She went through so much pain at being abandoned by her father and the guilt of being a vessel of destruction for Tot Musica that she felt she needed to do everything she could for her fans which got utterly twisted by the influence of Tot Musica. I feel Uta's journey saved this movie for me. Yeah, we initially think her motivation is revenge on Shanks for destroying Elegia (which sounds like an amalgomation of the words Elegy & Elysium), but we eventually learn it's her frustration exacerbated by Wake Shrooms because Shanks left her behind, alone. That & the guilt at learning she was the vessal for Tot Musica's Demon King compelled her to act rather than sympathy for the suffering of her fans. All throughout the movie, Uta's motivations & actions remain consistent even as her backstory seemingly changes. They're still twists, but they're the best kind as they can be puzzled out. This makes Red possibly one of the most rewatchable movies in One Piece.

    • @EldeNice
      @EldeNice 2 года назад +3

      Right. Because it makes sense that you would commit mass genocide because of guilt and loneliness. Don't forget that she made her plan before eating Wake-mushrooms. She had to announce her event, set-up the streaming, train for it and get the hidden Tot Musica before trapping everyone in her dream.

    • @IamMeHere2See
      @IamMeHere2See 2 года назад +1

      @@EldeNice When I mentioned her guilt, it was from when Tot Musica used her when she was a child. She didn't learn about her unwitting role in that event until after she found the video denden mushi & before she started sending out videos of her music. Ergo, hee primary motivation for reaching out was guilt, and the concert to ease the suffering of her fans was just a way to atone in her own way. This is reinforced later when her fans want to leave. If she cared about their desire for control over their lives then she would have obliged. However, doing so wouldn't atone for the lives lost when Tot Musica first got out, so she denied them & plunged her dream world into a nightmare.
      I also wouldn't call what she was rrying to accomplish as Genocide. Her plan was to send people to a dream world free of hunger, pain, & loss, & they would have continued on in that world even after she'd gone.

    • @EldeNice
      @EldeNice 2 года назад +7

      @@IamMeHere2See I get what you mean, but in effect it is genocide and her motivation makes absolutely no sense. What makes even less sense is Shanks abandonning her alone with some guy he just met after she killed all his friends and family. It's really shit writing on all levels.

    • @IamMeHere2See
      @IamMeHere2See 2 года назад +6

      @@EldeNice I'm enjoying this discussion. While I can see her actions categorically as genocide, in practice they don't stack as such. Everyone she takes into her dream world will continue to accrue new experiences and not suffer from deprevation or predation. The only caveat is that their bodies in the One Piece world will die, but their dream bodies seem to function exactly the same. They're able to bleed, and that implies the possibility of death.
      The biggest moral quandry for Uta's plan is the lack of choice for people to leave. For example, if your conciousness was uploaded to a Matrix-like construct, then you're trapped however much freedom you have in the construct. But even if your body died, if you lived on in the Matrix then you wouldn't be dead. In that sense, Uta's guilty of mass incarceration & kidnapping, but I wouldn't say genocide.
      I also find Uta's motivation pretty straight-forward. She learned that she played an unwitting part in the massacre of an island, and she wanted to alleviate that guilt by saving people from the problems of the world they lamented over on the Snail network. She hid her intentions under the veneer of selflessness, but her motivations were definitively selfish.
      As for why Shanks left her, I feel that was a bad decision brought on by writing contrivance. Were the Marines really so close? Couldn't he have swung back around to pick her up after a couple months, or a year at most? Sent an innocuous-looking letter? Yeah, the Shanks setup was very contrived. But I know people who double-down on bad decisions with the hope of not letting things potentially get worse, so I at least understand what they were trying to do.

    Thanks! Just saw the film and what a blast. Uta is now one of my favorite characters.
    As for the rest Top Musica is probably the devil from which Uta's devil fruit actually powers exist. Its powers taken from it via separation of its lineage factor then given to her. With the being then later calling back that which was once apart of it. And additionally like the secret behind Luffy's Devil Fruit guided to Uta specifically.
    As for beating Top Musica the first time. They probably didn't. In the movie the ruins actually offer no solution as to how its defeated other than it ran out of steam. Simultaneously attacking Uta was a plan they came up with on the fly

    I like your idea of having exclusively Luffy in the movie out of the crew, but I think having Usopp there too would’ve worked, maybe give him a scene with Uta where they talk about their fathers and their crew.
    Maybe have Usopp tell her that even if they abandoned her, she at least got her chance to go on those adventures with her dad while he didn’t. It fails and brings out Tot Musica. Then when that doesn’t work the entire alliance shows up, starting the final fight.

