I was in my 30's back then. This is how it was. A nightmare. A useless Government and a panicked public. Several of my friends died when they were in their 30's. I was lucky . Maybe because I was in a monogamous relationship. I'm now 75 and see this film again and it all comes back. Thank God for these people. Thank God for people like Elizabeth Taylor , Elton John and others that took their star power and fought for those affected. They shamed a President into doing something even though it was never enough. I miss all those that led the way. I miss all my friends that couldn't get to my age. I'm so sorry I couldn't do more. A part of me will always feel guilty for outliving them.
I will always love Elizabeth Taylor for the work she did during this. She is a true ally and should be hailed forever by the LGBTQ community. Im only in my 30s now but I know enough about her and so many other people that helped bring awareness. Rest in eternal power queen! ❤❤ Will always love her for what she did even knowing the hatred it would bring her.
Huh? On the one hand you say his ability to convincingly portray a role which in reality he is not-which is his skill-doesn’t automatically make the movie better, but on the other hand you say his skill and portrayal allows the movie to be better. It’s baffling. It seems as though you are saying the movie’s ‘goodness’ doesn’t depend on his acting ability alone, which would be a valid point if someone DID make such an absurd claim. But no one did-they WERE talking about the actor, not the movie. Or, maybe you believe there is a different skill (other than portraying a role that in reality he is not) or his portrayal of something other than a gay man that allows the movie to be better. If so, please enlighten me as to what that skill/portrayal might be.
As a straight man, this isn't about gay sex or marriage, it's about equality. If everyone doesn't have it, none of us have it. That's just how it works. You can either support the concepts of love and equality, or support hate and bigotry. It's that simple. For those who believe in Jesus, which side do you think he would be on?

God, what a beautiful movie. Fantastic cast. Mark Ruffalo was brilliant as always. Jim Parsons was fabulous too of course. Also, to all the haters in the comments... Sweeties... You're literally crusading against love. You know you can't win, right?
This movie ripped my heart right out of my chest, crushed it to a million tiny pieces and gave the useless confetti back to me. Seriously, Larry Kramers work is more important than many people understand and maybe making into a film with high profile actors will make some of those people see it and get what it's all about
When the trailer starts and the screen flashes 1981, it gives me chills. I remember where I was the summer of 81. A carefree pre-teen playing Pac Man at arcades. Getting ready to start Jr High school and we had no idea of the epidemic which was happening. Watching these movies and documentaries, I can only say thank goodness for medical advancement. Those guys once they were infected, could only wait to die. I have seen The Band Plays On, We Were Here, A Normal Heart, An Early Frost and other documentaries.
Soberbia.
This movie illustrated a time in humanity that freedom and fear collided in an an epic way. It painted the time beautifully and brought tears to my eyes more times than any other piece of art as it was so relatable.
Those performances where Oscar worthy! A lot of the actors are nominated for an Emmy - with good reason. And Matt Bomer better win. His performances was so strong and heartbreaking. Of course Mark Ruffalo was also mindblowing.
Fuck this movie... I don't think I have cried this hard in my life. I can barely see because I'm still crying. The movie was great but I don't know if I can make myself watch it again. My heart hurts. (T^T)
Really really shocked at the amount of homophobic/ignorant/cruel comments on this trailer. I mean, you could all be trolls fishing for hate, but if not, then WOW SO MANY STUPID PEOPLE. Ignorance and closed-mindedness is the most frustrating thing in the world because no matter how much you argue your point, people, whether their opinions are based on religion or their own skewed thoughts, just can't find it within themselves to look at it from a different point of view. I mean, come on! We're in the 21st Century... we're all equal - black/white, gay/straight, male/female - so who gives us the right to belittle somebody for something they can't help? Something that is perfectly human and natural. Open your fucking eyes.
The only reason why people say so many hateful things about this movie is because it's something they don't understand or even see. The only thing that they see is that two men and two women kissing, is disgusting and mostly pay attention to what the bible says. It makes me realize how pathetic those people can be and who are they to say that gay people don't deserve any rights that other people deserves. We're all the same. you cut me and i cut you, we both bleed red, we're not different, we just don't like the same gender as you want us to.
I wish I could also have seen the Broadway version of this Larry Kramer masterpiece. It is all about us humans and about our social stigmas and dreadful phobias, which we are hopefully overcoming together, across genders, sexual orientation and races. While I am not gay, not even to the slightest degree, I adore and have been touched deep in my human soul by this drama. Jim Parsons is such a wonderful actor. Very impressive.
