Cult icon, enigma, recluse… the life of Syd Barrett, founding member of Pink Floyd, is full of unanswered questions. Until now. Piecing together his comet-like rise to pop stardom, his creative and destructive impulses, breakdown, exit from the band and subsequent life alone, this feature length documentary is set against the social context of the explosive sixties. Directed by Storm Thorgerson (Hipgnosis) and award-winning director Roddy Bogawa, it features new interviews with Syd’s friends, lovers, family and band mates Roger Waters, David Gilmour, and Nick Mason.

His pair of solo albums are real gems. And his electric guitar work can be viewed as a bridge to the post-punk sound revolutionized by Joy Division and PiL.

Syd was originally and above all a painter🎨 Many people say "poor Syd" "poor soul" "he went mad and left" etc.. I personally don't agree with that, Syd's neither a lost nor a sad soul and he certainly wasn't neither mad nor mentally ill, on the contrary, he was a genius and a very special and very very very lucky soul🍀 The main problem was not his consumption of lsd. His excessive consumption of psychedelics, just like what many young people did at that time, did complicate things more, it's true, especially because when someone is extremely creative and sensitive and is passing through difficult times, psychedelics can be very dangerous, but this was not the main problem! Roger Barrett was originally and above all a painter who fought for the pure little child inside of him whose greatest love and vocation in life was PAINTING and whose happiness lied in colours, the sun, the trees, in the magic of Mother Nature and in the quiet simple and humble life. He was an artist who had got side tracked half way through his life into playing music (because his genius couldn't get unnoticed of course), which he'd always enjoyed as a hobby, and it was difficult for him because, on one hand, he didn't like fame and never wanted it, and on the other hand, he needed to express himself through drawing and colours. At some point he left (found his way out of the system) because his truth was not understood. All he wanted to do was paint, take care of his plants, spend time in Nature with the sun and the trees, play music with his friends, dream and jump around like a child. He saw the world differently, he experienced things differently from how most of people experience, he was seeing something beautiful that many people aren't seeing, never understood celebrity and didn't see anything special about him, he was just like a green plant🌱 He's a beautiful soul.. the most beautiful soul🌳☀ The world needs to know the truth🙏 Love you forever Syd💚

This needs to get released globally on Blu-ray as soon as possible! I can’t imagine a theatrical release for the US but maybe. A lot of people aren’t aware of Syd or his role in that band.

Was Syd ever diagnosed with Schizophrenia? Why is his illness frequently framed as some kind of mysterious / cosmic event that led to his self-imposed exile and isolation? It is not unusual for psychedelic drugs (or even cannabis) to trigger an underlying mental illness that perhaps would have manifested itself anyway over time. It is a tragedy that he became too ill to continue to make music, but why is this sometimes posed as a great mystery of WHY and WHAT HAPPENED to Syd? Mental illness destroys lives. Hopefully the film addresses this possibility in some way. He is one of my very favorite artists and it annoys me to hear his illness glamorized. Hopefully this film avoids that take

It definitely does. Towards the end you hear people say it's sad, a tragedy, and others say it wasn't. It's a very balanced and well-done film.

Excellent perspective. Back then they just blamed the drugs ("too much LSD") but you are right. Mental illness even today is not addressed by the medical community at what level it should be but now we are beginning to talk about it. Back in the 60s it must have been a mystery. In One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Nicholson's final treatment was a lobotomy after electric shock "treatment". It was like medieval times for mental health patients. Doctors and nurses had no idea what to do.

He seemed to be doing ok the last few years (maybe even decades) of his life. Living quietly and apparently doing alot of painting and riding his bike alot. According to a family member of his.

When his own family refused to accept he had a mental illness (a position they defended till the very end), they set the precedent for this "Syd myth" thing. Had they addressed his psychological condition early on, it'd have raised awareness for that kind of stuff.

This is a very interesting film. Amusing, entertaining, moving and sad at times. A lost soul, swimming in a fish bowl. If you get the chance, do go and see it.

Hopefully it tells the truth about how he was kicked from the band. Syd truly is one of the most creative people and it’s ridiculous how he gets labeled as crazy when his band mates kicked him out of his own band.

    • @YCampbell

I saw it last night and it definitely leans on that factor, as well as him being overworked whilst in a very fragile condition.

    • @ElMariachi555
      @ElMariachi555 Год назад +2

True they just stopped going to pick him up. From what I have read in the past on stage he became impossible to work with though. He would stop mid song or would not play his parts and instead move to the side of the stage. He needed medical help and psychiatric help but did not get it.

    • @scottmooneyham5521

Please. Enough of this. Regardless of the cause - and there is perhaps blame to go around - he became mentally ill. Accept it.

He really didn’t want to do it anymore. Couldn’t have been clearer. Being in a band at that level is a pretty artificial experience. A massive amount of work as well. I think the glow of the whole thing wore off quick for him.

Syd Crazy Diamond ♥️🙏💔 Those who have too much genius have a mind so open and free to wander over time that they often risk going crazy (with or without the use of drugs). I think it's a predisposition.

some people like to shine for a few years and then go back to living a normal life and do something else and Syd was trapped in a world where he couldn't switch off pressure the band created and drugs was the escapism to creativity.

Looking forward to seeing soon. I have lately gone down the rabbit hole of Syd’s solo work, after being a longtime Floyd fan (seeing them thrice and RW once doing the Wall). Even as his decline began, his wit is impressive. Writing a song with a big band melody about a girl complaining that she like big band songs better than his, and concluding it with a rock riff? Pretty special.
