Thank you SOOOOO much for sharing this video! I just replaced the pull cable linking my interior handle to the latch mechanism. Without your video, I wouldn't have been able to do it.
Thank you so much for this video. I could no longer open the door of my 2004 Passat from the inside. I ordered a new cable, and your instructions enabled me to get the whole job done well. It is all in working order and I saved a few hundred bucks. Thanks especially for the closeups of attaching things to the new locking mechanism. I did not replace mine, but I had to attach the new wire and the lock indicator came loose and had to reattach it.
7:48 Be really careful with T-25 and T-27 torx. The bit should fit really tight in the fastener. It's very easy to use a T-25 bit in a T-27 fastener and round it out as you apply torque. I always keep the T-27 nearby when I'm dealing with T-25 fasteners, and see if it wants to fit, because it's easy to get fooled.
Wish I had found your video first before I busted the plastic piece connecting the door latch assembly to the regulator :-( Great video! On the torx you back out to remove the lock cylinder, 12 turns exactly!!! my passenger side without lock cylinder took a few extra turns.
Thank you for the video. Your instructions were spot on. I had a more difficult time removing the lock cylinder than you for some reason. I think I was afraid to loosen the screw too much. I had to back it off quite a few turns before the cylinder pulled out. I watch from the inside to make the the screw wasn't about to pull out of the hole. I also had a little trouble with the electrical connector. Other than those two items it was pretty easy.
i did exactly the same thing for the same reasons. I looked on the inside with a flash light to make sure I was not going to loose the screw. You actually have to loosen it quite a bit before the cylinder will move.
Great Video! Your video is the very best I've found. I could not have disassembled and reassembled the door panel to gain access to the lock actuator without this video; Thanks! I have an issue with my 2005 Jetta TDI MK4; my two front doors are not electrically locking and unlocking; inside buttons on either door do not work nor does the keyfob (only front door locks are affected - the rear door locks function OK with keyfob and drivers door unlock button). I have to use the actual key to unlock and lock the drivers door - which will turn on and off the alarm system OK. And the pqssenger door, I have to use the inside ‘handle’ to unlock and open the door and then to lock it have to push the small knob near the window down. I haven't had any of the 'random' symptoms that some talk about. When I open each door, the bottom light comes on, as it should. Again, the only way to unlock the front doors is to use the key inserted into the lock in the driver's door and rotate it so the door will unlock (also only way to lock the driver's door is using the mechanical key and rotating it). Once the driver's door is unlocked, to unlock the passenger door one has to reach across the seats and pull on the inside handle. I did rip apart the passenger door and was able to get across contacts #1 & 2 (of the door lock assembly) with 12vdc and verified the lock motor did work, and in both directions. I was going to replace the door lock assemblies, but not sure that’s the problem. Another piece of info. is that both front door lock issues did not happen at the same time. One door lock stopped working a few months before the other then stopped. It may even be an issue with the central control module, as it appears the voltage comes from that to the motor.?.? I’m just not sure what is in that module in terms of ‘logic’ for the front door locks. I would greatly appreciate any advice or additional troubleshooting tips to isolate this issue. Thanks.
thanks for posting this. made it an easy job knowing ahead of time what I will need. Tip - buy the 3 square bits, don't try to make a torx or allen work.
Hi Thank you for posting this video. After watching this video and one other I was able to replace the door lock on 2003 GTI without any problems by following exactly what you recommended. Thank you Ali
Hey Humble, my 03 24v jetta wont fully unlock either of the front doors to let me open from outside.have to open reaching from rear to inside front handle. You have helped so much,..let me know what you 💡.Thanks and appreciate your help.
Wondering if i have the same issue. my key (not key fob) locks my doors immediately but will not unlock my door on the first try. I have to turn the key multiple times and eventually it opens. The actual door lock feels loose when turning and I'm trying to figure out which component i need to replace
Great Video Paul!! Looks like I might be replacing this, my MKIV R32 drivers side door will not lock if I use my Key fob! If I use the key fob the alarm will set, However the drivers side door will not lock. If I physically put the key in and lock it that way the alarm will set and the door is locked! So I am assuming that this door lock module is bad.
