This helps a lot seeing I’m still fairly new to the legends game. Thanks Bobby, and as always, the work you put in for the community is greatly appreciated!
I'm interested in the legends class figures. The reason for it is that I'm not happy with the direction hastak is going with MP now. I loved what they were with the real world alt modes. It gave them the more "maturer" look. They are also pricing me out. Not paying over $250 for a normal size, single MP scale figure. I also feel that we may never get all the characters in the older MP style to complete my collection. They also keep re-releasing the characters they have already done. I've moved to XTB, FT, and others to get my MP fix. If I can get a good looking collection for the $20-$50 price of all the first season characters, I'll go legends for sure. As for scale, I perfer that the alt modes are to scale to give me the realistic scale of the bots. I know that, that doesn't always work for things like the combaticons, but for the autobots season 1, it can work. Thank you for making this video. It will help make my purchase decisions if I choose to go legends.
Agreed, I've always believed that alt modes should be the priority to scale(when possible and within reason). With soundwave, megatron, Shockwave, insecticons, etc, as outliers as they aren't scalable vehicles.
Halfway through this video, while I’m simultaneously trying to remember every company you just mentioned, I realized I’m listening to a man argue colored lines and scales within scales of 3inch plastic robots all the while wearing a skull faced mask. And goddam if it’s not some great fucking content. I love the internet and I love our strange awesome hobbies. Thank you Robert Skullface for doing this dirty work for the rest of us.
Thanks for all the effort that obviously went into this video, ESPECIALLY since it's a pure service to your viewers and nothing you personally care for. I don't care either since I'm not into the Legends game, but I surely do appreciate the work you put into this.
Wow! I myself am a masterpeice and masterpeice size tf collecter. Shot out to you Mr. Face. So much hard work not to have a dog in this fight. Thanks for making this........ FOR THE PEOPLE!
Thank-you for the look at the Legends scale. I don't collect Legends, but it did answer a lot of questions I had about their scale. Also, by seeing how much crazy time and effort you put into this presentation it make me a a bit more glad I don't have to deal with these scale issues, and that if I was collecting them this would be an invaluable tool in figuring out what to purchase. Thanks for the vid. It was very informative and made pretty interesting.
This was quite helpful, I decided to start collecting some legends a couple of reviews back (yes you and your reviews were the ones that got me into it) and I was having a hard time figuring out the scales but this "Sit Down Saturday" really came in handy. I respect your opinion because you're a serious collector/reviewer and we share the same exact tastes when it comes to collecting TF (besides this new collecting Legends scale I got myself into), your tips were Prime and you made my life a lot easier. This was a very good TF collecting community service you provided, thank you very much Mr. Sckullface.
Thank you for this video, I started by picking up a few figures from different manufacturers and then was wondering how to move forward. This video helps me build a roadmap for my collecting. Thank you for the hard work you put into it!
Thanks for putting this together. Scale issues are the main reason I gave up collecting legends scale. Sold them all off except for the Dinos and a KO upscaled Devastator.
Not to sound like a noob but to make sure legend is smaller then deluxe right ..when I was collecting TFs (around the time of TF Universe run and ROTF ) it seems these where the “kiddie” TF ..and would you suggest these or Deluxe for a stop motion series and what are some deluxe size brands and figures if anyone could help sorry for being late asl
Kinda a weird question here: if you prefer to keep ur bots only in bot mode, wouldn't you also prefer just to have amazingly sculpted figures that didn't transform and therefore wouldn't have any kibble?
@@MythsAndHeroes I honestly couldn't have guessed how you would answer. Thx for replying. And dude, thx for the ridiculous knowledge & honesty you always drop!
The scale discrepancy bothered me quite a bit, then I realized that I dump all of my legends figures into a plastic tub for storage and they are taken out by my daughter and me to play with. So, my solution is if I like the figure, I buy it. I have both New Age and MS Cosmos. I have DX9 and MS Prime. I have both IF and NA Megatron. The duplicate figures sure make for some great “mirror universe” storylines during our playtime, and I get the added benefit of seeing how each company tackle the engineering.
Thank you for this video. I'm at the early stages of possibly collecting these and I have been very confused by the scale differences. I will say, that Kup is awesome looking.
