  • MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow returns to Chicago Humanities to expose the shocking truth behind subversive attempts to undermine democracy and the inspiring tales of those who rose to challenge the insurrectionists. Inspired by the research for her #1 Apple podcast, Rachel Maddow Presents: Ultra, Maddow’s latest book 'PREQUEL: An American Fight Against Fascism' tells the World War II story of a committed group of public servants and courageous private citizens thwarting the far-right’s attempts to align our nation with the Nazis. Join Maddow as she sits down with historian, author and Northwestern University professor Kathleen Belew to explore the rise of this wild strain of American authoritarianism, the profoundly relevant insights about America today that can be drawn from its history, and her take on our own unprecedented times.

Most of us Americans don't realize that we did indeed come out on top in WWII but it was by the skin of our teeth. Nothing was assured. Democracy isn't something that we should ever take for granted, nor the liberty and freedoms established under our Constitution and Bill of Rights. We have to stay vigilant and never get apathetic about it.

For real - I've heard the "democracy can end in blink of an eye" speech for years and always thought, no, that's not gonna happen, until really recently, and it is scary to realize how fragile it is. We should be so thankful for how long we've had it and if we can hang onto it.

Power has always worked against and with disregard for the will of the masses, forever! I don't advocate for opposing wealthy people/ corporations but we need to 'handicap' them to level the playing field. After all, wealth is power and always has been. Equality crosses all boundaries and that is how things ought to be.

Would I be sanctioned if I were so silly as to suggest every year we eat the richest man on earth and split up his money? It's just that after a couple of years you'd find Uber rich people getting awful philanthropic to closer we get to the deadline! I wouldn't suggest that, it's just that the math would work;- (not the humanity, though!)

Love Maddow and her use of history, seeking the foundation, and wide view on every subject. She always gives props to journalists on the beat. She has enlightened me to seek sources, even in FB conversations.
I had an acquaintance attempt to argue with me on FB. He stated that a doctor gave him information that squashed my point of view. It turned out the ‘doctor’ was a dr of theology. It took me 2 minutes to google her, and to pull up, copy, and paste her background and her hard core anti-choice views. Fascinating what we can find when we look.

Agreed, and I despair. We have reached a point where we no longer have a national political discourse. With the advance of technology (cable TV and social media), we live in echo chambers that exclude facts, reason, and reality. The House of Reps got this dysfunctional because of the fragmentation of a national discourse into sealed echo chambers. Listen to the Kennedy-Nixon debates. I was shocked to hear discourse about decidable national policy issues. Their debate offered the nation viable political choices. Imagine that! Election deniers seek to reelect the denier-in-chief who forthrightly proclaims how constitutional law must be curbed to conform to his unlawful commands. He tells us what he will do, and many, perhaps most, act as if that's his First Amendment right to political speech. Sounds like national insanity to me. (Rachel explains all this well enough. I worry no one is listening. Between the abuse of the right to free speech and the right to bear arms, we have the ingredients for a successful overthrow of state and federal government as we know it. The next Jan 6 will have a better chance to succeed with or with 45. How do we veer off this madding path toward self-destruction? )

I appreciate this production and admire Ms. Maddow greatly. I have Jewish relatives (by marriage) who live in the US and I wish would come home to Canada (our anti-semitism exists but like everything in Canada, it's a LOT less than in the US). BUT in all this I have to make one point: the US did NOT "win WWII" single-handedly. Because of the very issues that Rachel Identifies, y'all ***DIDN'T EVEN SHOW UP*** until Pearl Harbour (spelled the Canadian way) happened. You'd not have been anywhere without your Canadian and British allies, and the Australians and the rest of the Commonwealth of Nations. So don't telll US that "you" "won" WWII. You got in late in the war, and we were very grateful that you finally woke up and smelled the coffee. BUT CANADA liberated the Netherlands. CANADA was there at D-Day and Juno Beach and other major offensives. Stop forgetting your friends from the north -- for we also joined you in Afghanistan -- ghastly for all involved. Some of us were even stupid enough to join you in Viet Nam. And now you're threatening to elect a fascist in 2024, which makes many of us feel like we're living in the equivalent of Austria during Hitler's rise in Germany. Just sayin'.

As an American, I find it offensive when other Americans say things like we won WWII single-handedly. I call it "spoiled-child-I'm-the-most-important" mentality (typically American). I would like to assure you that a lot of us know history, have great respect for other countries, and understand the concept of allies in war as well as peace. Be assured there are millions of us working to put people with intelligence and integrity back in our White House and Congress. While a free democracy allows for abhorrent views and behaviors to gain traction, it also provides legal means for their removal and replacement. That keeps us from being hopeless and helpless. Complacency has always been a problem here. I value your support and input.

Polish Pilots, living in Britain, learned the language, learned the lingo, and learned how to use the planes. But weren't allowed to fly until Britain, losing half of their squadrons every month, didn't have another choice. British pilots were trained to hang back. Poles practiced intimidation tactics. Guess who convinced Germany to give up? Trust me, there were a lot of turning points. The Poles, sadly weren't allowed to participate in the Victory Parades in London, out of fear of angering Stalin.

@@annwags - I watch The "World War Two in Real Time" and "War Against Humanity" series (from @WorldWarTwo) avidly, and they have now gotten to the part where Churchill, Stalin, and Roosevelt/Truman were trying to figure out what to do with Poland after the war. I knew it was bad for Poland, but I didn't know the part about the Victory Parades in London. That is so disgraceful.

Fabulous book. I'm on page 70.
I do think, though, that American corporate fascism in 2023 is every bit as important as Trump's political fascism, and it's never talked about. If corporations had not been allowed to become the fascist organizations that they now are, the political Republican donor class and the insane money in Republican politics would never have materialized, and neither, therefore, would the political fascism we are now in for. The US is set up to have political fascism only if the corporate fascism goes unchecked, which it has since the 1980s. Until media elites discuss this severe aspect of our politics, Trump will win, and we will go down.

Rachel Maddow is an American treasure. President Biden should make sure she is awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Soon. Make that, Now.

I think an important thing as you read or hear information is to use common sense. So simple but very helpful.

A great book about Huey Long is the historical fiction (but barely fiction, it is so strongly based on facts) is Robert Penn Warren’s ALL THE KING’S MEN. A really great book. Huey Long was nicknamed the Kingfish, hence the book’s title. Robert Penn Warren was both a novelist and poet, one of the agrarian school of poets centered at Vanderbilt University. And Rachel is such a great writer and storyteller herself. Thank you, Rachel. 💕

Don't EVER stop talking, Rachel. You are one of the truest humanitarians on the planet. You deserve a Nobel Peace prize. Everything you say and do carries the torch for those who want peace in the world now.