I have a similar issue. The only difference is that my passenger door lock is also affected. I can only unlock the passenger side by pulling on the inside lever. The key fob AND door switches will not actuate either driver or passenger door locks.
Is it correct that you need to make sure the replacement latch has the same casing colours? i.e. all black or black and white to make sure it’s fully compatible?
I have a problem with Mk4 golf 2 door I have problems with the lock but when I'm going to lock with the key and then if I try to many times the window go down
@@rayfinnerty Unbolt the door latch, pop the lock cylinder and disconnect the plastic cable to the outside door handle. It comes out in one piece. Window regulator and door latch.
Exactly correct. The door lock module and window bracket can be removed all at once once you unbolt the door lock module from the door. And the trick to removing the lock cylinder is to turn the side screw 12 turns left exactly and it will free up the lock cylinder without losing the screw.
I guess I have to read EVERY COMMENT any time I"m going to follow some instructions. I broke the bracket taking the regulator out watching a different video. I ordered a new one, took awhile removing the rivet, waiting on rivet's that fit, and finally putting the new bracket on the latch. Was about to install the regulator again, and realized he didn't have the bracket in there. So been reading comments for the last 20 minutes and finally found yours! (THANKS!) Looks like I'm taking the latch back out and connecting it to the regulator before reinstalling.... In hindsight, I might have just not put the plastic bracket back in, but at this point a new ones already on there....
hello DAP. quick question, i know you sell the lock module but would you happen to sell the door lock cylinder? I've confirmed that mine is broken. however I'm concerned that replacing it would mean i need two keys from now on? cant i buy a replacement with my key custom on it already?..thanks.
If I replace the door latch, does the new latch come with new micro switches? I've read that the micro switches can go bad causing this same issue. Or if my latch is good can I just replace the micro switches? Thanks
you seem to know a lot about these cars. is it possible to replace just the outside door handle cable? or do i have to buy the whole thing like you did?
ok instruction but does not show how to undo all retaining clips. This door must have been done multiple times because it took a lot more force to take everything out of my door. Used a few videos but this one did help.
have an issue and maybe you know how to solve it, it is a 2001 mk4 TDI driver side door that would unlock using a fob but won't lock using a fob. it would lock using a fob, only if I unlock it and lock it within a second, same situation happens inside the car, with 2 buttons near the inside door handle. any ideas, or suggestions?
I recently bought a 1999 Jetta and the previous owner installed keyless entry and removed the lock on the driver side door so you have no way of opening the car if the battery goes flat as you have no lock to insert your key into. Can I get a lock like in this video , install it and not have to carry around a spare set of keys? Can I continue to use my original Jetta key that I use for the trunk and ignition?
My inside door handle keeps slipping (looses tension) when I try to open from inside (outside works fine). Works for few times then looses all tension again. This happened after I replaced window regulator. Is there way to anchor the inner door cable so it won't loose/stretch from opening door from inside? I was thinking of advancing inner door cable further behind regulator panel then taping it down?
My door lock will not always turn on the alarm or turn it off either. What's annoying is when it does not turn off the alarm before I try to get in. If I can't get it to disarm, it sets off the alarm. Since mine is an old MK4, and I don't want to spend the money or time on it, is there a simple way to just disconnect the alarm?
Here’s a question for you all, how do you open the passenger door without damaging the door or taking the door panel off when the door latch is broken in the locked position, meaning the door cannot be opened from either the inside or outside, it can be done as the garage where my mate took his 2011 Jetta they have done it
Hey I have a 2000 mk4 golf and for some reason the factory alarm goes off whenever I turn on the car, open the hood or open the passenger door from inside. Could the door latch be the problem?
