All you have to do is make a slated platform just like for a regular bed. You can look up pictures online of foam mattresses molding because people didn’t have slats, they had their bed on a piece of plywood. Your body sweats a lot at night and it gets trapped in your mattress. It’s also smart to leave your blankets off the bed to air out the mattress for a few hours until you make your bed.
Many people that use a sheet material, like plywood, to support their bed, just use a 2" hole saw to cut a hole every square foot or so thus allowing moisture to escape and not build up. I personally cannot fathom why everyone with static beds doesn't use the Ikea SKORVA beams and LURÖY bed slats to build their bed support, totally removing the possibility of mold issues... Thanks for sharing and getting the word out...
The holes don't work. I have many 2" holes, code to another but it doesn't always work. I have storage under the bed, so the parts that are open, it works okay. But still can't get wet under. Three parts blocked, obviously is an issue. The slats would work, but with such little headroom, it wouldn't work for me. Have you resort to getting this mesh like material for airflow
THANK YOU SO MUCH for covering this. I just moved out of a home in the redwood forest which was 100% humidity (at times) . The mold was causing me numerous neurological and physical health complications. Sleeping/ living in my van helped me recover my health. But I also have to keep my van dry! Thanks again 🙏
As a Japanese person, I’d say there’s a reason we fold and put away our futons every day. Because they will mold if you leave them on the floor. How to avoid it is either you move the mattress by folding it or moving it (basically expose the floor everyday for hours to let it dry). Or you elevate it on a frame. The reason yours hasn’t molded is probably its on frame and the humidity from the mattress can escape.
You Missed Your own recommendation from one of your videos that is been reported as highly effective - it was red and grey and has a bit of spring and massive air flow.
its up to you to determine the level of risk youre willing to take. ie. is their visible mold still? how easy/cheap is it to replace? all good things to ask and assess from there :D
its definitely not the ONLY answer, it protects your mattress from damage but doesnt prevent condensation between the mattress and the cover itself if that makes sense

Yes we mentioned the hole cutting details briefly…it works well and costs next to nothing :) you’re right on the IKEA idea. Thanks for the comment

Im so sorry to hear about your mold journey - its a big issue that many downplay - we hear you. Glad you found comfort in your van!
Thank you for sharing this. Can you tell me what your symptoms were?

Hello..this is one of the most informative videos I've watched about mold..very helpful..ty
So so glad to hear that - thank you!
Perforations, multi holes, slats, good air flow & elevated aeration makes 4A Fun guy being notta fungi!! Bonsoir:)
Couldn't agree more!
Thanks for exposing this problem. x
Thanks Terry 😊
Great video! Thank you. Looking for insulation for my rooftop tent mattress. Don’t want to ruin my brand new Mattress and tent. 🙌🏼
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the comment buddy
Thank you, great stuff. Especially, the under mattress material.
Glad you liked it, thanks 🙏
Awesome video! Thank you so very much!!💐
Thank YOU
I am curious what brand waterproof mattress cover do you use? Thanks
I got one from wayfair on sale for like $60 bucks, works great! Not sure the brand but I just read reviews to know for sure

what do you mean by this Moncia? :D
good info
What dry sources of heat do you recommend?
diesel heaters have pretty good dry heat - but wood fires always win, but a little difficult in a van if you're not 150% committed!
Thanks
Thank you!
Thank u because no one talks about i feel like im the only one dealing with it lolol
Very helpful, thank you!
Glad it was, thanks Elizabeth
What if you had a mattress wit mold and got rid of it but still using the same wooden varnished bed base?
its up to you to determine the level of risk youre willing to take. ie. is their visible mold still? how easy/cheap is it to replace? all good things to ask and assess from there :D
@@VanClan I used Vinegar to spray down the wooden base and didn't see any more after. Placed my mattress on top thanks for the tips.
Great information thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it thanks :)
You forgot to put the links to the mold prevention products
Thanks Shelly will add later on today :)
@@VanClan still waiting?
Look for nontoxic options.
So is just cutting holes throughout the wood that the mattress lays on good enough ventilation?
its not the perfect solution however its much better than having no holes. the ideal fix is purchasing that underlayment for marine use
@@VanClan What brand you thinking?
I wonder placing UV lights under the mattress would help.
Very clever, I do wonder. Maybe?
Isn't the waterproof mattress cover the answer ? Thank u for this tho ..it's so important to avoid mold
its definitely not the ONLY answer, it protects your mattress from damage but doesnt prevent condensation between the mattress and the cover itself if that makes sense
@VanClan yes that makes sense so how do prevent it between the mattress and what it's laying on like how you have it .. laying on plywood
Use drizair beads. Effective and inexpensive 🖖
Never heard of that, will check it out 👏
Are you guys Portuguese?
I’ve heard that some van lifers get this
yes...rumours are true!
Thanks
