We get ponk in Vadodara also. Price 600-1000 per kg. Ponk soup and pulav are also very nice. Ghari is specially healthy because of ghee which gives heat in winter, same for adadiya pak and other sweets. ps: In gujarati, if we want to say 'maar khayega kya?', we often say 'methipak khavo che tare?'. Because it is bitter as hell. But again, very healthy. Our maids eat 1-2 methipak in morning in winters as it is a huge energy boost

Hi Tanmay You should have tried ponk with different flavours of sev like spicy sev, lemon and pepper sev, palak sev and yellow sev. That is the traditional and authentic way to eat ponk, Which tastes much much better than ponk vada and all. You missed that.

Tanmay Ponk, you have to eat without any additive. You can feel the sweetness of nature. Then you can add different varieties of Sev (lime pepper, palak etc) and chutney. Ponk Vada, samosa, is the fusion dish made from ponk. Also ghari is not mava barfi. If you have seen the process of making, you should have felt the difference.
Ghari is specially made up of Mawa with sugar and lots of dryfruit.. than that mixture will be filled in thin maida atta roti. That dumplings are fried lightly in desi ghee.. after that you heat the ghee and put ice in one big vessel and put a bowl of ghee in that vessel.. and you have to stir ghee almost 50 times to make it thick and dip ghari in this ghee.. keep it overnight and have it next day.. it tastes yum...
Ponk is found in marathwada also which is basically a region in Maharashtra. In Maharashtra it is known as HURDA we also do the same process & afterwards it is baked in bhatti aur on stove and we eat it with peanut chitni aur different chitnis and with curd. Incidentally, the sweetmeat resembles the full moon. Surat-based historian Sanjay Choksi says, when the Marathas fought with the British in the 18th century, Tatya Tope came to Surat with his army and were tired from the long journey. “To give energy booster to the army, Tatya Tope had shared the recipe of Ghari, a mixture of sugar, ghee, dry fruits, and milk mava, stuffed in dough, and fried topped with a coat of ghee, with the halwai, who made it for his army,” he explains, about how this port city fell in love with the snack.