Hugely powerful and heart wrenching film. Very difficult to watch in parts but brilliantly portrayed. Superb soundtrack also ( Roxy Music ) Expect tears..
Feeling fucken sick reading some of these comments! FFS! If you don't agree with same sex you keep your horrible opinion to your self. No one is making you watch this movie , my thought on this movie is that it is very heart breaking but very beautiful amazing actors /actress amazing charters and amazing plot over all this movie is incredible
I watched it once and I cannot watch it again. It broke my heart. Seeing Matt Bomer, go from this young, healthy, full of life human being to a whisper of his former self. And knowing that this happened to so many people, a stupid amount of people is just soul-crushing. It is a wonderful movie, but I cannot go through it again.
Very moving, very horrifying. Definitely worth a watch though. You never know when the next epidemic is round the corner. For example, there have recently been some cases of gonorrhoea becoming resistant to antibiotics. We always need to be safe whether gay or straight.
For all the people in this movie and in real life who fought against extreme prejudice, ignorance, and a mysterious disease(AIDS) that took the lives of millions too soon...... today is for you. June 26th, 2015. Gay marriage is legalized across the entire United States proving that love is love. It is for all the activists then and now who have made a dream a reality for millions of people. LOVE IS LOVE!!!!👬👭👫💖💛💚💙💜
***** Did i say anything about being homophobic? No i did not. I love sheldon and yes i have the fucking right to say my opinion so get over it. If you keep arguing about stupid matters like this one, while people over the world are fighting Poverty and hunger , let me tell you that u need to get a life and as soon as possible. Peace !
Yasmean Ben oh that's good because luckily Sheldon is only a fictional character portrayed by the openly gay Jim Parson who's also portraying an openly gay character in a great movie.
Nobody should die of AIDS! It's the best movie i have ever seen...Yet it's so emotional that it broke me apart... I could feel the suffering and pain of the Aids patients.. Matt bomer you are awesome..
I wished I could have helped them! This was an awsome movie about what was going on back in 1981 when AIDS came about! I don't hate this movie at all! Its real, raw emotional and speaks from the heart of what these people had go through! Julia Roberts was amazing in this Matt Boomer, Mark Ruffalo, and the rest of the cast!
I was watching the trailer and thinking how far we had come since the 1980s. Then I scrolled down to the comments and realized how far we have yet to go until we become a society where people are allowed to be themselves and not persecuted because of who they love.
Omggggg this movie looks owesomeee i love movies that tell the beggining of medical struggles., the fights That were fought by brave people. Like decoding annie, dallas byers club. ThereS not really heroic people fighting like this anymore for any kind of injusties. Medical comunity just wanna make good profits this. Days. sad
I'm tough cookie speaking of tears but I have cried like a child watching it. Course, actors are sent from heaven, not from silly mainstream E!Online kitchen. Music is also great, esp. last song. Mark Ruffalo is probably one of very few truly great actors in Hollywoodshit land. Ofc, Matt...wow...
This does not only affects the gay community... so I guess the point here is not whether or not you're gay.. is, do you even take the time to understand how big and real the subject is.
this is a great movie.. i had so much tears watching this movie especially in the last part .. im not a gay, im not a lesbian, i am a straight woman. but i really love watching movie like this. i am not against homosexual, bisexual. in fact i salute them for being strong in facing this kind of thing. really great movie. best actor for Mark. :) by the way, i came from the Philippines. ;)
My main concern about this movie is how white all the actors are. If you know anything about New York gay culture in the 1980s, you know that many/most of them were not white. And yet if you treated this movie as a documentary, whiteness is almost all you see. The black/latino/etc gay men of 1980s New York have been erased.
The movie is based on a play. In the play, all the characters are white, they're just staying true to the play. However I see your point, there are so many more opportunities for white actors then there are for black actors. That needs to change!
Someone once said, never expect other people to tell your stories. Unless people of color start telling their own stories, they will remain invisible to themselves. Do not expect white people to tell POC's stories. They will never do it right anyway. I just watched this movie as a white man telling his story.
+kay jay The story of HIV in NYC is not just a white man's story, and that's a terrible excuse for pretending there were no black people involved in these events. The LGBT communities at that time and place were not racially segregated; they experienced these things together. Why you would want segregated movies depicting inaccurate events is beyond me.
