When I listen to songs like The Rain Song and Ten Years Gone it makes me wonder how these complex compositions came to Jimmy's head in the first place. Great version. You nailed the solo
Good thought… many musicians have told that they imagine a place first, then the mood and the feeling….if you are in the right place mentally then it would flow….the rest is matter of details . Refinement….David Gilmore described Shine on you crazy diamond…. While doing sound check etc he randomly played those magical 3 notes….. and others said wait…play that again….and the whole composition was built around that …and the whole album around that…then came the lyrics….the concept…. Necessity is the mother of Invention……but Serendipity is often the mother of creation….the great muse mother likes random sex with Time and Chance…often at the same time….enjoy.
So utterly amazing, sometimes mind blowing, the amount of musical creation and composition that came from that era. Long story short, I don`t think we will ever see that quality of rock and progressive rock ever again. As the music scene technically advanced, the necessity of creation and imagination decreased. So blessed to have lived in that musical era. @@neoaureus
First time in my life I've ever wished I had a Telecaster instead of a Strat. Thanks for this man! This song means a lot to me right now and I'm really grateful you did this video so I can soak in Jimmy's work.
This song has such a beautiful solo, how did Jimmy Page develop this? It really highlights how brave he plays, there is no set boundary. And when playing live he was adding and subtracting parts of the solos. So much light and shade in his playing
Hi Howard! Your lessons are life changing! You're helping me so much as I'm rediscovering what I thought were long lost skills. Such a joyful thing! Your lessons are super amazing! Do you have a video or Tab for the chord section that plays behind the solo? Thank you again, so, so much! Jimmy is my spirit animal.
You're a Godsend. I had a Zep songbook when I was first learning and it was just wrong. Almost as if they had transcribed the wrong band. Your vids are so helpful.
Thanks and good lesson.. I have been trying to figure out the part between the lyrics to the chorus and you made it clear!! And a great song...and your right .many parts that's why I love to play zep.!!
“ Excellent lesson. No biggie but not sure that is called an F6 with that open e first string included? More likely a Dm9 , as d-a-f constitutes a Dm, with an added e note being the 9th degree from D in the ‘Circle of Fifths’.
Thankyou Howard - I am slowley learning this difficult song -from your video --its in my head 24 /7 ! -but my question is ----is there a difference between a PHASE SHIFTER ---and a PITCH SHIFTER ?==or are they one and the same FX sound -??---ie at the final solo on Ten yrs gone ---Page uses a weird double octave FX --HOW DO I GET A SIMILAR SOUND ?---Iam afraid I do not know much of Robin Trower ---ONLY Hendrix SRV Page etc !---===
1:23. Howard I respect your playing and have learned a ton from you. I've been playing this song for decades and I'm always checking my work on various songs on YT. Besides I like hearing other players tackle great songs. I would modify your lead in the "Loop" at the timestamp I opened this comment with. The three notes on the D string *I* play as 0-3-2, or D-F-E, followed by the open-A like you do. Give it a whirl. It works both ways but I'm certain that's how Jimmy does it. I've always played it this way and tried to watch some live Zep and Black Crowes covers of it. See what you think. See if it's accurate to your ears relative to the orig. Thanks again. (Also - Ever notice how the double stops leading into the solo were loosely based on Band on the Run? BotR was 1973 and TYG was 1974. Jimmy always had his ear to his contemporary's playing)
Actually... over the years I've always played it with the open D string, which rings true with the recording. But I spotted a Page & Plant live performance years ago, and he played it 2-3-2... I kinda liked it, so I included in the video. There are so many online showing it the other way. But with Page - his live "renditions" could be very different lol! Thanks for watching, and thanks for your input - much appreciated :-)
@@247GuitarwithHowardHart I have been playing guitar 2+ years now (played drums for 30 years) and am now starting to tackle soloing. Have spent the time up till now learning the fretboard and theory. Amazing instrument. I wish I had been playing guitar all these years. I just bought a Tele! I have a jazz guitar teacher( don’t really play jazz but he is the best in the area and it is definitely expanding my knowledge) and have watched a ton of videos but I have not come across any like yours. So concise and clear and to the point with really fine playing. I will be buying your classes and supporting. Thanks again!
Great job, especially liked the tone. Are you using pedals for the effects and turning them on and off with foot pedals or did you add it during post production with your DAW? If your using pedals, which ones and what amp? Thanks great job.
For this video, the Tele was recorded DI into the board. The signal was split - and I actually used an old DigiTech processor for the phasing and distortion. It's the only thing I could find to get this particular sound! I think I applied a pinch of chorusing to the clean channel as well. Thanx so much for checking it out :-)
So at 3min 35 seconds --near the end--what is that FX you are playing in the final outro solo ? A PTCH SHIFTER ?/(played over the illustrated AMAJ 7 /DMAG 7 /C /CMAJ7 CHORDS )? sounds great ! --maybe an octave divider ?

