Empires fall. It's what they do, with no exception. Regular sized societies too, for that matter. USA has always been an empire. I mean the continental US, before it acquired it's global influence. The size, the political, economic, cultural and geographic diversity mean it always ticked all the boxes. It tried to disintegrate once before over the issue of race. It was held together, firstly through violence, then by a compromise of allowing segregation and putting the national energy in the imperial project, be it manifest destiny, taking over chunks of the Spanish empire or finally global supremacy. With all opponents subdued and global supremacy achieved, there were no more external pressures counteracting the centrifugal forces inherent in the mainland part of the empire. And the GOP, with the recently successful legacy of southern strategy and of sabotaging the functioning and the very concept of state for the benefit of their donors, became a natural depository for those forces. The GOP's behaviour is not maladaptive. At least at a group level, some of them as individuals may suffer. They have now reached close to the fullest expression of what they are. They are likely to be successful, as they are floating with the clearly manifest current of history. This while the democrats, devoted to defunct institutions and ideas continue to handwave in hope of reversing a tide.

@@nosuchthingasshould4175 I share your cynicism to a degree. Modern imperialism is less about land acquisition than it is cultural cooptation, but destructive, none the less. Part of the problem is large societies have grown past their carrying capacity, so to speak. Homo sapiens evolved in small, communal bands where everyone knew everyone & were likely to all be related by blood or marriage. Now, we’re not likely to know the people living in our own neighborhoods. I think humanity’s true problem is finding a way to build community in large-scale societies that don’t appear to be going away, though political systems do tend to fluctuate over time. But, just because large societies historically don’t seem to have staying power, I do think democracy is worth fighting for. Of the political systems that have emerged over the centuries since plant & animal domestication began, democracy has the potential to be the most egalitarian. It’s unregulated capitalism, in my opinion, that makes democracy vulnerable. For sure, politics should not have a monetary incentive, though how we extricate them is beyond me. I certainly don’t want to surrender to a group of authoritarian fascist leaning looney toons, AKA the GOP.

If I look at the opinion statistics (various moderate to progressive sources) quite a few of Republican voters want something of the stuff Biden is doing. Or at least they think it's the decent and appropriate thing to do in our times. Yet the vast majority of their representatives doesn't reflect that. Many of the European conservatives are progressive in comparison. It's easier to fight the extreme right if the right agrees to fight them, too ...

The COVID relief package is hugely popular- by supporting it the Republicans risk nothing a) they can bask in the reflected glory and b) it is budget appropriations so it can be forced through without any republican support which will reflect poorly on them. So IMHO they should be keeping their powder dry for issues like redrawing electoral boundaries, impeachment etc.

Because, when you argue on the the assumption that the perp's behaviors or words have to do with anything but *power and control*, you are falling into the perp's webs. One needs to keep bringing the conversation to: "you did this in the service of sustaining your sense of power/control. Your words are merely a manipulation to incite strong emotion. See 3 HINDS ’ PRECEDENTS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, § 2445 (1907). The Belknap precedent may be somewhat weakened, however, by the fact that his acquittal was based in part on the views of some Senators that impeachment should not be applied to someone no longer in office, id. at § 2467, although the Senate had earlier rejected (by majority vote of 37-29) a resolution disclaiming jurisdiction, and had adopted by vote of 35-22 a resolution affirming that result See id. at § 2007 for an extensive summary of the Senate’s consideration of the issue. See also id, § 2317 (it had been conceded during the 1797 proceedings against Senator William Blount, who had been sequestered from his seat in the Senate, that an impeached officer could not escape punishment by resignation).
