartered...
That would make an amazing film! Jesus 3 battles!! That's endurance!!!!
I read a book called The Bruce Trilogy by Nigel Tranter, so always liked the Bruce. Fantastic book loved it so much read every Tranter book on Scottish historical characters My library had which was a lot. I recommend every book the guy wrote, you really get an experience of scots history the movies can not give you.

I grew up a few miles from there and, almost half a decade later, this is the first I've ever heard about this battle. My guess would be "let's not talk about the Comyns" as the reason. Your point about squabbles at the top is very well made. Would that it were not.

Wallace was lead by his heart a warrior in the truest scene.
Bruce was a master tactician a warrior King.
