Oh, this is awesome. I recently got into 3-D printing and I want to start making my own figures and now I know how I can fill the gaps. I’m definitely gonna use this method.
I have found recently that if I use all purpose wall filler (spackle) from a pound shop along with cheap superglue over the filler to toughen it up then sand I can get most gaps to cover nicely.
Without the superglue, the sand paper can sometimes eat into the filler and make the gap noticeable again.
Hi Dad. I use Selleys Spakfilla Rapid in my models. When I first came to Sydney Australia in the early 90’s I noticed that due to the clay soil, extreme changes in temperature created cracks in the internal arched doorways. Selleys Spakfilla Rapid was the only product to create a great finish but was also elastic enough for seasonal movements.
It does dry a little chalky but it sands well and takes a proper paint finish.
Never thought of using wood filler to fill in gaps. This was a great idea plus a bit less expensive compared to the milliput. The amount you get in the tub is great also. Great video, loved it.
As a cabinet builder for over 20 years.. the white paste wood filler will shrink and can crack as well.. glazing spot putty won't and here is some FYI when you use the wood filler.. keep a wet sponge handy... you can wipe the white putty and will smooth it with a lot less sanding...
I used to use wood filler a lot on my larger props like helmets before moving to glazing spot putty but never really thought about using it on the figure models, awesome vid 👍🏼

Awesome. I would like to see a preperation video. Picking a model off the supports and fill, wet sand your models too. Basically showing us the level you prepare your models to for painting. It won't be the most sexy video but it would be really useful.

I've tried Filler before and I find Epoxy Sculpt to be my main goto now, it's just so much better imho.
I do use a similar product ‘ stucco in pasto’. Which is basically the same thing but it doesn’t stink. Till now is still works great but only time will tell if maybe cracks will show.
Yes, wood filler works great!!! Back when I've built models. Depending on the gaps size I've used CA glue, wood filler, bondo, and of course the hobby products. Green stuff, tester's putty and Tamiya's putty. Not only this video is informative but best part, my name was mentioned...LOL
Haha man I have built many different types of models including scale models that I flew with remote controls. And there’s always something for the job. The hobby stuff usually works well but costs so much more because it’s for hobby but general purpose stuff from the hardware isn’t specialised so costs so much less. Hopefully I don’t mess up the pronunciation!
I've heard great things about wood filler! I've also heard of a technique to turn wood filler into filler primer. Basically you just take wood filler + mixing medium (I think gloss floor polished was used) + thinner (not sure about ratios). As long as the wood filler is water soluble and thinned down enough it can be sprayed through an airbrush. Pretty cool application, though if I need filler primer I'll just use a spray can of it so I haven't tried this.
Yea it stinks I’d imagine not very good for lungs and stuff if you do spray it. But a spray can of filler primer is probably just as good to be honest. Really was sceptical about this at first. But it’s really great stuff for me.
A channel called Star Forge has a recipe and video for taking wood filler and making it into a sprayable filler. Works pretty well but it’s more for larger props and needs to be sprayed out of a lvlp gun. Also has a recipe for a pretty decent acrylic thinner.
That sometimes happens but il just go over the seems again till it’s full covered/flat.
wow super value video, liked and subscribed, thank you! Found "quick filler for roofs" in my local shop for 5 euro, 1 kg, while milliputty costs 7 euro (10 with shipping) and is 0.114 kg. And I only need filler for smooth surface and wavy sides from fdm print, will try tomorrow.

Iv had good results so far mixing Resin with Baby powder until very thick, it sets with UV light in seconds and is rock hard.

You can get epoxie sculpt or magic sculpt in a 1lb pack (8oz hardener / 8oz resin). Pretty much the same thing as milliput just larger quantities, which ends up costing less per oz.

If you mix milliputt with alcohol you can paint it on as well. Fill the big gaps up with it normally then use it as a putty/slurry over the top.

One way that can be used to make milliput a bit cheaper is mixing with plastiline 1/3 of plastiline into the mix works well

Mix the filler with flour thicken it up and it's easily sculpt able. If you do have some sawdust laying around that works too.

Ive experimented with air dry clay. Works decently. Powdery tho. Nothing water cant clean
What paintbrush did you use? I’m assuming it was easy to clean? Did it impact the quality of the brush after cleaned?

That sounds like you need milliput. Theo part epoxy putty that hardens and can be sanded. It’s not strong for flying parts together but if you made the part then glued it in it’s good!

Noob question: I have an fdm printer (Creator Pro 2) and want to start printing and painting such statues. Judging by the size of your prints you also do them on an fdm printer (correct me if I'm wrong). If yes, are you smoothing them in any way beforehand?
All my characters are done on a resin machine. Even the really large ones. Fdm only for very simple bases. And then I sand them ☺️

Thanks for the video, I actually bought milliput after watching the other video, I have one question, however, how does it look after you prime the figure? I mean, is it noticeable that you filled a gap? 'Cause that happened to me this week after I filled a gap with milliput, so I'm not sure what should I be doing to smooth it out.
Yea I use water and a tool to smooth it out and sand it when it’s dry

how do you clean the residue afterwards? do you sand it after it dries?. Nice tip btw. do you fill yours prints with something to make it stronger? i as thinking of filling it with fine sand..
I didn’t fill anything just wood filler in the gap and sanded once dry. To be fair I’ve used milliput all this time and that stuff is pretty brittle so it’s very comparable
great video i think you will go a long way if you carry on . can i suggest turning the music down to match your voice . this can be done nearly automatically in adobe premier or DaVinci resolve (free version). it seems like you're trying to shout over it .

Not saying I disliked this video, but it is a helpful tool. Sometimes, while you enjoy a creator/channel, you come across a video that is total rubbish and it's good that they learn to keep their subscribers engaged. That's just my two cents though. Love the filler tip!
