  • Luxury Vs Affordable Makeup Brush BATTLE | Sonia G, Rephr and Mac Vs Sigma, Bdellium, Zoeva and MORE!
    Hi lovelies,
I've fairly recently entered into the luxury makeup brush arena, so I was very curious to try these brushes up against the brushes I used to use that are far more affordable and easier to get my hands on to see if there really is a big difference between the likes of Sonia G and Sigma!

    HAIR COLOUR:
I dye my own hair at home using L'oreal casting creme gloss 360 (black cherry). Please bear in mind that this is a semi permanent dye and I don't use it regularly, when freshly applied it is BLACK!! If my hair is lighter it is extremely faded and i'm probably due a colour so what you're then seeing is mainly my natural hair colour which is a reddish medium brown.
    SKIN TYPE/COLOUR
I'm 36 and my skin is normal with a slightly oily t zone and early signs of aging like fine lines as well as some sun damage and REDNESS!
I DO NOT use fake tan, I get very tan naturally in the summer as I have olive skin. My face is often a LOT lighter than my body because I keep my face very well protected to keep my melasma under control and signs of aging at bay!
    My Necklace:
I get sooooo many questions about it, I'm so sorry it's not a happy answer! Its actually 2 necklaces together, and both were gifts so I don't have much detail, here is everything my hubby can remember! The larger disc and the chain were from Azendi, it has a picture of the moon and reads "The same moon around the world" (which is something that meant a lot to us when we first met and he was travelling with work A LOT). The smaller discs were from www.notonthehighstreet.com and they have my daughter's fingerprints and name and date of birth and they were a present when she was born. They don't seem to be available anymore I'm sorry!!

A mimillion years ago when MAC first launched I bought a ton of brushes . 30 years later( I took excellent care of them) they are still the best♥️. Friends thought I was out of my poor mind paying so much for brushes. Now you can hardly find natural hair brushes and they are highly sought after. Yeah, who's laughing now baby♥️. I have some Bobbi Brown brushes from years ago that are listed as synthetic on the website now but I swear they were natural hair when I bought them. Not cheap - why would I pay $60+ for a synthetic powder brush? I’m wondering if they changed but didn’t announce it?

I know this is older but I wasn't subscribed to you then -- brilliant and very informative review and I totally agree with everything you said. The more affordable brushes are harder to work with and definitely more scratchy which is especially unpleasant around the delicate eye area. I'm slowly building my natural hair brushes collection. I think they're totally worth it. It's like a treat to use them.

Great video! I prefer natural hair bristles over synthetic for several reasons, like te quality of application, the experience and, since I have kind of a "heavy hand" the application is more sheer and perfected. I absolutely adore my Rephr, Sonia G and Wayne´s, they´re harder to get, I wish they had a retailer here in Europe.
Everybody should watch this video to have a more affordable option for higher end brushes.
    Hugs my dear Charlotte!!

Wow, that was very interesting. This is the beauty youtube that I signed up for 👍
I always thought that natural hair brushes are better for powders and blend them better. And synthetic for creams.
But I am very intrigued in that rephr 17 foundation brush.
As a fan of natural hair brushes, I feel like almost every brush-company only makes synthetic ones. Even Mac these day’s. I get that cruelty free thing but sometimes is just a marketing thing, I think.
I always prefer natural brushes because they feel more “quality”. But for some brushes I am not bothered and use some synthetic ones. But for foundation, blush, eye blending, I certainly prefer natural brushes.
    Great video again 😉

Great idea for a video!! Both sides looked similar enough to support the use of affordable brushes - except for the foundation brush. I am going to order that Rephr brush. Would you be willing to do a similar test for PML eyeshadows? I have yet to determine which type of brush is most efficient for PML shadows, and I would love to be able to streamline my application instead of looking at my multiple brushes and trying to guess which one to use.

I loved this video, so informative. I have looked at natural hair brushes for ages, but never bitten the bullet and ordered any. I think it's because I put my budget into new and exciting makeup. Mind you, with the current situation there isn't much new, so maybe this is the perfect time to invest! I have so many synthetic brushes and I have favourites and my makeup looks fine, but seeing a direct comparison here has made me want some natural hair brushes. Especially the Sonia G powder brush, it made your skin look airbrushed!

Nailed it! I correctly guessed which side was the natural brush side. I invested in my first Sonia G brushes (worker 1,2,3) in early March. Since then, I have ordered the Sky Eye set plus 10 others. I also bought one eye brush from Wayne Goss and just snagged his Artist Collection. I've also snagged 8 Rephr brushes as part of their Concept store including the coveted #22 which was 50% off today (Yay!).
The difference and ease with natural hair brushes is astounding. I'm clearly all in LOL.

Morning Charlotte. I do love💜a good brush video. Apart from a couple of new ones, all my MAC brushes are the original natural hair which I've had forever. I do also have lots of Sigma and Zoeva too, and a few Morphe, Bobbi Brown and RT as well. I think as long as you don't batter the life out of them when you wash them, and unless you're incredibly unlucky, most will last quite a long time. I'd love some Rephr and Sonia G brushes, but I can't be arsed with the faff of getting them from the US. One day perhaps 😊.

