  • The more you dig into this bike, the cooler it gets! I won't spoil any of these features here, so you'll have to watch!
    The new Honda Trail 125, or CT-125 Hunter Cub is the latest throwback or reissue bike from Honda. The Trail 125 (as it's known in North America) is a modern tribute to the CT-110, a bike that was produced through 1980 and for which the Trail 125 is most closely reminiscent of. Along with the clever design of the Trail 125 comes clever engineering from Honda. There are a few hidden items and features on this bike that will make you smile, and one's I've found particularly useful!
    I have many, MANY more videos to be produced for the Trail 125, so please hit that subscribe button and ring the notifications bell icon so you're alerted to any new videos that I produce. If you'd like to join our Honda Trail 125 Enthusiasts Group Community on Discord, a place to discuss and share information about the Trail 125: / discord

    Holy shit, the boomer comments down here are beyond toxic.
    Thanks for the little overview. I know you're just some dude with a camera and not something high production like RevZilla with spread sheets and a week to write a script, so it's nice just getting "some dudes" impressions.

      Ya know, I’ve been waiting for a comment like this! I couldn’t agree more, I’m really just a guy with a bike sharing my thoughts on stuff after having just gotten the bike. No insight from anyone, just me going over the bike and my excitement. The boomers jump all over me on some videos about the Trail, it’s a nostalgic bike that some old timers don’t like seeing “youngsters” (I’m 40, by no means young) mess with, especially when they think Honda has engineered it “perfectly”…I’m gonna pin this comment, I love it! Thanks for taking the time to comment 🙏

      I apologize for those folks in my age bracket who haven't represented us well! Age and wisdom have only a slightly positive correlation, unfortunately. One of my favorite movies of all time is "Harvey", with Jimmy Stewart. His character is a super-friendly guy named Elwood P. Dowd, whose drinking buddy is an invisible 6-ft tall rabbit. The way he treats people is exemplary....you can't watch the movie and not want to be more like Elwood.....the world would be a better place!! One of Elwood's soliloquies, available on YT: "Years ago, my mother used to say to me, 'Elwood, in this world you need to be oh so smart, or oh so pleasant.' Well, for years, I was smart. I recommend pleasant." (great OLD movie!)

    I live in the Pacific NW and owned a 1970 CT90 up until a few years ago. I actually big game hunted with it and took it in crazy terrain (river/creek bottoms, mountain Jeep trails etc.) IMO the best utility bike Honda ever made. Mine hade a Hi/Low transmission and would do 60mph on the highway and in low it would cart me and my 200+ buddy up a dirt hill with him riding on the rack- lol (I actually bungee corded a boat cushion over the rear rack as a seat) also- the rack holds an old plastic milk crate perfectly for hauling gear etc!

    I just ordered mine up here in Québec. Our farmer father had bougt a CT90 back in 1970 for one of my brothers. It looked almost identical to this 125 model. One feature the CT90 had that this one does'nt have is a 2 range gearbox...the low/high lever gave us access to 8 speeds. We would often be 3 on the bike (it also had rear footpegs) and no hill was too steep for it in low 1st. We used to call it our little tractor.

    My first bike was a CT 90 with the old two speed gear box. I beat the snot out of that bike for many years and just could not break it. After a while it develop an oil leak, and as a dumb a** kid I forgot to put oil in it one day. It locked up, I just added a Qt. of oil and it started right back up. When I went to a bigger bike I sold it to a guy that fixed the oil leak and drove it everyday to go to work for over 5 years and only changed the tires, oil, air filter. I had no money for gas so I would go around to the gas stations after they closed and drain the gas out of the hoses and I'd be good for another week. :)

    If your battery is dead, or even completely missing, this bike will start and run without a battery (completely removed). It's been proven online (Ride With Warro). And that's what the kickstarter is for.

    • @John5XR

    Kick starts and heel shifter's are great in the main countries in Asia where the Trail 125 will be sold, where you need a robust bike that can handle poor/no maintenance, lack of spares; and you'll be riding in bare feet, flip flops or light shoes. The heel shifter doesn't damage your footwear (or feet) :-).

  • @fredhogg4361
    @fredhogg4361 Год назад +4

    These bikes are huge in the Asian market and in Asia it's very common to ride wearing flip flops and soft shoes ..... so automatic bikes or heel shifters are big business. There's a good economic reason for this not just off-road utility. Not everyone wears boots to ride.

    I was told that the many business men/women who ride these bikes back and forth to work in Japan and Asia had requested this ‘heel/toe shift’ feature, and the heel shifter is preferred so they don’t scuff up the toes of their dress shoes while up shifting. This feature was integrated for this very reason on the early “ Super Cub “ models and carried over throughout the years and is still a very functional standard feature as seen here . This was long before there were the modern day scooters that have automatic / clutch less transmission and a deck board / plate in lieu of foot pegs for resting your feet . I love these bikes ! Trying to justify the need for one in my own mind , and wanting the new CRF300L too !