Very cool video. Scale has been one hinderance from me getting further into legends. I’m also interested in alt mode scaling with the vehicles. Jets might be a bit hard but I’d like the cars to at least scale with each other in vehicle mode.👍
I'm pretty happy with my legends scale which is a mixture of different 3rd party company's and Hasbro but then I am only building original first few years of g1 deceptions. The only let downs were the coneheads which were meant to be a little bigger than they are but I can deal with that as in all they don't look outrageous all together with the rest. I literally need the stunticons and triple changers now to finish when someone makes them.
I stick with IF for Legends figures most of the time... MP scaled bots fill my G1 needs. That keeps things simple for me scale wise. Great topic & video.
Dude awesome detail and diligence in this. As a guy that buys a few legends 3rd party figs every once in a while, I can definitely say the scales are def all over the place. The only reason why I still buy them is bc, with respect to legends scale, I don’t necessarily care about scale.
I have found a very straightforward solution to displaying just about all of these figures in scale, I simply maintain three separate legends collections.
After New Age gives us sideswipe I'll swap mine out. It is too big for my scale set. Ultra Magnus is pretty good as is but if NA gives us one that's just as good I'll swap. I chose DX9/NA to be my shelf. Even if its trash. Lol
Legends are relatively cheap and swapping out is no problem. And they are easier to manage as well all around. At this rate, these legends will complete the line ahead of the MP scale line. If this had came out earlier, I would have gone all in and not with the MP scale line. Thanks, Bobby.
I mix Iron Factory carbots and Magic Square. IF Hound, Mirage, Jazz, and Wheeljack are all the same size as MS Sideswipe, so I went with them. The stylization IF is known for doesn't stick out on those guys as much as their Lambos. Definitely gotta mix and match if you're looking to build out a roster. I'm out on New Age, except for Bee and the bugs, but the bugs are really too small.
This is starting to happen in the Classic realm with the Siege line. Sideswipe is a perfect example of this. That Siege mold was dead on for the character, I wanted it to replaced my Classics one, but he is WAY to small to even consider it. That "Deluxe" bot is only slightly taller than iGears Hench, it doesn't work at all and it's sad because the mold is so great. However, the Voyager and larger scale Siege bots are working out very well. Springer was a perfect swap out for that good old Fansproject Defender.
Great video and thank you for the hard work. I collect legends and to be honest, Prime is my line of demarcation. If a bot is supposed to be bigger than him, then that is what I look for etc. I don't display my guys in a line like a sunbow chart, nor to they stand shoulder to shoulder like some lifeless rank of troops. I play with my toys and display them as such. To each their own but I figure the ones most upset have already spent money on figures that dont work, or really want a figure but it doesn't work in the fictitious scale chart that nothing, not even its creator has held to.
Since I’m not out to get a full cast, style is more important to me than scale. Largely, I have Iron Factory, but I did get DX9’s Soundwave since I really liked the cassette bots... and since IF’s (original) Soundwave was long sold out. And, I’m still holding out hope that DX9 does toy repaints of their dinobots, or that IF makes actual dinobots. Also, speaking of style, MasterMade and IF go really well together, though I’m also looking forward to my first New Age offering, their Insecticons, arriving to join MM’s Trypticon, since those Insecticons are so damn precious.
I don't collect any of this, however the video was still interesting and enjoyable. Even if my head hurts a little trying to keep all the information sorted. I imagine that's how collecting legends must be with all this variation.
Thanks for all the hard work. One of these days I'm going to join your patreon. I'd have the money for it if I weren't in the middle of 4 different legends figure collections.
Dope ass vid. Interesting to see the possibilities of it all and also where one is a bit flexible. I´m happy to stay in MP for G1, but IF for kinda IDW Cons. Truly a great time to be a fan. Scale possibility, style and for your own sake, you can do no wrong. Thx, Bobby. Great video and to me: not dry at all.
I'm not a fully fledged legends collector thankfully, dabbled with dx9 but now restrict myself to select IF. I wonder if the scale differences are intentiinal, trying to get total buy in from consumers to a line, IF are the only company that have ever done that successfully tho.
