My basement makeover is complete!!! Well almost haha ;) I'm so proud to have decorated this space with entirely thrifted finds minus the TV and rug! It took a lot of patience but I am loving the transformation. What do you think? I'd love to know your favorite piece I showcased! Comment below =)

I think you should paint the beams a color that compliments your sofa's color and then add cool pillows to tie everything together. You're so talented and it's fun to watch you get so excited about finding treasures!
I have to say I’ve never been a fan of mid century modern, I know don’t gasp😀 you have styled your home so beautifully that I’m seeing the light. I’m 68 years old next month so you see I grew up with early American, mid century modern, traditional. You have got the Eye for it for sure. Beautiful 🤩

You have GREAT taste. I am also on the look out for any type of mid century bull when I’m out thrifting here in the UK. Wanda, I’m 67 and same for me. I grew up with this style (also like Laura, in Oregon). I’m very nostalgic for some of the things from that era. Laura does it up better that the originals!! I love her esthetic! 💚💚💚
I feel the same way. I am a vintage glass/transfer ware/salt glaze pottery/states metal collector. I never cared for mid century or bohemian decor until I found Laura’s channel. Now I’m always on the watch for her latest video and have binge watched so many of her videos. She’s so likable and talented.
68 in September here in coastal NC. And yes, so aware because I saw this style in TV shows, but I grew in in a less than affluent place that never got on board with mid century. All family and locals were still stuck in the 40s and 50s. A friends mother got an aluminum Christmas tree with the twirling multicolored light. I thought it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
I like all the variation in wood tones - including the beams. The sectional is perfect.
Your space is beautiful! I like the side by side idea for the globe. Having a board behind the sofa for drinks is a great, practical idea.
Laura, what a beautiful job you have done with that cozy room! I'm 72, female, and you have taken me back in time, lots of memories of my mom and dad's lamps, wall clock and furniture. I'd like to see more about Jessie's record album collection; I still collect and play mine on my turntable from years ago: love that original sound, nothing compares to it. I did not even see that little cabinet behind the tension shelving unit until you pointed it out! I love the warm cozy feel of the wood. Really glad you didn't paint anything! Looks great
I think the idea of a shelf behind the couch is a brilliant idea!
Everything looks amazing! I can't choose a favorite item. I think you were right to hesitant about painting the beams black. On the video the darker brown tone of the beams blends so nicely with the other wood tones. Black might be too jarring. Whatever you decide, it will be perfect. A wooden rail behind the couch would be take up little space and would be very convenient for drinks. I didn't even notice the cabinet that hides the duct work until you pointed it out. It is not an eyesore. Wonderful room!

I was going to say the same thing about the wood covering the vent behind the shelf. It blends in and nearly disappears, plus it serves a function to lean the art work on.

I was born in 1952 and grew up calling a sofa a "davenport". When I got to grade school nobody knew what I was talking about! it was like a foreign language. While sofa and couch are interchangeable, most people in the trade use the word sofa. I have spent three days binging you on RUclips. You are so very talented and relaxing to watch! Thank you!
My generation grew up calling them couches. Funny for each generation and region has their own words 😆 I can’t wait to see what the younger generations call them.

....And yes yes yes to the full length sofa table behind the couch! Brilliant. Add circular holes ever so often for cords to enter for chargers for guests or lamps or lit decor. You won't regret them.

Yes to the board behind the couch for shelving/drinks/lights/plants. I had one for years and recently got rid of it and then it absolutely did turn into a hassle trying to figure out where to put drinks and food. Plus they add dimension and more visual architectural elements. You could also make it shelving down behind the couch to put away things you may not have other space for, like photo albums, blankets, etc.
Or for storing food storage and emergency preparedness items.
Laura, your room makeover is so cozy even though it is so spacious! You are such a go getter with so many great memories!! Your home is created with love, may you have many happy years there!!
At 12:47---talking about your glass top coffee table contrasting well with the rug's texture.....honestly, it's the BEST contrast/compliment to your HUGE sofa. I know from experience that having a glass top table in a space with heavy furniture effectively keeps a feeling of 'flow' and greatly reduces the feeling of BULK that solid tables (even smaller ones) create when paired with super heavy/large furniture.
Omg Laura, I definitely think you should do the DIY table behind the couch! I also LOVE your space, it looks so cozy. Those bookshelves were made to go in your home.

