My '97 e39 doesn't do that. When I turn off the motor with the lights still on, it turns off the headlights, leaving the parking lights on. Then, when I open the door it makes that buzzing sound to remind you that you left the lights on.
On a side note, while delayed headlights is a feature on some cars, it's a BAD idea. It's hard on lead acid batteries, leaving them somewhat discharged until you start the car up the next day. And you can bet the Dealer will be more than happen to charge you to replace your battery after it's shortened life.

Maybe it only works on cars with LCM III, then. But I doubt 40 seconds of headlights at the end of a drive makes much of a difference on battery life.

Different batteries are designed for different purposes. Car batteries are designed for a short duration, high amp output for starting. A Deep-Cycle battery (for say, off-grid solar) is just the opposite as it's designed for a long duration of continuous lower amp output. If you swapped these batteries (car battery for off-grid solar, solar battery for starting your car) you would kill both of them in a short time. Marine batteries are a compromise, trying to do both functions, but they don't last as long as either a storage or starting battery. It all has to do with the size of the plates inside the different batteries. Starter batteries have thin plates, Deep Cycle has thick plates.
I assure you, those who use the 'follow me home' feature will need a replacement battery before those who don't use it. It WILL shorten the life of the battery, and the Dealer will be happy to sell you a new one.

@@st8kout961 Don't mean to revive this but incase anyone else reads it all.. If you were using cheap batteries I'd agree that its going to shorten the life on a more noticeable note. Use a decent battery and its not going to bother you. Plus most Euro cars run a decent battery. - I know my e39 (01) has a decent and also rather big battery in it. You also forget power is still used when the battery is off anyways. Again, use a decent battery and its going to last. Just shop around and DONT go with a dealer for replacement.

@@kingbraydow Well, there are car batteries, and there are storage batteries. Two different animals. Car batteries have thin lead plates designed to provide massive amperage for a short time, measured in seconds. Storage batteries have THICK heavy plates, designed for long steady power output but at a much lower amperage. Solar panel experimenters quickly found out that car batteries are utterly useless for off-grid solar. They fast became boat anchors when people tried to use them to drive DC to AC inverters when the sun went down. They are not designed for long power outputs, such as headlights that stay on after turning off the engine. Sure, they work for awhile, but their lifespan will grow shorter and shorter with each use.