Hi there I was wondering if you can help me I have a Jetta4 1.6 2002 model the problem I have is the interior motion sensor works one day and the next it does not work I have replaced the switch on the driver side, inside post that turns the sensor on or off and I have replaced the interior light switch that holds the circuit board for the interior sensor , is there anything else it could be, thanks Juan

Hello, great video! Question: my 2003 jetta has the opposite problem where if I open and close a door, the internal light will not turn off. I assume this again is an issue with the door latch assembly and the internal microswitches, or am I off base on this? Also, any reliable way to diagnose which door latch is causing this?
Hi DAP problem I have is the puddle light stays permanently on even after I close the door/start and drive away, so car always thinks "passenger door open" and beeps every time you move away from still. This also stops interior lights working when removing key after journey. Will it still be the switch in the module being jammed or something . Will a new module fix this issue or shall I clean the switch in the existing module? Regards.

Hi DAP. I cant find any videos related to my problem with my Jetta, can you help? i have a 97, and the dome lights, sunroof do not work, but buttons for windows are fine. i am really having the problem with the driver side door not setting alarm on when locked manually (no key fob) it can lock, but when door opens, the alarm goes off, leaving me to turn it off by the opening the trunk. in other words, when locking doors manually, all open doors wont lock, and windows (if opened) wont shut at once. only driver door locks but alarm will sound. other doors have to be opened manually from the inside. i did undo the battery terminal to see if that would do, it only resets my clock each time i start the car.
sahbian Sounds like you have issues with door latches or other alarm related components. You should consider bringing this to a VW specialist as it will require further diagnosis.
hello DAP, I just bought a 99 jetta gls. ive got the car to start but i have to unhook the battery before i turn it on or else the alarm will go off and wont start. I just got the car on the first of January. the guy i bought the car from replace the driver door lock but it uses a different key then the ignition key. I cant look my driver door at all from the outside of my car.
My door lock module is attached to the window regulator metal panel - confused why yours is not... Can't remove the regulator panel because there are two plastic fasteners that are connected to lock module behind...
Tried that it's virtually impossible. Had the door skin off twice. Can't see anything that would cause a rattle... Not that it matters as in true, typical mk4 fashion it stopped yesterday! Great vid btw! Cheers
I've just replaced my door lock module and now I can't lock the door at all, not with key or fob. What have I done wrong? I've already taken everything apart 4 times and all seems good. Any ideas?
So my wife broke the assembly and the key was stuck in the forward position the car honked three times ever since i was able to remove the Assembly from inside the door and use a screw driver to lock and unlock the door but only cause the cylinder slid out with my key still attached Hahaha but now my car seems to lock but the anti theft light isn't blinking anymore>??
My 2000 Jetta will immediately auto lock all the doors and arm the alarm whenever the driver's side door is closed. Also the driver side door no longer unlocks with the key cylinder or click button and makes a buzzing noise when I click the button to unlock. The key gets stuck in the lock cylinder so I no longer can use the key. Would replacing the lock actuator fix the click button issue? Once replaced should this still work with the click button on my original key? Please advise.
Replacing the lock module won't affect your key, or the remote buttons -- you won't have to reprogram it for a lock module swap. The weird auto-locking behaviour IS likely caused by your driver's side lock module -- swapping for a good module should solve most issues* . * Unless one of the other lock modules is also faulty, that will often show up as your lock plunger staying down/staying up when you use your power locks to do the opposite.
I cannot get this fucking clip out, the last one that lets you pull the harness the window regulator assembly. Any tips or tricks? Sitting out here like an asshole.

+Little Homie yes that is correct the microswitch is included. We are not aware of the microswitch being available shopdap.com/store/vw-door-lock-module-3b1837015as.html
Most issue revolve around the car not knowing that the door is open or closed. So for example: If you want the car to lock but the car thinks that one of the doors are open due to a faulty actuator, it will not lock...

