  • In this video, Popsicle sticks are used to study various lateral force resisting systems in a building frame. First, we try a building with no lateral system. We will then try a moment frame and finally diagonal and cross-bracing systems will be tried.

    IT'S RIDICULOUS HOW SO SIMPLE AND STRAIGHTFORWARD YOU DELIVERED THIS EXPLANATION AND ALL OF IT I COULD DIGEST RIGHT AWAY. thank you man i really needed this. i have terrible attention span and this video helped me a lot in understanding these systems liked and subbed!! :)

    This video helped me design the fence for my yard. I did a horizontal shadow box fence with the structural X boxed inside the horizontal boards, screwed into the inside of the post, which were spaced 8' apart. Wish I could attach a picture. Never built a fence before, but the style of it is getting great feedback from the neighbors. Thank you! I love the look of it and I love that my fence is built to last, thanks to the X between the post. Great teaching video!

      Thank you for your comment. This is an interesting use of braces but as you know the concept is applicable to any structure that requires lateral stability.

    Is there much of a difference if the braces are connected: vertical to vertical member, or vertical/ horizontal to vertical/ horizontal, or horizontal to horizontal members? Did that convey my question well? I hope.

      It makes no difference whether the diagonals are connected. The frames only need to be triangulated. But the entire column of frames must be triangulated.

    Front and back frames stiff, anything in between - rigid. Connect via good roof system. The result is an optimal system with an ability to put windows.

    BUt could you not use single diagonal brace in each square?With braces facing away from each other in each square?Tops of the braces facing outside in each square.Which would save you the overlapping problem.
    Any forces acting on the structure will be coming from outside and with braces facing outside also then you would have just as sturdy a wall.
    Just top of my head wondering lol

    • @StructurePlanet
      @StructurePlanet  4 года назад +1

      Yes. A cross brace can be split into 2 braces each in a separate bay if this is what you meant :)

      @@StructurePlanet a single brace in each square positioned to take any outside force and direct it toward the center and base.force on the top square will be directed by single brace to both center boards and the bottom will be directed to the same spot on the bottom of structure.