    • @seankearney6915
      @seankearney6915 3 года назад +2

      I believe that to me the case. The originals had the toe end the same as the heel end too. Not sure about scuffing shoes lol! Have you seen how many of these are ridden in flip flops. A few of us weren't allowed motorbikes as teenagers and got the original C50/70/90s as hand me downs and just swapped out the gearlever for a motorbike one. We found if you ride them in boots you wanted to rotate the gear lever clockwise a spline or two then it was impossible to press down with your heel anyway. My dad used to use his toe on the back half for upshifts anyway and was miffed when I swapped the lever out.

I’d mention the grab bar is handy when putting the bike on the center stand. As well as moving it around getting it unstuck or a temporary passenger for off road short distances since no buddy pegs.

    I really love this new Honda Trail 125. However, for over a year, I can not find one for sale anywhere. I will buy one as soon as I can find one! Currently, I own a 1972 Honda Trail-90. My Trail 90 is in mint condition and has won me a couple of cool trophies! This new 125 Edition seems to have all the upgrades like Turn Signals, Elec Starter, Disk Brakes, Etc...... I would sure would love to own one, but they are more scarce than chicken teeth at this point!

    in thailand that bike isn't that cheap
    but it is capable
    that heel shifter is design for "flip-flop"
    and while the whole world using (down 1)-N-(2-3-4 up)
    in asia it is N-(1-2-3-4 down)->N we use heel to downshift and the transmission does cycle around (at least in thailand)
    it is much more convenient but now our motorcycle trend is going automatic (CVT) but CVT isn't that good for off-road and hills
    anyway have a good day.

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  3 года назад

      Thanks! I wouldn’t say it’s something the bike needs in stock form, especially if you’re staying on pavement. If adding power, climbing steep hills at slower speeds, or practicing wheelies, stiffer clutch springs will help make the bike “pop” a little better. The stock clutch will feel soft when trying to do these things.

    • @seankearney6915
      @seankearney6915 3 года назад

      Depends on where your pavement riding is and how long the journeys are. My first bike was an early C90 46 years ago. To me the gears are better than having a twist and go. In the UK they were classed as a full motorbike in those days and I did my test on one. I don't like running things flat out so if you only need 45mph I would say they are a great introduction. I dare say given their popularity they make financial sense too as I bet they are easy to resell. Though I am sure you would be tempted to keep a first bike and just get a bigger one later if you wanted to do serious highway mileage. I wrote to Honda to see if they would come to the UK but just got a bland reply from their customer services.
      "We are pleased to learn of you interest in our products.
      Currently, there is no official information stating whether the Honda CT125 will become part of the UK range. As soon as we have any details about upcoming models, we publish them on the "Coming Soon" section of our website."
      Shame and I cant see why as we get the other 3, Super Cub, Monkey and Grom and I think the CT125 is cooler and more useable. Grom and Monkey too small, bigger wheels more comfortable on bumps, Cub only a drum rear brake. CT125 is a no brainer and you can stick some stuff on the back easier than you can with a CB125. I even bet later on you could pop a Grom engine in and have the clutch.

      Honda's PGMFI for these small bikes was developed alongside with the entire electric system. Precisely because of situations like that. Notice that the same basic system is also used on the tiny 50cc's with FI and many times CVT transmissions. Where they can perform in the same condition. ;-)
      I recall Honda engineers pointing precisely that fact and how challenging it was. To develop a low consumption system that could work from a couple of kicks! ;-)

      I've installed YSS fork kit. Using recommended oil 15wt 185mm oil level. About 120cc. Very stiff. Went 10wt better but wasn't progressive enough. went to 7wt better but still didn't feel progressive. Ordered some new fork piston rods ,seals and sealing washers. Drilled 13/64 holes 5mm above existing holes 90 deg from originals to allow more oil flow. Also made two 7mm spacers to add more preload below the yss adjusters set them all the way up so I would have more adjustment travel. Added 125cc maxima high performance 7wt . They are super smooth and the emulators can work now instead of factory drilled tubes. I went to 125cc oil to keep from bottoming out on hard bumps. I'm heavy 275lbs rider. And this combination works great. I think it would work well for lighter riders too. Smooth ride and takes rough terrain very well. Next, need to fix the rear !

      I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say Honda got the suspension right on the Trail. I've not had any issues with bottoming, and the on/off road performance feels great. I've also jumped it a few times and it doesn't kill the shocks like it does on the Grom/Monkey, so this is something I might just leave be!