I went for Magic Square for my main autobot cars (Toyworld Wheeljack works, too). I use Newage and Magic Square interchangeably for minibots - although the scale is different, they are all smaller than my Autobot cars so it works. Although Magic Square's Cosmos is clearly bigger than Newage's, MS' Beachcomber is sized pretty sensibly compared to Newage 'Bee. I use Magic Square and Mech Planet interchangeably for larger 'bots - their primes are the same height in spite of Mech Planet's minibots and, seemingly, datsun bros being much too big compared to MS. Their Ironhide and Ratchet are a decent cheap stand-in, though. I also treat myself to Newage's weird repaints as a way to get in on their Autobot cars that otherwise don't fit my collection. Did I make the right choice? I'm not sure. I've had two QC issues with MS - one being deeply remiss of them. Newage have better alt. modes and are starting to get into translucent windows and better paint. MS started at a sprint releasing many great figures but since CNY we've only really seen their Hoist...
Toyworld Wheeljack works with NA too. Don't fully extend his legs, and you have NA sized Wheeljack which, at the same time, pays homage to the OG G1 Wheeljack toy
I'm glad I got out Legends. I remember not thinking about scale, but now that Legends is just tiny MP, this video would've had me questioning all of my purchases had I kept collecting. Lol
so if these mp style legends figs came out before or at the same time as mp figs originally do you think you would have been in on em? i think they are really fun to mess around with and i like that they are a simpler style but still look the part. i think one shelf of season 1-3 figs is what im going to do with em in the long run.
I had come to this conclusion before watching this video. I want them to be small, but I'm also interested in good interesting elegant, complex transformations so the Newage is really hitting runs for me. I am mixing in some magic square and will be selling some of it off as Newage makes the same characters no doubt. I've already moved on a lot of Hot Soldiers, and other figures similar. The Hot Soldiers Prime is brilliant, but a bit unstable for me. The original design MFT stuff is very good but too big for me. I'll be keeping all the DX9 Headmasters because they fit enough, as you said and they also have interesting transformations.
Yeah, youre absolutely wrong at 3:47, as G1 Prime's being slightly bigger than IDW's miner or any Megatron(except Stealth Bomber) is absolutely right. So yeah, you may have different preference, but you're wrong. Also Chromedome(a flippin flat sportscar or sorta thing) is being as big as Optimus(A goddamn semi truck!!!) is also BS, so UT Chromedome vs DX9 Optimus is just spot on scale! ;) What I'm actually saying here is you just follow Mike's chart that based on Sunbows as you said yourself. But what is incorrect here is Sunbows chart itself as it's dated and lazy. What I do with my MPs as I don't collect legends is I try to make the altmodes scale, not thecartoon botmodes. That works 75% in the cases and that's how I like my collection to be. That's why I think XTB Stunticon botmode scale is right and FansToys' with the exception of their Motormaster is wrong as a stunticon carbot shouldn't be as big as a seeker. As you said, scale is in the eye of the beholder, but the way I see it, makes more sense! Al least to me. XD Lol
It seems like the only ones interchangeable between the companies are the New Age mini bots and Insecticons. they will work with any of the 3 brands. The Magic Square mini bots are too big within it's own brand.
Just glad the MP offerings don't have that sort of scaling issue at least to that degree. I think the only one I have that really doesn't scale well is my cubex Huff
I care about how the vehicles scale together, in bot mode the G1 toys didn't scale together either. Which means that I can accept some inconsistencies in bot mode if they aren't too extreme. My current Prime is the Magic Square one, but I have to say that the Hot Soldiers version might be more fitting for my collection.
@BobbySkullface: I'd love to see a breakdown of the figures that you'd buy according to the Sunbow chart, if you were into the legends size figures. I'm already planning on picking up the DX9 dinobots to pose with my Haslab Unicron.
Dang, I cannot believe you came out with this 4 days after I made my big splurge on legends, Lol; just my luck. This is still very helpful and like you I did my own research through reviewers and using the same chart. One thing though Bobby, why does MS prime's head line up with the purple line at 7:41 and yet dip way below on 5:41? Is that resulting from a perspective shot? You're right though, in order to use the chart we have to go across the producers. I don't think Newage is at fault, I think Magic Square is messing up with the scale even in their own lineup. Look at their sideswipe almost standing as tall as their hoist or soundblaster; way too tall for a car-bot. This ended up as my own line-up, it's as close as I can make it up. MS Prime, NA Megatron, Dx9 seekers, MS hoist, Inferno and Ultramagnus, NA jazz, NA Bluestreak, NA Ironhide (might be smidge small) NA bumblebee, NA seaspray, NA insecticons. I would have preferred to do in one line, preferrably Magic Square since what they have made are freaking masterpieces at such a scale and I feel like they are the Fanstoys of this scale; but the scaling mistake of their carbots' sideswipe is too jarring. I think NewAge seems to be the best at scaling within their own line but the aesthetic of their designs, at least the older ones, are below Magic Square's. I hope you get to review NewAge's Megatron and put him against that chart.