Rhuddlan Sweety, my point is that to expect white people to tell people of color's stories is unrealistic and pathetic. Just to be blunt...they do not give a shit. This is the cold, hard truth. Blacks and Latinos must tell our own stories. The people displayed in this story/play are white, upperclass men. And as a New Yorker, let me just say that YES, there is a whole segment of whites in this city who NEVER have to interact with blacks/latinos except as their subordinates/employees. The author of this story doesn't strike me as someone who did lots of interaction with non-whites in the friends/equals department.
+kay jay Honey dearest, if you are trying to silence criticism of movies like this for writing black people out of history, then you are part of the problem. These white men do not need you labouring to protect their bubble for them, thanks. If you want to make a better movie: that's great, go for it. But don't ask the rest of us not to criticize bad movies when they are made.
I love this idea for a movie and how controversial it gets. I just cannot fuking get why people see something that is so natural that can even be seen other species as about somethng that is purely sexual. Being gay means that you are able to love someone which is of the same genre, not only having the hots for them. I'm straight and I don't give a f**** about who people loves.
I hope you do not watch the new movie. It looks awesome, Bruce Banner is an amazing actor and you know what; just because someone defends something, doesn't mean they are what they are defending. Ignorance, not wanting to watch a movie because he plays a gay man in another. I bet you hate obama because he is coloured too hmm? F. King Garret you need to not be so closed minded. Don't have to be gay, to be accepting of people.
you're vile, this movie is amazing and needs to be out there showing what happened and who people should thank for their rights. without people like these my cousin would not be allowed to be who he is
TheLondonCyclist Your ability to express your pathetic, dying opinion should be banned. Go back to the medieval times where you belong, you narcissistic piece of trash.
My high school did a production of the play when I was a senior & I sobbed so hard. I wanna watch the film but I can only imagine how much harder I will cry while watching
The kind of movie that silently gouges into your chest, and as it begins to tear apart your heart, you realize you're not watching a drama - you're watching a horror movie. And it's a true story.

My favorite movie of all times. I love all the actors in this movie.
'Men do not naturally not love, they learn not to' All the feels. All of them.
Same here. This movie was too heartbreaking and emotional for me to watch a second time.
They should close the comment section.
SUCH A WONDERFUL MOVIE!!! OMG SO POWERFUL!!!
" Az emberek sosem tudnak nem szeretni,
csak megtanulnak máshogy érezni..."
Idézet a filmből...és mennyire igaz! Hatással volt rám a film...8/10
Amazing film. Ruffalo and Parsons do not disappoint. Parsons long monologue about death in the middle of the film is beyond powerful.
This movie was fantastic. It held such a strong meaning and truth.
Jim Parsons in a serious role? Sheldon Cooper, you finally figured out time travel!!! ;D
I could not stop crying after watching this movie. One of THE best movies I have ever seen in my life.
We're all the same. you cut me and i cut you, we both bleed red, we're not different, we just don't like the same gender as you want us to.
emmet what they won't get laid in life
0:31 ...HULK!
you deserve more likes! i thought no-one else would notice it lol
ikr,Thanks fo tht... :P i thought i was da only one..
saashmax The more you stare the more it looks like Hulk. Thx for pointing it out, lol.

I kept going back to look lol
This movie is hauntingly beautiful but very sad. Perfect cast. Uhhmazzing movie.

This movie had me in a puddle of tears. If you're thinking about watching it and not sure, DO IT. It's amazing.
What an amazing movie. One the best I have seen in a long time. This touched my heart.
Oh God, I want to watch this but I'm afraid of all the sadness that'll come after.
Sad but excellent film, Matt Bomer and Mark Ruffalo were amazing in it. Jim Parson was awesome too.
Excellent movie
i agree
Brilliant movie..!!! Haters can hate all they want. But it is what it is... which is.. *BRILLIANT*
Hugely powerful and heart wrenching film.
Very difficult to watch in parts but brilliantly portrayed.
Superb soundtrack also ( Roxy Music )
Expect tears..
Sheldon is in it! Have to watch it now
Sheldon who?
Wakka Seta I think he means Sheldon Harnick, he is one of the beach buffs
Wakka Seta i think he means Jim Parsons, who plays Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory...
Ding ding
Don't watch this because of him. This is a very very serious movie and will not be liked by comedy fans.