I'm a vote for the side-by-side globes. I think your shelf behind the sofa is a great idea. It's not fun to make that huge reach especially if you are one of short stature and grabbing your beverage is an entire trip. lol

The narrow ledge behind the sectional is an excellent idea. I have done this in a couple of clients' homes and it works great. Any surface which blends with your decor works a treat.

The thing I love most about your space....is you have designed it to celebrate family, togetherness and fun. Anyone fortunate to be invited to your movie night is surely to feel very welcomed. Awww this just made me tear up! My 7 year old niece begs her mom to let her come over whenever she’s coming by to check out the progress. It makes me so happy! After 4 years of feeling isolated because the traffic was so terrible to get to our home, this is the exact reason we moved back 🥰 To create these special memories together ❤️ First thing she does when she comes over is to run to the top floor, throw something down the laundry chute, run down to the basement and exclaim “laundry chute still works” 😂

What a gorgeous family room❗️ Reminds me of our living room but ours was on much smaller scale and cheaper when I was growing up in the 60’s, I graduated in ‘68. Our beautiful mom was a single mom raising six children all on her own. The globe wall hanging I would do side by side and yes on the faux sofa table for holding drinks.
I'm sure I've already commented in here somewhere, but I'm gonna have to say that my favorite thrifted find is the macrame wall hanging this time. I don't know! I love it all so much. You hit it out of the ballpark with this room! It's absolutely gorgeous! I'm rewatching all of the past year. It's all so much fun! It's my passion too!

I love your basement! It is decorated beautifully. I would not paint the beams black. I think they would darken the room and be " heavy" in look. It looks just right as is, cozy and warm.

When you showed the globe, before you even said it was two pieces, I immediately thought the other piece of it was in the next room exactly where that one was - like it was going through the wall! 😂 You should be an interior decorator! ♥️ (I love the idea of the sofa table too!)

Many times I see a superficial, ( and dare I say) generic, repetitious, and RUclips allegorius fluff without the long term knowledge of a study. Our tastes are very similar, and I think this room has turned out beautifully. Love it all! The only thing I would add is a room divider next to the steps to the lower level bar. I get really nervous about people falling over the side.
Laura, I love ya. I’m 83 and love your picks. The globe wall hangings side by side. I like a shelf behind sofa. That’s a great idea. In all that I’ve seen the only change I would make, not a designer, is I think you need a larger table lamp next to sofa. That makes table obsolete. Maybe the tables in travel area would work. Just my thought. I love all that you put together. Oh, before I forget, the new hat is a killer and you make it work. I really enjoy you and Jesse and your Europe trip. Thanks for sharing.

I have some pieces that I have collected for many decades that will hopefully end up in some lovely young persons home one day too. I've seen people make those narrow ledges for the back of the couch and they are wonderful! This guy even put a charging area for the phones.

Definitely side by side. What a beautiful room. The cabinet covering the pipe just blends in. With the art held up there, the cabinet is not noticeable. And my vote is to not paint the ceiling beams black. So beautiful! Can’t wait to see your progress.

The couch was a great find! An excellent compromise between something sturdy and comfy, big enough for the whole gang, and not necessarily vintage, but still has style! I loved that I remembered seeing you find a lot of the pieces you shared, feels like we were there with you when you got them! It's looking great!

I have never seen anyone's face glow as much as yours while watching this video. So happy for you. Great idea about the shelving behind the couch. You have done such a fabulous job decorating the room. Can hardly wait to see the rest of the house. Globe, side by side each other and please DON'T paint the beams black. I think it would over power the room and you would loose that comfy relaxing feeling I think you were going for.

