The abandoned building roof deck needed some more green, so I build a DIY planter box from cedar lumber and white GFRC concrete. I think the integrated white concrete bench really takes this raised planter box to the next level. As always, I’m using Fishstone’s GFRC concrete products to make the bench super thin. And for the lumber, I went with 4” cedar boards.

three ideas for the future roof top deck: 1) shade sails 2) projector screen like your old place 3) Bar. That is all. Your content is my fav on all the youtubes!
Shade sails might not survive the winter in Chicago if not taken down. Something retractable would be better suited. Personally, being a pet owner, I'd love to see a good "dog potty" area since pet owners in the city have to contend with this issue a lot, but there's barely any good solutions available.
I have an idea for your rooftop. Put some planters on the 'sill' that goes against the brick wall and plant some climbing plants. They resist the winter, need almost no care, and in the summer they would fill out that wall and look amazing. (Also, some varieties give gorgeous tones in the fall).
Good ideia.
If you want to avoid the roots dry, use a water timer attached to a hose... so you never will forget to wet them. Greetings from Spain.
Mui bien. :)
He could also use a smart irrigation timer that will automatically adjust to the weather. Combined with drip irrigation lines, that's how I keep my plants and flowers happy in California.
I'm glad you're ok and still building. I don't want to bring back the health issue you went through, but I'm glad you're doing well. I didn't get to wish you well when I saw that video. Anyway, I was the same guy that suggested to build a home gym one day when you barely just bought the building a couple of years ago right when the pandemic hit. I'm sure you remember the conversation and not me in particular but I just wanted to bring that up. Haha! Keep the videos coming, man!
The prize of what?
I mean, thank you, but was there a process?
Sorry to let you know but that’s a scam comment don’t message them
As usual, the pop culture references are on point, but nothing was better than a Johnny Drama “VICTORY!!”
People Questions: Where's Cat? Is that your new assistant?
I can't believe it's Episode 36 !!
The roof top deck needs a bar and brick BBQ for cookouts, the movie theatre you've already got is cool definitely keep that!
Ultimate for me is ease of upkeep. I'm talkin' access panels, easy to clean, secure, but easy to disassemble if necessary. Something that doesn't require resealing every year. And lawn games. Bocce Ball? Maybe Beersbee or Cornhole - but all in dedicated out of sight receptacles. Also, probably a heating hood for the wintertime and a stash of outdoor blankets. Can't wait to see how it turns out!
When will you stop calling it "Abandoned Building"? You have done so much work and put so much love into it.
Personally, I hope he never stops calling it the abandoned building. It’s a reminder of the start of the project and all of the plans he had for the building. It could be used as motivation to keep going despite all of the setbacks we’ve seen thus far!
The progress he has made is unbelievable. I am just so happy to have been watching this series from the beginning.
its a good title so why would he
So we know it's part of his building serious. Some people use different captions which makes it hard finding the next videos.
Now you need a "Caulk Talk" t-shirt in your merch shop. I'm glad you're feeling better. I got covid a few months back. it only really had me down for like 3 days--three miserable days where I mostly slept and zombie-walked to the bathroom when I had the energy, but even after I was better, the cough wouldn't go away... I had it for almost a month after the covid was gone.
I’d buy one! 😆
That roof top is just great. You should get some solar panels in there too as will help with the energy bill :)
You definitely have to have a bar of some sort on that roof, lighting is going to be key for whatever you choose. Like mind blowing lighting. It can get clicks too
Keep an eye on the trees when it is windy. Sometimes the lighter non-soil mediums don't fully secure the trees. If so, do what is done with bonsai trees and tie the trees down with some wire. Ofc, keep the trees from growing too tall also, as that is when the wind really can get them.
I was really excited to have calk talk back in a episode. Thanks for this great idea. I have a couple fruit trees that need replanting at my BBQ area. I'll use the seat part as a table top.
Whoever that guy was in the Purdue bucket hat looks pretty cool, I bet he’d be really good at editing videos too!
I think the rooftop deck needs lots of secret/nifty compartments. As others have said, it probably should include a bar. I think a nifty compartment is something like in your kitchen where the coffee and toaster goes.
Of all of the remodels and builds of unique houses/workshops I've seen over the years on RUclips, this is still easily my favorite and the one that I wish was mine.
CAULK TALK IS BACK!!! YES YES YES! THIS CHANNEL IS GLORIOUS AGAIN!!!
I think those trees died from lack of water. Should get a drip system with a timer so you don't have to remember to water them. Or some Hoyas.
I was gonna say this. I think this soilless mix might drain very fast making the issue worse if there is no automatic watering system
@@goodasnew5350 More on a rooftop that get get by direct sun all day. Those poor trees will die very fast. They can be in direct sun pero they need consistent water to survive.
Ultimate rooftop deck must include outdoor bar/kitchen
Been following since you moved into the new building. I'm very happy for you with how things are coming along. Looking forward to when you can finally kick back, relax, and enjoy all of your hard work.
Glad you're ok and Covid free!