  • @wendyraye
    @wendyraye 4 года назад

This was the most helpful video I’ve seen to help me decide if I should invest money on brushes - it’s more than just “treating” myself to certain brushes, it’s about comfort level, skill, and desired effect. I’ve seen dupe videos and figured shape was more important, but I’m like you, more heavy handed and would prefer (need) more fool proof brushes that make it harder to put too much on right out of the gate. Blush and eyeshadow are where I really tend to go overboard (I’ve wiped product off before).
MAC announced going totally synthetic, but I’m wondering if other brands went synthetic without saying anything? I’m finding some brushes I know are natural aren’t called out either way on certain websites (Bareminerals dual ended eyeshadow brush), which makes me think they’re afraid of backlash for using natural hair (maybe). Other brushes I swore were natural when I bought them years ago say synthetic now, like my Bobbi Brown powder and blush brushes - they were not cheap and I would never pay so much for synthetic brushes when I could get Sonia G or Wayne Goss - they’re not the softest brushes, but many synthetic brushes are soft (Sephora’s discontinued featherweight brushes), so I’m not sure if they are synthetic - sounds crazy that I don’t know, but it’s not obvious like some that I have. They have black bristles so it doesn’t look like squirrel hair or anything. How can I tell?

  • @pamelahewlett1750

I have to say I think the two sides came out nearly the same except the blush and crazy as it sounds I love them both (blush) the way each brush laid down the blush gives you two very different finished looks (kind of like the highlighter) and they're both beautiful!! 😍🤩😍 btw, it was just the right amount of blush and the color is gorgeous! ❤❤❤ also, I love my Bdellium golden triangle brushes and my Linda Hallberg brushes!🤗🤩🤗

It’s interesting as I would have thought there was more of a difference between true drugstore synthetic brushes like elf and so on compared to natural brushes. Rather than between higher end synthetic brushes like Sigma. I think Sigma brushes are still considered good quality and used by a lot of make up artists although they are not natural. Interesting that I could see that the eye look was much softer and blended in the crease with the natural brushes but that was about the only difference,

I have some bdellium but I never use them because they are so scratchy. My eyes aren’t sensitive but I can’t use any of their blender brushes. If you want some that are between Morphe and high end, Royal & Langnickel has gorgeous synthetic and natural brushes. Their Omnia gold line are very soft natural hair. I have two Wayne Goss blending brushes, and they are absolutely the softest, but I don’t think they work any better than the Rephr ones. The amount of money I've spent on brushes collectively I often wonder if I'd just invested in the more high end brushes to begin with if I'd have spent much less in the end yet I still look at them and fight with myself about if I can justify it. Maybe I should just do an overtime shift and then I could tell myself they really cost me nothing 🤔😂 When you poked yourself in the eye I thought I do that all the time when I do my lower lashline and there's no camera involved camera.. mascara wands regularly try to poke my eyes out too actually so perhaps I'm just blind 😬

I’m late to the game just recently finding your channel. Brushes and makeup have been my COVID hobby. Would love your thoughts on Wayne Goss brushes (natural) vs BK Beauty (synthetic). Is BK available in the UK? It is an amazing USA based brand. Keep the great content coming! Thank you from Dallas, Texas USA.

I have an undertone question for you. I’ve been struggling for years to find the right undertone. Most say I’m neutral, but neutral foundation always looks too pink next to my neck, which is very golden. I am having really good luck with a lot of the shades you wear (your winter shades are my summer shades). Does this mean I have an olive undertone to my skin?

It sounds as thought you may be an olive twin! Hard to say without seeing you in person but a lot of brands don't do olive tones well and when we choose neutral shades they do read pink on us most of the time X

I couldn’t care less about the luxury, I am not using animal hair products and that is that for me. A brush is bad quality if it sheds and if it isn’t properly attatched to its handle and wobbles or falls off. I have standard low-price brushes from the drug store that do just fine. They survive regular cleaning as well, another must. But lots of inexpensive drugstore brushes do all that just fine.

Very helpful and informative! Can you tell me if you've had any trouble with your Rephr brushes? I ordered mine during the Kickstarter campaign and they shed constantly on me, much more than I would expect after 6 months of use and for all the high reviews.

@@adelavalladares Yes! One of the owners contacted me via email and I was able to get my Kickstarter set replaced, but not to the exact same design I had originally ordered (longer matte black handles). The newer set still sheds, albeit not as bad, so maybe I just got duds both times? Which is a shame, since they are affordable and very decent quality (minus the shedding 😆). I just keep a lint roller nearby for when I'm done using the face brushes; the eye brushes shed considerably less.

The Bdellium brushes are also natural hair (mixed), same with Morphe. Would have liked to see something like ELF or BH cosmetics for the affordable side, since Sigma & Bdellium are kinda mid-range.

Charlotte, several years back I lost 3/4 of my hair. I truly believed I might looose it ALL.
My Dr recommended adding biotin, vitamin D, vitamin A.
It took about 3 months to notice the difference. My hair is so thick, so long and healthy now. I had not had a baby. I was just loosing hair.

Gillian Wills agree, I have a couple of Wayne goss brushes and I love them but in the UK we have to pay so much more to get them - really sad given Wayne is British I hope he gets a UK distributor - beautylish is fab at overseas shipping but we have to pay a price 😬

I’m a brush snob I fully admit. I prefer to use synthetic for foundation and cream blush and bronzer but that’s it. I haven’t picked up my inexpensive eye brushes years since I love my Sonia, Wayne, Rae, chikuhodo etc ones.

I am not sure if it was the camera or the lighting but the texture on your forehead and cheeks kept appearing and disappearing. At 19:56 when you were doing under your eyes and the texture was swirling around the brush it was a bit distracting.

Sigma, Zoeva and Bdellium do also have real hair brushes (and combination ones alongside synthetic). Eg: If you get the Zoeva eye brush set, there are more real hair brushes than there are synthetic... (Zoeva 230 is 100% pony hair and Zoeva 238 is pony hair and synthetic) 😎🖤🖤🖤 xXx
