Ten years gone is a brilliant example of how Jimmy used what he called, "Light and dark" when playing. The different textures of the song. A masterpiece.
yeah so many people trash his solo playing. and while he's not a technical shredder with solos his rhythm parts and riffs are so classic. i'm almost positive the solo lead players can't come up with riffs, compositions and songs like Jimmy could.

The happiness that consumes me when I see that Carl has made a lesson for a song I’m trying to learn is unimaginable, thank you for sharing your musical talent with us all these years!
Ben Reid Exactly. This channel is great for those who can’t quite learn every song by ear, but who don’t need a 5 minute explanation of a 10 second guitar part.
Agreed it’s quick, I have to slow the video down. Most of the time it’s pretty clear, but there is a few parts where he talks really quickly. But no problem as I can rewind the video!
I gotta say that the part you cover starting a 8:40 has to about the most beautiful guitar work I have ever heard. I'm blown away how he does it two different ways as well. There will be nobody like this guy. Pure guitar genius. How in the world did he come up with this stuff? By the way, incredible job on this lesson. It was very concise and clear. Really enjoyed it.
He’s jimmy fuckin page in my opinion the greatest composer in rock history, when you look at his catalog of work nobody comes close and on top of that all the insane number of different tunings just baffles me like how in the hell do you reach such a level of mastery you understand all that?
I have admired and cherished Physical Graffiti for decades, yet never took the time to learn any songs from it, due to trying to understand theory by practicing scales and learning roots. With this lesson, and Houses of the Holy lesson, you have rectified that, to my utter joy. Thank you for that, Sir. You, Mark, are, IMHO, the best teacher on here. After picking your brain for years, I just subscribed. Thank you again, for the expert help. Respectfully, Randy
The clean beautiful part of this song touches your soul.. very well done Carl. You are a gift from God to us.. i’m 53 years old now and never had RUclips when I was learning.. I basically learned everything by ear.. Thank you..I wish you were my neighbor.. I would be a incredible guitar player now like you if you were my neighbor teaching me.
LOL, I gotta laugh at the comments on here crediting Carl for this.... how about you go get the album and check it out in its true setting.... The album is Physical Graffiti. The guitarist is Jimmy Page.... im sure you have heard of him somewhere....
Teaching guitar is harder than playing but you make it look easy. I can imagine that the difficulty is compounded when your student is 645,000 unseen viewers. Keep these videos coming as they are much appreciated!
also when gets to the part at 7:30 after the solo, you have to hit both the E and A strings together open before playing into the parts and after you hit citar sounding note hit it again, if that makes sense.
A nice thing i tried out was when you strum the first a chord loud, i deleted the pinky or ring finger on the b and hammered on. It sounds quite beautiful in my opinion
thanks Carl, i have only been playing 2 months and have listened to this video hundreds of times. you make it look so easy. maybe i should try an easier song but this is my all time fav zeppelin tune. thanks for sharing :)
Well, i always thought that you learn easier by tackling harder to play songs, but that's just me :) This song ain't to hard except that diminished (was it F#dim ?) i remember having hard time playing it at the time on the 5th fret
Yeah drop D is not needed. Main riff after the quiet intro play it with the low E open and then first fret and then the rest is the same as far as i can see. Couldn't be bothered to go to drop D for that.
when it gets to the "did you ever really need somebody, and really need em bad" just doesn't sound right unless that chord is strummed form the bottom up with the drop d anchoring the bottom end
You only have one note wrong on the riff leading to the chorus. There are 7 notes. The fifth note is a D then hammered to the F(sixth note). You are playing an E. I know that it's very minute, but in the interest of total accuracy.... Having said that, this is the best tutorial of this song in existence.
Thanks Carl. I always enjoy your lessons. Very thorough and easy to understand. I didn't say easy to play. LOL. just easy to understand.. Much appreciated.
For those who, like me, struggled a bit with this, this is how I do it and I find it a lot easier. First chord after the A, I bar across the first fret and and then use my middle and ring finger for the G and E string. Then I move the bar up to the 7th fret, and keep the bar but switch fingers for the 5th. To be honest, I add the pinky to the B after the first strum, it makes very little difference. The chorus? Bar as well. Just keep the bar at 2nd fret and add the other strings accordingly. Idk if you prefer it this way but is it way easier for me at least.
I know this is an older video but thank you for doing this ive always wanted to know this song progression and thanks to you i now know it and enjoy playing it.
ive seen alot of other people do a walk up of barre chords after the picking pattern A but it sounds better when you go to Adim after A instead of walking up the barre chords you are teaching us to go down on if that makes sense
luv this tune ...that drop d thing had me meesd up fo amin...lol thanks for generously giving your free time to teach freezemyzer...thats very cool...u always hav optimal angle to view what fretting hand is doing...well most of the time..tis difficult enuf to learn, when theres a question as to wher the fretting flanges go..that helps ALoT....
Zachary Kariotis Tune the top string downward from an E one whole step to a D. Before you start. Tune your guitar normally.Notice how your top E string (6th string) and the bottom E string (1st string) are tuned together and sound the same, only the top E is an octave lower (deeper in sound) than the bottom E string, when tuned correctly? When you tune the top E (6th string) down to D, the top string gets deeper in sound and eventually will come in tune with the “open D string” (4th string from the bottom). When tuned properly you can pluck the top string (now tuned to D) and the open D string (string 4) together. They will now be one octave apart. Just like when previously the two E strings where tuned together. Now there are two D strings tuned together. Remember, when using the top string to make chords you will need to make different finger configuration, usually “barring” the index and or ring finger across the top four strings at the same time. He doesn’t seem to bar the fret on this song not sure why he would tune down. Other heavy bands use this technique to get heavier sounds.
Enjoy the 3 frames of vantage points but it would be great if the top right frame was looking down on your fret hand so I can what you see when fretting. Thanks for doing great songs
Great job on the chords!- Great song, the chorus is actually pretty clean, with different effects, like a flange or phase- I think with Bonzo & JPJones joining in , it's so powerful, it seems like it needs distortion. Keep in mind that your critic is your best friend, & I did learn from your excellent tutorial, maybe u were shortcutting thru the bridge with the one finger power chords, & required drop D part, but I wasn't feeling the groove in your interpretation, only bcuz you weren't strumming out the G chord enough times, once it gets to the G- it's da-da-dum da-dum da-dum da-da- (Drop D), I'm sure u nail it when u play along with the song- thanks again!!
