  • Charismatic Gifts: With Dr. Wayne Grudem (2019)
In this Theology Podcast, The Remnant Radio crew interviews Dr. Wayne Grudem on the Charismatic Gifts of the Spirit.
Dr. Grudem has a rock solid outlook on the gifts of the Spirit due to his experiences in the academic branches of Christendom and experiences in the charismatic movement. We discuss tongues; are they to be practiced publicly or can they be practiced privately? Prophecy; is it binding on the conscious of a congregation? and Apostles; Do they exist or have they ceased with the death of the 12?

This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.

The Charismatic Movement is smoke and mirrors. Where are these "gifted folks" bring them out of the shadows and show the Glory of God to the world through these gifts . NO? I didn't think so. Do we believe the God performs miracles ? Absolutely Do people still have these gifts absolutely not or thry would be demonstrated for His Glory.

I love Dr Grudem's comment on the leading of the Holy Spirit not being additional to the Canon. I listen to a lot of reformed teaching, though I'm charismatic, and am frustrated when it's taken as axiomatic that God stopped speaking when the Canon was complete. So that when a person hears God speak to them in a private matter, they are blasphemously presuming to add to Scripture.

So, are you saying that you hear the audible voice of God all of the time? And if you do, what is wrong with the millions and millions of Christians out there that don’t? And if you do hear the audible voice of God you really should write it down and publish it. I’ll take that back, don’t publish it. It will not say anything different than Scripture therefore is completely unnecessary.

A biblical teacher named David Pawson has done a wonderful teaching series called charismatics and evangelicals and after you have listened you come to the conclusion that charismatics and evangelicals were never meant to be separate and sadly there has been a definite split
Charismatics the power and the gifts
    Evangelicals emphasis on the word
All because of man adding or taking away from the word
Charismatics miss the rich and deep teaching of the word and the evangelicals miss the power the dunamis of Holy Spirit gifts

As it pertains to the story of building a new facility, is it only possible for a prophecy to be true if it lines up with the desires and plans of church leadership? It really seems to ring true that only positive prophecy is embraced by those in the charismatic movement. Have you experienced negative prophecies such as the one Dr Grudem faced in that prayer meeting?

Wayne tells a story how John Whimber wrote them a note (via the word of knowledge, the Lord told him) that Wayne's wife had married the right person. Wayne concludes that how could such a thing threaten the authority of Scripture? I might tend to agree but would add; what that "word of knowledge"did was underscored the authority of John Whimber to Wayne Grudem and THAT undermines the authority of Scripture given the way Whimber views the Scripture.

The example of testing prophecy at the 17:00 minute mark, given by Dr. Grudem, is 100% what *_not_* to do. You don't just ask people if they think it was from the LORD, or ask yourself how you "feel" about it. That is not what we are commanded to do.
Rather, the Biblical way to test whether or not a message is from the LORD is to test the fruit of the one giving the message. If this man was a faithful Christian, who bore the fruit of the Spirit, who didn't deny that Christ had come in the flesh, or teach people to worship other gods, or eat things sacrificed to idols, or commit fornication, etc. and he had shown that he was a prophet by declaring things that would come to pass (and they did), then there would be *zero* grounds to reject that word. Whether it "seemed" wrong, or mean spirited, or judgemental, etc. Have you *read* some of the words that the prophets of old would give God's people?!
However, if this man had demonstrated through his life that he was not walking orderly with the Lord and bearing good fruit, and he had taught errors in the past, or given prophesies that did not come to pass, then there would be *zero* grounds to accept his message as a word from the LORD. No matter how sweet sounding and positive the words might seem, or how likeable the man giving them.
This whole idea of subjectively accepting or rejecting words from the LORD based on how you feel about it, is not at all how we are told to test such things.
“Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.” ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:20-22
“Then He said, ‘Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, make Myself known to him in a vision; I speak to him in a dream. Not so with My servant Moses; He is faithful in all My house. I speak with him face to face, even plainly, and not in dark sayings; and he sees the form of the LORD. Why then were you not afraid to speak against My servant Moses?’” ~ Numbers 12:6-8
“‘But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.’ And if you say in your heart, ‘How shall we know the word which the LORD has not spoken?’-when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.” ~ Deuteronomy 18:20-22
“Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying: ‘O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter?’ says the LORD. ‘Look, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel! The instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, to pull down, and to destroy it, if that nation against whom I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I thought to bring upon it. And the instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it, if it does evil in My sight so that it does not obey My voice, then I will relent concerning the good with which I said I would benefit it.’” ~ Jeremiah 18:5-10
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them.” ~ Matthew 7:15-20
“Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it. For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you beforehand. Therefore if they say to you, ‘Look, He is in the desert!’ do not go out; or ‘Look, He is in the inner rooms!’ do not believe it. For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.” ~ Matthew 24:23-27
“But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head. But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved.” ~ 1 Corinthians 11:3-5
“Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, 'Jesus be cursed,' and no one can say, 'Jesus is Lord,' except by the Holy Spirit.” ~ 1 Corinthians 12:3
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.” ~ 1 John 4:1-3
“But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.” ~ Revelation 2:14
“Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.” ~ Revelation 2:20

At around 4.00, Dr Grudem states that he has seen countless miracles performed in the charismatic church, but goes on to say that his leader John Wilber died an early death. This lends to the cessationist view, that miracles can only happen if God will it. John would have undoubtably have been prayed heavily upon, but yet wasn't healed. This is something I struggle with and am just looking for answers.

Hi. This is a nice video on the topic, but, there's little biblical work to provide support for the positions. I am struggling with the Charismatic church... "God told me", "God says", or 'secret message from God for one to tell another', pictures, speaking in an 'unknown tongue'... even 'if' all the gifts continue there appears to be a lot of 'falsehood' generated by atmosphere and culture.
One more issue... the idea of all the gifts ceasing or continuing is a real problem... throughout the history of the church the gifts in dispute really haven't been happening. The Pentecostal movement and Charismatic Movement started pout by saying they are starting this all, that the use of all the gifts is something new... they themselves we clear that the gifts had stopped for nearly 2000 years... WImber and Co. make this abundantly clear. So the argument is almost null and void.
Again, this video is fine (and thank you for it) but its missing scriptural content and explanation. For example... the arguments which challenge the position of the charismatics are clearly defined.
It's a shame someone like Mr Grudem was on but without actual biblical teaching... he may of course be basing his comments on scripture but we are not to know?

@@rayfiedler9482 Hi. Not sure what you're getting at, here? Unknown tongues - that phrase in the Bible isn't actually referring to 'unknown tongues', it's a grammatical play on words to emphasise "if I were". As for speaking to one another in tongues, then two things... these were as signs to the Jews (as in Acts), secondly, they were always interpreted. Again, I struggle to find anything in the Bible which equates to the jabbering in the church.

Hey I have an idea---let just get a few of these guys who have these gifts to come on your show and demonstrate the God given gift of healing and miracles etc. The would pit this debate to rest . It has never been done . Lets let God be glorified which was the original intent of these gifts. Come on now what in the world could be stopping you. Heal a few blind folks , folks crippled from birth etc. you know like Christ and Paul and Peter did ---right out in the open so us doubting Thomas's would be forever silenced. I certainly would repent of my ignorance and unbelief and I think everyone would. Stop[p claiming something that is absolutely provable and prove it. If some one has these gifts step up---the Christian world is waiting for God to be glorified and He certainly would be.