Do you think that if Takara started making Legends scale figures for whatever reason, would the other 3P companies fall into line for their scale or keep going their own direction?
The reason why I quit collecting legends scale and went back to regular deluxes. And not to forget you have Hot Soldiers & Mech Fans Toys. Plus way too many repaints of other figures, not to mention waiting a month for it to come in. Good review though. 👍
Great video. I collect IF MS Newage and the Unique Toys Headmasters. I’ve been sorta doing what you are saying. I use MS Prime And Inferno along with Newage cars and mini bots. I use UT Headmasters because that’s the only choice I had I keep IF separate but only get the characters I enjoy. Really really good video Bobby.
The reason I enjoy this scale (legends/Battle/legion scale figs is all about that space. Now, I had no real interest in this topic because it did not cover official Hasbro/Takara releases which is my preferred product, they created the scales after all and I think (my opinion only) should have been included in this topic and strangely was not. I know you are not interested in this scale so that may have been the reason why, but it should have gotten a mention or comparison. Moving on. As I said this scale is a fun scale to play and display, I also understand that (I do not do this) that it is either much harder/easier to create displays for this scale ..again, i don't know as I do not make those despite making custom figures. Good vid.
Bobby, I noticed the instructions of a VF-1J on your table, it would be amazing to see you doing a review on macross stuff, .... I’m just saying....🙈🙈🙈
I used to think about this, but now I just look at this diagram before buying a figure, and if it roughly fits, I buy. By the way, MFT has slightly less problems with the scale.
Finally. We got people out here making it known that CHROMEDOME AIN'T A SMALL PLAYER. I understand why he gets shafted in the deluxe category but he's a tall knee-bro.
I'm simply collecting only DX9 War in pocket figures (ok, I also get Unique Toys Headmasters to go with them because I think the scale is good enough). I chose DX9 because they invented that "legends MP" idea, then few other companies stole the idea and started the same thing. So, I really hope DX9 will release all G1 characters in War in pocket line. Although, it seems like they're slowing down (releasing less and less figures in DX9 line), and I don't like it....
Great vid and good timing as I’m gunna start collecting legends I think. Pretty certain I’m gunna stick to magic square, they all clean up pretty damn nice and are solid builds
I don’t really agree with the whole animation scale because of the inconsistency in the animation, I believe in size that makes sense, chrome dome shouldn’t be the same size as Optimus prime when one is a car and the other is a truck but that’s just my opinion I believe cars should be in between the red and green while trucks should be in between the green and violet
Wish I found this sooner.... Amazon got the hook in my mouth with a $25 Optimus studio series KO a month back. Then I wanted seekers.... And Megs. Decided on Deformation jinbao. They were cheap and seemed close to prime. But prime was too big for Megatron. Then I got the MP bumblebee and streak to check out. Bee was ok with prime. Streak was as big as prime. So I decided MP wasn't for me. I don't have the room to continue that collection. Then I decided toon was the way to go. So I ordered Newage Prime bee cliffjumper outback mirage a KO Jetfire Brawn soundwave.... Turns out jinbao is too big now lol... It's a good waste of money! I'm going to stick with Newage though for now. I have a hulkie KO on the way that I plan on modding and the DX9 Dino's......nice to see they should scale well with newage. But I think I need a intervention..... Until then I at least I have seemed to figure out my scale issue.. Thanks.
I don’t really care that much. I keep my magic square sideswipe and newage jazz away from each other. Meanwhile, minibots like huffer and cosmos, I don’t think they necessarily need to be mini bots these days. I think they can be carbot size. I think they could even be bigger. Same with warpath and power glide. Maybe they should be bigger even.
It’s Classics/Henkei/Universe/Generations, or something like that. Forgot the lines off of the top of my head. It’s like the Generations, Combiner Wars, Titans Return, etc... most somewhat are scaled. They are smaller than masterpieces and bigger than legends class figures. Someone else can describe it in more detail.
