A proper Honda CT125 review!

  • It's no secret we've been excited about Honda's launch of the CT125.
    Previous editions of the bike are a staple in the New Zealand Small Bike scene and having owned a Honda with the same power plant, I know just how much potential this model has.
    But does it live up to the hype? Does it need a low range gear box? Does it actually handle off road? Can it maintain highway speeds?
    All these questions and more, answered in our latest video.
    Thanks to Motomart for inviting us to check out the Honda CT125! Check them out here:

      Agreed - I belong to a motorcycle club of 43 members, who all have "baggers", mostly Harleys. I am the only one with a very aggressive looking "sport bike" (Kawasaki Ninja 400 KRT ABS), which is much lighter and nimbler than theirs, and I get to play with ALL the gears during a trip.
      I guarantee you that I have more smiles/mile than they do, and I do it at the age of 76.5 years (Imperial, not metric). ; )

      Nah bro your opinion is wrong. If you’re not riding at least a 1400cc Indian sport bobber or a 500cc 2 stroke when you go trail cruising then you just shouldn’t even go. It straight up won’t be fun without any less power 🙁

      Well except for the Earls link front suspension, a horrible leftover from the pressed steel Honda Dreams that should have been retired in the early 1960's. I had a 1970's K1 trail 90 with a PowRoll 125 stroker kit, it hardly needed the 4X4 transmission and it had telescopic forks.

    My buddies and I all rode 80cc and 100cc Yamaha street bikes in the mid-1960's, except for one of us who rode a 'Honda Trail 80'. We laughed at it and called it 'the tractor'. It couldn't keep up with us on the highway, but could go anywhere on the off-road far better than we could. And it NEVER failed to start after the first kick. Great bike. Tough, reliable, economical. Wish I had one now.

  • @456eec
    @456eec 3 года назад +18

    As the owner of a CT110 with dual range they do go anywhere but you have to have grip. On a steep slope on grippy rock you have to lean right forward to stop the torque lifting the front wheel. When I come to grief on long steep climbs it is always loss of grip due to the dual sport tyres. I am looking at getting at getting another rear wheel to set up with a knobbly for off road use only. I think the 125 would have made it up that slope without a run up if it had a knobbly.

    I found this one a day or two before whim purchasing my Trail 125 a couple years ago.
    I was on the fence about even trying it due to lack of the dual range gearbox and figured it'd be completely lame. This video gave good reason to believe it was at least a bit of fun offroad 😂
    I got it at a price I couldn't lose at, but didn't want to buy it with the intent to resell. I make fun of it alot, but still have it in the garage 👍

      Thanks so much for the comment. What an awesome connection. It's truly impressive how much the fuel injection and more power can make up for the lack of low range. Of course it would be nicer with it, but it's still a premium bike without.
      These days I own whats called a Honda Wave, the model that the CT got it's engine from. It's a Thai made family commuter with enough underseat storage for a full face helmet - it's even got a higher air intake than a CT125.

    Thanks for this video - I picked up my JA-65 Hunter Cub here in Japan a couple of weeks ago, and I'm loving it (a nice counterpoint to my Yamaha Tracer).
    I got the Turmeric Yellow; yes, I know the red is the iconic colour but I saw the yellow in the shop and kind of fell in love with it.
    This video gave me some better idea of speeds and handling with someone nearer my weight on it!

    Great bike review! The CT125 would be so much better if they increased the size of the fuel tank by one and a half to two gallons AND made the luggage rack chrome (the painted version is going to be a mess of scratches in no time). Additionally, maybe better tires. Great bike though, love it!

      There's decent enough alternatives. The GY230 Hawk retails for about 1/4 the price and has five gears twice the HP, a time proven pushrod 230cc engine cloned from the CG125 pizza bike engine that was originally designed in Honda of Brazil. It's Chinese but these bikes run for ages in most of the undeveloped world's countries, parts are cheap and they're easy to repair and upgrade.

    Excellent footage and review! Looked super fun. If u have a minute, I'm looking at this or the Suzuki VanVan 200 for a first bike. Do u think the VanVan could do the stuff you did in this video & have similar amount of fun? VanVan looks cool, has plush seat, and 200cc but this Honda looks dead easy to maintain & has stuff like ABS & disc brakes on both wheels.

    • @SmallBikeStuff
      @SmallBikeStuff  3 года назад +2

      I've ridden a Van Van 125 - but not the 200. It's a good bike to ride, no doubt. It will hold open road speed better. But it would be a bit more cumbersome to operate off road - though it could definitely handle it. The big thing with the Van Van for me is the huge rear tyre is difficult to source in New Zealand - not impossible, but options are very limited. Arguably the Honda has more options available off the shelf. I would probably choose the CT125, but it's no secret I'm a Honda fan. If someone offered me a Van Van 200 I would definitely take it for a ride and have a tonne of fun, I just prefer the Honda. I think with this choice it comes down to personal preference.

      Yeah Honda really kind of dropped the ball there. On the upside the engine is an undersquare stroker and this bike does have large jumps between the gears, so first gear is nearly as adequate as having the 4X4 transmission on the 89cc bike.
