The Hidden Meaning in the Princess Bride

    I've been a fan of The Princess Bride since I was a child. Something about the daring rescue, the high stakes, and the quasi-magical setting had me hook, line, and sinker.
    When I first read the book by William Goldman, I didn't understand why there were all the modern-day interludes in there. (I was young, give me a break). I thought S. Morgenstern was a real author. I believed all of that. Such is the beauty of fairy tales, though.
    Today, I want to break down the classic film to demonstrate how the contemporary cutaways are not only appropriate, they are vital to communicating the deeper meaning found in the story.
    We're talking symbolism, we're talking thematic elements, we're talking dramatic question. We're talking secret messages. We're talking hidden meanings. We're explaining why there's a prologue.
    Oh yeah, it's storytime.

    ..such a wonderful movie. A very rare instance where I liked the movie more than the book. The movie ending with 'as you wish' is so sad for some reason. It's like a nod to all the grandfathers we eventually lose, but we keep those everlasting memories when he read a very special book to us.

    That's very well reasoned and probably correct. The novel though is different. First of all the impetus for the book was Goldman asking his two daughters what kind of stories they would like him to tell them before they went to sleep. "A princess" and "a bride" were their answers. The book's theme is that "life isn't fair....it's just fairer than death". Whether the film was deliberately modified with Buttercup as the protagonist (she is more sympathetic in the film than in the book), because the book's theme couldn't be carried over into the film, or whether that is more or less just how the film turned out (even if subconsciously in Goldman's screenplay).....I don't know. In any case, thank you for this interesting assessment.

      A very thoughtful response! I've always been struck by how different the book and the film were and wondered why they changed it so much. As a side note, it's worth researching how Goldman managed the film adaptation. He's rumored to have ruined shots during filming because he got too into the scenes and would like jump or scream or something. This is hearsay, but it wouldn't surprise me. The guy clearly loved storytelling.

    Kenny, the movie is clearly about true love in whatever form it takes even when it may appear not to be true love because the only thing getting in the way of true love is the denial of it. It is the lesson given to the sick boy and for which on an unconscious level he comes to realize, embrace, and desire. The initial transmission of this truth is often learned from the grandparents as the parents are generally preoccupied with survival rather than the permanency of love.

    The main protagonist of the film is surely the grandson? Great video.

      Hot take! And a position you could argue very adeptly, given that he shows some dynamic growth between the beginning and end of the film.

      @@InsteadofWriting Very minor point regarding this lovely, wonderful take on this lovely, wonderful movie: true we don't know where dad is today (presumably working), but mom is there: we see her at the start; and we can assume she's been in and out - at one point we see grandpa and the boy eating lunch while going through the book, and it's safe to assume mom prepared the lunch, and made herself scarce so that grandpa could work his magic and create a bond with his grandson. I do agree that the actual protagonist of the story is the boy.

      @Baba Ganush Thanks so much!
      I'm going to say that the boy is the protagonist in the framing story, as he is the one who goes through the arc and has a different perspective by the time the movie is over. Grandpa is not an antagonist here, but he might be classified as a catalyst.