I like how "Caulk Talk"™ is a thing now, but now you've started speeding it up, I have to ask: Is there going to be a time when you caulk block the caulk talk? 😉
You could try and build a one of a kind hot tub to blend in or stand out from your deck.
Yes! So glad caulk talk came back. It's nice to get an old school video like classic Modustrial Maker stuff before the abandoned building renovation.
Watching this felt like I just watched a show on PBS from the early 2000s I like it, felt nostalgic
This video is about to make my day 10x better! loving how the building is coming along.
A big bench with a sink, storage for pillows, bbq and pizzaowen. Maybe a built-in doghouse with cooling at the end. And a "floating" bar with drinks, to gather people when cooking. Would love to see som fancy lighting that can sync to music (Philips hue?) :)
Love the planter. One possible upgrade could be to use the space under the concrete seat as a cold box for drinks by insulating the sides and bottom and having the seat as the lead. Just an idea. Love all your work and keep it coming. Cheers
As always glad to see you're doing well and the process is going well!!
I really missed the caulk talk segments in your recent videos! Thanks for bringing it back!
I bet Bruce is going to love having a little bed on the planter and hanging out with you on the roof-top! Hope you, Kat and Brice are all doing well!
Mike the planter looks amazing . All the time you put in this project to make it come out just right . Now you have a beautiful functional place of furniture for your roof .
I love to see how much fun you have during these videos.
Oeh that brick wall can definitely be covered in some wooden slats and some climber plants with a nice waterfall in the middle, some plants surrounding it and lights. I also think those metal railings behind the planter box can be covered to make the space more private. I don't like those black blocks on the floor...And that opening on the side of the building facing the other concrete top (?) is also screaming to be dealt with. You can maybe put in a pergola for shade, you definitely need a bbq, a bar and a jacuzzi. And a lot more decking! Oeh! And what about a pizza oven?!
I'm so glad you're ok. Damn Carona! Leave him alone!
What's up my guy hope you are healing up well my friend👍👍👍👍
Rooftop bar is a must
I WAS JUST THINKING ABOUT YOU! SO GLAD YOU UPLOADED. IT LOOKKS GREAT!
Yay, caulk talk! 😆
Started watching your channel when you were just starting with GFRC and "dexterfying" your shop because it was too cold out! You've come sooo far, been such an adventure to watch.
I think someone needs to remind you that you don't have to prove anything. Yes, you got through that scary surgery, yes, you are recovering well. But it's a process, there isn't an 'on' 'off' switch. No, you can't go leaping back into the way you were before the wake-up call. No, you aren't malfunctioning. But yes, things have changed. I learnt about what they teach sergeants in the military - if or when you lose touch with the officers during a battle (yes you're in a battle just like the rest of us) the sergeants are trained to Adapt! Improvise! Overcome! and they do it with great aggression. You, however need to do it with calmness and confidence. Don't mind me - nurses are never off duty even if they're over 75! All the best. Your home is looking wonderful. Thanks for the vids
Don't forget to get a water source on your deck. Something you can turn off during the winter.
I saw what I suspect is a projector screen up there, right? I like the idea of a hidden/pop up screen & (outdoor) speakers/steroe for a true, yet subtle, movie-theater experience
Would love to see you make a mitre saw station! Awesome project. Love the roof space, so much potential!
Some stained glass elements would be rad in the ultimate deck. Take advantage of all that beautiful light. Winter pays for summer…
Another awesome build and video Mike! The concrete bench was a great addition too!
I can't wait for Season 2 of Modustrial Maker - where you sell this for building for 10x profit, buy another wreck and start it all again!
Roof Top idea, an outdoor skylight that opens
So glad to see caulk talk back
This looks amazing! Always love the view from your rooftop.🌸
Stoped by to get some inspiration to see your back to hale a hardy again! Wonderful !
So glad he used liner. The relief was immense.
Definetily need lots of pink\purple neon lights and some neon palms\flamingoes\etc. 80's ftw for the chillin' space)
Ha. That’s my favorite episode of Entourage.
See if your roof can support the load, and do a planted intensive green roof with custom light concrete furniture, and recycled plastic plank Adirondack chairs. Since it probably can’t, you should do a living green wall on the brick (if you can), an extensive green roof, and solar shade structure, and some nice furniture. Chicago has Green and Solar roof incentive that you should look into to get a rebate.
For the most part I don't care for concrete counters, BUT I LOVE that white one! (bench) I think you may have changed my mind. Keep up the COOL 😎 work!
I'm all about gardening...in planters and boxes only. Thanks for video and for the "soil mix" idea. If it were me, I might have lined the panels with the plastic prior to final assembly. Now for fresh veggies and berries.
Ultimate rooftop deck with multiple floors. a movie viewing room on the first floor open to the air and a chill out floor above.
Whooo, new episode 😍
I found when I bought cedar planks from Home Depot they are so green and wet still I don’t need spacers just smash them as close as you can, and they shrink as they dry to 1/8 -1/4 inch gap. When I need less of a gap I actually have to let them dry for a couple weeks before I use them
Love it. Built my Skybar on rooftop of cabin annex here in Sweden.
