    The winding action of the Steinhart is sooo buttery smooth. Almost feels like it’s not even winding! Just wish I didn’t have girly wrist or I would’ve kept mine. My smiths is running +5 spd or less! Great little watch. Sucks to hear you’re having problems with yours

    I've had a similar problem with the seconds hand on a Seiko SARB033. It was probably caused by damage in delivery. I ended up returning that as faulty.
    I'd normally try to get that repaired under warranty, as that is not a normal behavior for a watch. Another option is to have the case opened and movement removed, and then doing a tweak on the seconds hand directly.

    You might want to consider a Marine National style elastic band for that CWC. Some variations can be used with fixed lugs, some can't. Also, Marathon makes a lovely leather Nato strap. They used to make a single piece leather strap, but I don't see that on their site anymore. Haveston makes canvas single piece straps which are comfortable. Marathon makes true US military spec single piece nylon straps which are highly regarded for their comfort and build quality. And, an outfit in Helsinki makes some single piece leather straps, and zulu style straps, Finn, I think is their name. They specialize in custom leather work.
    I think there are other options besides a nylon Nato that would be less schweaty and schtinky in the hot weather. Maybe even a perlon.

      The other problem with the Weldon Spring bar(Really not a ‘spring’ bar)...The single pass NATO’s have the hardware on both ends so you can’t use a single pass… Another annoying thing...I understand the purpose but functionally forMost people it just Limits the strap choices to one type… A double pass nato

    I have the new version of the Smiths Everest with the Miyota 9039 and the rivet bracelet. I took the bracelet right off because I am not a bracelet person. I put it on an Uncle Seikos tropic strap and it has been my daily wearer for 3 weeks now and I absolutely love it. The bracelet is really nice so I put it on Ebay so someone else can use it and if you are interested ot is on there as we speak. I have not had any issues with my watch stopping, in fact it is averaging +4/5 seconds a day since I got it. Like you said in your first video it is a slow burn. I love this watch so much that I am selling my Christopher Ward C65 handwound because after wearing the Everest the 41mm of the CW is just to big. I can see the Everest being my main wearer for some time to come. Thanks for the reviews. FYI I am using my wifes google account thus a womans name.

    Why on earth do they continue making mechanical movements? Nice looking watches , particularly the Smiths

    • @RobertBlanchard
      @RobertBlanchard  Год назад +1

      Because there is something so special about the mechanical engineering that goes behind making a movement… but I am a geek for micro engineering (and also build and design watches) so I have an affinity to them… that said my favorite movement is the Accutron Astronaut 214…. Here is an excerpt from Hodinkee article about this often overlooked watch/tuning fork movement:
      Accutron's tuning fork (in the Accutron 214 movement) vibrates at 360 Hz and uses a button-cell battery. Attached to one limb of the tuning fork is a minute pawl tipped with a nearly invisible ruby jewel. As the tuning fork vibrates the pawl moves back and forth and this drives an index wheel with 360 teeth. The index wheel especially was at the time a wonder of miniaturization and micro-engineering, with teeth so fine that they are invisible to the naked eye. The mechanism has its advantages and disadvantages just like any other piece of engineering, but the high frequency meant that Accutron wristwatches, clocks, and timing mechanisms offered unprecedented reliability, often better than 1 sec/day. The fact that they would run on electric power with no requirement for a mainspring also made them highly suitable for use in aerospace applications.

    That Steinhart is spectacular! As for the Smiths, I’ve never been a fan of the Explorer look. The bezel on the Steinhart reminds me of the old Bakelite models, muted and sophisticated for a sports watch.

    I agree with you on the Smiths logo. I think it is too large and the font is too thick. A thinner, smaller font together with the crown logo which they use on the other watches in their range would be much nicer. It would also tie it to the heritage of the watch much better. Not sure why the branding is so different on this model.

    BUYER BEWARE: I own this Steinhart watch and I have one big gripe with it. The red portion of the bezel absolutely do not look as crisp in real life as it does on picture or film. If anything, the color is more pinkish than red with the numbers within it also being very dull and rather hard to discern. For this reason the watch is a disappointment to me. I wrote this in a review to Gnomon Watches, where I bought the watch and subsequently pointed it out to Steinhart as well. So far though, a couple of weeks later, Gnomon has not posted the review and neither Gnomon nor Steinhart has responded to me.

      Replicates the old Rolex Bakelite bezel.

    • @tiltedrealizations8610
      @tiltedrealizations8610 4 года назад +1

      @Pat Bateman Well, I have nothing against vintage styling or even faux patina. My original gripe with this buy (not watch, mind you) was the fact that Gnomon is running a dishonest business when they don't publish adverse reviews, and Steinhart (in this case) don't seem to care being associated with that. As far as this particular watch goes, I've concluded that it simply "suffers" from being too photochenique with the camera picking up details and colors that the naked eye will miss, thus setting you up for a disappointment if you buy the watch based only on what the pictures and video will show you. I have since paired the watch with a high quality, chocolate brown, distressed leather strap, which helps bringing the bezel forward, making the whole ensemble look MUCH, MUCH better. Only problem I have no, I set out to buy a homage diver, which I feel I haven't accomplished. So when I do buy one within the next several months, it too will probably be a Steinhart, as I have researched this corner of the market extensively and I just can't find another place with a better bang for the buck.

    • @RobertBlanchard
      @RobertBlanchard  3 года назад

      @@27madnoor Well, I personally like the smaller watch look on the wrist, its just truer to the nature of what the 1016 was supposed to be, understated performance tool watch. And that is what you get with the 36mm Smith. As with the new 39mm Explorer and the Smiths 40mm its to 'Hey look at me!' Also the proportions of the 40mm Smith just don't look right to my eye. But the real way to measure is not the diameter, its the lug length which on the 39mm Explorer is 47mm so a 7.5 inch wrist should look decent (especially now that the hour hand is proportionally sized). On the other hand the Smiths I believe is 50mm... so that will be a lot of mass on the wrist.