Your space looks very homey, comfortable and cozy! ! What I like about second hand items is that there is a story that comes with finding exchange of them! Plus the hunt is fun and makes the find even better! I would hang the globes side by side and the a shelf behind the couch would give a great console "table" Look! A place to put your drinks etc without crowding your space with mini tables.❤❤❤
Your side table thrilled me because I have one like it with a story of it’s own (I swear, we think alike). I got a slab of myrtle wood years ago near the southern Oregon coast on a trip down highway 101. The story of finding it is very cool, but long. It’s a beautiful piece of wood and I carried it around with me for over 20 years. My daughter got some hairpin legs put on it, and now it’s my bedside table!

I vote no on painting the wood planks black. It looks so good the way it is. I think black might close it in a bit and divert attention away from your treasures. I vote side by side for the half globes!☺
Also, my Aunt had a narrow sofa table custom made and it is such a great addition because her sofa is really deep, too. She has small lamps and a great clock on books on it. Her two cats think it was made for them to sprawl out on.😻😻

I especially enjoy the lighting. The tension bar bookshelves are my favorite and the lights on them are definitely the cherry on top. Your lighting is a big part of what makes the room cozy. I know recessed lighting is all the rage and I am not hating on it but there is something to be said for traditional lighting for the coziness factor.
I think the cabinet that hides the pipe adds some texture. It goes with your blinds and I wouldn't change it out.
I like the idea of a shelf behind the sofa. Just be sure to keep it no higher than the sofa so you don't hit your head on it if you lean back.

All looks fabulous amazing all the things you have put together Re the shelf behind the sofa, no candles- fire hazard with fabric of sofa and hair when people are sitting down. Everything else sounds wonderful . So enjoying watching you put it all together x
We've had high slender tables behind the sofa, and you're right - it's convenient to keep your drink on the table behind the sofa. What you're describing sounds like a drink railing at a bar that has a big dance floor in the middle. You set your drink on the railing & you can keep your eye on it while you dance. Great idea!
Love the idea of the board behind the couch, it can be very subtle just about 6 inches in depth and you could even instal charging points at various intervals having those hidden away as well 😀
The bomb shelter needs an arrow pointing down the stairs that says " this way". Love the room and like the ledge idea. Always need space for a beverage! Keep up the good work! Can't wait to see the kitchen and Little Italy.
Growing up midcentury this decor you have done shows how comforting the style still is. We had a custom built home (large) floor to ceiling windows and lots of space age lamps etc. You have soooooo much talent for putting items together----love your style & your staying true to used rather than new repro items. The warmth of the wood is so important to keep & the louvers over the vents are perfect & almost look like artwork. The dark brown beam should never get painted as it would look too modern in black.Your talent is so amazing you really do need your won tv show--you are so much better than any of those other designers on HGTV etc because you have "the eye" combined with your bubbly personality. My favorite find is the shelving units and the coffee table base. Sofa tables are always handy & your idea is perfect. The world plaques should be offset to create more interest & not look so matchy matchy. By the way, my parents owned a funeral home & cemetery so have that in common with you!!!

I know you have heard this already but.... the board shelf behind that fantastic couch is a genius idea! And can I give another round of applause for the couch! I was looking for the trunk or basket full of blankets for the (Paula named) "Cousins Couch". I can just see the kids all snuggled in, half sleeping, half giggling while the adults are in the kitchen doing their holiday cheers. What memories will be made in this room!
I have always loved globes and maps, so when I saw those exquisite metal pieces I must admit I squealed. Side by side is a must for these.
As for my favorite find in the room ... would have to be your cat. I still remember your reaction to finding him. I have felt that a few times in my life. So now every time I see him or see you pet him I feel the warmth and excitement of finding that unicorn, that something that has eluded me for decades and then one day is there, just silently saying my name. You know it will be with you forever. That the wait was truly worth the searching.

OMG...I feel like just went back to the late 60's...I was a small kid but I still remember the styles...which is what I'm into also.. for me it just brings back good old memories..and I don't know but I feel so at peace and happy when I'm a room that's mid century decors...YOU NAILED IT LAURA.... I'TS SOOOOO GORGEOUS... now just play some 60's cocktail Bossa Nova music...lol
