A change of heart for Rolling Stone? They've talked shit on Rush for years, now they're on their knees. There was a quote in the liner notes of one of their albums that said something like, "We never changed, everyone else did." So true.
RUSH rocked every concert venue that they ever played in. I've been a fan since 1975. Saw every tour up until they retired. Met Alex and Geddy after a Roll the Bones concert here in Pittsburgh, PA...two of the nicest guys you would want to meet. RUSH RULES!
How many times have RS brought forth celebration of Rush been done over 40 yrs - humble and passionate devoted musicians that never sell their soul - the best and always will be - pure and authentic
once i walked up to news stand and picked up a copy of rolling stone to read the review of 2112 that had just come out i read the review, closed the mag, replaced it on the news stand and vowed to never so much as touch another copy of that magazine i never have
I don't get it...do they diss Rush..and you love them? Or did they love Rush, and you hate them? All I took from your comment was, you can't afford a magazine! Lol
I suppose .... but I'd expect them to have at least an occasional unbiased review of the band ... they certainly said sweet things about some true trash music over the years. But then again ..... their mag, their choice. Of course, I enjoy most 'classic' rock .... What music style do you prefer?@@briankoops5171
The essential point about Rolling Stone is this: they have about a 40 year history of totally irrelevant, wildly ignorant reviews, totally ignoring and failing to comprehend great music and great lyrics, while at the same time praising and attempting to promote bands which are the essential equal of tens of thousands godawful garage bands around the country. You simply could not find more musically illiterate people anywhere than Rolling Stone music critics over recent decades.
I'm from Toronto, so I'm a bit biased....but I've never seen a bad Rush concert....these guys put %110 into it , every show! Love the laundry in the background, bringing the audience into Rush's secret basement jam! So Canadian...eh?
In seeing this, and reflecting on the "Beyond the Lighted Stage" DVD where Alex says, he isn't interested in being famous and people saying "there goes Alex, and he's loaded" comment. Well, lol, Alex, I believe, you just might have made it to that point that you had no desire of reaching, because, you guys, are world reknown, and your music is absolutely timeless. I saw you in Greensboro on this tour, and was blown away....not to mention how influential you all are with my own musical endeavors.
I'm a big Rush fan and have played the Geddy part in a Cover Band, but part of Tom Sawyer comes straight from "In the Cage" by Genesis, just after the keyboard solo
@snapascrew Alex hasn't had his onstage amps mic'd in years. The "doghouses" were 2x12 cabs and a mike enclosed in a box hidden backstage and that would go to the house sound. His onstage amps were basically monitors for himself. The sound on that vid did sound a little direct, definitely.
@davegto67 idk what the doghouses are sorry. he used to use like 4 full stacks. the bottom cab of each full stack was micd. now he's got three 212's on stage for stage sound, and he essentially goes direct to the board with his palmer speaker emulator...
its kinda funny that the guys who wrote 2112 call that rolling stones tune two one two oh michigan ave thats the address of chess records in chicago btw
Yeah I'm sorry but RS needs to publicly apologize and make a big production of it. I've been a fan of Rush since 1975. You guys black balled them. You're lucky they had enough class to even sit with RS.
I just always get bothered by RS posting things with Rush. Back in the day, they were always one of the biggest critics, hammering them every time an album came out
I think that you misidentify just criticism as "cynicism." Rolling Stone has been a 40 years-long farce as far as identifying great music and great lyrics with anything more than a random chance level of success. They promote worthless music that is often forgotten within a few years to a few months in many cases, while their self-conditioned cognitive amusia probably prevents them from even hearing something great like Rush as music at all. Tens of millions of Rush fans think RS is a joke.
why the hell has NO interviewer asked about the Exit... live video footage with the drum solo!!! it has to be out there somewhere. love these interviews, but despise the semi Rush fans asking the usual typical questions. frustrating.
Are you fucking kidding me??? Dude writes for Rolling Stone, and he insults the band by asking them questions that demonstrate he HAS NOT DONE HIS HOMEWORK...... Geddy and Alex were VERY kind..... Others in the business probably would have ended the interview and given this hack the treatment he deserved. God how I hate The Rolling Stone mag, which shit all over RUSH for years. Geddy and Alex are class acts, and they carried themselves well.