I've never seen anyone do it, but to me the ultimate rooftop deck would have a small dumb-waiter/elevator for sending food/drinks/supplies up to avoid carrying. I have no idea if that is something that you could do on your own, or if it is even remotely feasible based on budget and the roof structure but it sure would be cool.
How about a rooftop kitchen?
@@tomnorman5461 With a part time sink that reuses the greywater for the planters & coolers vs a fridge..
Looks great, also did not know about the 2 x 4 trick... thanks!
I am very thankful for the ruclips.net/user/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO that has been a tremendous help to me in building a perfect outdoor shed. I have been facing many challenges and difficulties for a long time, but this plan has guided me to correct the mistakes during the process. I am impressed by the projects and I express my gratitude to the creator of this collection of plans.
I always get excited when you post.
You should get that checked out
@@sullivanwagner1996 umm what? You good?
Nice work on the planter! My vote for the deck would be a really nice grill plus food prep area. Everything is really coming together out there, can't wait to see what else you have in the works!
sooo happy caulk talk is back ❤️
Very nice build Sir. Glad ur feeling better 🙏🏾
He's back to save summer 😎👍
Looks great! I hope the new plants will do better in their new home. I like the bench addition. Might want to integrate that into a planter box design for my back yard.🤔
Thanks Tedd!
Beautiful work, dude! Nicely done! 😃
Now you need some adirondack chairs there!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Nicely done Mike! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
I would suggest planting a vine/wisteria, or any kind of climbing plant behind the sofa, they don't need much maintenance and would develop on the wall and make everything green
Outdoor pizza oven and LEDs. Nothing can be ultimate if it doesn't have fully addressable LEDs. Oh, and a small stage so you can turn it up to 11.
Looking forward to your future builds for you deck I think it would be amazing if you made a privacy wall if leds in the trim basically outlining the top
Idea's for the future rooftop deck: concrete planters, home made hot tub, sun tarp.
Keep up the amazing work!
I’d love to see someone appraise this building for its current value
I hope you are going to have a hot tub for those long, cold Chicago winters!
Another awesome video! I'm not so sure that the size of your seating qualifies it as being a 'bench' though, more like a 'seat'? (grin) Glad your feeling better, keep up the good work!
Bar, big screen TV, and multiple firepits/heaters for extended Fall-time use
Great video Mike!
For the ultimate roofdeck build: I'd say use that neighbours' wall to your advantage. Maybe use it as the back wall of a rooftop bar, or perhaps get a few wooden beams, screw them into that wall and use them as a sunscreen-like feature for a patio.
Don't forget about your Discord server by the way! Lots of fans are in it that'll be willing to help you out come up with awesome ideas and such. Keep up the good work!
Ceder hot tub like on hot tub time machine on rooftop deck would be awesome in winter
I really like the graffiti/artwork on the shop walls. They came out great
So nice. I did something like that the first time i went to live alone but it was for my living room. The only thing I would change is to srew the cladding from the inside of the planter
self contained water feature, and herb/salad wall using hydroponics would be really sweet in that area, ofc a Grill/BBQ area mandatory. Hello from AUS!
I'm looking forward to that ultimate deck! It's definitely going to need at least a fire pit and a hot tub!
Or maybe even one of those swim spa infinity pools where you can swim laps in place!!
i'm sure his roof structure will loooove bearing the load of a hot tub :p
Nice job on the planter and seat.👍🏻
Glad you are feeling better. Did not need Covid.
thanks Scott!
the return of Caulk Talk!!
i had forgotten about kalk talk, nice throwback :D
Really upping the ante in terms of editing, nice work.
No appearances by Kat?
Looking really nice so far on the roof. That's a massive rooftop, you should definitely take advantage of the space up there! If its in the middle of a big city it's frankly the only way you will get that much outdoor space.
I have always liked pergolas and with a retractable sheet to provide shade as opposed to umbrellas being as I live in Illinois wind does not like umbrellas
LET'S GO CAULK TALK WENT BACK ON STAGE !!!!!!
Looks good!
I hope everything is going great for you. I've noticed a we're not getting as much content as before your health issues and hoping you get to feeling better. Here's to the future and 1 million subs.
I'm always here for plants. What if you built a terrarium of a kind? Could mimic the super modern crystal design and either have hardy perennials or swap it out every few warm months. Other than my over fondness for plants, I think it can make a space like the rooftop a lot more welcoming and relaxing. Not to mention the cooling effect of simply having plants in an area...anyway I think it'd be neat.
Wow that's very beautiful design. Very nice video. Can't wait to see more videos soon. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Keep making. God bless.
thanks Jared!
@@modustrial your very welcome
U rock Mike wish you did more videos 😎
Been a while since I heard caulk talk and boy did I miss it
please avoid carrying or doing heavy lifting by urself. im so glad your doing what you love to do again. cheers and continue doing these kinds of video. great content.