"You can't stop fighting for the ones you love" what a beautiful movie. This actors made an amazing work. Just wow 👏👏👏🙌🙌
I really like that this actually has a lot of gay actors playing gay men
i loved this movie so much
Two best actors - Matt Bomer and Jim Parsons together on one movie. Perfect.
Can't wait to see this! The trailer made me tear up. And I love Mark Ruffalo and Julia Roberts, what a great cast.
hulk?? sheldon???? wtf mind blown!!!
SilentReverie90 I know right?!
Just watched this.... transformative to say the least!... v touching and powerful...incredible performances... Matt Bomer blew me away!
I still cry.
One of the best movies I've ever seen. So powerful. I wish I could describe it to you, but I can't. See the movie and be touched and taught!!!!!

This broke my heart beyond words and it still does!
Not sheldon please i love him
***** Did i say anything about being homophobic? No i did not. I love sheldon and yes i have the fucking right to say my opinion so get over it. If you keep arguing about stupid matters like this one, while people over the world are fighting Poverty and hunger , let me tell you that u need to get a life and as soon as possible. Peace !
Jazmine Gautier He's gay honey. Gayer than Christmas in the Key West.
VictorianRabbit3456 maybe jim parson is gay but for me sheldon is not
Yasmean Ben oh that's good because luckily Sheldon is only a fictional character portrayed by the openly gay Jim Parson who's also portraying an openly gay character in a great movie.
That's all I can see now when I see Jim Parson, Sheldon is love, Sheldon is life.
Nobody should die of AIDS! It's the best movie i have ever seen...Yet it's so emotional that it broke me apart... I could feel the suffering and pain of the Aids patients.. Matt bomer you are awesome..
Ned be like "Im always angry"
Hulk vibes...
Jim Parsons❤😍
by the way, i came from the Philippines. ;)
I hate the word homophobia. You're not scared, you don't agree with that lifestyle. Period.
I've only just watched the trailer to this movie and it's one of the most beautiful movies ever.
Congrats to Matt Bomer on tonights award. :-)
This movie is just amazing. Had me in tears.
This all sounds too much like Twist and Shout (Destiel fanfic, on archiveofourown.com)
I CAAAAAAAAAN'T *sobs forever*
Why'd you have to bring it up man?
cecilia winchester IT'S ALMOST A YEAR SINCE I READ IT AND I STILL FEEL LIKE SOBBING WHEN SOMEONE BRINGS IT UP.
I was about to say this ;-;
Awww this looks like a sad but good movie ❤️ love Jim parsons
THIS MOVIE MADE ME CRY SO MANY TIMES.
Such an amazing movie. Something EVERYONE should take the time to watch... Gay, bi, straight, black, white, etc.
I don't know if I'm gonna watch the avengers 2 bcos of this
Why because your beloved Hulk kiss other men?
Grow up
F. King Garret Wow, that escalated quickly.
***** I'm sure you are Imbecile
PlagaXTifi You are imbecile
My favorite..Such a good movie!!
Disgusting movie. It should be banned worldwide!
And why is that?
u´re disgusting person! poor!
why's that, the AIDS epidemic was a huge part of history so i think this movie has every right to be shown
you're vile, this movie is amazing and needs to be out there showing what happened and who people should thank for their rights. without people like these my cousin would not be allowed to be who he is
TheLondonCyclist Your ability to express your pathetic, dying opinion should be banned. Go back to the medieval times where you belong, you narcissistic piece of trash.
My high school did a production of the play when I was a senior & I sobbed so hard. I wanna watch the film but I can only imagine how much harder I will cry while watching
Too much gay.
There's no such thing.
This is my first time ever. Im crying before even watching the movie !!!!!
Just loved this movie! Amazing cast and so important subject. Even all deaths are beautifully done.
Man, those were scary days.
Matt bomer... it was so hard to watch this with him looking so frail... UGGHH HE'S PERFECTION NO MATTER WHAT.
Seeing him like that just broke me.
I've never cried so much in a movie.
This movie was amazing, highly recommend
I hope Larry Kramer is *Finally* getting his due respect for being a stalwart voice of truth and assertiveness.
The kind of movie that silently gouges into your chest, and as it begins to tear apart your heart, you realize you're not watching a drama - you're watching a horror movie. And it's a true story.
This movie broke me as did the mini series When we rise