Rolling Stone Magazine relentlessly tried to sink and demoralize the best band ever, over and over again back when Rush proved to be a unique force by itself. These guys are so different, but I mean, so efing different compared to any other band that has existed up to now, that they slapped humbleness all over RSM by letting it interview them after all the shit they dumped on this unequal band.......same thing with Aerosmith which never let them make a sound check prior to the shows when Rush used to open for them.....what a shitty thing to do.......I guess Tyler and his band were scared shitless of this power trio that sounded better than the 5 or 6 dudes who play in Aerosmith....these are facts, no BS
I think if you were TRULY Geddy's biggest fan (and he is your "hero") Ya wouldnt jump ship & say that about him, as his aging voice changes. And "can't listen to him anymore?" To me, that is NOT the words of a true fan by any means (sorry dude, sayin' it like it like it is!) Ya know, its kinda like saying that you're dumping your wife, cuz she got fat and is dieing soon..... it aint right! Now go stand in the corner until you edit your original post :)
D. Kip Trumpulis nah, one thing has nothing to do with the other. I love this guy's way of understanding and making music. I just said his voice aged in a way that it´s playing against his songs and his music... at least on a live concert
@@alanboro After so many years on the road, Geddy is straining to hit the high notes. Completely understandable. The toll it takes. Ian Gillan can't do it anymore, and neither can Robert Plant... Our rock gods best years are gone unfortunately.
That magazine's music critics are some of the worst and most ignorant losers who have ever gotten anything in print. The endless garbage they promote is totally forgotten, often within a few months.
Agreed, but Rush has no reason to prove just how amazing they really are.Do you think they care if they are in the R.R.H.O.F.? Or do you think they should accept after all these years? I dont,Rush is too good for the hall.
Here's a interview with Aimee about that... Q: Speaking of popping up in weird places, what are you doing on that Rush album? AM: They called me up and asked me if I would sing. And I thought, Rush? That's not my kind of thing. So I listened to the song, and the part was this little falsetto thing. It was cute. Q: It's a fine enough song. AM: Yeah. I don't mind the song. Q: Do you still get royalty checks from that? AM: Oh, I don't think so. I doubt it. They gave me $2,000. That's a lot of dough. Q: Canadian or American? AM: [Laughs.] That's the question! I think American. They flew me up to Toronto, and they were really funny. Well, except for Neil [Peart]. He wasn't very funny!
Well, you know, the parents always want the kids to grow up and get a real job and not be stupid and try to earn a living as an artist - God forbid, but if they do it anyways and make good money then the parents will "take that back" and "be so proud" you know because now its OK. Rolling Stone is just being like that to them.
Absolutely 2112 and I say this ->🌠Cygus X mfn 1.and me, on my ship, the Roasenanti, wheeling through the galaxy plus more stuff w Every Nerve is Torn Apart so farewell to Kings
Boy there's a lot of cynicism here lol....Rush have gotten some good reviews over the years in this magazine just do some research.....I still enjoy reading it.
Rush is Canadian, and we say 'Zee'....the way Rush intended....have someone take that rod outta your butt...it's just a preference...not a law. If your music choice is influenced by diction over substance....your a dic! There you go...correct my grammar so you can feel better about yourself! I'm Canadian...we help lost souls.... you're welcome.
Geddy and Alex seem to have a complete disconnect from their best LP, Hold Your Fire. The live snippet of Time Stand Still is completely lame and uninspired from the original. And, both Geddy and Alex have said that Tai Shan from Hold Your Fire is a regrettable effort. I find Tai Shan to be one of their best-ever recordings; better than 90% of their work.
A change of heart for Rolling Stone? They've talked shit on Rush for years, now they're on their knees. There was a quote in the liner notes of one of their albums that said something like, "We never changed, everyone else did." So true.
Rush is undeniably one of the great rock bands of all time, and RS mag still has no idea who they are.
Looks like he’d glanced quickly at their wiki page and built his “interview” on that.😂
Oh, NOW Rolling Stone thinks Rush is okay.
Missed the boat by about, oh, 38 years, didn't you?
Another of a myriad of reasons I hate them.
RUSH rocked every concert venue that they ever played in. I've been a fan since 1975. Saw every tour up until they retired. Met Alex and Geddy after a Roll the Bones concert here in Pittsburgh, PA...two of the nicest guys you would want to meet. RUSH RULES!