Thanks so much! I;m glad you enjoyed the video... Yeah, I'm kind of on a "Tele Binge" right now :-)
Hi Randall, I believe i read somewhere that Page actually used a strat on that recording. Now of the few times, from what I've heard.

Hi Howard I’m a 75 year old frustrated guitarist just want to say a massive thank you for posting this! I will be trying my very best to learn this…..
You can do it :-)
Your playing is beautiful. Putting the tab in there is a big help too. Thank you so much!
Thank you too!
Thank you for just posting a simple nice video without all the fluff other videos have! Just guitar and tab. very nice
Great how you just present the tabs and chords without all the talk and step beats. I learned it in 20 minutes thanks to your simplicity. Bravo.
Thanx so much for watching. I'm glad you found it helpful :-)
My favorite Zeppelin tune of them all! ❤️
man i've broken the replay button, i can't get enough of this song! thanks a LOT
50 years I've been trying to figure out how to play the intro chords ---thankyou so much Howard --and this is the best solo ever !
I forgot how beautiful Page's solo was, until I stumbled on this tutorial. Very motivating to learn it myself, thanks!
Have fun! And thanks :-)
Your playing is so tasteful and accurate... beautiful tone too. Well done!!

Page wrote a beautiful song here.
The riff was composed by JPJ
I had forgotten what a creative songwriter he was.

Really great lesson, love being able to see the tab and also simultaneously see it being played, makes a HUGE difference, thanks for the great job!!
Man that tone will kill me!! You rocks
Major 7 chords always create this melancholic vibe, especially when played in succession.
Great video. You hit that tone really well especially on the heavier bit. My favourite zeppelin song
Wow. What an amazing cover. Excellent sound.
Thank you :-)
Wow that tone in the solo!
I just finished The Rain Song. This is next on my list. Thank you!
You play this exactly as I learned it as a teen back in the 70's, I know that makes me old but thanks for conformation:)
Very nice! Thank you! Makes me wonder sometimes how Jimmy Page came up with these creative and so well put together patterns! Genius is the word!
Excellent! One of best Led Zep´s, song, in my opinion, Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it... It's one of my favorites as well
It's simply very difficult brings the best zeppelin songs, hahaha. A lot of masterpieces in all albums.
Hands down the most beautiful version I have ever heard.. Thank you!
Awesome lesson. No time wasted over teaching!!!!!
Good job 👍
Some one who plays it right thank you!
Another great Zep lesson and beautifully played too, such a lovely song, thanks Howard.
Ten Years Gone showed a glimpse of the writing style he used later with The Firm. Great maj 7th chords.

Thanks... I actually wanted to do some of the outro stuff, but I think the video would have been to lengthy. Maybe I'll do a follow-up. Thanks again!
I have heard this song covered by others... All good, want to point out that Robert P's vocals were truly excellent.
Page aways had a unique way of melding beautiful, classical sounding guitar with driving rock and roll power chords.
Couldn't agree more!
Wonderful lesson thanks much Howard - great playing

Hey Howard. This song is so cool and you have done a great job with this video. Thanks for the instruction.