“I haven’t cared about scale since 1984, just like Hasbro.”
-best quote I’ve seen on this matter. :)

Now do scale comparisons in vehicle mode without referencing character-model scale! ;)
Aren't the Siege WFC figures in scales for the most part?
I think that magic square look the most cohesive together
Yeah, youre absolutely wrong at 3:47, as G1 Prime's being slightly bigger than IDW's miner or any Megatron(except Stealth Bomber) is absolutely right. So yeah, you may have different preference, but you're wrong.
Also Chromedome(a flippin flat sportscar or sorta thing) is being as big as Optimus(A goddamn semi truck!!!) is also BS, so UT Chromedome vs DX9 Optimus is just spot on scale! ;)
What I'm actually saying here is you just follow Mike's chart that based on Sunbows as you said yourself. But what is incorrect here is Sunbows chart
itself as it's dated and lazy.
I'm kinda new in collecting 3rd party TF and I'm wondering: which legend sized line scale better with Maketoys CD Thundermanus? Any opinion?
Takara does make Legends scale. They started it.
The reason why I quit collecting legends scale and went back to regular deluxes. And not to forget you have Hot Soldiers & Mech Fans Toys. Plus way too many repaints of other figures, not to mention waiting a month for it to come in. Good review though. 👍
I'm really only starting out my legends collection with the IF DJD right now, but I've been looking at Dutch really closely....IF and DX9 it is!
Really really good video Bobby.
def Dx9 for biger bots and Unique for car bots and minis
Refreshing to hear: 8:38 and 10:10 . Full disclosure...I bought a YOUR SHELF IS TRASH shirt.
I was curious if the Decepticons would play in the conversation to a larger degree.
Finally. We got people out here making it known that CHROMEDOME AIN'T A SMALL PLAYER. I understand why he gets shafted in the deluxe category but he's a tall knee-bro.
You getting into Macross?
I agree NewAge figures are phenomenal but unfortunately on a smaller scale of their own
no housekeeping?
Sounds like me min/maxing character builds😊
I'm simply collecting only DX9 War in pocket figures (ok, I also get Unique Toys Headmasters to go with them because I think the scale is good enough). I chose DX9 because they invented that "legends MP" idea, then few other companies stole the idea and started the same thing. So, I really hope DX9 will release all G1 characters in War in pocket line. Although, it seems like they're slowing down (releasing less and less figures in DX9 line), and I don't like it....
I feel like Newage stuff is bulkier does anyone else see that?
Great vid and good timing as I’m gunna start collecting legends I think. Pretty certain I’m gunna stick to magic square, they all clean up pretty damn nice and are solid builds
I use seekers as the basis for scaling but that’s just me
I don’t really agree with the whole animation scale because of the inconsistency in the animation, I believe in size that makes sense, chrome dome shouldn’t be the same size as Optimus prime when one is a car and the other is a truck but that’s just my opinion
I believe cars should be in between the red and green while trucks should be in between the green and violet
I’m curious what Deluxe Baldwin has to to say on this topic. He’s my go-to Legends reviewer.
I like legends scale figures, but they do not tickle my toes to purchase them
Size does matter. -Ratchet And Clank
I don’t care about scale, lol. They fit when compared with Titan class CHUGs. I win!
Somewhat still new to collecting transformers and learning the lingo, what does (chug) mean if you don't mind me asking?
It’s Classics/Henkei/Universe/Generations, or something like that. Forgot the lines off of the top of my head. It’s like the Generations, Combiner Wars, Titans Return, etc... most somewhat are scaled. They are smaller than masterpieces and bigger than legends class figures. Someone else can describe it in more detail.
@@jasonreyes1342 well I appreciate the time and explanation! Thank you!
I only care about how they'll look if I make a battlefield table and throw Hasbro's Metroplex and Trypticon in the table with them.
Hey buddy why do u wear a skull face during your videos?
ghostofsparta291 because if I didn’t I’d have to be Bobby normalface and of have to change all my social media and everything. :)
The simplest solution
DONT MIX LINES
Bobby did you really just say "the tip is fatter in some places, little bit of human error" etc minus a "so to speak"?? Shocking.
Scrimble Citybots I have failed you all :( lol
