  • With the Government’s controversial Rwanda Bill currently stuck between the Commons and the Lords, this timely special episode focuses on the UK’s asylum policy. Nish takes up an invitation to speak about the issue at the House of Lords. The event has been organised by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Refugees, in conjunction with the makers of a new film called Io Capitano - which follows the perilous migration journey of two young boys travelling from Senegal to Europe in search of a better life.
    Nish joins Labour peer Lord Dubs, the co-chair of the APPG on Refugees, in his office afterwards to hear how he and his colleagues are “digging their heels in” to try and amend the Rwanda Bill. Lord Dubs tells Nish what he learnt from a recent trip to Calais to meet asylum seekers first-hand. They also discuss what a more humane asylum system might look like and whether the next Labour government can deliver it. Back in the studio, Nish and Coco discuss the extent to which arts and culture can have the power to bring about change.
    With special thanks to Altitude Films and Think-Film Impact Production.

    Lovely to see Alf Dubs. He was MP for Battersea and very good for the constituency. His views on immigration contain the kind a compassion that is lacking in most other politicians who seem to regard the issues as ones they can treat with cruelty and hostility to gain the votes of people who are ignorant and whom they see no need to challenge and educate. So refreshing to know that people like Lord Dubs are in the world.

    Dear Pod Save The UK, please look into whether a think tank is advising the Tories on the Rwanda Bill, considering the possibility an ulterior motive is at play, such as chipping away at international recognition of human rights.

    Alf Dubs was my introduction to politics, as he was my MP while I was growing up in the 1970s - a man so highly respected in the community that, when a mural was painted at the end of my street called "Battersea In Perspective" in 1989, showing everything that was good about Battersea, he was included on it - and it's still there to this day.
    And he wasn't alone in being a political trailblazer, for the mural also depicts the UK's first black Council Leader, and the country's first Indian heritage MP - Alf's in good company

    Stopping dangerous illegal boat crossings on the basis of protecting those people is completely legitimate. Those trips are dangerous for a number of reasons.
    If you're reaching a point where you can cross the channel from France by boat, why is it they can't apply for asylum legally without making a dangerous trip? Is France a danger too? Furthermore how is a Lord promoting law breaking while painting further restriction of that act as "nonsense"?

    • @Aranel_Alasse
      @Aranel_Alasse 5 месяцев назад +3

      You have to be in the UK to claim asylum here. That's why people say there should be "safe and legal routes" so they don't have to make dangerous journeys. Criminalising people who come on a small boat and threatening to send them to Rwanda, (claiming that it's a safe country for refugees and the sky is green) is not protecting those people and will not stop the crossings. If the government really wanted to stop the boats to protect refugees, they should create safe and legal routes into the country, more efficient processing of claims and removing anyone who doesn't have a valid claim, along with working with authorities in France to target the people trafficking gangs.

    • @RSAnimism
      @RSAnimism 5 месяцев назад

      @@Aranel_Alasse Correct - hence why the Rwanda bill focuses on dangerous illegal crossings. They are criminals. Instead of going through legal routes, they flout rules where they have no respect for legal processes.
      Rerouting them to Rwanda would at the very least slow boat crossings, to suggest otherwise really is nonsense as it is expensive for them.
      There are legal routes and the ECHR overrides national framework where we could consider a claim invalid. That's the point of the Rwanda bill and overriding the courts.

    • @Aranel_Alasse
      @Aranel_Alasse 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@RSAnimism The current processes for legal routes only cover a handful of nationalities and are therefore insufficient and ineffective. The ECHR does not stop countries from rejecting invalid claims. It says that you can't return people to their home country or a third country where they would be at risk of torture or death, e.g. they have a valid asylum claim. Since Brexit, we can no longer send refugees to other EU countries. Pulling out of ECHR would put all of our human rights at risk, not just those of refugees. The Rwanda bill has already cost the UK taxpayer millions and it will cost millions more just to send 300 people to an unsafe country. There are much more cost effective alternatives available. The government making a bill to override the courts and legislate against reality sets a dangerous precedent and we should be extremely worried if it is passed. Nobody is claiming that small boat crossings are a good thing. Those who oppose the Rwanda bill simply see that it won't help matters and there are far better options available to tackle the problem.

    • @RSAnimism
      @RSAnimism 5 месяцев назад

      @@Aranel_Alasse Legal routes exist for all countries.
      The ECHR can dictate what is a "valid" asylum claim, which is against individual countries interests and is what the supreme courts use. It's a lot more than just "torture or death".
      Pulling out of the ECHR would not do that, we would replace most of them with our own bill.
      Rwanda bill is aiming to send a lot more than 300 people, it would be sending nearly all illegal migrants. Ultimately sending them to Rwanda is cheaper, and safer for us.
      Finally, Rwanda is safer than the countries they are escaping from. As are all the countries they pass through to specifically want the UK due to our generous socialist healthcare and benefits system. Taking as many illegal migrants and accepting them at the current pace will bankrupt us, no question.

      @1midnightfish 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@RSAnimism You seem to have missed the bit where they clearly stated that the UK has accepted refugees *from* Rwanda. So it's clearly not a country that vulnerable people should be forcibly relocated to.