    My theory on what Tot Musica is that its a combination of the Soul Fruit and the Music Fruit as in a former user of the Soul Fruit transformed something summoned with the Music Fruit into a Homie with A LOT of Lifeforce. this would explain its connection/dependency to the music fruit but also why it stayed alive after the former users died because the homies seem to also stay after the users death. Edit also its design seems to be fitting as a homie and it ties into big mom wanting to catch uta (apart of big moms collection addiction)

    We also get to see the matchups of the strawhats vs the red hair pirates, and how similar the crews are to each other.

    The thing I love the most about this show is it's a guide to friendship that many people need in the 2020s. Everyone is divided about everything now.
    We need to be more like the Straw Hats. Cautiously optimistic and willing to give others a chance. They go into most situations and allow people to show them who they really are and then go from there. Size, shape, race, nationality... none of these things matter when you truly make a friend.
    True friends can go for decades and still be strong.

      1) nobody said they didn't like the movie, don't make things up you want to hear. I said I could never get over the giant crater of a plot hole, that itches the back of my mind and taints the movie.
      2) If it is repeatedly pointed out that the main weakness of your antagonist is his old age, and his second-in-command can fix it with a couple of pokes, it seriously needs to be addressed.
      3) This isn't a "Couldn't this devil fruit power have worked better and changed the situation in a group of many antagonists/protagonist fighting." It's literally the second in command's main ability standing next to the main antagonist's main weakness, throughout the course of the film.
      By Comparison.
      It would be like if at Marineford they reveal that Whitebeard's power was that he can instantly teleport people wherever in the world he wants regardless of distance from the target, showcasing that it works even if the target has sea prism stone handcuffs, and never address why he doesn't use it on Ace. Yea, that would kind of ruin Marineford a bit.

      @@canaldoekl7318 I'm not 100% sure what scene you are talking about, but First off, armament Haki before the time skip wasn't showcased with black color, when it happened it just happened. So it's very possible haki was being used all over without anyone knowing it. Amazon Lily's arc had tons of this happening along with the Sabody arc before it.
      Secondly, I don't recall Kizaru being a major issue that the Whitebeard pirates couldn't handle. It's not like, for example, Akainu couldn't be stopped doing what he did to Ace at all because he was a logia, and nobody had a way of stopping logias. They shut down the admiral's plenty.
      Again, I'm not sure what scene you are referring to, but it is the huge difference of "oh something should have/could have gone a bit differently here given what we know now" kind of plot hole, vs. "the entire plot kind of collapses because of this very obvious, in your face, showcased multiple times thing" kind of plot hole.
      Let's take it to another verse:
      You're complaining about why Superman doesn't just beat up everyone at super speed during a Justice League fight. (It's obviously more fun to see all the members in action)
      I'm complaining that they introduce a new superhero to the team called the kryptonite man, his power being that he can become living kryptonite. They showcase that it can be used for him to easily defeat Superman. Then he ends up meeting the main antagonist General Zod, and proceeds to try to fight him without ever using the superpower during the entire fight, with no explanation as to why.

    I was also thinking Kalifa’s inclusion was odd, but I think I understand the reasoning behind the decision. Blueno plays a not-insignificant part in the film, and Kalifa is there to show us that Blueno is *not* in CP0 like Lucci and Kaku so we shouldn’t be expecting to see more of him. Kalifa was the weakest fighter in CP9, so we can safely say she probably didn’t get into CP0 with Lucci and Kaku, so if she was assigned to the Uta mission along with Blueno, it’s safe to say they’re both still just CP9.

    Having watched the movie last night, I think that Uta's story could have done without the reveal that she knew about how she destroyed the island. If we want to keep the idea that Tot Musica is a demon summoned by that specific song, the better way of handling it might have been that when she is told she destroyed the island it sends her into a deep depression and she suddenly feels that her music can't bring happiness, and she sees the only possible option as just unleashing Tot Musica again in destruction. If she can't save anyone with her singing, she can only hope that Tot Musica destroys it all.

    An interesting detail, that I wanna point out, having examined 'Tota Musica' and specifically it's runes
    When you break it down, the song is invoking the power of Odin, with things like Ansuz being the rune representing him, and runes like Kenza and Halagaz paired with it having the potential to be refering to his status as either the allfather in Halagaz, or his status as a god of wisdom in Kenza.

