The abandoned building roof deck needed some more green, so I build a DIY planter box from cedar lumber and white GFRC concrete. I think the integrated white concrete bench really takes this raised planter box to the next level. As always, I’m using Fishstone’s GFRC concrete products to make the bench super thin. And for the lumber, I went with 4” cedar boards.

Shade sails might not survive the winter in Chicago if not taken down. Something retractable would be better suited. Personally, being a pet owner, I'd love to see a good "dog potty" area since pet owners in the city have to contend with this issue a lot, but there's barely any good solutions available.

I have an idea for your rooftop. Put some planters on the 'sill' that goes against the brick wall and plant some climbing plants. They resist the winter, need almost no care, and in the summer they would fill out that wall and look amazing. (Also, some varieties give gorgeous tones in the fall).

Anyway, I was the same guy that suggested to build a home gym one day when you barely just bought the building a couple of years ago right when the pandemic hit. Ultimate for me is ease of upkeep. I'm talkin' access panels, easy to clean, secure, but easy to disassemble if necessary. Something that doesn't require resealing every year. And lawn games. Bocce Ball? Maybe Beersbee or Cornhole - but all in dedicated out of sight receptacles. Also, probably a heating hood for the wintertime and a stash of outdoor blankets. Can't wait to see how it turns out!

I had it for almost a month after the covid was gone.

Keep an eye on the trees when it is windy. Sometimes the lighter non-soil mediums don't fully secure the trees. If so, do what is done with bonsai trees and tie the trees down with some wire. Ofc, keep the trees from growing too tall also, as that is when the wind really can get them.

Oeh that brick wall can definitely be covered in some wooden slats and some climber plants with a nice waterfall in the middle, some plants surrounding it and lights. I also think those metal railings behind the planter box can be covered to make the space more private. I don't like those black blocks on the floor...And that opening on the side of the building facing the other concrete top (?) is also screaming to be dealt with. You can maybe put in a pergola for shade, you definitely need a bbq, a bar and a jacuzzi. And a lot more decking! Oeh! And what about a pizza oven?!

I think someone needs to remind you that you don't have to prove anything. Yes, you got through that scary surgery, yes, you are recovering well. But it's a process, there isn't an 'on' 'off' switch. No, you can't go leaping back into the way you were before the wake-up call. No, you aren't malfunctioning. But yes, things have changed. I learnt about what they teach sergeants in the military - if or when you lose touch with the officers during a battle (yes you're in a battle just like the rest of us) the sergeants are trained to Adapt! Improvise! Overcome! and they do it with great aggression. You, however need to do it with calmness and confidence. Don't mind me - nurses are never off duty even if they're over 75! All the best. Your home is looking wonderful. Thanks for the vids

Since it probably can’t, you should do a living green wall on the brick (if you can), an extensive green roof, and solar shade structure, and some nice furniture. Chicago has Green and Solar roof incentive that you should look into to get a rebate.

I hope everything is going great for you. I've noticed a we're not getting as much content as before your health issues and hoping you get to feeling better. Here's to the future and 1 million subs.

I'm always here for plants. What if you built a terrarium of a kind? Could mimic the super modern crystal design and either have hardy perennials or swap it out every few warm months. Other than my over fondness for plants, I think it can make a space like the rooftop a lot more welcoming and relaxing. Not to mention the cooling effect of simply having plants in an area...anyway I think it'd be neat.