+newRisks We are sorry we are not sure what your question is. Can you be more specific?
the driver door will not lock and the alarm goes off everytime i open the driver door
newRisks Tough to say what they replaced. since this does not require you to replace the key lock cylinder they might have replaced the wrong part.
the guy said it was replaced cause i have 2 different keys for the car
any difference for RHD and LHD?
My door lock module is attached to the window regulator metal panel - confused why yours is not... Can't remove the regulator panel because there are two plastic fasteners that are connected to lock module behind...
I see no one mentions or seems to refit the plastic retaining bracket that that you punched out of the door skin... Mine rattles now
This isnt required. It can be removed and thrown away.
Thanks, that's one thing off the list! Any ideas what my rattle could be? Driving me nuts
Tough to say. You will have to physically track down the rattle
Tried that it's virtually impossible. Had the door skin off twice. Can't see anything that would cause a rattle... Not that it matters as in true, typical mk4 fashion it stopped yesterday! Great vid btw! Cheers

There's no way to remold that discardable plastic. Try checking the grommets for the door lock and cable release.
I want to know please how to fix window problem I got my car the window can't go up and down
A couple of things. The switch panel might be burnt out, or the motor for that window is shot.
I've just replaced my door lock module and now I can't lock the door at all, not with key or fob. What have I done wrong? I've already taken everything apart 4 times and all seems good. Any ideas?
99 jetta
could this be the reason why my alarm goes off every time I turn the ignition?
u have 15 seconds from when u unlock the car to start it, otherwise it will go off
So my wife broke the assembly and the key was stuck in the forward position the car honked three times ever since i was able to remove the Assembly from inside the door and use a screw driver to lock and unlock the door but only cause the cylinder slid out with my key still attached Hahaha but now my car seems to lock but the anti theft light isn't blinking anymore>??
I cant turn the key on my drivers door. I sprayed it with WD-40 and penetrating oil and still wont turn. I'm guessing its not just sticking lock?
Golden Retriever use graphite
Why not just remove the glass from the door once separated from the regulator?
3B1-837-015-AS is this the correct part number?
Se tomaron el trabajo de que sea lo mas dificil posible. Y si tenes que hacerlo en la puerta trasera..ufff peor
Have you ever seen a door built better than this, like a tank!
all youtuber the same ,remove the anti thief cover 15:27, because they don't know how to put it back. nobody know nobody care.
I cannot get this fucking clip out, the last one that lets you pull the harness the window regulator assembly. Any tips or tricks? Sitting out here like an asshole.
The grace and peace be with you from the lord your God our father and his son Jesus, thank you, but how many of you know about the good news repent and believe in the gospel because the kingdom of heaven is at hand and crack your word the Bible, and continue blessing you! Luke 4:43 6:20-28-36-37-38-39-40-42-43-45-46-47-48 10:5-16-19-21-23-24-25-26-27-29-33-37-42
So you replaced the crappy door lock module with another crappy vw door lock module.
HA HA , and people wonder why Euro's have such a bad rap for repairs. What a joke.
what do you mean?
B P in a typical car , this would be a easy 15min job.
Would this cause battery drain?
have an issue and maybe you know how to solve it, it is a 2001 mk4 TDI driver side door that would unlock using a fob but won't lock using a fob. it would lock using a fob, only if I unlock it and lock it within a second, same situation happens inside the car, with 2 buttons near the inside door handle. any ideas, or suggestions?
If I replace the door latch, does the new latch come with new micro switches? I've read that the micro switches can go bad causing this same issue. Or if my latch is good can I just replace the micro switches? Thanks
+Little Homie yes that is correct the microswitch is included. We are not aware of the microswitch being available shopdap.com/store/vw-door-lock-module-3b1837015as.html
will this fix central locking issues to?
Most issue revolve around the car not knowing that the door is open or closed. So for example: If you want the car to lock but the car thinks that one of the doors are open due to a faulty actuator, it will not lock...