    I found interesting the comparison from Uta and Blackbeard, the demon king Tot musica had 3 skulls on the belt just as blackbeards flag and 3 pistols on his belt and also the piano key on tot musica just like BB's teeth and the fact that Uta didnt sleep and blackbeards was also known for never sleeping. Could it be possible that he eats those shrooms or any connection with Tot Musica? Theres so many questions even tho its not canon you can see that the gorosei were more worried about tot musica than anything else and they were a bit resistent to take action because of Shanks being a decendant of Figarland? Like the nika litteraly appeared at the end and the gorosei werent even shown, like tot musica was more important

    This was so good! I don't think someone new to the series or who isn't caught up with the manga would get that much out if it, but for someone already invested in the series this was a pure sugar rush. So many great moments for individual characters. And the Red Hair pirates are so cool!!! I'm actually kind of dreading the endgame of the series because Shanks has a huge death flag flying, and I'm low key anxious about watching that.

    I loved that Uta was a no-holds-bar tragic villain. I actually did not think she would be that from her design and the trailers, but I was pleasantly wrong. When I saw the movie, I wanted to know what Shanks apparently had done too Uta and Elegia. Then the first flashback came, and I knew there was more to it. I then saw the truth, and the movie kinda lost me. It felt like it undercut the tragedy and her agency while conveniently absolving her of guilt, all because of a random song demon and Shanks' great lie. But then we found out that Uta knew the hole truth and still executed her plan/hated Shanks for breaking her heart, lying to her and leaving her almost alone for 12 years. I loved it so much, because that made her so much more awesome as a tragic villain. Tot Musica was the weakest point in the movie, but it was not a deal breaker for me, and I think she used it because her enemies in both worlds were pushing her up in a corner. Besides, she was on mushrooms at that time (hardcore btw), which messed with her logic. She knew the consequences of consumption, but did it anyway because of her saviour plan/complex.
    Spoiler!
    And then she died to sing people out of her dream world after getting closure with Shanks and Luffy! It was amazing! Uta was and amazing character and hardcore tragic villain to me. (I had hoped that Shanks would have apologized to Uta for his lie, but I guess it did not matter in the end).

    Went and saw it yesterday. I agree with almost everything you said here. Backlight, fleeting lullaby, and tot musica were my favorite. I just wished tot musica was more audible like how new genesis and I'm invincible were. There was just so much going on that the song was played more as background music than a part of her performance. I got my coworker into one piece and she's manga only and is caught up but her 6/7 year old daughter got into one piece thanks to Netflix unbeknownst to my coworker until she got to alabasta arc. I think the kid only has seen what Netflix has available here in the states for the dubbed version which i think is only up to ep 325. But she's seen all the movies available on Netflix as well which is strong world film z and not sure what else. She's too young to care about spoilers. Lol. But they went to see the movie today (dubbed obv for the kid) and I texted her to see how it went and they both loved the movie. With a side note of "sunny was cute" lol 😆

    Tbh I would like to see them put Uta in canon story since we see her silhouette in a manga chapter for one panel. So I would like just a small piece of story for her with different ending. It didnt get me to tears but i have and understanding of what Shanks and his crew were feeling in that final scene. Wish it could end different in a canon storyline.

    I made sure to look at my watch when Shanks and the RH pirates fully appeared and joined the story (not just in flashbacks), and it was when the film had 45 mins left. Very satisfying that you got to see them for the while 45.

    They beat Tot Musica the first time because Uta fell asleep. They said that. She didn't have the stamina, so she fell asleep. Either that severed the connection to the dream world, allowing them to defeat Tot Musica in a temporary sense, or that just banished it altogether. She couldn't fall asleep this time because of the mushrooms

    wasn't the first time it was defeated because Uta just fell asleep? and the problem in this film was that she was not going to sleep, but die, thus the getting everyone stuck in there?
    I do agree with everything else you said, there are quite a few unanswered questions and things that were done "because plot device and not enough time to think about that", but it was very well produced overall imo and OMG that moment with Usopp and his father communicating I started being REALLY excited and paid closer attention it was truly THE highlight of the movie for me!

    So you said that tot musica doesn't really make sense in the real world (of one piece) and at first I agreed however (several hours later) I'd like to poke at that a bit, I think it actually could make a lot of sense if you look at Brooke a little closer. pre-timeskip we knew very little about his devil fruit other than it allowed his soul to return to his body after death. Post-timeskip we see he can remove his soul from his body at will and against big mom he was able to manipulate the souls of the chess soldiers and free them, turning them back into normal chess pieces. That being said his attacks are majorally based in music based attacks and or his sword, his devil fruit doesn't seem to be offensive at all, unless it's mixed with his music. In short I think music itself may have been some form of magic in the world of one piece.