So proud of our 🇨🇦 band🥁🥁👏👏
Im actually suprised that Rush fans dont go blind from overexposure to PURE AWESOMENESS!!

They really are the best …
"I've never heard the full story of how Tom Sawyer came together" Then you have not watched or read very many Rush interviews...
Right
I think they added a few things for him but they are nice enough to answer it again.
In seeing this, and reflecting on the "Beyond the Lighted Stage" DVD where Alex says, he isn't interested in being famous and people saying "there goes Alex, and he's loaded" comment. Such genuinely nice guys.
Surprisingly good interview! Great questions; props to the interviewer!
No man. That dude was clueless, asking typical probie questions and trying to act cool in front of musical legends. A 13 yr old could've done better
Rush retired and left a lot in the tank unlike what Kiss are currently doing.
Geddy has such a nice smile :)
This interview was actually good. Great questions. Not talking about the tragedies of the band...as so many interviewers do.
Nice job Brian! I had never heard they recorded Alex’s solo and got natural echo off a MOUNTAIN! -Steve #RushFamily
They put on a hell of a show that day
"Mournful elasticity."
Bless 'em.
Brian Hiatt is the same guy who interviewed RUSH for their July 2, 2015 cover story.
Well said...
Rush were a Great live act.
Alex sniffs his armpit at 3:18!! Ahahaha
2120. I could play that in my sleep. Geddy would just smirk at it.
R.I.P "The New Guy" 2020.

This interviewer is like Chris Farley on SNL interviewing Paul McCartney. "Remember, uh...remember when you were in the Beatles...?"
Who cares about critics while there shows are sold out.Next year in Amsterdam, i can't wait.

hey at 3:18 into the video did Alex smell his arm pit

@evhwolfgangguitar . You are correct. Alex is not drunk , abusive or missing a large proportion of his tongue or his hip.
Geddy: Wow, that's really cool. I've never heard you say that before.
Alex: I just made it up right there.
Gold! It's gold I tell ya.
This guy reminds me of the Chris Farley show... Like a 5 year old.
+Scott Ineman "Um, re..remember when you guys recorded Tom Sawyer? That's was awesome!"
+Center Cut Studio Dude yes!!
Get a “real” Rush fan to interview Ged & Al. There are so many things I would ask them if I had the honor of their presence.
Thought the same thing!
I just always get bothered by RS posting things with Rush. Back in the day, they were always one of the biggest critics, hammering them every time an album came out
Why didn't the music critics of the time do the interview? ITS BECAUSE THEY ARE STILL ANSWERING QUESTIONS FOR ALL THE BAD REVIEWS THEY GAVE RUSH
@davegto67 It's miked, NOT mic'd!
@snapascrew They're not using the "doghouses" any more for Al's rig?
Rolling Stones panned: Rush, Yes, Genesis in the Gabriel era, Led Zepp, Queen, some Zappa material, etc etc etc
cuerpoeperra just a bunch of pretentious idots at RS. for me Rush, Zappa and Zep are all time greats!
Calling Rolling Stone birdcage liner is an insult to the birds! RS sucks!!!!!!!
Nope
@davegto67 during the 2007 and 2008 snakes and arrows they miced the 412s on stage.
